Final-year engineering apprentice, specializing in Industrialisation and Methods for Aeronautics and Space, Alexandre Bouraoui was recently honored at the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2025) in Sydney, where he won the prestigious Hermann Oberth Gold Medal in the Graduate category.
We spoke with him about his award and his studies at ISAE-SUPAERO.
Can you present yourself and speak about your acadmic path?
I was born in France and grown in Tunisia.
Before joining ISAE-SUPAERO, I graduated from a BUT in Physical Measurements (Mesures Physiques) at the University of Toulouse.
I am currently a final-year student of the “Diplôme d’ingénieur” by Apprenticeship (‘Industrialisation and Methods for Aeronautics and Space’) at ISAE-SUPAERO. I am also doing an apprenticeship at Thales Alenia Space as a payload architect apprentice for communication satellites, where I develop simulation and analysis tools for other architects.
You were awarded the Hermann Oberth Gold Medal at IAC 2025 in Sydney. Why did you receive this prize?
I received this award after being selected by the Aeronautics and Astronautics Association of France (3AF) to represent France in the student competition at the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2025) in Sydney.
There, I presented a paper entitled “Characterization of the Stationarity of an ICP Plasma”. This work focuses on studying plasma stability and was carried out within the PAMPA team of the Electronics, Optronics, and Signal Department (DEOS) at ISAE-SUPAERO, under the supervision of Romain Pascaud and Valentin Mazières. The project began during my second year as part of an introductory research module: I had personally contacted Dr. Pascaud to work on this topic, driven by my strong interest in plasma physics and electric propulsion—two of my passions.
I had the tremendous honor of winning the Hermann Oberth Gold Medal for the best student paper in the main category (“Graduate”) during the closing ceremony, in front of more than a thousand people.
The IAC was an exceptional opportunity for networking, learning about the space sector, and experiencing such a magnificent environment as Sydney.
Can you tell us about your current studies at ISAE-SUPAERO? Why did you choose this programme?
I chose the “Diplôme d’ingénieur” by Apprenticeship (‘Industrialisation and Methods for Aeronautics and Space’) programme because it provides a better understanding of the professional world through hands-on experience.
I particularly appreciate the alternating schedule (two months at school, two months in the company), which I find very suitable: it allows us to fully focus either on the academic side or on our professional assignments. Moreover, this format has helped ease the financial burden on my parents. They supported me a lot during my undergraduate studies, but it would have been difficult for them to continue assisting me throughout the additional three years of the engineering programme.
What are your career plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to focus on research in satellite electric propulsion, either as an engineer or by starting a PhD, as this is what I am most passionate about. However, I am not closing the door to aerospace engineering in all its aspects, a field I greatly enjoy through my current experience at Thales Alenia Space.

Discover... the ISAE-SUPAERO plasma benchISAE-SUPAERO – as a centre for training through research, research training and innovation – has a wide range of research equipment used within its six research departments. Today, we present white plasma! With the emergence of #NewSpace, more and more CubeSats are being launched. On these small platforms (CubeSats consist of one or more standard 10 cm cubes), several subsystems must coexist. While electric propulsion solutions save space and weight on board, their electromagnetic compatibility with on-board communication systems is still being questioned today. ISAE-SUPAERO, in collaboration with CNES and LAPLACE, is currently developing simulation tools and characterisation methods to provide engineers with tools for designing CubeSats and effective testing methods to address this issue. This experimental bench developed at ISAE-SUPAERO allows the characterisation of a plasma discharge representative of an electric thruster, as well as the measurement of its interactions with microwave signals generated by nearby communication antennas. Finally, the experimental data obtained will be used to calibrate the numerical analysis tools currently being developed by our teams.

Discover... the ISAE-SUPAERO radio anechoic chamberISAE-SUPAERO – as a centre for training through research, research training and innovation – has a wide range of research equipment used within its six research departments. Today, we present the radio anechoic chamber! Drones and nanosatellites have many applications in the media, industry, agriculture and telecommunications sectors. These two types of platforms share the common constraint of having to carry complex systems in a small space. One of the key elements of on-board communication systems is the antenna, which must also be compact and lightweight. ISAE-SUPAERO, in collaboration with ENAC and ANYWAVES, is currently developing dielectric antennas made by 3D printing ceramics that meet the demanding criteria for integration on drones and nanosatellites. Thanks to the anechoic chamber available at ISAE-SUPAERO, researchers involved in the development of these original antennas can accurately characterise their radiation properties and thus validate the new technological solutions proposed.

The sound of a Martian dust devil captured by the SuperCam microphone on PerseveranceThis video and audio show the results obtained by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover and its SuperCam microphone when recording the sounds of a Martian dust devil passing overhead on 27 September 2021, the 215th Martian day or sol of the mission. The dust devil was 25 metres wide and at least 118 metres high, moving at a speed of approximately 19 km/h. This is the first time such a recording has been made, as capturing a dust devil requires a bit of luck. Indeed, it flew over the rover at a time when all of Perseverance's sensors measuring wind, pressure, temperature and dust, plus the NavigationXXX (Navcam) camera, were running. This allowed scientists to combine sounds, images and atmospheric data. The unique combination of this data, along with atmospheric modelling, enabled researchers to estimate the dimensions of the dust devil. Scientists cannot accurately predict when these vortices will occur. Rovers such as Perseverance and Curiosity monitor them regularly. FRENCH SUPERCAM INSTRUMENT RECORDING THE SOUND OF INGENUITY'S 4th FLIGHTLocated 80 meters from the rover at the moment of take-off, the small helicopter rose to 5 meters above the ground before covering a distance of 133 meters before returning to land where it had taken off from. SuperCam's scientific microphone, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO, recorded the sound emitted by the rotation of the Martian drone's blades during its flight. This sound has a characteristic frequency of 84 Hz, equivalent to the low “E” of a piano or the bass voice of a human being. “This is a big surprise for the whole scientific team,” says Naomi Murdoch, a researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO who is studying the data from the microphone. "Tests carried out in a Martian atmosphere simulator to design this instrument, and our theories of sound propagation, indicated that the microphone would have great difficulty picking up the sounds of the helicopter. Indeed, Mars' thin atmosphere strongly attenuates sound transmission. We needed a bit of luck to record the helicopter from such a distance. We're very pleased to have succeeded in obtaining this recording, which is proving to be a goldmine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere". Developed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and a consortium of CNRS laboratories and its partners, coordinated by CNES, SuperCam's microphone is derived from a consumer model adapted to withstand the Martian environment. It pursues 3 substantial scientific and technical objectives of the Mars 2020 mission: Study the sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks, to gain a better understanding of their mechanical properties. Improving our understanding of atmospheric phenomena (wind turbulence, dust eddies, wind interactions with the rover, and now with the helicopter). Understanding the sound signature of the rover's various movements (robotic arm and mast operations, driving on normal or uneven ground, pump monitoring, etc.). The microphone was first switched on a few hours after Perseverance landed. It recorded the first Martian sounds generated by turbulence in the atmosphere. It is used daily in conjunction with laser rock ablation for chemical analysis of Mars. ABOUT THE MARS 2020 MISSION: NASA is relying on Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the development of the Mars 2020 mission. SuperCam was developed jointly by LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA) and a consortium of laboratories attached to the CNRS, French universities and research establishments. Several Spanish universities, led by the University of Valladolid, are also contributing to the instrument. CNES is responsible to NASA for the French contribution to SuperCam. The instrument is operated alternately from LANL and the French Operations Center for Science and Exploration (FOCSE) at CNES in Toulouse.

Today, we present CMOS image sensors! CMOS image sensors are playing an increasingly important role in our everyday lives. For several years now, our team at ISAE-SUPAERO has been developing CMOS image sensors with a number of players in the field, and innovating by proposing new architectures and conditions of use requiring studies of both elementary components and more complex structures. Measurements are carried out on transistors and diodes with the help of an under-tip tester and a parametric analyzer enabling very low current measurements (10 aA). Similarly, simple structures containing innovative pixels can be operated with the tester using spike cards coupled to a word generator specially designed for image sensors. All these studies not only contribute to our understanding of the physics of photodetection, but also provide models for our simulators. They are also used to monitor manufacturing processes during the various production phases.

Today, we'd like to introduce you to mobile ground robots! Whether robots, airplanes, cars or even telephones, all these technologies are equipped with perception systems. Depending on the application, these sources of information make it possible to perceive the environment in which a system is evolving, and also to measure its own characteristics, such as speed or acceleration. This multitude of data must then be used, cross-referenced and interpreted within the navigation system to obtain the vehicle's position, but also, in the case of mapping applications, that of surrounding objects. Within the DEOS NAVIRRES team, researchers are interested in navigation systems and their application in complex environments where sensor information may be degraded, erroneous or unavailable. Mobile acquisition platforms are being developed. These are equipped with cameras, lidars, GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receivers, radars and inertial units, with the aim of obtaining the most efficient navigation system for the application in question. One of the team's research themes is the analysis of the degradation of sensor information, enabling the development of new robust and adaptive algorithms to compensate for environmental constraints. The aim is to make navigation systems more accurate and safer, for critical applications requiring strong reliability constraints, such as autonomous cars or exploration robotics.

Today, we present our cryogenic equipment for electrical testing! ISAE-SUPAERO's image sensor research group (CIMI) studies sensors in the visible wavelength range, but also sensors in different spectral ranges such as infrared. Detection of these longer wavelengths requires materials other than silicon for detection, combined with a silicon readout circuit for information processing, all operating at cryogenic temperature. In this context, ISAE-SUPAERO has developed electrical and electro-optical characterization benches for low-temperature microelectronic circuits, in order to extract and model their behavior and performance. These characterization benches can address both very simple circuits, such as transistors, and complex components (complete sensors) with up to 120 inputs/outputs.

L'astéroïde 8887 a été baptisé « Scheeres » en reconnaissance de ses contributions à la compréhension scientifique de l'environnement dynamique des astéroïdes. Pendant son séjour à l'ISAE-SUPAERO, le professeur Scheeres et l'équipe des systèmes spatiaux pour les applications planétaires ont collaboré à l'analyse des données DART et au développement de concepts visant à étudier la structure interne des astéroïdes lors de futures missions spatiales. Discover... the ISAE-SUPAERO irradiatorISAE-SUPAERO – as a centre for training through research, research training and innovation – has a wide range of research equipment used within its six research departments. Today, we present the irradiator! As part of its research activities, ISAE-SUPAERO develops electronic components and systems for scientific and space applications. Space is a very aggressive environment, particularly because high-energy particles emitted by the sun or trapped in radiation belts threaten the health of astronauts, the properties of materials and the proper functioning of electronic chips. In order to reproduce the effects of this ionising radiation on electronic technologies in the laboratory, ISAE-SUPAERO has acquired an X-ray irradiation chamber with an energy of up to 320 keV. As every year, the large ISAE-SUPAERO community will gather for one of the highlights of the Institute's calendar: the graduation ceremonies, which will be held on Saturday, 6 December 2025 at the CREPS gymnasium, a loyal partner of the event.
Nearly 1,000 people are expected to attend each ceremony to celebrate our graduates and share in the pride of being part of the ISAE-SUPAERO network.

Alexandre LeRoch receives the Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO thesis prize for his work at ISAE-SUPAEROAlexandre Le Roch, PhD student in the Electronics, Optronics and Signal Department (DEOS) receives the Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO thesis prize for his work on the Analysis of the increase and discrete fluctuation of the dark current of CMOS imagers in space and nuclear radiative environments. Alexandre graduated from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Rennes (INSA Rennes) in 2015, and began his thesis at ISAE-SUPAERO in 2017 after a period spent at STMicroelectronics in Singapore. Vincent Goiffon, professor at ISAE-SUPAERO and Cédric Virmontois from the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) supervised this thesis, which was carried out with the support of CNES and the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives (CEA). Her thesis studies the effects of space and nuclear radiation on CMOS image sensors, with the aim of improving space instruments and plasma diagnostics for nuclear fusion. More specifically, the study focuses on radiation-induced crystalline defects responsible for increased dark current. This work is helping to improve our understanding of the physical principles at work in silicon when exposed to radiation. Alexandre is author or co-author of 11 publications. He has presented his work at the RADECS 2017, NSREC 2018, IISW 2019 and NSREC 2019 international conferences. During his thesis, he was the recipient of various awards. These include the Paul Phelps Award from the NPSS chapter of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), as well as the Best Student Paper and Best Paper awards at the RADECS 2019 conference. Alexandre also helped open the IEEE student branch at ISAE-SUPAERO in 2017 and chaired it until 2020. Alexandre Le Roch defended his thesis in July 2020, and currently works as a research engineer at ISAE-SUPAERO in collaboration with CNES. His research activities focus on the radiation resistance of CMOS image sensors for future missions exploring the Jovian system (Jupiter), a very severe radiative environment. He will soon be joining NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to continue this work on the radiation resistance of imaging systems. A thesis prize awarded by the ISAE-SUPAERO Foundation for the excellence of the research carried out and the prospects for application of the thesis.

Eloa Guillotin and Hugo Tarlé receive the Mayoux Dauriac 2020 prize from ISAE-SUPAERO ENSICA ALUMNIEloa Guillotin and Hugo Tarlé (S2020) have been awarded the Mayoux-Dauriac prize by the ISAE-SUPAERO ENSICA Alumni Association. The prize is awarded to an engineering student in the final year of the ISAE-SUPAERO engineering curriculum for practical achievements during schooling and various internships, in accordance with the wishes of Maurice MAYOUX (S 1924). Eloa and Hugo form a true binomial. They are both engineers from ISAE-SUPAERO (S2020), and have followed the same training path, at the École Polytechnique, HEC Paris and the University of California at Berkeley (USA). They are passionate about space, and launchers in particular. Since they met in their first year, they have also been involved in entrepreneurship, heading up the school's entrepreneurship association and organizing Europe's first space startup weekend in partnership with Airbus Defence and Space, CNES and ESA. During their engineering studies, they set up Attom, a company developing instant recharging products for smartphones. Their project received two notable entrepreneurial awards in Toulouse. Their subsequent career path also taught them the basics of setting up a technology company. Following their Master's degree in X-HEC Entrepreneurship at HEC Paris, and a semester at the University of California at Berkeley, they set up Beyond Aerospace. Eloa takes a long-term view of the goals to be achieved, and her natural organization enables her to set precise, realistic milestones. Her ambition and managerial good humor make her the CEO of Beyond Aerospace. Hugo has strong technical skills, particularly in fluid mechanics and data science. A true do-it-yourselfer, he has built a bi-liquid H2O2/ethanol engine, solid propulsion boosters and experimental rockets in his garden. His rigor and exacting standards make him the CTO of Beyond Aerospace. Their company is part of an economic system they learned about through their Master's thesis supervised by Sandy Tirtey, Launch Director of Rocket Lab - the world's first and only operational commercial micro-launch vehicle to date. Their curiosity and passion for space and technological entrepreneurship, through their technical experiments now applied with Beyond Aerospace and their overall achievements, demonstrate a real industrial and economic interest in the micro-launch vehicle market, which has enabled them to win this prize, the result of their excellence.

EXOTRAIL wins the Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO entrepreneurship prizeThe Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO entrepreneurship prize has been awarded to Paul Lascombes, a graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO (S2017) and Ecole Polytechnique (X2013), co-founder and Scientific Director of EXOTRAIL created in 2017. Exotrail is a start-up that designs and supplies transportation solutions for the space industry. It markets electric propulsion systems to small satellite manufacturers. It all began for Paul during his studies at the École Polytechnique (X2013), where he carried out a scientific project to develop an instrument for measuring the thrust of an electric microthruster. Thanks to this project, carried out in 2014/2015, he became interested in the space field and the commercialization opportunities for this new type of thruster adapted to nanosatellites. This project will be the seed of the Exotrail adventure launched in 2015. During his studies, first at École polytechnique, then at ISAE-SUPAERO (S2017), Paul Lascombes developed both his scientific and entrepreneurial culture, while starting to work more and more intensively for Exotrail. In 2017, following his end-of-study internship at Airbus Defence and Space, he joined Exotrail full-time to prepare two projects: building the company, from a strategic and technical point of view, to carry out an initial fundraising, but also the technical animation that enables them to capitalize on the knowledge acquired during development with SATT Paris-Saclay, (Société d'Accélération du Transfert de Technologies (SATT) facilitates and develops the transfer of innovations from public academic research) ... This was to lay the foundations for the technologies needed for our demonstration mission, all with a small team of 6 people. After this first round of funding and the consequent growth of the team, Paul's work focused on three main areas in line with his role as Scientific Director: - Operational management of the Toulouse-based software development team. - Technical leadership of the whole team and coordination of R&D. His role is to constructively challenge the technical choices made by the development teams. He/she is responsible for ensuring the overall coherence of activities and the technical interactions of the various developments, and for coordinating R&D actions. - The definition of Exotrail's long-term strategy. He leads thinking on the SpaceVan (orbital transport vehicle housing nanosatellites to transport them to their final operational orbit from launch orbit.) and stays connected on launch and in-orbit service issues. The entrepreneurship prize launched by the ISAE-SUPAERO Foundation in 2019 aims to encourage entrepreneurship, and is a way of supporting start-ups in their innovative and promising projects, particularly in the field of aeronautics, space and defense.

Paul Planeix receives the Mayoux-Dauriac prize from ISAE-SUPAER ENSICA ALUMNIPaul Planeix (S2020) has been awarded the Mayoux-Dauriac prize by the ISAE-SUPAERO ENSICA Alumni Association. The prize is awarded to an engineering student in the final year of the ISAE-SUPAERO engineering curriculum for practical achievements during schooling and various internships, in accordance with the wishes of Maurice MAYOUX (S 1924). Maurice MAYOUX - SUPAERO 1924 (ARTS & MÉTIERS Cluny 1920), who died on September 4, 1997, expressed in his will his wish that, with the proceeds of his estate bequeathed to the Société des Ingénieurs Arts et Métiers, French language prizes for Arts et Métiers students and mechanical engineering prizes for SUPAERO students be created, in association with the name of his wife Jeanne Dauriac. “Annual award of a Prize reserved for the student in the last year of study, whatever his or her speciality, but chosen for his or her knowledge of the whole of General Mathematics and its application in ‘practical’ constructions, constructions to be considered on the whole of their qualities: principle, simplicity, efficiency, probable feasibility, cost price as restricted as possible.” L’Association SUPAERO, désormais ISAE SUPAERO ENSICA Alumni, a donc décidé la création du prix Mayoux-Dauriac Aéronautique destiné à récompenser l’utilisation des connaissances acquises à l’Ecole dans l’exercice d’une des différentes facettes du métier d’ingénieur, les réalisations (projets) étant jugées sur leur utilité pour l’industrie (ou les services) et devant présenter un bilan économique positif. Deux prix ont été attribués en 2020 ! Deuxième Prix 2020 pour un montant de 3000 € remis à Paul Planeix pour le projet de drone « Recherche & Sauvetage » Développement d’un environnement de simulation de vol / contributions aux systèmes de Guidage, Navigation et Contrôle chez Zipline International Paul a réalisé de nombreux projets scientifiques et ceci dans de nombreux domaines au cours de son cursus ingénieur. En effet, membre de l’association CubeSat, il a contribué à la construction d’une maquette à échelle 1 :1 du nanosatellite MONA. Sa scolarité au sein de l’ISAE-SUPAERO lui a aussi permis de qualifier un système de navigation de drone et de s’initier à la recherche via un projet de contrôle d’exosquelette. Ce projet de recherche, basé sur des méthodes de Machine Learning, a été effectué dans le cadre de l’association Enorev’ visant à aider les enfants atteints de paralysie cérébrale. Au cours de son double-diplôme au sein de l’université de Stanford, Paul construit un aéronef réalisant un scénario de recherche et sauvetage totalement autonome du décollage à l’atterrissage. Paul then managed to join Zipline, still a young robotics start-up in Silicon Valley. There, he interned with the two-person Guidance, Navigation and Control (GN&C) team. He contributed to the development of a drone simulation environment and GN&C systems. Today, Zipline operates the world's largest and first drone delivery system in Rwanda, Ghana and the USA, providing a solution to the last-mile problem in healthcare. This solution saves lives by maximizing the availability of essential medical products while minimizing waste and guaranteeing the cold chain. Paul continues to contribute to Zipline's mission since 2020 via the skills he acquired as an engineer at ISAE-SUPAERO and Stanford. He received this award for the variety and excellence of his career path and the practical achievements that have led him to evolve in the startup ecosystem. The Mayoux-Dauriac prize is awarded for the use of knowledge acquired at the School in the exercise of one of the various facets of the engineering profession, and for the usefulness of the projects carried out for industry and services with a positive economic balance sheet.

Pablo Caron receives the Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO thesis prize for his thesis at ISAE-SUPAEROPablo Caron receives the Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO thesis prize for his work on the study of electron-induced singular events in integrated technologies. A graduate of the Technique Spatial et Instrumentation master's program at Université III Paul Sabatier (Toulouse), Pablo Caron prepared his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Christophe Inguimbert (ONERA), Laurent Artola (ONERA) and Robert Ecoffet (CNES) in ONERA's DPHY (Physics Instrumentation Environment Space Department) in Toulouse. His work, funded by ONERA and CNES, focused on the study of electron-induced singular events in embedded technologies. On-board electronics and, in particular, on-board memories, are sensitive to the radiative environments in which they operate. These sensitivities can take many forms, from the loss of data to the destruction of a component. In 2014, the first measurements of errors (SEU) in an SRAM memory were carried out. Pablo Caron's work is part of this effort to understand the physical mechanisms responsible for the errors observed. Pablo Caron is an engineer- Researcher at ONERA Toulouse in the DPHY/ERS unit (Spatial Radiative Environment) whose main missions are the measurement of particles inhabiting radiation belts and the development of models dedicated to the specifying environments associated with future space missions. A thesis prize awarded by the Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO for the excellence of the research carried out and the prospects for application of the thesis.

Testimony of Joseph Risson, ingénieur 2024 alumni & co-founder of Viraj H2 From student to entrepreneur: that's the path Joseph Risson, a 2024 graduate, has taken at ISAE-SUPAERO!Co-founder of the startup Viraj H2, created during his 3ᵉ year of engineering studies, Joseph Risson wants to contribute his expertise to the decarbonization of air travel by exploring a new hydrogen propulsion architecture! Joseph and his partner, Paul de Goÿs, were awarded the €1 million Lopez-Loreta Foundation prize in 2023 to continue their research into this innovative propulsion method, and now benefit from the support and expertise of InnovSpace, the school's official incubator, where the startup is currently housed. AeroMAPS: an ISAE-SUPAERO reference tool for exploring the possible futures of aviationThe AeroMAPS tool, developed by two ISAE-SUPAERO researchers, Scott Delbecq and Thomas Planès, can be used to assess the environmental impacts of air transport and the effectiveness or limitations of levers to decarbonize the sector! Initially designed for research and training purposes, the tool is now a multidisciplinary, open-source platform, accessible to experts as well as institutional, industrial and associative decision-makers. Its development has been integrated into the work of the Institute for Sustainable Aviation (ISA), an interdisciplinary research institute headed by Laurent Joly, whose aim is to address the issue of #aviation's ecological transition in all its complexity. By playing on the sector's transition levers, AeroMAPS users can define the scenarios whose impacts they wish to analyze. For example, the introduction of new aircraft types, the use of new fuels or the rate of growth in air traffic. AeroMAPS is the first air transport scenario exploration platform built on an open-source scientific methodology. It was initially designed and developed to enable researchers to explore air transport transition scenarios in detail. It was then rapidly integrated into training programs: first in the ISAE-SUPAERO engineering curriculum, then in continuing education programs. To facilitate use of the tool, a partnership was formed with Sopra Steria. This major tech player built the platform's new web interface to enhance the user experience and make it accessible to decision-makers. Research work recently took on a socio-economic dimension with a PhD prepared by Antoine Salgas, in partnership with TBS Education. Antoine Salgas has also created a traffic and emissions inventory in collaboration with the Dutch Delft University of Technology. These two aspects of his thesis gave rise to an AeroMAPS “satellite” tool, called AeroSCOPE, which enables analyses to be partitioned and regionalized. Today, the comprehensive, multi-disciplinary aspect of AeroMAPS is a decision-making aid for the entire #aeronautics ecosystem. Through its scientific expertise, ISAE-SUPAERO contributes to the debate and to the future of aviation.

AeroMAPS: an ISAE-SUPAERO reference tool for exploring the possible futures of aviationThe AeroMAPS tool, developed by two ISAE-SUPAERO researchers, Scott Delbecq and Thomas Planès, can be used to assess the environmental impacts of air transport and the effectiveness or limitations of levers to decarbonize the sector! Initially designed for research and training purposes, the tool is now a multidisciplinary, open-source platform, accessible to experts as well as institutional, industrial and associative decision-makers. Its development has been integrated into the work of the Institute for Sustainable Aviation (ISA), an interdisciplinary research institute headed by Laurent Joly, whose aim is to address the issue of #aviation's ecological transition in all its complexity. By playing on the sector's transition levers, AeroMAPS users can define the scenarios whose impacts they wish to analyze. For example, the introduction of new aircraft types, the use of new fuels or the rate of growth in air traffic. AeroMAPS is the first air transport scenario exploration platform built on an open-source scientific methodology. It was initially designed and developed to enable researchers to explore air transport transition scenarios in detail. It was then rapidly integrated into training programs: first in the ISAE-SUPAERO engineering curriculum, then in continuing education programs. To facilitate use of the tool, a partnership was formed with Sopra Steria. This major tech player built the platform's new web interface to enhance the user experience and make it accessible to decision-makers. Research work recently took on a socio-economic dimension with a PhD prepared by Antoine Salgas, in partnership with TBS Education. Antoine Salgas has also created a traffic and emissions inventory in collaboration with the Dutch Delft University of Technology. These two aspects of his thesis gave rise to an AeroMAPS “satellite” tool, called AeroSCOPE, which enables analyses to be partitioned and regionalized. Today, the comprehensive, multi-disciplinary aspect of AeroMAPS is a decision-making aid for the entire #aeronautics ecosystem. Through its scientific expertise, ISAE-SUPAERO contributes to the debate and to the future of aviation.

French-Korean workshop: “Cryogenic hydrogen for aviation”.

“Hydrogen is a breakthrough technology for decarbonizing aviation. Given its high energy content and its ability to propel aircraft without emitting carbon, it represents a key avenue that ISAE-SUPAERO has been exploring for several years.
Given South Korea’s technological lead in this field, the organization of a Franco-Korean workshop on hydrogen for aeronautics represents an opportunity to share best practice and the latest research into the use of hydrogen on board, particularly cryogenic hydrogen”.
Rather than being a forum for discussing the future of air transport, this scientific workshop aims to tackle the technological challenges associated with hydrogen propulsion, by giving the floor to those who are actually doing it, rather than those who are putting forward hypotheses or definitive opinions without any experimental proof.
This is why Korean speakers from the best industrial and research centres, as well as French speakers from the academic and industrial worlds, will come together to share their discoveries.
For ISAE-SUPAERO, committed to training our future engineers in environmentally-friendly techniques, this workshop is a springboard for strengthening our scientific exchanges with Korea and federating the French ecosystem committed to the decarbonization of aviation.

On July 9–10, 2025, ISAE-SUPAERO had the honor of hosting the very first in-person edition of the Inter-Agency GNC V&V Workshop, bringing together more than 150 participants from academia, industry, and major international space agencies.
Organized under the guidance of ESA, CNES, NASA, DLR, ASI, ISAE-SUPAERO, and ONERA, the event marked a significant step forward in fostering dialogue and collaboration across the global space ecosystem. It aimed to address a core challenge of today’s missions: the Validation & Verification (V&V) of Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) systems — a field critical to the precision, reliability, and safety of space operations.
GNC : a cornerstone of spaceflight systems
GNC systems are essential to every stage of a mission. They enable a spacecraft to plan and follow its trajectory (Guidance), determine its position and velocity in space (Navigation) and stabilize and correct its motion as needed (Control).
Mastering GNC is fundamental to the design and execution of both crewed and autonomous missions, from orbital rendezvous to deep-space exploration.
From keynotes to collaboratio
The workshop featured two standout keynote presentations. Jean-François Goester (CNES), who shared insights on orbital rendezvous strategies and Stefan Winkler (Airbus Defence & Space), who highlighted the engineering mindset required to address real-world challenges in spaceflight.
In addition to technical discussions, the event showcased an educational highlight: Francesco Sanfedino, faculty member at ISAE-SUPAERO, presented the European Satellite Benchmark for Control Education & Industrial Training — a tool co-developed with ESA to support hands-on learning in satellite control systems

FRENCH SUPERCAM INSTRUMENT RECORDING THE SOUND OF INGENUITY'S 4th FLIGHTLocated 80 meters from the rover at the moment of take-off, the small helicopter rose to 5 meters above the ground before covering a distance of 133 meters before returning to land where it had taken off from. SuperCam's scientific microphone, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO, recorded the sound emitted by the rotation of the Martian drone's blades during its flight. This sound has a characteristic frequency of 84 Hz, equivalent to the low “E” of a piano or the bass voice of a human being. “This is a big surprise for the whole scientific team,” says Naomi Murdoch, a researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO who is studying the data from the microphone. "Tests carried out in a Martian atmosphere simulator to design this instrument, and our theories of sound propagation, indicated that the microphone would have great difficulty picking up the sounds of the helicopter. Indeed, Mars' thin atmosphere strongly attenuates sound transmission. We needed a bit of luck to record the helicopter from such a distance. We're very pleased to have succeeded in obtaining this recording, which is proving to be a goldmine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere". Developed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and a consortium of CNRS laboratories and its partners, coordinated by CNES, SuperCam's microphone is derived from a consumer model adapted to withstand the Martian environment. It pursues 3 substantial scientific and technical objectives of the Mars 2020 mission: Study the sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks, to gain a better understanding of their mechanical properties. Improving our understanding of atmospheric phenomena (wind turbulence, dust eddies, wind interactions with the rover, and now with the helicopter). Understanding the sound signature of the rover's various movements (robotic arm and mast operations, driving on normal or uneven ground, pump monitoring, etc.). The microphone was first switched on a few hours after Perseverance landed. It recorded the first Martian sounds generated by turbulence in the atmosphere. It is used daily in conjunction with laser rock ablation for chemical analysis of Mars. ABOUT THE MARS 2020 MISSION: NASA is relying on Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the development of the Mars 2020 mission. SuperCam was developed jointly by LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA) and a consortium of laboratories attached to the CNRS, French universities and research establishments. Several Spanish universities, led by the University of Valladolid, are also contributing to the instrument. CNES is responsible to NASA for the French contribution to SuperCam. The instrument is operated alternately from LANL and the French Operations Center for Science and Exploration (FOCSE) at CNES in Toulouse.

ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space organize an international training course on space systemsTwenty engineers from the Peruvian space agency CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) attended a training course in Toulouse designed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space! The aim? To develop their skills in space systems and space missions. The entire program was placed under the academic responsibility of AnnaFederica Urbano, a lecturer and researcher in space systems and launchers at ISAE-SUPAERO. The engineers took part in a preliminary satellite design project. At the end of the five-week course, they all obtained the Certificate of Advanced Studies awarded by ISAE-SUPAERO. And in passing, he offers a few words of advice to young people who might dream of following in his footsteps: “Don't let yourself be convinced that one of these paths isn't for you!” A 2017 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Arnaud Prost is among those selected for the ESA Astronaut Class of 2022, alongside Sophie Adenot and Anthea Comellini, both also alumni of the school. They join other illustrious ESA astronauts who have already studied at the school: Thomas Pesquet, Luca Parmitano and Samantha Cristoforetti. Since 1970, ISAE-SUPAERO has contributed to the progress of the space age through its training, research and innovation activities. From classroom to cockpit: flying activities at ISAE-SUPAEROTake a video tour of the school's Lasbordes Air Operations Center (COAL). With a fleet of 9 light aircraft, the COAL offers 3 types of activities: - Pilot training to obtain the Private Pilot's License (PPL), which enables students to fly single-engine aircraft. - Practical work directly linked to the school's teaching programs, from flight mechanics to an introduction to flight test techniques for continuing education. - Research into human factors and pilot cognitive mechanisms in real time during flight. At ISAE-SUPAERO, engineering and Master's students are lucky enough to be able to take their pilot's license just a few kilometers from the campus. Several instructors accompany them and train them to fly. All are members of the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Operation Research Department, headed by Valérie Budinger.

Researchers from ISAE-SUPAERO contributed to the success of the first images from ESA's Sentinel 2c observation satellite.The Sentinel 2c Earth observation satellite, launched on 5 September as part of ESA's Copernicus mission, has delivered its first images. This success is partly due to the image sensor research team (CIMI) at ISAE-SUPAERO, which designed and oversaw the manufacture of the visible image sensors.

Ses activités de recherche ont contribué à faire de l'école un leader international non seulement en termes de programme d'ingénierie aérospatiale, mais aussi de programmes de troisième cycle, notamment ses masters (MSc) et ses programmes de doctorat en sciences de l'ingénierie. C'est pourquoi de nombreux acteurs internationaux clés de la recherche rendent visite à leurs homologues de l'ISAE-SUPAERO. Nous avons rencontré Dan Sheeres, professeur émérite de l'université du Colorado et titulaire de la chaire A. Richard Seebass au département des sciences de l'ingénierie aérospatiale Ann et H.J. Smead de l'université du Colorado à Boulder. Les recherches de Dan Scheeres couvrent des sujets allant de l'astrodynamique et de la navigation spatiale à la science planétaire et à la mécanique céleste, et il a publié de nombreux articles dans ces domaines. L'astéroïde 8887 a été baptisé « Scheeres » en reconnaissance de ses contributions à la compréhension scientifique de l'environnement dynamique des astéroïdes. Pendant son séjour à l'ISAE-SUPAERO, le professeur Scheeres et l'équipe des systèmes spatiaux pour les applications planétaires ont collaboré à l'analyse des données DART et au développement de concepts visant à étudier la structure interne des astéroïdes lors de futures missions spatiales. Feedback: a Latecoere engineer in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratoriesTo strengthen the links between industry and research, more than 10 industrial R&D engineers have been made available to ISAE-SUPAERO as part of the France Relance plan! Cyril Geneste, research engineer at Latecoere, is one of them. Together with Miguel Charlotte, Associate Professor at the Institute, he looks back on this fruitful two-year collaboration. Their work, carried out in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories, focused on the behavior of aircraft door seals, which ensure cabin airtightness. Thanks to the Institute's cutting-edge equipment and academic expertise, Cyril Geneste was able in particular to carry out numerical modeling of seals in order to test their behavior. Students in their 3rdᵉ year of engineering studies were also involved in this work.

The sound of a Martian dust devil captured by the SuperCam microphone on PerseveranceThis video and audio show the results obtained by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover and its SuperCam microphone when recording the sounds of a Martian dust devil passing overhead on 27 September 2021, the 215th Martian day or sol of the mission. The dust devil was 25 metres wide and at least 118 metres high, moving at a speed of approximately 19 km/h. This is the first time such a recording has been made, as capturing a dust devil requires a bit of luck. Indeed, it flew over the rover at a time when all of Perseverance's sensors measuring wind, pressure, temperature and dust, plus the NavigationXXX (Navcam) camera, were running. This allowed scientists to combine sounds, images and atmospheric data. The unique combination of this data, along with atmospheric modelling, enabled researchers to estimate the dimensions of the dust devil. Scientists cannot accurately predict when these vortices will occur. Rovers such as Perseverance and Curiosity monitor them regularly. When scientists notice that they are more frequent at a certain time of day or approaching from a certain direction, they focus their monitoring to try to capture a dust devil with all the sensors at their disposal. > To better understand the video, it shows three rows of images: - the row

3 questions to Marie Delaroche, 3ᵉ year student and MDRS 293 crew commanderSince February 18, seven ISAE-SUPAERO engineering students have been living a simulated Martian life and carrying out experiments in collaboration with CNES and several research laboratories at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in UTAH (USA)! For the second time, the mission is led by a woman: Marie Delaroche, a passionate #spaceexplorer, who was already part of crew 275 departing in 2023. We asked her 3 questions to find out more about the challenges of this mission and her feelings as #flightcommander! Alongside her, three young women and three young men in their 2ᵉ year of #engineering studies have taken on the roles of astronomer, scientist, botanist, journalist, health worker and onboard engineer. They are all members of the Mars Club ISAE-SUPAERO, a student association for the popularization of science focused on the Red Planet and the missions dedicated to its exploration and study. They are currently experimenting with AI4U, the artificial intelligence that assists astronauts in their daily tasks (environmental measurements, voice recognition, emergency exercises). They are also conducting a science popularization experiment in collaboration with secondary school pupils. Inspired by the film The Martian, in which an astronaut grows potatoes on the Red Planet, the aim of this experiment is to compare plant growth in Martian soil with growth in terrestrial soil!
