At ISAE SUPAERO, the Department of Electronics, Optronics and Signal Processing (DEOS) studies, designs and produces scientific instruments for aeronautics, space and defense applications, with a strong focus on advanced systems and planetary exploration missions.

Our Research Department

ISAE-SUPAERO’s Department of Electronics, Optronics, and Signal Processing (DEOS) is a key player in innovation in the aeronautics and space sectors.

It conducts cutting-edge research and develops advanced technologies, from the design of sensors and communication systems to interplanetary scientific payloads.

From physics to signal processing and DEOS, we research and develop advanced signal processing methods as well as state-of-the-art sensors and instruments. Our high-level experimental platforms support both research and the training of future engineers and researchers.

Research Activities at DEOS

DEOS is structured into five scientific groups:

The CIMI group, which specialises in silicon-based image sensors for the visible and infrared wavelengths
The PAMPA group, which explores the interactions of electromagnetic waves with matter in order to innovate with microwaves and photonics
The NAVIR²eS group, which focuses on signal and image processing applied to navigation, radar and remote sensing
The ComIT group, which studies digital communications and channel access techniques for applications ranging from space to the Internet of Things
The SSPA group, which develops missions and technologies for the geophysical exploration of the solar system

Our Lessons

Our team in the Electronics, Optronics, and Signal Department is heavily involved in ISAE-SUPAERO‘s top-quality programmes, both in the engineering cycle curriculum and in the Masters programmes.

We are fully committed to teaching, offering courses that combine theory and application, to ensure that students receive an education based on the latest scientific and technological advances.

We encourage and promote participation in research projects to enable our students to develop essential practical and methodological skills in areas such as Earth observation, communication systems, satellite navigation, and the exploitation of space data.

Our commitment is also reflected in the supervision of internships, final year projects, and collaborations with institutions and companies in the sector. This hands-on immersion in today’s scientific and technological challenges prepares our students to become major players in the space industry.

Earth Observation and Universe Sciences Programme

The aim of the programme is to provide high-level training to familiarise ISAE-SUPAERO engineers with the technologies and themes used in Earth observation and scientific space missions.

It also enables students who wish to continue their training in research to combine their engineering training with a scientific education that will enable them to pursue a thesis.

The programme has a wide range of outlets, including major space manufacturers (Airbus-DS, Thales Alenia Space, etc.), space agencies (ESA, CNES, NASA), research institutes (CNRS, etc.), and SMEs specialising in space data processing and applications.

The programme is built around a core curriculum, with two additional pathways: The Universe Sciences pathway and the Earth Science and Environment pathway.

Advanced Master® Space Applications & Services

The aim of this AM is to give students a better understanding of space systems and their use in Earth observation, communications, and navigation.

Students will design space applications and services using examples and experimental work. They will propose and design tools and solutions in areas such as the environment, agriculture, transportation, and urban planning.

They will also be able to create a complete telecommunications system according to the user’s needs: Internet access, Internet of Things, fixed or mobile terminals.

M2R Advanced Communication Systems (ACS)

The Advanced Communication Systems (ACS) Master’s degree is a joint teaching programme run by 4 engineering schools in the Toulouse region (France): ENAC, INPT/ENSEEIHT, INSA, and ISAE-SUPAERO (under the patronage of Paul Sabatier University).

The aim is to broaden the training of our students so that they can meet future challenges in the field of communication systems (for example, preparing for R&D in industry or continuing as doctoral students).

Design and Architecture of Cognitive Air Systems Research Chair – Dassault Aviation

The CASAC Chair, supported by the Neuroergonomics Centre at ISAE-SUPAERO, is backed by Dassault Aviation, which is affirming its commitment to the mastery of complex systems.

Design and Architecture of Cognitive Air Systems (CASAC) - Phase 3

2025-2030

Launched in 2016 with the support of Dassault Aviation, the CASAC Chair has established itself as a global pioneer thanks to the major breakthroughs of its first two phases, combining neuro-ergonomics and AI and leading to widely recognized publications. Building on this success, Phase 3 (2025–2030) now focuses on human-centered design of collaborative aeronautical systems, both civil and military, to prepare the next generation of cognitive airborne systems integrating AI and decision-support methods.

4 lines of research:

Robust and reliable multimodal identification of operator mental states and action intentions, enhanced by brain-machine interface technologies;
Efficient, robust and reliable human-machine collaboration integrating the estimation of action intention and cognitive state of human operators, and the dynamic adaptation of artificial agent initiatives;
Decision support tools for the planning and distribution of tasks between manned and unmanned machines;
Assistance functions and adaptive human-machine interfaces for aircraft cockpits, integrating: (i) the estimation of pilots’ degraded cognitive states, and (ii) pilots’ preferences concerning the initiative-taking of artificial agents in specific operational contexts.

Impact on training:

The Chair’s work is used as a teaching aid in two areas of training: Autonomous Systems, and Neuroergonomics and Artificial Intelligence, both offered in the 3rd year of the engineering curriculum. The Chair’s work also supports the research projects offered to Master in Aerospace Engineering students each year.

Representing the Insitute: 4 Great Names

The ISAE-SUPAERO Foundation supported the initiative of three ambassadors who were keen to call on alumni, former directors, and executives of the Safran Group to make a collective donation to inscribe the names of four great engineers who have marked the history of the Group and of aeronautics in the Agora:

Integrated Air Transport System – Thalès

This research and teaching chair combines the expertise of ISAE-SUPAERO in aerospace systems engineering with that of the Thales Group in avionics, connectivity, and air traffic management.

It aims to strengthen both partners’ excellence in air transport systems modeling, artificial intelligence, and operations research, with the goal of optimizing air operations through a comprehensive approach and ultimately reducing CO₂ emissions.

Research activities:

How can we model an air transport system realistically, considering the viewpoints of the stakeholders, and to simulate this system qualitatively and quantitatively to draw conclusions.
How can we identify key points that deserve further study, enabling us to develop strategies for continuously optimizing traffic, considering the intentions of pilots, airlines, and air traffic controllers/ATC?

Advanced Space Concepts Laboratory

2022-2027

Supported by Airbus Defense & Space and ArianeGroup since 2017, the SaCLaB chair enables the development of the study of advanced space concepts through research and teaching projects. Phase 2 continues the cutting-edge work initiated in 2017, in a context where future international missions to explore the solar system constitute one of the major challenges in the space field.

4 lines of research:

Orbital systems: in-orbit servicing, active debris removal
Space exploration: space bases (orbital or surface), man-rover interactions
Access to space: space transportation systems, propulsion, cryogenic propellant management
Space surveillance: space traffic management, space surveillance and tracking

A team of professors, PhD students and postdoc work together on these areas of expertise. The Chair has enabled the development of projects with CNES and ESA, and forms the basis for numerous student projects and theses. Since its launch, several scientific articles have been published in A-rank journals, attesting the quality of the research results.

Campus au féminin: raising girls’ awareness of scientific careers

Female students and scientists involved in the day

Female engineers, researchers and students from ISAE-SUPAERO were on hand to inform young students about engineering careers, encourage them to pursue their dreams, and address some of the obstacles they may encounter when making their career choices.

Ines Belgacem, patron of OSE at ISAE-SUPAERO and a scientist at the European Space Agency, recalls the primary objective of this event: ” The idea is not to push young women into science, whether they like it or not, but to provide them with all the information they need. Because we know that young girls are not as keen on science as boys, and that they don’t necessarily have access to information in the same way. For me, information is the key to everything “. She encourages them: ” Get as much information as you can, take advantage of all the opportunities, like Campus au féminin, so that whatever decision you make, it’s one you want to make and not one you have to make.

Angélique, a 2019 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO and an engineer at Dassault Aviation, who also came along for the occasion, stresses the importance of raising awareness among young girls as early as possible: ” the fact that there aren’t many women in science courses starts very early, and it’s not so much at the recruitment stage that we can do something, or in higher education, but much earlier at secondary school when they choose science courses, where the gap is already widening at that point“.

Students at the heart of the organisation

Campus au féminin is also, and above all, the remarkable involvement of the Institute’s students, coordinated by the OSE programme team, in particular through the ISAElles student association, which encourages young women to take up science and deconstructs gender stereotypes.

Sascha Eydieu, a student and member of the ISAElles board, tells us about her role in organising the day: “I’m in charge of communicating with students, organising the various events and recruiting volunteers. In practical terms, this involves managing the planning and preparation for the day and organising meetings with the volunteers. I also take part in meetings with the ISAE-SUPAERO OSE team, to ensure that the various stages of the project are properly monitored.

A flagship event in ISAE-SUPAERO and its Foundation's commitment to equal opportunities

Launched in 2016, these days are the result of a collaboration between OSE the ISAE-SUPAERO and the ISAelles club. They reflect the commitment of the Institute, its equal opportunities programme and the Foundation to stepping up initiatives to encourage young girls to go into higher education and science courses.

This event is also part of a wider initiative: the “Campus au féminin” (“Campus for Women”) project, which involves a pair of female engineers and an ISAE-SUPAERO student mentoring groups of 10 secondary school girls. The main objective is to create a special link between secondary school pupils, students and women engineers.

The Range of Programmes Offered by Engineering Schools

Under the Supervision of the Ministry of Armed Forces

As the Ministry's expert in this field, the ASD provides targeted high-level accredited programmes, ranging from short job adaptation courses to diploma or qualification courses at the leading engineering schools under the Ministry's supervision, thereby helping to generate expertise.

A Consortium of Three Entities

Created in 2023, the ASD is made up of three entities grouped together in a consortium, coordinated on a rotating basis by one of the members:

Institut Supérieur de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace (ISAE-SUPAERO),
the École de l’Air et de l’Espace (EAE),
the Centre de Formation aux Opérations Spatiales Militaires (CFOSM) of the Commandement de l’Espace (CDE).

A Clear, Shared Programme Portfolio

This merger will make it possible to offer a clear, common range of programmes covering both the academic and operational aspects of the space sector:

scientific and technological skills from ISAE-SUPAERO;
scientific and military skills from EAE; and
mastery of space operations from CFOSM.

Open to interministerial and foreign partners, as well as to other stakeholders in the field such as CNES, ONERA, and industrialists in the sector, the ASD represents one of the preferred vectors for learning in the field and also for exchanges and meetings with the academic and industrial world of the space ecosystem.

The space sector is undergoing rapid change, marked by technological breakthroughs and new use cases. ASD is responding to the new programme challenges facing players in the military space sector, and ISAE-SUPAERO is providing all its scientific expertise and experience in educating civil and military engineers.
