ISAE-SUPAERO OSE tutoring programme

Tristan, can you tell us about your tutoring?

T.D. I wanted to be tutored because I want to have every chance of succeeding in my studies thanks to the homework help offered by ISAE-SUPAERO students. I’m also really motivated by the team spirit generated by tutoring!

My plans are to work on my specialities (Science-Economics and Social Studies, but also History-Geography-Geopolitics and Science-Politics) with as many people as possible so that they can help me, support me and give me their knowledge of these subjects.

My tutoring was carried out with a great deal of understanding and professionalism on the part of the tutors, but also on the part of the teachers around us. The ease with which the tutors are able to put themselves at our level increases our self-confidence and our desire to persevere.

What did you learn from this experience?

T.D. I’ve learnt that there’s strength in numbers and that helping each other is a good way of achieving your goals. Knowing that most of the tutors are young people like us reassures us and encourages us to work and continue our studies.

What message would you like to give to young people like yourself who might be hesitant about taking the plunge?

T.D. I’d tell them not to hesitate and that it brings a lot more than it asks. Tutoring is a much less formal form of learning than classroom lessons, as the tutors and teachers are not there to assess us but to help us.

After 2 years of preparatory studies in Lyon, Samuel Falcou, now a 2nd year student, explains why he got involved in tutoring high school students.

Why did you decide to get involved in a project like this?

S.F. Tutoring is an extremely rewarding activity for us.

In engineering school, you get a lot, but sometimes it’s good to be able to give something back, and that’s extremely enriching for us. We learn a lot from interacting with high school students whose backgrounds are very different from those we’ve come into contact with in our lives.

Because of the group atmosphere that develops as the tutoring progresses, the sessions always become a good time, and at no time are they perceived as drudgery.

What projects did you work on with Tristan? How did the tutoring go?

S.F. Tristan is a high school student who is very clear about what interests him, particularly in terms of his career. So I’ve had the opportunity to talk to him at length about this.

Last year, for the French oral at the baccalauréat, we took the time to work on it, and I’m sure we’ll do the same this year for the big oral.

The tutoring has always gone very well because the students are willing and we don’t need to push them to make an effort.

What support did OSE provide in this area?

S.F. OSE is essential to this tutoring project. It is already OSE that brings the tutors together and frames the tutoring arrangements. For example, they provide the tutors with bus tickets so that they can travel to the high schools free of charge.

Numerous unifying activities are also organised throughout the year, at no cost to the tutors or the pupils: a weekend in the mountains for the first-years, dedicated to the French oral, a weekend at the seaside for the final-years’ oral, and so on.

OSE provides an extremely beneficial presence, and everything that’s needed to make tutoring a great time for both students and tutors.

What have you gained from this experience?

S.F. First of all, at first glance, it’s about teaching. In fact, that’s the core job of a tutor when you’re helping with homework. But beyond that, a bond is created, thanks to our similar ages. As a result, I got to know several high school students as friends and I was able to talk with them, which helped me to question many things about subjects such as the French school system, equal opportunities and the place of studies in our society.

Arnaud Prost, ESA reserve astronaut and ISAE-SUPAERO alumnus: “I was incredibly lucky to be here”

Fighter pilot and reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), Arnaud Prost returned to his former school on Thursday March 28 to meet 200 secondary school students as part of the ISAE SUPAERO OSE program. It was an opportunity for him to recall the “great memories” of his student experience at ISAE-SUPAERO, his long-standing commitment to the student social outreach program and the “Aquanauts” scheme he set up with OSE l'ISAE-SUPAERO. And in passing, he offers a few words of advice to young people who might dream of following in his footsteps: “Don't let yourself be convinced that one of these paths isn't for you!” A 2017 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Arnaud Prost is among those selected for the ESA Astronaut Class of 2022, alongside Sophie Adenot and Anthea Comellini, both also alumni of the school. They join other illustrious ESA astronauts who have already studied at the school: Thomas Pesquet, Luca Parmitano and Samantha Cristoforetti. Since 1970, ISAE-SUPAERO has contributed to the progress of the space age through its training, research and innovation activities. As the only organization in France to offer degree courses (engineering, master's, specialized master's, doctorate) covering all 22 space-related themes identified by CNES, the Institute offers a royal road to space careers. Co-founder of the startup Viraj H2, created during his 3ᵉ year of engineering studies, Joseph Risson wants to contribute his expertise to the decarbonization of air travel by exploring a new hydrogen propulsion architecture! Joseph and his partner, Paul de Goÿs, were awarded the €1 million Lopez-Loreta Foundation prize in 2023 to continue their research into this innovative propulsion method, and now benefit from the support and expertise of InnovSpace, the school's official incubator, where the startup is currently housed. Like all our alumni, he plays an essential role in creating lasting links between the institution and its former students. They encourage mutual support and the sharing of professional opportunities, help strengthen the community and support future generations with their experience and resources.

3 questions to Marie Delaroche, 3ᵉ year student and MDRS 293 crew commander

Since February 18, seven ISAE-SUPAERO engineering students have been living a simulated Martian life and carrying out experiments in collaboration with CNES and several research laboratories at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in UTAH (USA)! For the second time, the mission is led by a woman: Marie Delaroche, a passionate #spaceexplorer, who was already part of crew 275 departing in 2023. We asked her 3 questions to find out more about the challenges of this mission and her feelings as #flightcommander! Alongside her, three young women and three young men in their 2ᵉ year of #engineering studies have taken on the roles of astronomer, scientist, botanist, journalist, health worker and onboard engineer. They are all members of the Mars Club ISAE-SUPAERO, a student association for the popularization of science focused on the Red Planet and the missions dedicated to its exploration and study. They are currently experimenting with AI4U, the artificial intelligence that assists astronauts in their daily tasks (environmental measurements, voice recognition, emergency exercises). They are also conducting a science popularization experiment in collaboration with secondary school pupils. Inspired by the film The Martian, in which an astronaut grows potatoes on the Red Planet, the aim of this experiment is to compare plant growth in Martian soil with growth in terrestrial soil! ISAE-SUPAERO's OSE 2024 restitution programme

Students supported by our OSE L'ISAE-SUPAERO program restituted their projects on May 30 at the Grand Marché MIN Toulouse Occitanie! 730 middle and high school students from 6ᵉ to terminale, supported under the social openness and cordée de la réussite program, closed a year of tutoring and projects with nearly 75 achievements presented. Every year, over 120 students from the Institute, the Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse III - UPSSITECH engineering school and the École nationale de la Météorologie volunteer to organize and take part in scientific and sports workshops, tutoring programs, visits and outings 🤸‍♀️ This year, a Commitment Award was symbolically presented at the Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO Scholarship Ceremony to all the students involved, via Jules Paindessous and Odile De La Rue, loyal volunteers who have been committed to the program since they joined the Institute. Bravo to them for their support!

Discover our OSE InGÉ program

“OSE Intégrer une Grande École” with the OSE InGÉ program, ISAE-SUPAERO's student social opening program for scientific CPGE students, in partnership with the ISAE-SUPAERO Foundation, ENAC - Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile and the ENAC Foundation. The OSE InGÉ program provides personalized support for young girls and scholarship-holders throughout their preparatory classes for the Grandes Ecoles (CPGE), helping them to build their future plans and develop their ambitions. The stakes are threefold: the democratization of education linked to profound rather than structural transformations, the strengthening of #social openness in the grandes écoles and the engineering field, and the creation of an innovative scheme on the scale of an Occitanie region. Begun in 2022, the program was brought to life thanks to the collaboration of the teaching teams at three Toulouse high schools: Lycée Bellevue, Lycée Déodat de Séverac and Lycée Pierre de Fermat, the mobilization of ISAE-SUPAERO alumni and the support of our partners: the Conseil Régional de La Région Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée, Airbus, Elior Group and CREPS de Toulouse. It consists of : - customized mentoring: personalized, one-to-one support from a mentor who is an alumnus of the school, depending on availability and needs. An ISAE-SUPAERO alumnus provides support right up to the competitive entrance exams, offering his or her experience, support and listening skills to help answer questions and reinforce choices; - immersion courses to discover the campus of a Grande École, talk to former CPGE students and professionals with inspiring backgrounds, meet your mentor, consolidate your knowledge and learn how to better manage your CPGE years; - one-off events at partner high schools: an #orientation evening, testimonials from professionals, conferences, dinner/debates, training for #CPGE teachers on how to support vulnerable students. Meeting with Joseph Risson, engineering student and winner of a scholarship for his Viraj H2 project

On Friday, 8 December, the Swiss Jean-Jacques and Felicia Lopez-Loreta Foundation for Academic Excellence awarded a prize to Viraj H2, a project developed at ISAE-SUPAERO. Joseph Risson, a third-year engineering student, is studying a hybridisation between a hydrogen turboprop engine and a fuel cell in order to accelerate the decarbonisation of air transport. The €1 million grant will enable Joseph and his partner Paul de Goÿs to validate the technology behind their innovation.
