Interview with Juan-Carlos DOLADO-PEREZ (M2008), Head of Space Surveillance at CNES

Can you tell us about your academic career?

I come from Alicante, a town in the south of Spain. Ever since I was a child, I’d dreamt of working in aeronautics and space, so I naturally turned to the Polytechnic University of Madrid, which at the time was the only Spanish university offering training in aeronautical engineering.

At the end of the course, I had two choices: To enter the world of work or to continue my studies. I chose to deepen my knowledge of aerospace … and enjoy my student life a little longer!

After discussions with colleagues who had done projects in Toulouse, I chose to come to France and Toulouse, the European capital of aeronautics and space. I had the opportunity to join the MAE at ISAE-SUPAERO. I spoke very little French at the time, but that didn’t stop me because the courses were taught in English.

At ISAE-SUPAERO I discovered a new way of teaching and learning these subjects.

I went from a very theoretical approach in Spain to a more practical approach in the Master’s programme, with more projects and applications.

We also benefited from courses given by professional lecturers from the aerospace industry (Airbus, Thalès, CNES, etc.), which gave us an initial insight into the expectations and realities of the world of work.

From a personal point of view, it was also a very valuable experience. The Master students come from all over the world, so you get to know many cultures and learn to adapt to multiculturalism.

I graduated top of my class, and it was a great source of pride for me to have the recognition of the teaching staff, so that I could go back to work full of motivation!

How do you build your career? What motivates you in your choices?

I started my professional life with no idea of a clear-cut career path.

When I discovered orbital mechanics during my studies, the subject fascinated me! I applied to CNES and was extremely lucky to be selected for an internship in the Orbital Manoeuvres department. CNES is an exceptional place to work in space, with fascinating subjects and surrounded by passionate people.

Following my placement, I took up an opportunity to become DATA SCIENTIST on the CoRoT mission to explore the universe and detect exoplanets. This mission opened up my horizons, as I discovered the world of scientific research, working with planetologists and astrophysicists, as well as with the operational teams, all working towards a common goal: To advance science! This reinforced my belief that ” together we are stronger “, and that has become my motto.

I was extremely lucky to work at CNES with teams that allowed me to develop my ideas, always in an extremely constructive spirit. I was able to develop operational tools for analysing the quality of scientific data that were used long after I left the job.

I then took up a new opportunity that brought me closer to my favourite field: orbital mechanics.

I joined the team working on space surveillance and space debris.
Space surveillance is one of CNES’s areas of defence activity. It involves knowing at all times what is over our heads and where these objects (debris, launcher bodies, active or inactive satellites) are going, and whether there is a risk of collision or re-entry into the atmosphere. With the ease of access to space and the proliferation of objects in orbit (new launches, explosions in orbit, anti-satellite tests, etc.), the risk of collision in orbit is only increasing.

For example, during the first decade of the 21st century, the number of satellites launched into orbit each year was around one hundred. By way of comparison, in 2021 alone, more than 1,500 satellites will have been launched into orbit!

Faced with this increase in the number of objects in orbit and the associated risk of collision, CNES monitors a fleet of around 300 satellites 24/7 to protect them from the risk of collision, for example by recommending anti-collision manoeuvres with a non-active object or coordinating space traffic whenever there is a risk of collision with another manoeuvring object.
This activity, which is part of a public service aimed at protecting European space platforms, is provided by CNES as part of the EU-SST European Space Surveillance programme.

It is important to note that CNES was one of the pioneers of space surveillance worldwide, being one of the first to suffer the consequences of space pollution. In 1996, the French military satellite Cerise was the first satellite to be lost due to impact with space debris. Today, CNES’s expertise in this field is known and recognized worldwide.

In this exciting and now indispensable field of space surveillance, I started out as a specialist, then an expert, and now I have the honour and privilege of working with an exceptional team as head of the space surveillance department at CNES.

Do you have a message for our students?

First of all, I’d like to tell them to be daring, to be curious and ambitious in what they do, and always seek to improve and add value. Be non-conformist, in the good sense of the word. Just because you’re used to doing something a certain way doesn’t mean it’s the right way to do it.

We’re stronger together! We need to stay open to new adventures and grow with others.

The sound of a Martian dust devil captured by the SuperCam microphone on Perseverance

This video and audio show the results obtained by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover and its SuperCam microphone when recording the sounds of a Martian dust devil passing overhead on 27 September 2021, the 215th Martian day or sol of the mission. The dust devil was 25 metres wide and at least 118 metres high, moving at a speed of approximately 19 km/h. This is the first time such a recording has been made, as capturing a dust devil requires a bit of luck. Indeed, it flew over the rover at a time when all of Perseverance's sensors measuring wind, pressure, temperature and dust, plus the NavigationXXX (Navcam) camera, were running. This allowed scientists to combine sounds, images and atmospheric data. The unique combination of this data, along with atmospheric modelling, enabled researchers to estimate the dimensions of the dust devil. Scientists cannot accurately predict when these vortices will occur. Rovers such as Perseverance and Curiosity monitor them regularly. When scientists notice that they are more frequent at a certain time of day or approaching from a certain direction, they focus their monitoring to try to capture a dust devil with all the sensors at their disposal. > To better understand the video, it shows three rows of images: - the row

Fighter pilot and reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), Arnaud Prost returned to his former school on Thursday March 28 to meet 200 secondary school students as part of the ISAE SUPAERO OSE program. It was an opportunity for him to recall the “great memories” of his student experience at ISAE-SUPAERO, his long-standing commitment to the student social outreach program and the “Aquanauts” scheme he set up with OSE l'ISAE-SUPAERO. And in passing, he offers a few words of advice to young people who might dream of following in his footsteps: “Don't let yourself be convinced that one of these paths isn't for you!” A 2017 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Arnaud Prost is among those selected for the ESA Astronaut Class of 2022, alongside Sophie Adenot and Anthea Comellini, both also alumni of the school. On Friday, 8 December, the Swiss Jean-Jacques and Felicia Lopez-Loreta Foundation for Academic Excellence awarded a prize to Viraj H2, a project developed at ISAE-SUPAERO. Joseph Risson, a third-year engineering student, is studying a hybridisation between a hydrogen turboprop engine and a fuel cell in order to accelerate the decarbonisation of air transport. The €1 million grant will enable Joseph and his partner Paul de Goÿs to validate the technology behind their innovation.

Artery In Microgravity (#AIM), the first student scientific experiment designed and developed in collaboration since 2018 by ISAE-SUPAERO and Polytechnique Turin, was launched on 23 November 2022 by Space X's Dragon cargo ship to the International Space Station (ISS)! FRENCH SUPERCAM INSTRUMENT RECORDING THE SOUND OF INGENUITY'S 4th FLIGHT

Located 80 meters from the rover at the moment of take-off, the small helicopter rose to 5 meters above the ground before covering a distance of 133 meters before returning to land where it had taken off from. SuperCam's scientific microphone, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO, recorded the sound emitted by the rotation of the Martian drone's blades during its flight. This sound has a characteristic frequency of 84 Hz, equivalent to the low “E” of a piano or the bass voice of a human being. “This is a big surprise for the whole scientific team,” says Naomi Murdoch, a researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO who is studying the data from the microphone. "Tests carried out in a Martian atmosphere simulator to design this instrument, and our theories of sound propagation, indicated that the microphone would have great difficulty picking up the sounds of the helicopter. Indeed, Mars' thin atmosphere strongly attenuates sound transmission. We needed a bit of luck to record the helicopter from such a distance. We're very pleased to have succeeded in obtaining this recording, which is proving to be a goldmine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere". Developed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and a consortium of CNRS laboratories and its partners, coordinated by CNES, SuperCam's microphone is derived from a consumer model adapted to withstand the Martian environment. It pursues 3 substantial scientific and technical objectives of the Mars 2020 mission: Study the sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks, to gain a better understanding of their mechanical properties. Improving our understanding of atmospheric phenomena (wind turbulence, dust eddies, wind interactions with the rover, and now with the helicopter). Understanding the sound signature of the rover's various movements (robotic arm and mast operations, driving on normal or uneven ground, pump monitoring, etc.). The microphone was first switched on a few hours after Perseverance landed. It recorded the first Martian sounds generated by turbulence in the atmosphere. It is used daily in conjunction with laser rock ablation for chemical analysis of Mars. ABOUT THE MARS 2020 MISSION: NASA is relying on Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the development of the Mars 2020 mission. SuperCam was developed jointly by LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA) and a consortium of laboratories attached to the CNRS, French universities and research establishments. Several Spanish universities, led by the University of Valladolid, are also contributing to the instrument. CNES is responsible to NASA for the French contribution to SuperCam. The instrument is operated alternately from LANL and the French Operations Center for Science and Exploration (FOCSE) at CNES in Toulouse.

ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space organize an international training course on space systems

Twenty engineers from the Peruvian space agency CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) attended a training course in Toulouse designed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space! The aim? To develop their skills in space systems and space missions. The entire program was placed under the academic responsibility of AnnaFederica Urbano, a lecturer and researcher in space systems and launchers at ISAE-SUPAERO. The engineers took part in a preliminary satellite design project. At the end of the five-week course, they all obtained the Certificate of Advanced Studies awarded by ISAE-SUPAERO. For ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space, this experience opens up prospects for future collaborations in training courses of this type for international customers and industrial and institutional partners. Landing on Mars: a unique experience for seven students

Since February 18, seven ISAE-SUPAERO engineering students have been living a simulated Martian life and carrying out experiments in collaboration with CNES and several research laboratories at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in UTAH (USA)! For the second time, the mission is led by a woman: Marie Delaroche, a passionate #spaceexplorer, who was already part of crew 275 departing in 2023. We asked her 3 questions to find out more about the challenges of this mission and her feelings as #flightcommander! Alongside her, three young women and three young men in their 2ᵉ year of #engineering studies have taken on the roles of astronomer, scientist, botanist, journalist, health worker and onboard engineer. They are all members of the Mars Club ISAE-SUPAERO, a student association for the popularization of science focused on the Red Planet and the missions dedicated to its exploration and study. They are currently experimenting with AI4U, the artificial intelligence that assists astronauts in their daily tasks (environmental measurements, voice recognition, emergency exercises). They are also conducting a science popularization experiment in collaboration with secondary school pupils. Inspired by the film The Martian, in which an astronaut grows potatoes on the Red Planet, the aim of this experiment is to compare plant growth in Martian soil with growth in terrestrial soil! Sylvestre Maurice presents the SUPERCAM / Martian Exploration educational kit

The ‘SUPERCAM - Martian Exploration’ educational kit project was initiated by five partners: ISAE-SUPAERO, the Toulouse Academy, CNRS, CNES and Cité de l'espace. Under the guidance and supervision of astrophysicist Sylvestre Maurice, first-year students at ISAE-SUPAERO developed this educational tool to raise awareness of space exploration in classrooms, from sixth form to final year. This kit is available to middle and high school teachers and can be adapted to offer educational lessons related to this theme.

“OSE Intégrer une Grande École” with the OSE InGÉ program, ISAE-SUPAERO's student social opening program for scientific CPGE students, in partnership with the ISAE-SUPAERO Foundation, ENAC - Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile and the ENAC Foundation. The OSE InGÉ program provides personalized support for young girls and scholarship-holders throughout their preparatory classes for the Grandes Ecoles (CPGE), helping them to build their future plans and develop their ambitions. The stakes are threefold: the democratization of education linked to profound rather than structural transformations, the strengthening of #social openness in the grandes écoles and the engineering field, and the creation of an innovative scheme on the scale of an Occitanie region. Begun in 2022, the program was brought to life thanks to the collaboration of the teaching teams at three Toulouse high schools: Lycée Bellevue, Lycée Déodat de Séverac and Lycée Pierre de Fermat, the mobilization of ISAE-SUPAERO alumni and the support of our partners: the Conseil Régional de La Région Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée, Airbus, Elior Group and CREPS de Toulouse. It consists of : - customized mentoring: personalized, one-to-one support from a mentor who is an alumnus of the school, depending on availability and needs. An ISAE-SUPAERO alumnus provides support right up to the competitive entrance exams, offering his or her experience, support and listening skills to help answer questions and reinforce choices; - immersion courses to discover the campus of a Grande École, talk to former CPGE students and professionals with inspiring backgrounds, meet your mentor, consolidate your knowledge and learn how to better manage your CPGE years; - one-off events at partner high schools: an #orientation evening, testimonials from professionals, conferences, dinner/debates, training for #CPGE teachers on how to support vulnerable students. Students supported by our OSE L'ISAE-SUPAERO program restituted their projects on May 30 at the Grand Marché MIN Toulouse Occitanie! 730 middle and high school students from 6ᵉ to terminale, supported under the social openness and cordée de la réussite program, closed a year of tutoring and projects with nearly 75 achievements presented. Every year, over 120 students from the Institute, the Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse III - UPSSITECH engineering school and the École nationale de la Météorologie volunteer to organize and take part in scientific and sports workshops, tutoring programs, visits and outings 🤸‍♀️ This year, a Commitment Award was symbolically presented at the Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO Scholarship Ceremony to all the students involved, via Jules Paindessous and Odile De La Rue, loyal volunteers who have been committed to the program since they joined the Institute. Bravo to them for their support!

Women's Campus Day 2026 “Inspiring younger generations and young girls”: astronaut Sophie Adenot's commitment continues

The first edition of ISAE-SUPAERO's “Campus au féminin” days in 2016, attended by astronaut Sophie Adenot, a graduate of the school, was met with great enthusiasm by middle and high school girls. Given its success, the program has become a permanent fixture and now reaches hundreds of young girls every year, allowing them to discover careers in science and engineering.
