Henry de Plinval arrived on the ISAE-SUPAERO campus last August, and has taken up his new post as the school's Director of Research and Educational Resources. Portrait of Henry Plinval.

Can you tell us about your background?

I began working in industry, at Safran, on inertial units: a rich experience from the point of view of technical subjects, industrial organisation, customer presence and requirements.

However, the research bug was already biting… and I decided to join ONERA in Toulouse in 2008. I then worked in automation, on different applications (aeronautics, space, naval – civil and defence), and did my thesis on vision-based UAV piloting. Later, in 2015, I was asked to become director of the UAV programme, in charge of this fascinating subject – on which ISAE-SUPAERO is also carrying out a lot of remarkable work.

In 2021, I wanted to take on more hierarchical responsibilities and I became deputy director of ONERA’s physics department: an opening onto subjects that are absolutely remarkable in their richness and technicality. I then took over as head of the low-speed wind tunnels department, a very complementary role because it is much more industrial.

I'm now at ISAE-SUPAERO, where I'm finding a lot of similarities with the various slices of life I've just mentioned! It's a great joy for me to rediscover these echoes of subjects I've come across before, to encounter both passion and excellence, and to discover and learn about dimensions I'm less familiar with.

What will your responsibilities be at ISAE-SUPAERO?

I’m in charge of the Research and Educational Resources Department. It’s an exciting role that covers a wide range of aspects. The first thing that strikes me is the quality of the people who make up this department: the human quality; the quality of the research that is carried out – often with remarkable resources; and the quality of the teaching.

My first task will be to continue to develop these qualities, but also to make them known both externally and internally. To do this, we will need to continue on the path of excellence in research and in the service of educational missions, with the considerable resources that have been allocated to them.

What issues do you consider to be priorities in your mission?

There are a number of important issues, some of which are particularly important for our business. The joint laboratory that we are building with ENAC is, of course, an essential decision that we must now make work, with the synergies and increased visibility that it will bring us.
Another key decision is the one that brings us into the dynamic of the University of Toulouse, which, here too, should see our international recognition grow even further.

Alongside these major moves, weneed to consolidate our teams, which have grown very strongly over the last ten years, and strengthen the balance between teaching, upstream research, partnerships, industrial contracts and European funding.

All of this is to ensure that we continue to be at the very top of teaching and research in the aeronautics and space fields that are our core business!

Passionate about science since childhood

Mattéo, who grew up in Lorient, where his passion for science was born: ” I ‘ ve had a passion for science ever since I was a little boy,” he confides. Choosing to do a BAC SSI was ” an obvious choice and an opportunity to take my passion a little further “. His academic career then took another turn, when he was admitted to the Ginette preparatory school (Lycée Sainte-Geneviève), following an application he had made ” without really believing in it “, he admits.

These two years of preparatory classes were a real challenge for him: “I was faced with a difficulty that was quite unprecedented for me. But, buoyed by the spirit of the class and the mutual support between students, I was able to enjoy those years”.

“ The discovery of new disciplines, approached in a very rigorous way, was an essential part of those years “, he adds. He remembers being amazed to unravel the equations explaining how a microwave works, or to discover the Venturi effect.

ISAE-SUPAERO: living your passion

At the end of his two years of preparatory classes and fascinated by the world of aerospace, Mattéo chose ISAE-SUPAERO, attracted by its technical side, its team spirit and its sporting activities (surfing, mountaineering, parachuting): “his preferred choice”, he stresses.

” At ISAE-SUPAERO, my passion for science only grew,” he says. ” I didn’t know where to turn, between fluid mechanics, signal processing, structural dynamics and applied maths. It was there that I finally understood what all those obscure prep school theorems were for – it was a revelation for me.

A gap year rich in knowledge and adventure

In the middle of his second year on the general engineering course at ISAE-SUPAERO, Mattéo began his gap year in two parts, “after three years with his head in the handlebars, to find out in practical terms how the theoretical knowledge he had acquired was being applied “.

He began with a 6-month placement at DGA TA in the Fleet Monitoring department. ” The idea of my placement was to use artificial intelligence algorithms to predict the damage suffered by Mirages 2000 during different flight sequences, and to understand how this damage affected the aircraft’s lifespan “.

Mattéo then went on an academic exchange to Toronto, where he was able to explore new scientific subjects such as robotics, structural dynamics in civil engineering and artificial intelligence, as well as discovering the country. ” I was also able to venture out, during the roaring of the caribou, into vast landscapes that were completely untouched by man ,” he explains.

A trip to South America before returning... by sailboat!

For the remaining six months of his gap year, Mattéo chose to go travelling in South America: ” I think that during these years, travelling, discovering and meeting new people are excellent ways of growing internally, taking a step back and, above all, confronting our way of thinking with reality.

It was an opportunity for him to let himself be carried along by the unexpected, between trekking at high altitude, cycling in the Andes and surfing on the Pacific coast, mostly on his own, “at first with only a rudimentary knowledge of Spanish “.

When it came time to return to France, and considering that his carbon footprint had already been greatly exceeded for his first Atlantic crossing, Mattéo chose to return by sailboat to Lorient.

” I’ve managed to find a sailboat so that I can return to port with three other sailors, heading for Lorient. Here I am, on a voyage lasting more than a month, buffeted by the waves, cut off from the world, in the middle of the ocean“.

It was a hugely formative experience for him, leading him to ” question the notions of progress and the race for profit, and to criticise our Western lifestyle where everything moves at 100 km/h!

A natural choice in^3rd year: “simulations of complex systems” and “signals and systems”.

Back at ISAE-SUPAERO for his 3rdᵉ year, it was natural for Mattéo to choose the “signals and systems” field of expertise and the “simulations of complex systems” field of application.

” It was a natural choice for me. Digital simulation and automatic control are at the crossroads of most of the engineering fields I’m passionate about, ” confides Mattéo.

An award-winning end-of-studies internship

His end-of-studies internship, carried out between ONERA and ISAE-SUPAERO, was a great success.

Mattéo won the regional and then the national André Blanc-Lapierre prize from the SEE for his work on data-based structured identification of the 2D Maxwell equations as a port-Hamiltonian system. His internship also enabled him to take part in the PEGASUS student conference, where he came second. This work also led to participation in an international conference and the publication of a journal article in the COMPEL journal (‘Port-Hamiltonian reduced order modelling of the 2D Maxwell equations’).

Under the supervision of Charles Poussot-Vassal (ONERA) and Denis Matignon (ISAE-SUPAERO), this internship enabled him to discover two fascinating theories: Hamiltonian port systems and the Loewner framework, applied to the 2D Maxwell equations.

” In aerospace engineering, solving Maxwell’s equations is essential for the design and analysis of numerous systems such as antennas, radars and the design of stealth technologies. However, these equations often result in very large models. The calculation time required to solve these systems can be very long (sometimes up to several months of simulation). These models are therefore unusable for iterative design processes.

Model reduction offers a solution for simplifying their complexity while retaining their critical characteristics. To illustrate the capabilities of the method used, the figure shows a snapshot of the results of the time simulations (of the magnetic field H and the electric field E) of the full-order model (FOM) compared with the reduced model, which is 13 times smaller and 100 times faster,” explains Mattéo.

Mattéo was then selected by ISAE-SUPAERO to take part in the PEGASUS student conference, held this year in Prague. This annual event brings together students from Europe’s leading aerospace schools. It was an opportunity for him to meet many students from all over Europe, giving rise to extremely enriching exchanges, both on a scientific and social level.

The conference also included a student competition, based on the evaluation of submitted scientific papers and oral presentations.

Mattéo came second, again in recognition of the work he had carried out during his final year internship.

The award was doubly well deserved, as Mattéo decided to make the return journey from Prague by bike, just as he did when he crossed the Atlantic in a sailing boat!

” Always with a view to reducing my carbon footprint, and given the price of the outward train ticket, I decided to make the return journey by bike. I’d also like to thank the Alumni Association for the grant they awarded me to finance the outward journey.

A thesis to reduce emissions from the aviation sector

A recent graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Mattéo has started a thesis between IMS in Bordeaux and ONERA in Toulouse on fault-tolerant active control of the flutter phenomenon.

” The aim is to design commercial aircraft with high aspect ratios in order to reduce fuel consumption and hence carbon emissions in the aviation sector “, he explains.

Mattéo sees this thesis as a new personal challenge, a way of “questioning the differences in expectations and opinions that sometimes arise between the worlds of research and industry”.

3 questions to Marie Delaroche, 3ᵉ year student and MDRS 293 crew commander

Since February 18, seven ISAE-SUPAERO engineering students have been living a simulated Martian life and carrying out experiments in collaboration with CNES and several research laboratories at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in UTAH (USA)! For the second time, the mission is led by a woman: Marie Delaroche, a passionate #spaceexplorer, who was already part of crew 275 departing in 2023. We asked her 3 questions to find out more about the challenges of this mission and her feelings as #flightcommander! Alongside her, three young women and three young men in their 2ᵉ year of #engineering studies have taken on the roles of astronomer, scientist, botanist, journalist, health worker and onboard engineer. They are all members of the Mars Club ISAE-SUPAERO, a student association for the popularization of science focused on the Red Planet and the missions dedicated to its exploration and study. They are currently experimenting with AI4U, the artificial intelligence that assists astronauts in their daily tasks (environmental measurements, voice recognition, emergency exercises). They are also conducting a science popularization experiment in collaboration with secondary school pupils. Inspired by the film The Martian, in which an astronaut grows potatoes on the Red Planet, the aim of this experiment is to compare plant growth in Martian soil with growth in terrestrial soil! Arnaud Prost, ESA reserve astronaut and ISAE-SUPAERO alumnus: “I was incredibly lucky to be here”

Fighter pilot and reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), Arnaud Prost returned to his former school on Thursday March 28 to meet 200 secondary school students as part of the ISAE SUPAERO OSE program. It was an opportunity for him to recall the “great memories” of his student experience at ISAE-SUPAERO, his long-standing commitment to the student social outreach program and the “Aquanauts” scheme he set up with OSE l'ISAE-SUPAERO. And in passing, he offers a few words of advice to young people who might dream of following in his footsteps: “Don't let yourself be convinced that one of these paths isn't for you!” A 2017 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Arnaud Prost is among those selected for the ESA Astronaut Class of 2022, alongside Sophie Adenot and Anthea Comellini, both also alumni of the school. They join other illustrious ESA astronauts who have already studied at the school: Thomas Pesquet, Luca Parmitano and Samantha Cristoforetti. Since 1970, ISAE-SUPAERO has contributed to the progress of the space age through its training, research and innovation activities. As the only organization in France to offer degree courses (engineering, master's, specialized master's, doctorate) covering all 22 space-related themes identified by CNES, the Institute offers a royal road to space careers. Meeting with Joseph Risson, engineering student and winner of a scholarship for his Viraj H2 project

On Friday, 8 December, the Swiss Jean-Jacques and Felicia Lopez-Loreta Foundation for Academic Excellence awarded a prize to Viraj H2, a project developed at ISAE-SUPAERO. Joseph Risson, a third-year engineering student, is studying a hybridisation between a hydrogen turboprop engine and a fuel cell in order to accelerate the decarbonisation of air transport. The €1 million grant will enable Joseph and his partner Paul de Goÿs to validate the technology behind their innovation.

Artery In Microgravity (#AIM), the first student scientific experiment designed and developed in collaboration since 2018 by ISAE-SUPAERO and Polytechnique Turin, was launched on 23 November 2022 by Space X's Dragon cargo ship to the International Space Station (ISS)! Selected by the ESA as part of its ‘Orbit your thesis’ programme, AIM aims to study the behaviour of the heart and its arteries in space, in order to determine whether people with heart problems will one day be able to stay there.

From classroom to cockpit: flying activities at ISAE-SUPAERO

Take a video tour of the school's Lasbordes Air Operations Center (COAL). With a fleet of 9 light aircraft, the COAL offers 3 types of activities: - Pilot training to obtain the Private Pilot's License (PPL), which enables students to fly single-engine aircraft. - Practical work directly linked to the school's teaching programs, from flight mechanics to an introduction to flight test techniques for continuing education. - Research into human factors and pilot cognitive mechanisms in real time during flight. At ISAE-SUPAERO, engineering and Master's students are lucky enough to be able to take their pilot's license just a few kilometers from the campus. Several instructors accompany them and train them to fly. All are members of the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Operation Research Department, headed by Valérie Budinger.

To strengthen the links between industry and research, more than 10 industrial R&D engineers have been made available to ISAE-SUPAERO as part of the France Relance plan! Cyril Geneste, research engineer at Latecoere, is one of them. Together with Miguel Charlotte, Associate Professor at the Institute, he looks back on this fruitful two-year collaboration. Their work, carried out in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories, focused on the behavior of aircraft door seals, which ensure cabin airtightness. Thanks to the Institute's cutting-edge equipment and academic expertise, Cyril Geneste was able in particular to carry out numerical modeling of seals in order to test their behavior. Students in their 3rdᵉ year of engineering studies were also involved in this work.

Can you tell us about your background?

I did a Bachelor’s degree in physics with research in astrophysics at McGill in Montreal. My universe revolved around space and the stars. While doing research, I realised that you really have to be there at the right time to make THE right discovery in science… That got me thinking and I wanted to go down a path where I would have a bit more control. I decided to study aerospace at ISAE-SUPAERO.

So I did a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering specialising in Space Systems, with research in mission analysis alongside Stéphanie Lizy-Destrez on the three-body problem. That’s how I discovered what I really liked: being able to combine physics and maths. After my work placement at Airbus and graduation, I moved to the UK to work as a flight dynamics engineer at One Web Satellites, where I worked in shifts on consoles for operating satellites, and in particular on anti-collision manoeuvres. I’m currently following ESA’s Young Graduate Traineeships programme. I divide my time between operations for the Gateway moon station and mission analysis for all the lunar missions.

Why did you decide to pursue an international career?

It’s a very natural thing for me because I grew up abroad, in England and Spain. The choice wasn’t necessarily to have an international career, but to open myself up to all the possibilities of working in the world!

What particularly appeals to me is working in multicultural teams, and not necessarily abroad. I find that environments with many different nationalities are very rich. Everyone brings their own experiences, ideas and ways of working and, generally speaking, I find the professional relationships very respectful and mature.

What advice would you give to someone looking for an international career?

Go for it! It doesn’t matter if you don’t have the level of English or Spanish, it will come. What counts is enthusiasm and motivation, even if it’s a bit scary. Studies at ISAE-SUPAERO offer the possibility of doing this as a gap year or for the end-of-studies internship. Apply now!

Can you tell us about your background?

I’m Mexican and very curious by nature!

An aeronautical engineer with a degree from the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico, I continued my academic preparation with a Master in Aerospace Engineering at ISAE SUPAERO in France.

My professional career started in 2018 at Airbus Commercial in the Pylon Engineering team where I contributed to different activities for four years: Research & Technology (R&T), In-Service support, A321-XLR certification. In the summer of 2022, I moved over to Purchasing as R&T MFT Leader to coordinate R&T activities in the Aerostructures Fuselage scope. It’s a cross-functional role with the opportunity to contribute to the development of new technologies and the industrial system of tomorrow.

Why did you decide to pursue an international career?

My desire to discover and experience new things has always guided my decisions. What’s more, as I’m passionate about aviation, I’ve always wanted to work in the world capital of aeronautics, i.e. Toulouse.

What’s more, a profile with academic or professional experience abroad is more attractive to international companies. This is the case at Airbus, where multiculturalism is part of everyday life. An industry in contact with customers, suppliers and employees of different origins requires profiles capable of adapting to diversity and varied working methods.

For these reasons, and many others, such as acquiring new language skills and soft-skills, I decided to internationalise my career.

What advice would you give to someone looking for an international career?

Academic or professional experience abroad is a great advantage on a CV, but above all it’s a personal enrichment. So pack your suitcase and get your dreams off the ground!

One word that would define your career?

Enriching.

Let's introduce yourself

After completing my preparatory classes for the Grandes Écoles at the INP Bordeaux preparatory school, I continued my training as a chemical and materials engineer at ENSMAC (Ecole Nationale Supérieure en Matériaux, Agroalimentaire et Chimie). There, I acquired a multidisciplinary scientific and technical foundation as well as the critical thinking skills necessary for the profession. Having wanted to work in the space industry since high school, I became involved in student associations promoting science, notably the Association d’Aéronautique et Astronautique de France (3AF), the Association Universitaire d’Astronomie and the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC). I now work at the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of the Young Graduate Trainee programme in Business Development. From a very scientific background, I have moved on to a profile combining technology, business and innovation strategy. This is an experience that I am able to enjoy thanks in part to the Advanced Master’s® MGPIE at ISAE-SUPAERO.

What motivated you to pursue your studies in a Advanced Master's® programme, and more specifically in MGPIE?

During my engineering studies, I often had the opportunity to work in research, development, and innovation environments on academic and community projects, hackathons, and internships. These experiences allowed me to take a step back from the very centred Cartesian engineering mindset of ‘technology as a solution’ and ‘technology-push’, as Eric Ries points out in his book Lean Start-up: “It doesn’t matter if we build something on time and on budget if we build something that no one is going to use.” To solve the urgent socio-economic and environmental problems we face, we definitely need solutions that are resolutely useful, resilient and sober, in line with our social and environmental convictions throughout their entire life cycle – from design to recycling. Having worked in start-ups, SMEs, laboratories and large companies, I have seen the influence of corporate strategy and organisation on technical decisions. The role of an engineer in a company therefore seemed too narrow to me to have a direct impact on the innovations that will shape the future. The Advanced Master’s® in MGPIE at ISAE-SUPAERO helps students understand the economic, organisational and financial challenges of a company and how to promote innovation in an environment with multiple constraints. The programme has a practical and comprehensive approach: the theory learned can be directly and concretely applied through the Innovative Exploratory Project (PIE). Beyond training, it offers a real entrepreneurial experience, and this principle appealed to me.

What has the MGPIE programme brought you?

The MGPIE Advanced Master’s® allowed me to complement my technical engineering training with a business and strategy dimension, resolutely focused on creating value through innovation. I was then able to take on positions close to the decision-making spheres of companies. For me, the main advantage of the programme was understanding the competitive, political and financial environment in which companies operate. The strategies explored during the programme (Design Thinking, Blue Ocean Strategy, Lean Start-up, Agile Method, for example), training in market research and negotiation courses were key drivers for the start of my career. Beyond the knowledge gained from the master’s programme, I was able to open up to other fields beyond space, such as maritime, energy, sports, health and agronomy, thanks to the diversity of the profiles of the students enrolled in the master’s programme and the diversity of the lecturers.

What are you doing today? What are your plans?

Today, I work in Business Development at the European Space Agency (ESA) on telecommunications projects, particularly in the civil security sector. My role is to support the launch of a new commercial programme for the Agency: strategic definition, ecosystem analysis, review of funding applications, communication, legal aspects. I am in constant contact with partner companies and signatory delegations. I use the skills I acquired during my master’s degree on a daily basis, such as defining business models and negotiation. At the same time, I am in the process of setting up an entrepreneurial project to combat urban heat islands, currently supported by ESA BIC Netherlands.

Any advice for young graduates interested in the MGPIE programme?

In our rapidly changing environment, if you want to make an impact by enabling the emergence of more virtuous innovations or new practices that are more in tune with the speed of current changes, the MGPIE Advanced Master will provide you with the theoretical and practical foundations you need to understand the levers for action in a company – whether it is your own or the one you work for. The quality of the teaching, the ability of the lecturers to challenge you, and the study environment (fablab, start-up incubator, entrepreneurial coaching, atmosphere conducive to creativity) will give you the opportunity to express your personality and convictions during the course, particularly in your Innovative Exploratory Project.

What is your background?

Like many engineers, I began my training with a “Classe Préparatoire aux Grandes Ecoles” (CPGE) where I was able to acquire a solid scientific and technical grounding. After 2 years, this CPGE enabled me to join the Université de Technologie de Compiègne (UTC) to train as a general engineer. At the end of this course, I decided to join the first class of the MGPIE Advanced Masters® at ISAE-SUPAERO.

What motivated you to continue your studies in the Advanced Masters® and more specifically in MGPIE?

After my engineering degree, my main objective was to acquire dual skills – technical and managerial – so as to have a CV that stood out from the crowd, but also to be able to think more broadly about the projects I was going to undertake.

On the job market, it’s an undeniable advantage for technical profiles to understand the basics of corporate finance, project management, commercial issues and negotiation.

What have you gained from the MS MGPIE? What are the main advantages of the course?

With the MGPIE Advanced Masters®, on the one hand I obtained the dual skills I was looking for, and on the other, I benefited from ISAE-SUPAERO’s high profile and reputation on the job market. In addition, the richness of the course lies in the diversity of the profiles that can join the MS: engineers, business school graduates, university students and experienced professionals. This diversity is also reflected in the different career prospects open to future graduates: Entrepreneur, Project Manager, Project Management Officer, Innovation Management Consultant, Innovation Financing Consultant, etc. Finally, the Innovative Exploratory Project (IEP) is an excellent opportunity offered by this Specialised Masters® to work in a team on a study for the creation and marketing of a new technological product. In this way, the theoretical knowledge learned in class can be quickly put into practice through this exercise.

What are you doing today? What are your projects?

I’m currently working as a consultant in innovation financing and management at Fi Group, an international specialist in the performance and financing of R&D, innovation and investment. In a nutshell, my role is to help companies – from start-ups to major groups – structure their innovation and R&D operations (framework, planning, costs, risks) as well as their search for public funding (Research Tax Credit, Innovation Tax Credit, grants and other financial aid, etc.). Alongside this main professional activity, I’m pleased to be able to give a course every year in the MGPIE Advanced Master on the levers of public funding for innovation.

Any advice for recent graduates interested in the MGPIE programme?

If you are looking for a career in project management, innovation consulting or simply creating your own start-up, then the MGPIE programme will be a real asset, with its high-level courses and fascinating lecturers. Can you tell us about your career as an entrepreneur?

My name is Pierre Damien Vaujour and I’m a graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO (class of 2008). I’ve always been interested in space, which is why I did my training at this institute. I first worked in European and American space agencies (ESA and NASA). When I was at NASA, I had a lot of friends who were in Silicon Valley start-ups, which made me want to join a start-up like everyone else.

At the time, in 2010, there weren’t many start-ups in the space sector, but since 2012 a lot of them have been created, a bit like the new movement known as ‘NewSpace’. I then joined a start-up called SPIRE where there were 6 people, it was quite small. I joined before their Series A funding and stayed for 3 years. In those 3 years, we grew from 6 to 120 employees. We were producing low-cost, high-performance CubeSats.

4 years ago, I decided to create Loft Orbital, with the aim of reusing standard satellites in manufacturing lines. For the first time in history, there were companies making satellites on assembly lines. Instead of making them one by one, they were being made by the hundreds!

The idea was to say to ourselves: couldn’t we take a satellite off the manufacturing line without modifying it and develop all the interface technologies that would allow us to do plug and play? To achieve this, we need to be able to create an interface that allows us to keep the satellite without modifying it and then plug and play the instruments. So internally, we have developed embedded software technologies to communicate with our own hardware.

The idea is to give customers a clear online interface, where they can control their instrument directly without having to know anything about space. To enable people who know absolutely nothing about space to deploy and use instruments in space.

What advice would you give to a young entrepreneur?

You have to make sure that you’re doing it for a good reason and that it’s worthwhile: starting out on an ambitious project. Sometimes it’s more complicated to do something small than to do something big. The advantage of an ambitious project is that we need capital to make it work. It’s easier to raise capital, to have people following you on big projects, rather than on something a bit small where people think “why should I invest if it’s so small? I’m going to take a risk but there won’t necessarily be a return”.

My message would be: Go for it! Don’t be afraid of failure. If you’re young and you’re starting out, you’re bound to fail, but that doesn’t matter, you’ll keep trying until you succeed.

Can you tell us about your business project, SNAP ACCESS?

I co-founded Snapaccess with Loïc Hardouin, a friend I met at the MGPIE programme.

During discussions with a sanitation services company, we realised just how much their work was slowed down by having to go back and forth to fetch keys. Often, service providers have to travel miles to find an access point that will allow them to enter a house or infrastructure. Service companies aren’t the only ones to face this problem; companies with remote sites have to manage a large number of sets of keys from afar. So our aim is to make it easier for companies and service providers to exchange keys.

Since our launch in September 2022, we have provided an initial response to this need. Snapaccess offers a key box connected by 4G or WIFI to an online platform. The solution can be operated entirely remotely, giving customers real-time access to their buildings. Our system is of interest to a large number of companies, which is why our objective for 2023 is to boost our sales and improve our service, in order to provide our customers with the ideal solution. To achieve this, we also want to expand the existing team, which consists of Loïc and myself, as well as our communications and marketing student, Carla.

Winner of the Jean Pierson prize for her leadership qualities

In December 2022, Anne-Alice received the Jean Pierson Prize, awarded each year to a graduating student of the Institute who has demonstrated particular leadership qualities during their years of study. This prize from the Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO has enabled him to reflect on the qualities required of a leader, and his impact within an organisation. An encouraging reward for his Snapaccess entrepreneurial project!

What have you gained from the Advanced Master MGPIE? What are the main advantages of the programme?

The MGPIE has given me a great deal from both an academic and a human point of view. The diversity of the courses offered is the course’s main asset.

With the innovation courses, I was able to broaden my knowledge of a large number of new technologies. I remember the course on biomimicry, which particularly piqued my curiosity. Other courses, such as creativity, push us out of the Cartesian mental space that we have as engineers, by getting us to think differently.

The main advantage of the course is the PIE (Projet Innovant Exploratoire), a project to create a start-up that follows us throughout the course. It gives us the opportunity to experience what it’s like to set up a business.

Work focuses on the development of a product to be prototyped, using ISAE-SUPAERO’s Innovspace Fablab, and on developing and understanding the target market. The project therefore provides an opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship, to challenge ourselves and to learn how to manage a project as part of a team.

What’s more, most of the courses in the Advanced Master are taught by professionals, which gives the lessons a real-life context and avoids abstract theories.

Finally, the programme has a large alumni network, with over 1,500 alumni! This network helps to increase the number of career opportunities, which are already very attractive on completion of the course.

What motivated you to continue your studies in the Advanced Masters® and more specifically in MGPIE?

At the end of my end-of-studies placement at MBDA, I needed to broaden my horizons. My scientific training gave me a solid technical background, but I was curious to discover other fields. So I chose an Advanced Master to complement my initial training in project management, finance, marketing, agile methods and so on. What’s more, I’ve always been attracted to entrepreneurship, and the teaching on this subject made me decide to enrol on this course. It was probably the best decision I ever made!

Any advice for recent graduates interested in the MGPIE course?

As engineers, our primary job is to be able to respond to problems, and the MGPIE courses give us additional tools to respond to the future assignments we will be given in companies. Generally speaking, the course provides all the keys to leading and managing a project in its entirety, whether it’s an entrepreneurial project or not. So the only advice I can give is to apply without hesitation.

World Engineer Day 2020: a young alumni puts his engineering skills to work for the climate

As a 2017 ISAE-SUPAERO graduate, Maxime Efoui Hess has made defending the climate his personal and professional leitmotiv. Convinced that engineers have a major role to play in protecting the environment, the young graduate has taken the high road by joining The Shift Project, a public interest lobby working for a carbon-free economy. He believes that engineers have the necessary technical skills and a scientific vision capable of changing current economic and industrial models by taking account of environmental and social issues.

From conquering space to protecting the environment: a commitment to the climate

As a young high school graduate, Maxime Efoui Hess dreamed of working in space research. Amazed by the human adventure of the conquest of space, he joined ISAE-SUPAERO in 2013.

During his gap year, he began to think about how to include environmental issues in his professional life and drew parallels between the climate and space.

In these two fields, which seem to be poles apart, a closed ecosystem to which no new resources can be added is being studied. Above all, we become aware of the planet we live on and the damaging effects of global warming on it.

Indeed, who better than an astronaut to see the Earth as a whole and measure, from a distance, the impact of carbon constraints on its health?

In his 3rd year at ISAE-SUPAERO, the student chose to follow the ” Energy, Transport, Environment ” course offered by the Institute. It was during this course that Maxime discovered The Shift Project, a public interest lobby that advocates a scientific vision capable of providing solutions for engineering to free it from the carbon constraint. The Shift Project deals with concrete, physical problems, including technical skills and scientific analysis. Students are seduced and see a career path taking shape that is in line with their commitments.

So, at the end of his studies, Maxime joined the lobby to put his engineering skills at the service of the climate. The young graduate is certain of this: engineers have a role to play in every industrial project, integrating environmental concepts from the outset and reducing society’s ecological impact as far as possible.

Engineers must use their skills and global vision to change the current model

When Maxime joined The Shift Project, he didn’t follow the traditional route of a graduate from a top engineering school. And for good reason: he is convinced that engineers have a role to play in the ecological transition. Engineers have learned to take an overall view of the various stages in a project: from its inception to its final use, from the choice of components to their recycling.

Their role? To make the right decision by encompassing all the components, all the aspects, all the purposes. So even if a decision has no direct bearing on the climate at a given moment, it can nevertheless change everything. By contributing their technical and intellectual skills, engineers help to change a model. To change society’s model using the “engineer’s vision”, the grandes écoles have a role to play.

At the end of 2019, The Shift Project produced a report on the place of the environment and climate in higher education programmes. There is strong demand from students and lecturers to take environmental constraints into account when setting up research projects and training programmes. Higher education establishments are developing curricula in which the environment is a key priority, and are setting up numerous initiatives to raise awareness and train students in their role in defending the climate. All that remains is to add these initiatives to a systemic vision and prove to students that their skills are useful and even essential for changing the current model and adapting it to the climate challenges.

Students aware of environmental issues

As soon as they started their new academic year, the 1st year engineering students took part in a climate awareness day at the beginning of September.

Caroline BERARD, former Head of Engineering Programme, reminded the 220 new students that “ the aeronautics industry has met three challenges: making aircraft fly, making them safe and making them accessible to a wider public by lowering production costs. Now there’s a fourth, and it’s up to you to rise to it: designing carbon-free aircraft. The tone is set!

More than 80% of first-year students at ISAE-SUPAERO want to be trained in sustainable development.
To meet this demand, ISAE-SUPAERO is offering an “Energy Transition” module as part of the engineering curriculum. In 3rd year, students can choose “Energy, transport and environment ” as their field of application.

An “environmental engineering” certificate is also offered to all ISAE Group students.

Climate change a priority in higher education

In 2019, Olivier Lesbre, Managing Director, signed the manifesto issued by The Shift Project, a think tank working for a carbon-free economy. Recent work on the teaching of climate and energy issues in higher education has revealed a strong desire on the part of the higher education teaching community and students for an organised response to training on climate issues. More than 80 heads of higher education establishments and 1,000 teachers and researchers, leading a list of some 7,500 signatories, are calling on the government to “initiate a transition strategy for higher education that positions the climate as a top priority”.

The Cedar Chair for Eco-Design of AiRcraft, created by Airbus 6 years ago, supports research into innovative concepts to prepare the next generation of transport aircraft.
The Safran-AEGIS Chair, launched in 2016, aims to reduce the environmental footprint (pollutant discharges and noise emissions) of aircraft propulsion by working on new engine and airframe integration formulas.
The Daher Chair, launched in 2019, to conduct research into the design and certification of light aircraft with hybrid-electric propulsion.
