Testimony from Alexandre Bouraoui, engineering student by apprenticeship and IAC 2025 Award Winner

Final-year engineering apprentice, specializing in Industrialisation and Methods for Aeronautics and Space, Alexandre Bouraoui was recently honored at the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2025) in Sydney, where he won the prestigious Hermann Oberth Gold Medal in the Graduate category. We spoke with him about his award and his studies at ISAE-SUPAERO.

Can you present yourself and speak about your acadmic path?

I was born in France and grown in Tunisia.

Before joining ISAE-SUPAERO, I graduated from a BUT in Physical Measurements (Mesures Physiques) at the University of Toulouse.

I am currently a final-year student of the “Diplôme d’ingénieur” by Apprenticeship (‘Industrialisation and Methods for Aeronautics and Space’) at ISAE-SUPAERO. I am also doing an apprenticeship at Thales Alenia Space as a payload architect apprentice for communication satellites, where I develop simulation and analysis tools for other architects.

You were awarded the Hermann Oberth Gold Medal at IAC 2025 in Sydney. Why did you receive this prize?

I received this award after being selected by the Aeronautics and Astronautics Association of France (3AF) to represent France in the student competition at the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2025) in Sydney.

There, I presented a paper entitled “Characterization of the Stationarity of an ICP Plasma”. This work focuses on studying plasma stability and was carried out within the PAMPA team of the Electronics, Optronics, and Signal Department (DEOS) at ISAE-SUPAERO, under the supervision of Romain Pascaud and Valentin Mazières. The project began during my second year as part of an introductory research module: I had personally contacted Dr. Pascaud to work on this topic, driven by my strong interest in plasma physics and electric propulsion—two of my passions.

I had the tremendous honor of winning the Hermann Oberth Gold Medal for the best student paper in the main category (“Graduate”) during the closing ceremony, in front of more than a thousand people.

The IAC was an exceptional opportunity for networking, learning about the space sector, and experiencing such a magnificent environment as Sydney.

Can you tell us about your current studies at ISAE-SUPAERO? Why did you choose this programme?

I chose the “Diplôme d’ingénieur” by Apprenticeship (‘Industrialisation and Methods for Aeronautics and Space’) programme because it provides a better understanding of the professional world through hands-on experience.

I particularly appreciate the alternating schedule (two months at school, two months in the company), which I find very suitable: it allows us to fully focus either on the academic side or on our professional assignments. Moreover, this format has helped ease the financial burden on my parents. They supported me a lot during my undergraduate studies, but it would have been difficult for them to continue assisting me throughout the additional three years of the engineering programme.

What are your career plans after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to focus on research in satellite electric propulsion, either as an engineer or by starting a PhD, as this is what I am most passionate about. However, I am not closing the door to aerospace engineering in all its aspects, a field I greatly enjoy through my current experience at Thales Alenia Space.

Discover... ISAE-SUPAERO's mobile ground robots

ISAE-SUPAERO - as a center for training through research, research training and innovation - has a wide range of research equipment used in its 6 research departments. Today, we'd like to introduce you to mobile ground robots! Whether robots, airplanes, cars or even telephones, all these technologies are equipped with perception systems. Depending on the application, these sources of information make it possible to perceive the environment in which a system is evolving, and also to measure its own characteristics, such as speed or acceleration. This multitude of data must then be used, cross-referenced and interpreted within the navigation system to obtain the vehicle's position, but also, in the case of mapping applications, that of surrounding objects. Within the DEOS NAVIRRES team, researchers are interested in navigation systems and their application in complex environments where sensor information may be degraded, erroneous or unavailable. Mobile acquisition platforms are being developed. These are equipped with cameras, lidars, GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receivers, radars and inertial units, with the aim of obtaining the most efficient navigation system for the application in question. One of the team's research themes is the analysis of the degradation of sensor information, enabling the development of new robust and adaptive algorithms to compensate for environmental constraints. The aim is to make navigation systems more accurate and safer, for critical applications requiring strong reliability constraints, such as autonomous cars or exploration robotics.

FRENCH SUPERCAM INSTRUMENT RECORDING THE SOUND OF INGENUITY'S 4th FLIGHT

Located 80 meters from the rover at the moment of take-off, the small helicopter rose to 5 meters above the ground before covering a distance of 133 meters before returning to land where it had taken off from. SuperCam's scientific microphone, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO, recorded the sound emitted by the rotation of the Martian drone's blades during its flight. This sound has a characteristic frequency of 84 Hz, equivalent to the low “E” of a piano or the bass voice of a human being. “This is a big surprise for the whole scientific team,” says Naomi Murdoch, a researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO who is studying the data from the microphone. "Tests carried out in a Martian atmosphere simulator to design this instrument, and our theories of sound propagation, indicated that the microphone would have great difficulty picking up the sounds of the helicopter. Indeed, Mars' thin atmosphere strongly attenuates sound transmission. We needed a bit of luck to record the helicopter from such a distance. We're very pleased to have succeeded in obtaining this recording, which is proving to be a goldmine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere". Developed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and a consortium of CNRS laboratories and its partners, coordinated by CNES, SuperCam's microphone is derived from a consumer model adapted to withstand the Martian environment. It pursues 3 substantial scientific and technical objectives of the Mars 2020 mission: Study the sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks, to gain a better understanding of their mechanical properties. Improving our understanding of atmospheric phenomena (wind turbulence, dust eddies, wind interactions with the rover, and now with the helicopter). Understanding the sound signature of the rover's various movements (robotic arm and mast operations, driving on normal or uneven ground, pump monitoring, etc.). The microphone was first switched on a few hours after Perseverance landed. It recorded the first Martian sounds generated by turbulence in the atmosphere. It is used daily in conjunction with laser rock ablation for chemical analysis of Mars. ABOUT THE MARS 2020 MISSION: NASA is relying on Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the development of the Mars 2020 mission. SuperCam was developed jointly by LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA) and a consortium of laboratories attached to the CNRS, French universities and research establishments. Several Spanish universities, led by the University of Valladolid, are also contributing to the instrument. CNES is responsible to NASA for the French contribution to SuperCam. The instrument is operated alternately from LANL and the French Operations Center for Science and Exploration (FOCSE) at CNES in Toulouse.

Meteorite impact reveals new insights into Mars

In September 2021, NASA's InSight mission recorded a meteorite impact. Analysis of the data by scientists has revolutionised our understanding of the internal structure of Mars and its evolution. Its mantle is not homogeneous, as previously assumed, but composed of a layer of molten silicates overlying the core. From classroom to cockpit: flying activities at ISAE-SUPAERO

Take a video tour of the school's Lasbordes Air Operations Center (COAL). With a fleet of 9 light aircraft, the COAL offers 3 types of activities: - Pilot training to obtain the Private Pilot's License (PPL), which enables students to fly single-engine aircraft. - Practical work directly linked to the school's teaching programs, from flight mechanics to an introduction to flight test techniques for continuing education. - Research into human factors and pilot cognitive mechanisms in real time during flight. At ISAE-SUPAERO, engineering and Master's students are lucky enough to be able to take their pilot's license just a few kilometers from the campus. Several instructors accompany them and train them to fly. All are members of the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Operation Research Department, headed by Valérie Budinger.

ISAE-SUPAERO est un établissement d'enseignement supérieur axé sur la recherche et l'innovation, qui s'engage à concilier excellence scientifique, visibilité académique et proximité avec les objectifs industriels. L'astéroïde 8887 a été baptisé « Scheeres » en reconnaissance de ses contributions à la compréhension scientifique de l'environnement dynamique des astéroïdes. Pendant son séjour à l'ISAE-SUPAERO, le professeur Scheeres et l'équipe des systèmes spatiaux pour les applications planétaires ont collaboré à l'analyse des données DART et au développement de concepts visant à étudier la structure interne des astéroïdes lors de futures missions spatiales. Discover... CMOS image sensors at ISAE-SUPAERO

ISAE-SUPAERO - as a center for training through research, research training and innovation - has a wide range of research equipment used in its 6 research departments. Today, we present CMOS image sensors! CMOS image sensors are playing an increasingly important role in our everyday lives. For several years now, our team at ISAE-SUPAERO has been developing CMOS image sensors with a number of players in the field, and innovating by proposing new architectures and conditions of use requiring studies of both elementary components and more complex structures. Measurements are carried out on transistors and diodes with the help of an under-tip tester and a parametric analyzer enabling very low current measurements (10 aA). Similarly, simple structures containing innovative pixels can be operated with the tester using spike cards coupled to a word generator specially designed for image sensors. All these studies not only contribute to our understanding of the physics of photodetection, but also provide models for our simulators. They are also used to monitor manufacturing processes during the various production phases.

The sound of a Martian dust devil captured by the SuperCam microphone on Perseverance

This video and audio show the results obtained by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover and its SuperCam microphone when recording the sounds of a Martian dust devil passing overhead on 27 September 2021, the 215th Martian day or sol of the mission. The dust devil was 25 metres wide and at least 118 metres high, moving at a speed of approximately 19 km/h. This is the first time such a recording has been made, as capturing a dust devil requires a bit of luck. Indeed, it flew over the rover at a time when all of Perseverance's sensors measuring wind, pressure, temperature and dust, plus the NavigationXXX (Navcam) camera, were running. This allowed scientists to combine sounds, images and atmospheric data. The unique combination of this data, along with atmospheric modelling, enabled researchers to estimate the dimensions of the dust devil. Scientists cannot accurately predict when these vortices will occur. Rovers such as Perseverance and Curiosity monitor them regularly. When scientists notice that they are more frequent at a certain time of day or approaching from a certain direction, they focus their monitoring to try to capture a dust devil with all the sensors at their disposal. > To better understand the video, it shows three rows of images: - the row

Discover... the ISAE-SUPAERO irradiator

ISAE-SUPAERO – as a centre for training through research, research training and innovation – has a wide range of research equipment used within its six research departments. Today, we present the irradiator! As part of its research activities, ISAE-SUPAERO develops electronic components and systems for scientific and space applications. Space is a very aggressive environment, particularly because high-energy particles emitted by the sun or trapped in radiation belts threaten the health of astronauts, the properties of materials and the proper functioning of electronic chips. In order to reproduce the effects of this ionising radiation on electronic technologies in the laboratory, ISAE-SUPAERO has acquired an X-ray irradiation chamber with an energy of up to 320 keV. This video shows a typical use of this equipment: an electronic component to be tested is placed in the irradiation chamber, the X-ray tube is switched on, and the effects on the component's operation (in this case, an image sensor) are observed and measured in real time.

Discover... the ISAE-SUPAERO radio anechoic chamber

ISAE-SUPAERO – as a centre for training through research, research training and innovation – has a wide range of research equipment used within its six research departments. Today, we present the radio anechoic chamber! Drones and nanosatellites have many applications in the media, industry, agriculture and telecommunications sectors. These two types of platforms share the common constraint of having to carry complex systems in a small space. One of the key elements of on-board communication systems is the antenna, which must also be compact and lightweight. ISAE-SUPAERO, in collaboration with ENAC and ANYWAVES, is currently developing dielectric antennas made by 3D printing ceramics that meet the demanding criteria for integration on drones and nanosatellites. Thanks to the anechoic chamber available at ISAE-SUPAERO, researchers involved in the development of these original antennas can accurately characterise their radiation properties and thus validate the new technological solutions proposed.

Feedback: a Latecoere engineer in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories

To strengthen the links between industry and research, more than 10 industrial R&D engineers have been made available to ISAE-SUPAERO as part of the France Relance plan! Cyril Geneste, research engineer at Latecoere, is one of them. Together with Miguel Charlotte, Associate Professor at the Institute, he looks back on this fruitful two-year collaboration. Their work, carried out in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories, focused on the behavior of aircraft door seals, which ensure cabin airtightness. Thanks to the Institute's cutting-edge equipment and academic expertise, Cyril Geneste was able in particular to carry out numerical modeling of seals in order to test their behavior. Students in their 3rdᵉ year of engineering studies were also involved in this work.

Discover... ISAE-SUPAERO's cryogenic equipment for electrical testing

ISAE-SUPAERO - as a center for training through research, research training and innovation - has a wide range of research equipment used by its 6 research departments. Today, we present our cryogenic equipment for electrical testing! ISAE-SUPAERO's image sensor research group (CIMI) studies sensors in the visible wavelength range, but also sensors in different spectral ranges such as infrared. Detection of these longer wavelengths requires materials other than silicon for detection, combined with a silicon readout circuit for information processing, all operating at cryogenic temperature. In this context, ISAE-SUPAERO has developed electrical and electro-optical characterization benches for low-temperature microelectronic circuits, in order to extract and model their behavior and performance. These characterization benches can address both very simple circuits, such as transistors, and complex components (complete sensors) with up to 120 inputs/outputs.

Discover... the ISAE-SUPAERO plasma bench

ISAE-SUPAERO – as a centre for training through research, research training and innovation – has a wide range of research equipment used within its six research departments. Today, we present white plasma! With the emergence of #NewSpace, more and more CubeSats are being launched. On these small platforms (CubeSats consist of one or more standard 10 cm cubes), several subsystems must coexist. While electric propulsion solutions save space and weight on board, their electromagnetic compatibility with on-board communication systems is still being questioned today. ISAE-SUPAERO, in collaboration with CNES and LAPLACE, is currently developing simulation tools and characterisation methods to provide engineers with tools for designing CubeSats and effective testing methods to address this issue. This experimental bench developed at ISAE-SUPAERO allows the characterisation of a plasma discharge representative of an electric thruster, as well as the measurement of its interactions with microwave signals generated by nearby communication antennas. Finally, the experimental data obtained will be used to calibrate the numerical analysis tools currently being developed by our teams.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us what motivated you to join this programme?

My name is Lucas Hunziker, I am a dual Swiss and American citizen. I am a rising senior at the University of Washington. I chose this programme because I want to study and work in the aerospace sector in Europe.

What was your favourite part of the programme?

My favourite course was on launcher architecture and propulsion at ESTACA in Paris. As a structural engineering major, I was particularly interested in the design stages and structural vibration nodes. Outside of the classroom, I had a great time at the Paris Air Show.

What advice would you give to future participants?

This programme offers a good balance between classes, company visits and free time to discover French culture.

How does this programme enrich your academic career and professional prospects?

I gained a valuable overview of master’s programmes and on how the industry works in France, and I’m leaving with a much greater interest in studying in Europe in the future.

My name is Hamzah Fawaz and I am a rising junior at the University of Michigan, majoring in Aerospace Engineering and minoring in nuclear engineering. I chose to participate in this programme to further my knowledge of aerospace in another country than my own. It was also an opportunity to expand my professional network, build meaningful connections, earn academic credits, and have an unforgettable experience.

What was your favourite part of the programme?

One of the most memorable parts of the programme was the heat transfer course, where we learned how to use a new software called SYSTEMA THERMICA. We designed a satellite and performed heat transfer simulations and calculations on it, which was both challenging and rewarding. Outside the classroom, there were countless incredible events, but the dinner cruise on the Seine stood out. It was truly magnificent.

What advice would you give to future participants?

Living in Paris, Toulouse and Poitiers during the programme was an incredible experience, but I would recommend making the most of your free time to explore Europe as much as possible, or setting aside a few days to discover other regions of France. Also, try to get to know the members of your group as soon as possible. You may be hesitant at first, but they could end up becoming some of your closest friends.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us what motivated you to join this programme?

My name is Erika Wood. I am a junior at the University of Washington studying aerospace engineering. I decided to join the Aerospace Summer Programme because I was looking for an international approach to aerospace engineering. This programme not only gave me the opportunity to discover a country I had never visited before, but also allowed to participate in an incredible programme where I could see aeronautics from a different perspective.

What was your most memorable experience from this programme?

Honestly, it was the meals and free time we had, when we were all together, kicking the ball around, laughing, having fun and chilling, playing cards. Those breaks between classes, when we all kind of came together as a group in community on the campus, meeting students and professors.

What advice would you give to future participants?

You will learn a lot of high-level aerospace engineering concepts and techniques. But this programme is also about culture. It’s about discovering France and getting to know your peers from all over the United States and the world. I don’t think it’s all just serious. There are lots of fun moments, lots of games, and lots of independence where you can decide where you want to go, what you want to see together as a team, or just on your own.

How does this programme enrich your academic path and career prospects?

I have definitely seen a different side of the aerospace industry than the one I saw in the United States. One thing that was really important to me was to have this international approach, and now I have it, thanks to this programme, which has allowed me to discover companies like Airbus, Aura Aero and many others here in France. I now have an idea of different academic paths I could pursue after obtaining my degree, as well as companies I could potentially work for outside the United States. I can pursue my path in so many different places – perhaps Europe will be my next stepping stone.

What is your background?

I graduated from the Lycée Édouard Belin in Vesoul in 2019 with a Bac Scientifique, specialising in engineering sciences. It was also at this school that I passed my BIA (Brevet d’Initiation Aéronautique) in 2017, where I was top of the Bertrand Piccard class in the Besançon academy. I then entered the MPSI at the Lycée Victor Hugo in Besançon, before moving on to the MP at the same school. I was ranked 205ᵉ in the Mines Ponts competitive entrance exam in 2021, which enabled me to enter SUPAERO, which was my first choice!

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO? What do you think are the school's strengths?

Originally, I was passionate about aerospace and SUPAERO is well-known in this field, with alumni as inspiring as astronaut Thomas Pesquet (and now also Sophie Adenot), so it was a dream for me to come to such a school.

What’s more, as I had been sensitive to environmental and climate issues long before I started at SUPAERO, my ambition was to work either on decarbonising the aviation sector or on developing Earth observation missions to characterise and monitor global warming and its consequences.

Coming to SUPAERO made me fully aware of the scale of the environmental crisis and its consequences, particularly for the aerospace sector. More generally, the school is making a commendable effort to train its students in the issues facing the world today and tomorrow (particularly environmental issues) so that they are able to integrate their complexity into their careers.

SUPAERO’s generalist approach and the possibility for each student to choose the courses that best meet their expectations are a definite advantage, guaranteeing a personalised education: the horizon of possibilities is limitless when you study at SUPAERO! And there’s no shortage of student life: dozens of clubs (technical, sports, cultural, etc.), lots of events throughout the year, and Toulouse is the perfect city for students 😊

Can you tell us about your academic exchange? How was it a rewarding experience, both personally and academically?

I spent a semester at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. I was able to choose the courses I wanted, in energy, climate, and fluid mechanics, most of which were taught in English. It was the university’s academic excellence, its international outlook, and its unrivalled setting on the shores of Lake Geneva with its breathtaking views of the Alps that made me decide to go.

I really appreciated the living environment, the teaching methods, and the quality of the teaching, even though it required more work than at SUPAERO. Last but not least, this semester gave me the opportunity to discover Switzerland, a country with a rich variety of landscapes, cheeses, and chocolate!

What areas and subjects have you chosen for your 3rd year? Why did you make this choice?

My gap year was decisive in my choice of direction in the third year. I was able to do two placements: the first at CNES in data processing and research; the second in project management at VALECO, an SME developing wind and solar projects. This gave me a clearer picture of my interests and a more concrete idea of where I wanted to start my career.

I then chose to enter the ETE-Energy and SDS fields. I chose ETE because I believe that environmental issues, and in particular those regarding the energy transition, are a priority if all sectors, and in particular the aerospace sector, are to have a place in a world faced with the consequences of global warming. I chose SDD because I believe that the relevant use of data, possibly using artificial intelligence tools, can inform strategic decision-making in order to serve the ecological transition, among other things.

What are your career plans?

I’m going to do my SFE at EDF in Grenoble in the General Technical Division. My role will be to carry out a statistical analysis of frequency anomalies on French island electricity networks (Corsica, French overseas departments and territories, etc.) and to propose artificial intelligence methods for automatically detecting or even predicting these anomalies. This work will enable electricity network managers to improve their predictive maintenance methods, to help them make investment decisions to improve these networks and also to prepare European electricity systems for the introduction of an increasing proportion of renewable energies.

My career plan is to continue working in the energy sector, while using and developing my skills in data science and AI to help this sector participate in the ecological transition of our societies.

Can you share a few words about life in Toulouse, and more particularly on campus?

Toulouse is an ideal location for students, with a wide range of activities available in the city (bars, restaurants, cinemas, museums, etc.) or nearby (the Pyrenees are just one hour away, the Mediterranean one and a half hours, and the Atlantic two hours).

The SUPAERO campus is perfectly sized and has a number of high-quality facilities, including a rugby pitch (this is the land of the oval ball!), a swimming pool, two gymnasiums, the student centre (with its foyer!) and the Aérothèque Marie Marvingt (where it was great to work and relax in the rest rooms with a good board game or puzzle). Finally, SUPAERO wouldn’t be SUPAERO without its rich and diverse student life, to which the half-day on Thursday afternoons is entirely dedicated.

Personally, I’ve been particularly involved in OSE, the institute’s social outreach association, by volunteering for weekly tutoring sessions for secondary school students in difficulty, as well as for popular science and career guidance events. For the first two years, I was involved in two technical clubs: the Cubesat club (through the TOLOSAT student nanosatellite project) and the S-cube (through the PERSEUS nanofuselage project in collaboration with CNES).

If you had any words for students taking the CCMP?

First of all, congratulations on your eligibility: it’s an important first step that you’ve just taken. Stay calm, composed and focused, and with just one more effort to make during the orals, you’ll have a great life ahead of you! Good luck in the final stretch 😉

What is your background?

After taking a scientific baccalauréat with a major in mathematics at the Lycée Notre-Dame in Chartres, I did two years of scientific preparatory classes at the Lycée Stanislas in Paris: MPSI in the 1st year, PSI in the 2nd year, before coming to ISAE-SUPAERO through the Mines-Ponts competitive entrance exam.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO? What do you see as the school's strengths?

Although I wasn’t a great enthusiast, the space sector still appealed to me! I was particularly attracted by the idea of pursuing a generalist education while working on concrete examples and application exercises in a specific field.

I hadn’t really thought about coming to this school and trying my hand in this field until I found out about ISAE-SUPAERO in my preparatory classes. But after two years of preparatory classes and rather theoretical courses, I found it particularly motivating to be able to project scientific knowledge into concrete applications, especially in this field with high environmental stakes.

The teaching in the first and second years remains broad and general, but the way it is applied and the way it is approached in class makes it all the more captivating. I particularly liked the courses in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, with the study of aerodynamic profiles as an example. Then there are the courses specific to ISAE-SUPAERO, aerospace and aeronautics, such as celestial mechanics and flight mechanics, which provide an even greater view of the field.

Finally, these years at ISAE-SUPAERO, enriched by my gap year, have enabled me to find my way. I’m going into a slightly different field: energy and hydrology. However, I still have a strong Earth observation component that I find particularly stimulating, and in which I have developed skills and a particular interest thanks to my time at the school.

The school has a number of assets that have helped to make the last four years very rewarding, both academically and personally: first of all, the small class size, with around 200 students in the first year. Secondly, its location in the south of France, in Toulouse. The school is also ideally located in Toulouse itself. Finally, it has a particularly rich community and sports life, with many clubs open to all.

The gap year, which is strongly encouraged, provides a great opportunity for openness. Personally, it helped me to find my way thanks to two placements in two different fields: one in research abroad, the other in a large company.

Can you tell us about your academic exchange? How was it a rewarding experience, both personally and academically?

I had the opportunity to do an academic placement at Luleå University of Technology, in the north of Sweden, at the gateway to Swedish Lapland. I took courses in fluid mechanics, CFD, and non-linear physics. But above all, I met some unforgettable people, improved my fluency in English, discovered Swedish culture, Nordic activities such as ice skating, saunas and cross-country skiing, and had a whole host of other unforgettable experiences. I have some excellent memories.

What areas and subjects have you chosen for the 3rd year? Why did you make this choice?

In my final year, I chose the EO (Earth Observation) stream as well as the ETE (Energy, Transport and Environment) stream, with a focus on energy and networks. I wanted to focus the end of my studies on environmental applications. This choice of specialisation came about naturally after my research placement in hydrology, focusing on the SWOT satellite mission.

What are your career plans?

I’m off to do my end-of-studies placement at EDF, working on hydrological forecasting for hydroelectric dam management. This placement is in line with my studies and my specialisations of the last few years, as I’ll be working on meteorological models and Earth observation data in the energy sector. If this placement confirms my interest in Earth observation and hydrology, I’d like to continue in this direction.

A word about life in Toulouse and more particularly on campus?

The community life and atmosphere at the engineering school have helped me to broaden my horizons socially and have given me a lot on a personal level. This spring of 2025 marks the end of my student years for me and I’m already nostalgic about the last 4 years spent alongside my class.

I’ll particularly remember my experiences as a member of the school’s student sports association, and as a member of RAID ISAE, a club that organises an annual sporting RAID open to all, in an idyllic location in the Occitanie region.

If you had any words for students taking the CCMP?

Don’t underestimate yourself during these competitive exams and be confident in yourself and your abilities. Finally, going on to engineering school, and to ISAE-SUPAERO, opens up an infinite range of possibilities. The hardest part will certainly be choosing from among all the options available to you!

What is your background?

I did a Bac S with an Engineering Sciences option at the Lycée Gustave Eiffel in Bordeaux. I did a PTSI/PT preparatory course at the same school.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO? What do you see as the school's strengths?

I’ve always been very interested in space, and the school has a great deal of expertise in this field, as demonstrated by the French astronauts who are alumni. I also appreciate the wide range of disciplines and the truly generalist teaching that is offered. Another guiding principle behind my choice was my desire to stay in the south-west of France for my studies. It’s a great place to live, I grew up there and I’m particularly fond of it.

Can you tell us about your academic exchange? How was it a rewarding experience, both personally and academically?

Firstly, I did my compulsory first year work placement in Tanzania for a 2-month humanitarian internship. I didn’t want to ‘waste’ this month doing a job that didn’t interest me and didn’t contribute anything either personally or to others. On the other hand, with friends from the year, we went to do manual work in schools, which for us had a strong and concrete meaning for those in need.

I spent a semester on exchange in Singapore at the National University of Singapore (NUS). I took a wide variety of courses to explore my different interests: future energy, medical technology, astrophysics, and marine biology. I chose this part of the world because I wanted to discover a new way of life and a culture I knew nothing about. It was also an opportunity to study at a prestigious university where academic excellence is recognised abroad. I love to travel and Singapore is a central location for visiting many countries in South-East Asia.

In the second part of my gap year, I did a second academic exchange at UNIS Svalbard in the Spitsbergen archipelago. For 6 months I studied the aurora borealis, a relatively unknown phenomenon that tells us a lot about the behaviour of our sun and its interaction with the earth. I also wanted to give time to another passion in my life: mountain sports, in particular ski touring.

At the end of this experience of life in the far north, a far cry from anything I’d known before, I worked for Ponant as an Arctic expedition guide for 2 months.

These different experiences allowed me to explore several academic disciplines in detail that I didn’t know about, such as bioengineering, astrophysics, and energy. In the end, this helped me decide on my final year specialisation. Personally, I’ve been able to travel on my own, get out of my comfort zone, and confront a variety of difficulties. I’ve also been able to fulfil dreams and desires that might otherwise have led to frustration in my future working life. I’m honestly very happy to have spent this year for myself, it’s by no means a free year to do nothing – quite the opposite, it’s a year in which you grow more than ever and which allows you to approach the final year of study with peace of mind.

What areas and subjects have you chosen for your 3rd year? Why did you make this choice?

For my final year, I chose the Earth Observation and Science of the Universe pathway (OTSU-SU) and the Design and Operation of Space Systems pathway (COS-TS). With the different courses that I took during my gap year, I chose to continue in what I’ve been passionate about for a long time, i.e. space. These two courses are the most space-oriented at SUPAERO.

What is your career plan? SFE?

I’d like to work in the design and innovation of current space systems such as propulsion on launchers, satellites, or interplanetary manned missions. I aspire to manage teams and projects. I’m going to do my end-of-study placement in Kourou at the Guiana Space Centre. I’m working with CNES on a study of the risk of in-flight lightning strikes on launchers.

A word about life in Toulouse, and more particularly on campus?

As I said earlier, the south-west is a region that I love to live in. The weather is good all year round. Overall: the people are friendly. The location is great, about 1 hours from the Pyrenees (by car or train) and about 2/3 hours from the sea or ocean.

The campus has good transportation links, despite the fact that it’s in the south, and the Canal du Midi is a very convenient major route. There is also a new metro line that will soon be operational. The campus is large, with a large number of sports facilities (rugby pitch, tennis court, basketball pool, etc.) and a student centre with spaces for artistic and technical clubs. As a general rule, community involvement is very much encouraged, and all students can join a wide variety of clubs, or several clubs if they wish, from the first year onwards. The whole campus is available to students so that they can enjoy it at their own pace and according to their own desires.

Meet Clémentine Lelarge

What is your background?

I began my career as a PCSI and then PSI preparatory student at the Lycée Les Lazaristes in Lyon, before taking the CCMP competitive entrance exam and coming to ISAE-SUPAERO. In the first year, I followed the school’s core curriculum, while doing a one-month work placement as an HR assistant in a bookshop. I was also very involved in community life, joining a number of clubs, including volleyball, the European Aerostudent Games (EAG), SUPAEROWING, and OSE ISAE-SUPAERO, an initiative aimed at raising awareness of science among secondary school pupils, particularly girls from priority education areas.

In my second year, I followed the school’s core curriculum and opted for a semester at SUPAERO (S4), where the courses were less science-focused and more oriented towards business, management, biology, and law. I did a three-month research placement at the Centre de Biologie Intégrative in Toulouse, where I worked on mathematical and computer modelling of biological processes to combat neurodegenerative diseases. As far as clubs are concerned, I continued my involvement in OSE ISAE-SUPAERO and was elected President of SUPAEROWING, as well as taking on the role of General Secretary of the school’s Gala.

For my third year, I opted for a double degree in entrepreneurship with the X-HEC Entrepreneurs Masters. I spent my first year at École Polytechnique, where I specialised in the science of environmental challenges, while taking the X entrepreneurship certificate. I also did a six-month placement with Biomemory, an innovative start-up specialising in data storage on DNA molecules to decarbonise data centres.

Finally, in my fourth year, my second year of the double degree took me to HEC Paris. It was a year focused on business creation, where I had the opportunity to work on some very concrete projects. I was also lucky enough to go on exchange to Singapore Management University and do a six-month placement with Shift4Good, a venture capital fund focused on decarbonising mobility.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO? In your opinion, what are the strengths of the school and its courses?

ISAE-SUPAERO is first and foremost a tight-knit, specialised, which means that you really get to know everyone and enjoy a very familial atmosphere. The scientific subjects are of a high standard, and the core curriculum offers a solid education that is not necessarily available in all engineering schools. The school also stands out for its rich community life. Not only can you take part in classic sports such as volleyball, but you can also obtain a parachuting licence, go skiing in the Pyrenees, or organise events such as rowing regattas. The clubs are a real school for leadership and project management, and the skills I acquired in these associations are of great value in my current professional life.

What’s more, the location in Toulouse is ideal, just 15 minutes by bike from the city centre, with a very pleasant climate. The possibility of doing double degrees, in both science and business, is another major advantage of the school, as is the recognition of diplomas internationally, such as the X-HEC Entrepreneurs master’s degree. Above all, ISAE-SUPAERO remains a school of excellence in the fields of aeronautics and aviation, with a network of passionate and extremely competent alumni.

I chose ISAE-SUPAERO because the school made me aware of the challenges of climate change and the importance of technological innovation in meeting them. My time at ISAE gave me a solid scientific base and opportunities to get involved in impact projects, particularly through entrepreneurship. The school is a real crossroads of passionate people, people ready to revolutionise the world for the better.

What is your current position? What does it involve?

I’ve just finished my end-of-studies placement at Shift4Good as a VC Analyst. After this experience, I decided to move away from the financing sector because I felt that it lacked a direct link with the reality on the ground. So I’m joining a high-impact deeptech start-up, where I’ll be taking on the role of Chief of Staff. This position will enable me to work directly with management to help the company grow both operationally and financially, particularly by raising funds. It’s a versatile, very hands-on role, and I’ll have the opportunity to work alongside the C-levels (CEO, etc.), which is an excellent opportunity to learn about leadership responsibilities.

Do you have any words for students taking the CCMP?

My advice would be not to focus solely on the ranking or the professional opportunities. It’s essential to think about your quality of life and the experience you’re going to have during these three years. These are great years, during which you’ll develop personal skills and have unforgettable experiences. Choose a school where you feel at home and where you can develop both personally and professionally. And above all, don’t forget that all roads lead to Rome if you’re motivated and ready to invest yourself!

What is your background?

I passed my baccalauréat in science with a maths major in 2019 at Lycée Stendhal in Grenoble. I then went to preparatory school at Lycée du Parc in Lyon in the PCSI stream, then PC and PC* in 5/2.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO? What do you think are the school's strengths?

I chose ISAE-SUPAERO because it’s a reputable general engineering school, with an aerospace component that interested me in particular for fluid mechanics and space mechanics.

I was also aware that a lot of double degrees were possible, particularly with Sciences Po.

I already knew that I wanted to make the ecological and social transition the core of my future career, and that it was possible to choose the ‘Energy, Transport, Environment’ specialisation in my final year. As well as all these educational aspects, I’d heard lots of positive feedback about Toulouse and campus life!

One of the school’s strong points is its specialisation for people with a particular interest in aeronautics and aerospace, while remaining a general engineering school, which means that people who are simply curious about these fields can flourish here. Other important assets are its student life, its geographical location, and the working environment on campus.

Can you tell us about your double degree with Science Po? Why did you make this choice?

I’m currently doing a double-diploma with Sciences Po Paris between the second and third years of the engineering course at SUPAERO. I’m doing a Masters in European Affairs with a specialisation in ‘Energy, Environment, Sustainability’. I chose to do this because it’s a great opportunity to look at energy and environmental issues from a public policy perspective. I learnt a lot about the economics and regulation of energy, how policies for the ecological transition are made, and how environmental issues are taken into account at several levels. I now know that I would like to participate in the ecological and social transition by working on energy markets or in Earth observation to monitor changes in our environment.

I did my semester abroad at the Technische Universität Berlin. There I was able to take courses in space mechanics, meteorology, water management, adaptation to climate change, and the circular economy with an engineering approach. It was a great experience to develop these subjects that interest me with a slightly different teaching approach. I was able to enjoy Berlin, its culture and the people I met – it’s a very pleasant city, especially in summer. I was able to discover other nearby cities as well as Prague and Copenhagen. It was a very enriching experience that reinforced my professional choices and plans.

What areas and subjects have you chosen for your third year, and why?

I chose the ‘Earth Observation’ field because I discovered during my studies at SUPAERO, my semester abroad in Berlin, and my coursework at Sciences Po that Earth observation satellite data are essential for monitoring changes in our environment and thinking about solutions (for example, for monitoring land artificialisation, flooding, or water resources). I chose the ‘Energy, Transport, Environment’ field because I’m very interested in energy issues, particularly energy markets, which I studied at Sciences Po, and because I’d like to contribute to protecting the environment.

What are your career plans?

I haven’t yet defined a precise career plan. One possibility would be to work in the public administration for the ecological transition (different departments of the ministry or state agencies), or in the energy markets. I’m also very interested in working as an Earth observation engineer and on scientific space missions. I think that the dual engineering profile of Supaero and Sciences Po is just the thing for working on these issues!

A word about life in Toulouse, and more particularly on campus?

Life in Toulouse is really very pleasant. I feel like I’ve seen a lot of sunshine, the campus is well located on the banks of the canal and you can take advantage of all the sports facilities! I’ve been able to enjoy the Pyrenees with the school’s mountaineering club, as well as rowing on the Garonne and cycling and running around Toulouse. It’s a great place for outdoor activities! I’ve also been able to get involved in various clubs on the subjects that are most important to me: SUPAERO For Earth (a student club that raises awareness of environmental issues), the school’s social outreach programme, and the student office’s solidarity and ecology section.

What if you had a word for students taking the CCMP?

Be confident, and take care of yourself during this period!
