Can you introduce yourself and tell us what motivated you to join this programme?

My name is Lucas Hunziker, I am a dual Swiss and American citizen. I am a rising senior at the University of Washington. I chose this programme because I want to study and work in the aerospace sector in Europe.

What was your favourite part of the programme?

My favourite course was on launcher architecture and propulsion at ESTACA in Paris. As a structural engineering major, I was particularly interested in the design stages and structural vibration nodes. Outside of the classroom, I had a great time at the Paris Air Show.

What advice would you give to future participants?

This programme offers a good balance between classes, company visits and free time to discover French culture.

How does this programme enrich your academic career and professional prospects?

I gained a valuable overview of master’s programmes and on how the industry works in France, and I’m leaving with a much greater interest in studying in Europe in the future.

Can you introduce yourself and explain why you chose this programme ?

My name is Hamzah Fawaz and I am a rising junior at the University of Michigan, majoring in Aerospace Engineering and minoring in nuclear engineering. I chose to participate in this programme to further my knowledge of aerospace in another country than my own. It was also an opportunity to expand my professional network, build meaningful connections, earn academic credits, and have an unforgettable experience.

What was your favourite part of the programme?

One of the most memorable parts of the programme was the heat transfer course, where we learned how to use a new software called SYSTEMA THERMICA. We designed a satellite and performed heat transfer simulations and calculations on it, which was both challenging and rewarding. Outside the classroom, there were countless incredible events, but the dinner cruise on the Seine stood out. It was truly magnificent.

What advice would you give to future participants?

Living in Paris, Toulouse and Poitiers during the programme was an incredible experience, but I would recommend making the most of your free time to explore Europe as much as possible, or setting aside a few days to discover other regions of France. Also, try to get to know the members of your group as soon as possible. You may be hesitant at first, but they could end up becoming some of your closest friends.

How does this summer programme enrich your academic career and professional prospects?

This programme has given me knowledge that I can reuse in my future studies. It has also strengthened my ability to connect with others while promoting my academic and professional development.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us what motivated you to join this programme?

My name is Erika Wood. I am a junior at the University of Washington studying aerospace engineering. I decided to join the Aerospace Summer Programme because I was looking for an international approach to aerospace engineering. This programme not only gave me the opportunity to discover a country I had never visited before, but also allowed to participate in an incredible programme where I could see aeronautics from a different perspective.

What was your most memorable experience from this programme?

Honestly, it was the meals and free time we had, when we were all together, kicking the ball around, laughing, having fun and chilling, playing cards. Those breaks between classes, when we all kind of came together as a group in community on the campus, meeting students and professors.

What advice would you give to future participants?

You will learn a lot of high-level aerospace engineering concepts and techniques. But this programme is also about culture. It’s about discovering France and getting to know your peers from all over the United States and the world. I don’t think it’s all just serious. There are lots of fun moments, lots of games, and lots of independence where you can decide where you want to go, what you want to see together as a team, or just on your own.

How does this programme enrich your academic path and career prospects?

I have definitely seen a different side of the aerospace industry than the one I saw in the United States. One thing that was really important to me was to have this international approach, and now I have it, thanks to this programme, which has allowed me to discover companies like Airbus, Aura Aero and many others here in France. I now have an idea of different academic paths I could pursue after obtaining my degree, as well as companies I could potentially work for outside the United States. I can pursue my path in so many different places – perhaps Europe will be my next stepping stone.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us what motivated you to join this programme?

I am Atenea Chávez, an aerospace engineering student at the University of Michigan. I joined the Aerospace Summer Programme in France to learn from the best institutions, explore the European aerospace scene, and discover a new culture while growing academically and personally.

What was your favourite moment during the programme?

My favourite memory was visiting the Pic du Midi Observatory in the Pyrenees. Being in the mountains, learning about space observation, and simply enjoying the view… It was surreal and unforgettable.

Stay open to everything, whether it’s a challenging course topic or an spontaneous group adventure. This programme offers a rare balance between hands-on learning and cultural discovery, so make the most of it.

Direct Numerical Simulation of Hydrogen Bubbles Cavitation (6 months)

The goal of this internship is to explore Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) in a cooperative setting. Instead of learning only from environment rewards, the agent’s policy will be shaped by a human partner’s feedback during collaboration. Specifically, the human teammate will be able to assign positive or negative rewards based on how helpful, efficient, or intuitive the agent’s actions feel during the joint task. The intern will investigate how such feedback influences learning stability, team performance, and perceived fluency.

CIME 2025: where science and adventure meet to explore extreme worlds

First Interdisciplinary Conference on Extreme Worlds at ISAE-SUPAERO: from hostile environments to collaborative research

In October 2025, ISAE-SUPAERO hosted the first edition of the Interdisciplinary Congress on Extreme Worlds (CIME), an event aimed at bringing together explorers, researchers and professionals around a common objective: to understand humans and technology in the face of the most hostile environments on the planet – and beyond.

Spearheaded by Vsevolod Peysakhovich (lecturer and researcher in human factors), Maëlis Lefebvre (postdoctoral researcher in human factors) and Safouane Hamdi (endocrinologist specialising in reproduction, Toulouse University Hospital), this conference is an initiative promoting an interdisciplinary approach to the study of extreme environments.

Experts share their challenges and knowledge

The CIME programme gave the floor to personalities whose unique experiences shed light on the scientific and technological challenges of extreme environments.

Gaëlle Giesen, a champion relative parachutist and scuba diver, calls for greater collaboration between science and extreme sport: “I’d like science to be involved in my disciplines to shed light on my physiology”.
Géraldine Parodi, a scuba diver – one of the most dangerous professions in the world – highlights the similarities between underwater and space exploration: “We can bring our experience to bear on joint innovations.

Alban Michon, polar explorer and founder of the School of Explorers, stresses the importance of passing on knowledge to train future generations.
Jessica Studer (Institute of Space Medicine and Physiology) presents the results of her research at the Concordia station in Antarctica, a unique laboratory for studying human behaviour in prolonged isolation.

Stephen Alamo, a specialist in space medicine (ESA), discusses the medical challenges of long-duration manned flights and the development of future missions to Mars. For Christian Clot (Human Adaptation Institute), who explores human adaptation to destabilising environments, from caves to deserts, to population migrations, “providing solutions to enable society to evolve can only be done if we have the capacity to understand humans and their social behaviour”.

Towards more collaborative and applied research

Extreme environments – space, the depths of the sea, polar zones, deserts, etc. – share common challenges: isolation, confinement, physiological risks, technological autonomy.

CIME has shown that bringing together researchers and operators in the field is essential for :

Directing research towards practical applications (medicine, engineering, training).
Nourish scientific reflection with unique feedback.
