Luca Parmitano, Artemis III astronaut: an ISAE-SUPAERO graduate at the heart of the next step in the return to the Moon

On June 9, 2026, NASA announced the crew for Artemis III, a key mission in the U.S. lunar program scheduled for 2027.

First European astronaut selected for an Artemis mission

Among the four astronauts selected is Luca Parmitano, a graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO’s IEVEX Specialised Master’s programme, who will serve as the mission’s pilot. This is a historic appointment for the European Space Agency (ESA), which is seeing one of its members join an Orion flight crew for the first time,and further demonstrates the contribution made by our Institute’s graduates to major international space exploration programmes.

The announcement was made at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston. Luca Parmitano will join Commander Randy Bresnik and mission specialists Frank Rubio and Andre Douglas aboard the Orion spacecraft.

Scheduled for 2027, Artemis III will be a decisive milestone in the Artemis programme. The mission aims to validate rendezvous and docking operations, as well as procedures associated with future lunar landers developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin, in Earth orbit. These technical demonstrations are essential for the preparation of future crewed lunar exploration missions.

By being appointed mission pilot, Luca Parmitano becomes the first ESA astronaut assigned to an Artemis mission. This selection marks a new stage in European participation in international lunar ambitions.

A benchmark in European space exploration

A former test pilot with the Italian Air Force, Luca Parmitano has been a member of the ESA astronaut corps since 2009. He has already completed two missions aboard the International Space Station (ISS), spending a total of 366 days in space.

During his career, he has carried out six spacewalks and commanded ISS Expedition 61, becoming the first Italian to hold this position. Artemis III will be his third spaceflight.

His appointment as pilot reflects the operational experience he has gained over more than a decade of space missions and confirms the confidence placed by partner agencies in European astronauts during the most critical phases of human space exploration.

ISAE-SUPAERO, a key player in the training of European astronauts

Luca Parmitano’s selection is part of a remarkable trend for our Institute.

Today, five ISAE-SUPAERO graduates hold positions of responsibility within the ESA astronaut corps.

Thomas Pesquet (class of 2001) has completed two missions aboard the ISS and remains one of the most iconic figures in European space exploration. Appointed CEO of Novospace in 2025, he remains a central figure in European human space exploration. He is set to fly as early as 2027 on a third mission aboard the private commercial PAM-6 mission, which he is expected to command.
Sophie Adenot (class of 2004), selected by the ESA in 2022, is currently on her first mission aboard the International Space Station, contributing to numerous international scientific programmes.
Arnaud Prost (class of 2017), an ESA reserve astronaut, is continuing his operational training whilst contributing to projects related to human exploration in extreme environments. In February 2026, he was selected to undertake a spaceflight in 2027 aboard Haven-1, the space station developed by the American start-up Vast: he will become the first French national to stay on a private commercial space station.
Anthéa Comellini (class of 2017 – PhD 2021), also an ESA reserve astronaut, is applying her expertise to the development of navigation and autonomy technologies that will play a central role in future space missions.

A leading role in space exploration

The fact that several ISAE-SUPAERO graduates are currently serving as European astronauts highlights our Institute’s unique position within the space sector.

Thanks to a range of courses covering all the major fields of aeronautics and space, its research activities and its close links with agencies and industry players in the sector, ISAE-SUPAERO has been helping to train the men and women who take part in the great scientific and technological adventures of their time for several decades.

With Luca Parmitano as part of the Artemis III crew, Sophie Adenot currently on mission aboard the ISS, and several graduates involved in future European crewed programmes, ISAE-SUPAERO is confirming its role in preparing the next generation of space explorers.

Sylvestre Maurice presents the SUPERCAM / Martian Exploration educational kit

The ‘SUPERCAM - Martian Exploration’ educational kit project was initiated by five partners: ISAE-SUPAERO, the Toulouse Academy, CNRS, CNES and Cité de l'espace. Under the guidance and supervision of astrophysicist Sylvestre Maurice, first-year students at ISAE-SUPAERO developed this educational tool to raise awareness of space exploration in classrooms, from sixth form to final year. This kit is available to middle and high school teachers and can be adapted to offer educational lessons related to this theme.

3 questions to Marie Delaroche, 3ᵉ year student and MDRS 293 crew commander

Since February 18, seven ISAE-SUPAERO engineering students have been living a simulated Martian life and carrying out experiments in collaboration with CNES and several research laboratories at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in UTAH (USA)! For the second time, the mission is led by a woman: Marie Delaroche, a passionate #spaceexplorer, who was already part of crew 275 departing in 2023. We asked her 3 questions to find out more about the challenges of this mission and her feelings as #flightcommander! Alongside her, three young women and three young men in their 2ᵉ year of #engineering studies have taken on the roles of astronomer, scientist, botanist, journalist, health worker and onboard engineer. They are all members of the Mars Club ISAE-SUPAERO, a student association for the popularization of science focused on the Red Planet and the missions dedicated to its exploration and study. They are currently experimenting with AI4U, the artificial intelligence that assists astronauts in their daily tasks (environmental measurements, voice recognition, emergency exercises). They are also conducting a science popularization experiment in collaboration with secondary school pupils. Inspired by the film The Martian, in which an astronaut grows potatoes on the Red Planet, the aim of this experiment is to compare plant growth in Martian soil with growth in terrestrial soil! ISAE-SUPAERO est un établissement d'enseignement supérieur axé sur la recherche et l'innovation, qui s'engage à concilier excellence scientifique, visibilité académique et proximité avec les objectifs industriels. Ses activités de recherche ont contribué à faire de l'école un leader international non seulement en termes de programme d'ingénierie aérospatiale, mais aussi de programmes de troisième cycle, notamment ses masters (MSc) et ses programmes de doctorat en sciences de l'ingénierie. C'est pourquoi de nombreux acteurs internationaux clés de la recherche rendent visite à leurs homologues de l'ISAE-SUPAERO. Nous avons rencontré Dan Sheeres, professeur émérite de l'université du Colorado et titulaire de la chaire A. Richard Seebass au département des sciences de l'ingénierie aérospatiale Ann et H.J. Smead de l'université du Colorado à Boulder. Les recherches de Dan Scheeres couvrent des sujets allant de l'astrodynamique et de la navigation spatiale à la science planétaire et à la mécanique céleste, et il a publié de nombreux articles dans ces domaines. L'astéroïde 8887 a été baptisé « Scheeres » en reconnaissance de ses contributions à la compréhension scientifique de l'environnement dynamique des astéroïdes. Pendant son séjour à l'ISAE-SUPAERO, le professeur Scheeres et l'équipe des systèmes spatiaux pour les applications planétaires ont collaboré à l'analyse des données DART et au développement de concepts visant à étudier la structure interne des astéroïdes lors de futures missions spatiales. Sophie Adenot is flying out on February 11th for a eight-month mission with Crew-12 on the ISS!

Today, the entire ISAE-SUPAERO community is coming together: students, staff, faculty, and alumni are showing their support for Sophie Adenot, European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut and ISAE-SUPAERO alumna, as she embarks on a eight-month mission to the ISS. Sophie is the second French woman, 30 years after Claudie Haigneré, to fly on a long-duration mission. On the ISS, she will conduct around 200 scientific experiments, including 10 French experiments, covering fields such as medicine and materials physics. Have a good flight, Sophie. The sound of a Martian dust devil captured by the SuperCam microphone on Perseverance

This video and audio show the results obtained by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover and its SuperCam microphone when recording the sounds of a Martian dust devil passing overhead on 27 September 2021, the 215th Martian day or sol of the mission. The dust devil was 25 metres wide and at least 118 metres high, moving at a speed of approximately 19 km/h. This is the first time such a recording has been made, as capturing a dust devil requires a bit of luck. Indeed, it flew over the rover at a time when all of Perseverance's sensors measuring wind, pressure, temperature and dust, plus the NavigationXXX (Navcam) camera, were running. This allowed scientists to combine sounds, images and atmospheric data. The unique combination of this data, along with atmospheric modelling, enabled researchers to estimate the dimensions of the dust devil. Scientists cannot accurately predict when these vortices will occur. Rovers such as Perseverance and Curiosity monitor them regularly. When scientists notice that they are more frequent at a certain time of day or approaching from a certain direction, they focus their monitoring to try to capture a dust devil with all the sensors at their disposal. > To better understand the video, it shows three rows of images: - the row

Historical Discovery: Mercury Does Indeed Have Electron Radiation Belts

An international team of researchers, including a scientist from ISAE-SUPAERO, has just published a study in the journal "Nature Astronomy" revealing the existence of electron radiation belts around Mercury. This discovery, based on an analysis of data from the MESSENGER mission and supported by previously unpublished observations from the BepiColombo mission’s MEA (Mercury Electron Analyzer) instrument, sheds new light on the physics of planetary magnetospheres and raises major challenges for the protection of space missions.

Meteorite impact reveals new insights into Mars

In September 2021, NASA's InSight mission recorded a meteorite impact. Analysis of the data by scientists has revolutionised our understanding of the internal structure of Mars and its evolution. Its mantle is not homogeneous, as previously assumed, but composed of a layer of molten silicates overlying the core. Fighter pilot and reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), Arnaud Prost returned to his former school on Thursday March 28 to meet 200 secondary school students as part of the ISAE SUPAERO OSE program. It was an opportunity for him to recall the “great memories” of his student experience at ISAE-SUPAERO, his long-standing commitment to the student social outreach program and the “Aquanauts” scheme he set up with OSE l'ISAE-SUPAERO. And in passing, he offers a few words of advice to young people who might dream of following in his footsteps: “Don't let yourself be convinced that one of these paths isn't for you!” A 2017 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Arnaud Prost is among those selected for the ESA Astronaut Class of 2022, alongside Sophie Adenot and Anthea Comellini, both also alumni of the school. They join other illustrious ESA astronauts who have already studied at the school: Thomas Pesquet, Luca Parmitano and Samantha Cristoforetti. Since 1970, ISAE-SUPAERO has contributed to the progress of the space age through its training, research and innovation activities. As the only organization in France to offer degree courses (engineering, master's, specialized master's, doctorate) covering all 22 space-related themes identified by CNES, the Institute offers a royal road to space careers. Co-founder of the startup Viraj H2, created during his 3ᵉ year of engineering studies, Joseph Risson wants to contribute his expertise to the decarbonization of air travel by exploring a new hydrogen propulsion architecture! Joseph and his partner, Paul de Goÿs, were awarded the €1 million Lopez-Loreta Foundation prize in 2023 to continue their research into this innovative propulsion method, and now benefit from the support and expertise of InnovSpace, the school's official incubator, where the startup is currently housed. Artery In Microgravity (#AIM), the first student scientific experiment designed and developed in collaboration since 2018 by ISAE-SUPAERO and Polytechnique Turin, was launched on 23 November 2022 by Space X's Dragon cargo ship to the International Space Station (ISS)! Selected by the ESA as part of its ‘Orbit your thesis’ programme, AIM aims to study the behaviour of the heart and its arteries in space, in order to determine whether people with heart problems will one day be able to stay there.

ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space organize an international training course on space systems

Twenty engineers from the Peruvian space agency CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) attended a training course in Toulouse designed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space! The aim? To develop their skills in space systems and space missions. The entire program was placed under the academic responsibility of AnnaFederica Urbano, a lecturer and researcher in space systems and launchers at ISAE-SUPAERO. The engineers took part in a preliminary satellite design project. At the end of the five-week course, they all obtained the Certificate of Advanced Studies awarded by ISAE-SUPAERO. For ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space, this experience opens up prospects for future collaborations in training courses of this type for international customers and industrial and institutional partners. FRENCH SUPERCAM INSTRUMENT RECORDING THE SOUND OF INGENUITY'S 4th FLIGHT

Located 80 meters from the rover at the moment of take-off, the small helicopter rose to 5 meters above the ground before covering a distance of 133 meters before returning to land where it had taken off from. SuperCam's scientific microphone, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO, recorded the sound emitted by the rotation of the Martian drone's blades during its flight. This sound has a characteristic frequency of 84 Hz, equivalent to the low “E” of a piano or the bass voice of a human being. “This is a big surprise for the whole scientific team,” says Naomi Murdoch, a researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO who is studying the data from the microphone. "Tests carried out in a Martian atmosphere simulator to design this instrument, and our theories of sound propagation, indicated that the microphone would have great difficulty picking up the sounds of the helicopter. Indeed, Mars' thin atmosphere strongly attenuates sound transmission. We needed a bit of luck to record the helicopter from such a distance. We're very pleased to have succeeded in obtaining this recording, which is proving to be a goldmine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere". Developed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and a consortium of CNRS laboratories and its partners, coordinated by CNES, SuperCam's microphone is derived from a consumer model adapted to withstand the Martian environment. It pursues 3 substantial scientific and technical objectives of the Mars 2020 mission: Study the sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks, to gain a better understanding of their mechanical properties. Improving our understanding of atmospheric phenomena (wind turbulence, dust eddies, wind interactions with the rover, and now with the helicopter). Understanding the sound signature of the rover's various movements (robotic arm and mast operations, driving on normal or uneven ground, pump monitoring, etc.). The microphone was first switched on a few hours after Perseverance landed. It recorded the first Martian sounds generated by turbulence in the atmosphere. It is used daily in conjunction with laser rock ablation for chemical analysis of Mars. ABOUT THE MARS 2020 MISSION: NASA is relying on Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the development of the Mars 2020 mission. SuperCam was developed jointly by LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA) and a consortium of laboratories attached to the CNRS, French universities and research establishments. Several Spanish universities, led by the University of Valladolid, are also contributing to the instrument. CNES is responsible to NASA for the French contribution to SuperCam. The instrument is operated alternately from LANL and the French Operations Center for Science and Exploration (FOCSE) at CNES in Toulouse.

A national programme to train the space industry’s future talent

COMETES – Skills and Careers for Space is a national training programme launched to meet the growing needs of the French space sector. As the winner of the ‘Skills and Professions of the Future’ call for expressions of interest under the France 2030 plan, it brings together 26 partners from five French regions, including ISAE-SUPAERO.

The programme is based on a collaborative approach involving higher education institutions, research centres, industry players, local authorities and training organisations.

COMETES aims in particular to:

train 11,000 students over five years
create new degree programmes
develop innovative training programmes addressing space sector challenges
raise widespread awareness of careers and opportunities in the sector

A platform dedicated to careers and skills in the space sector

The COMETES website has been designed as a platform for exploring and learning about careers in the space industry and the skills of the future.

In particular, users can:

gain a better understanding of developments in the sector
find out about the skills in demand

The programme also pays particular attention to sustainable space issues, new space technologies, nanosatellites, space data and systems engineering.

Control of wingtip vortices via inhomogeneous jet injection

This experimental project aims to investigate the control of wingtip vortices through the injection of variable-density jets into the vortex core, with the objective of accelerating their destabilisation and decay. This approach is motivated by the significant applied relevance of such vortices, which contribute to the formation of condensation trails in aircraft wakes and, consequently, to aviation-induced radiative forcing. The primary diagnostic technique employed is time-resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), enabling precise quantification of the vortex dynamical response to the induced perturbations. The project builds upon recent numerical findings from the research group, which demonstrated considerable transient growth potential in variable-density vortices, as well as preliminary experimental measurements already successfully carried out on the department’s test bench.

During a ministerial visit to Toulouse on Friday, June 5, 2026, ISAE-SUPAERO had the privilege of welcoming Mr. Philippe Baptiste, Minister of Higher Education, Research, and Space. This official visit led to high-level discussions on the institution’s priorities: aerospace engineering education, scientific excellence, national innovation, and student diversity.

A look back at the highlights of this segment

Welcomed by our Chief Executive, Chief Engineer Ms Baroux, the Minister was able to discuss the Institute’s strategic priorities. The meeting was further enriched by the presence of members of his cabinet and our key institutional and regional partners:

Ms Barbara Ballavoisne, Sub-Prefect and Deputy Secretary-General of the Haute-Garonne Prefecture;
Ms Nadia Pellefigue, Vice-President of the Occitanie Region responsible for Higher Education, Research, European Affairs and International Relations;
Ms Carole Drucker-Godard, Rector of the Occitanie Academic Region;
Ms Véronique Dominguez-Guillaume, Deputy Rector for Higher Education, Research and Innovation;
Ms Isabelle Ferrer, Executive Councillor responsible for relations with universities, representing Mr Jean-Luc Moudenc.

The delegation learned about our entrepreneurship support programme at InnovSpace, our facility dedicated to supporting prototyping, creativity and disruptive entrepreneurship. Following a tour of the facilities available to our community, the Minister spoke with the founders of two deep-tech start-ups from our ecosystem: Viraj Aero and Alpha Impulsion, founded by Joseph Risson and Martin Gros.

The visit concluded with a convivial and sharing experience over lunch, celebrating the diversity of talent amongst our key players:

Students with outstanding academic records: the class representative for the Master of Aerospace Engineering, a future Weapons Systems and Technology Engineer (IETA), the President of our Junior Enterprise (on a Sciences Po / ISAE-SUPAERO dual degree), as well as a first-year general engineering student involved in our ISAE-SUPAERO OSE equal opportunities programme.
Our young female researchers: PhD and post-doctoral students specialising in Artificial Intelligence and sustainable aviation.
Our female and male research lecturers who promote aerospace science on the international stage. The teams were able to demonstrate the impact of our cutting-edge work, particularly through our advances in space systems, planetary defence, space propulsion and neuroergonomics (analysis of human factors and mental workload in extreme environments).

A big thank you to the Minister, his office and all the institutional decision-makers for their active engagement and continued support for our mission: to train the best talent for a sovereign and sustainable future!

Today, we are making two documents of rare historical value available to our entire community: those eligible for entrance exams, students, alumni, former students and enthusiasts of the history of aeronautics.

Marc Pélegrin, a visionary engineer

A biography to understand a founder

Written by Jean-Claude Ripoll, General Engineer of Armaments and honorary member of the Air and Space Academy, who was a student of Marc Pélegrin in 1960 and later became director of ENSAE (SUPAERO) in 1991, this biography of Marc Pélegrin traces the career of a visionary engineer whose influence left a profound mark on the school and, beyond that, on the aerospace landscape in Toulouse and at ONERA. Through this detailed and rigorous portrait, an entire era comes into focus: one in which France was decentralising and patiently building its technical and scientific excellence in the field of aeronautics and space.

A film to witness history being made

How did SUPAERO establish itself in Toulouse? What role did Marc Pélegrin play in this formative period? A documentary film answers these questions with a deeply personal and family-oriented perspective: directed by Michel Pélegrin, Marc’s son, and enriched by the journalistic insight of Dominique Louise Pélegrin, his daughter, this filmed account is both a historical document and a family tribute. A unique way of seeing the school’s history through the eyes of those who experienced it from the inside.

Their generosity allows everyone to reconnect with the school’s roots.

A destiny shaped between MIT and Toulouse

There are figures whose names eventually become part of the city’s fabric. Since July 2024, an avenue named after Marc Pélegrin has run alongside the ONERA and ISAE-SUPAERO campuses in Toulouse. A tribute etched into the city for a man who literally anchored the school in its local area.

A graduate of the École Polytechnique (class of 1943) and SUPAERO in 1949, Marc Pélegrin understood before many others what would be the strength of the engineering grandes écoles of the future: the inseparable link between teaching and research. He had discovered the model at MIT, where he had the opportunity to further his studies between 1949 and 1950. On his return to France, he founded CERA in 1958—the first research centre in control systems affiliated with a grande école—and then, from 1964, the relocation of the École nationale supérieure de l’Aéronautique to Toulouse, making the inclusion of a research centre specific to the school an essential condition. This demand — deemed bold, even provocative in Paris — earned him the task of leading this historic mission. He became director of the school in September 1969, and simultaneously administrator of the CERT (Centre d’études et de recherches de Toulouse), an entity created in conjunction with ONERA to guarantee the scientific freedom of research.

What is now known as ISAE-SUPAERO, with its world-renowned research laboratories and its roots in the heart of Europe’s aerospace capital, bears the deep imprint of his vision.

Marc Pélegrin passed away on 1 January 2024, as he was entering his 101st year.

These archives are an invaluable treasure for our community. Understanding the history of ISAE-SUPAERO means understanding why we train the engineers and researchers of tomorrow to the high standards that define us. Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your academic background?

I’m a young man with a passion for aeronautics, which led me, after my A-levels, to enrol in science-focused preparatory classes. Following these preparatory classes, I continued my studies at an aeronautical engineering school at the Private University of Marrakech. After obtaining my degree in aeronautical engineering, I decided to pursue a Specialised Master’s in Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Management at ISAE-SUPAERO, which I am currently completing.

How did you hear about UNIVERSEH, and what made you want to find out more about it?

Under what scheme did you take part in the exchange programme?

What impact did this Summer School in Rome have on your career plans in relation to your studies?

I first heard about UNIVERSEH at ISAE-SUPAERO. What interests me is the very concept behind this university: bringing together different stakeholders, students and disciplines around the theme ofspace!

I took part in the ‘Startech 2025 Summer School – Space Entrepreneurship:fromBusinessIdeas to Start-Ups’programme , organised as part of UNIVERSEH in Rome. The aim was to provide participants, over the course of a week, with the skills and network needed to set up start-ups in the space sector.

I’m studying start-up creation, particularly in the aerospace sector. Taking part in this programme has been a real springboard for me and has broadened my horizons regarding several high-potential space markets.

What were the highlights of your stay in Rome?

How has UNIVERSEH helped you gain a better understanding of the challenges facing the space sector?

I was particularly impressed by the various talks. They covered every aspect of space and showed how to take a simple idea and turn it into a tangible product or project.

First and foremost, thanks to the calibre of the speakers, but also to the various projects carried out by the different groups, which werehighly innovativestart-upprojects.

UNIVERSEH, European Space University for Earth and Humanity

The alliance’s members aim toestablish a thematic European university dedicated to space in all its aspects (science, engineering, economics, social sciences and humanities, patents and innovation, entrepreneurship, science and medicine, art and culture, etc.). The alliance’s activities are wide-ranging and cover all aspects of university work, from the creation of interdisciplinary teaching programmes and courses to the dissemination of knowledge to civil society, including the development of research activities. Through its activities, the alliance also contributes to promoting the values of the European Union, such as inclusion, diversity and sustainability.

The creation of UNIVERSEH

Established in 2020 by five partners and coordinated by the Toulouse Community of Universities and Institutions (ComueDe Toulouse), the consortium now comprises seven partners acrossEurope. ISAE-SUPAERO has been a member of the alliance since its inception.

Education and pedagogical innovation

The alliance aims to develop a high-quality, competitive and interdisciplinary educational programme through new and innovative teaching approaches.

Since 2020, more than thirty interdisciplinary coursesandshort programmeshave been created, covering all disciplinary fields within the space sector. This catalogue is updated annually with the introduction of new courses; these courses are free of charge and accessible via the UNIVERSEH Moodle platformto students at the alliance’s member institutions.

Alliance members are also working on other types of programmes: short courses (summer schools, winter schools), training for PhD students, and lifelong learning.

Initiatives are also being put in place to strengthen students’ language and soft skills, through, for example, language cafés or talks on intercultural understanding….

One of UNIVERSEH’s objectives is to develop new teaching approaches and integrate them into the alliance’s various programmes and courses.

Among the major initiatives is the creation of micro-learning modules, known as ADN (Aerospace Digital Nuggets), which are made available on the MLearn digital platform.

ISAE-SUPAERO, through its IDEA team, plays a central role in this project.

The institution also makes a significant contribution to the development of the IREAL platform, which is dedicated to the digitisation and virtualisation of scientific experiments.

As part of the courses and training programmes organised within the alliance, students have several opportunities to undertake mobility placementsat one of the consortium’s member universities through various types of mobility schemes: short programmes (summer school, winter school, space analogue missions, etc.), long-term study placements at one of the alliance’s partner institutions, and participation in international conferences (International Astronautical Congress, European Student Assembly, Paris Air Show).

The alliance’s member institutions also promote mobility activities to enable staff to undertake training by participating in themed ‘staff weeks’ or through exchanges focused on sharing best practice.

Student involvement

As an alliance of European universities, UNIVERSEH attaches great importance to student engagement.

This can take various forms: organising talks with professionals and researchers, visiting partner companies and laboratories within the alliance, organising hackathons, representing the alliance at space fairs and conferences, and promoting science and space to the wider public.

There is also a European ‘Student Council’, comprising three students from each university, which coordinates student activities. It enables students to participate in decision-making and to influence initiatives relating to their education and future careers.

In Toulouse, members of the student club organise a range of activities each year, such as talks and initiatives to promote science.

At the heart of the European space ecosystem

UNIVERSEH’s activities are not disconnected from the space sector. On the contrary, the alliance’s members work in collaboration with all European stakeholders in this sector.This ensures that the alliance’s activities are able to meet the needs of businesses, particularly in terms of training.

Furthermore, more than 90 associate partners, also known as ‘stakeholders’, are involved. These include academic institutions, European and national space agencies, industrial firms and start-ups, as well as research laboratories, space sector networks and associations…

These stakeholders have expressed their support for the alliance and are invited to take part in its activities. In particular, they can help develop courses, speak at conferences on space-related topics, take part in networking events with students, offer work placements or get involved in mentoring. They also have their own governing body, the Advisory Board, whose role is to make recommendations on the alliance’s activities.

Towards a more operation-centric approach to aircraft design

Thesis

The thesis is proposed in the framework of the EA²GLE Graduate school related to the electrification of Aircraft and Automobiles and is co-funded by the AMI CMA PEGASE and the Occitanie Region.

The research activities aim to develop design methodologies for low-carbon aviation by addressing the challenges of incorporating operational constraints, failure scenarios, and multi-mission requirements into the optimisation process. The developed methodologies will be applied to the design of architectures of more electric aircraft in the category CS23.

The outcomes of the thesis will enable aircraft manufacturers to design safer, more efficient and more environmentally sustainable aircraft, while reducing design risks, development costs, and time to market.

This thesis will be organized based on several well-defined research axes which will structure the project:

Axis 1 (Month 1 to 6): this axis will focus on proposing a ConOps for aircraft in the General Aviation segment (which will be the scope of this thesis) and more specifically for larger aircraft specified under CS-23. This will be done thanks to a review of current aircraft in this category, not only including missions but also geographical profiles, and will also include a review of design constraints for propulsive and non-propulsive systems.
Axis 2 (Month 7 to16): this axis will aim at improving the models in the FAST-OAD-CS23-HE framework which is developed to assess Hybrid Electric aircraft of category CS23. It will include the proposition of models for the sizing of non-propulsive systems on General Aviation aircraft and their impact on the sizing of propulsive systems (which therefore requires higher fidelity modeling on thermal machines). Additional work on the impacts of usage of thermal machines and batteries on their respective lifespan and performances is also expected.
Axis 3 (Month 17 to 24): this axis will focus on the methodological aspect of deploying multi- mission optimization in an OAD framework. In particular, tradeoffs between different objective functions such as costs or environmental impacts will be investigated. The use of a simplified test case is proposed for this axis.
Axis 4 (Month 25 to 30): this axis will further develop the work done in the previous months with a specific application to the TBM900 family and will investigate the possibility and viability of electrifying propulsive and non-propulsive functions.
Month 31 to 36 will be dedicated to the redaction of the manuscript and preparation of the defense.

This work is expected to lead to the publication of at least 1 scientific article in a top-tier journal and at least two international conferences.

Three ISAE-SUPAERO alumni in space

The French President today announced the signing of an agreement with Vast, the company developing the first commercial space station, to fly two French astronauts: Thomas Pesquet and Arnaud Prost.

A third flight for Thomas Pesquet

Thomas Pesquet (alumnus S2004), who has already spent two periods on board the International Space Station (ISS) and holds the European record for the most time spent in space, has been chosen to command the PAM-6 mission to the ISS.

If his nomination is approved by the station’s international partners(NASA, ESA, Roscosmos, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency ( JAXA ) and the Canadian Space Agency ( CSA)), he will become the first non-American astronaut to command an American capsule on a mission to the ISS.

Arnaud Prost's maiden flight

For his part, Arnaud Prost (S2017 alumnus) will be making his very first space flight aboard Haven-1, the commercial space station developed by Vast. This mission will be a world first for a European astronaut, as it will be the first manned flight to a private space station.

Arnaud Prost has been a reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency since 2022, and is a test pilot and officer in the French Air Force and Space Agency. He is expected to take on the role of flight test engineer.

Based in Long Beach, California, and with more than 1,000 employees, the American company Vast has set up the infrastructure needed to manufacture and operate a commercial space station, Haven-1. The company plans to develop future habitats and systems for the Moon and Mars, space stations for government partners and other manned systems.

Planned to last around two weeks each, these missions will be devoted to scientific, educational and technology demonstration activities. They come at a time of transformation in the space sector, as the ISS nears the end of its operational life (due to be deorbited from 203) and several commercial stations are under development.

This announcement also confirms France’s leading position in the field of manned spaceflight. With Thomas Pesquet, Sophie Adenot (S2008 alumni) and now Arnaud Prost, France is the only European country with three active astronauts.

This momentum illustrates the vitality of the French space ecosystem and the major role played by educational establishments like ISAE-SUPAERO in preparing the space talents of tomorrow.
