Mattéo Gouzien: itinerary of an award-winning engineer and PhD student committed to decarbonized aviation!

Mattéo Gouzien, a graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO and currently a doctoral student at IMS Bordeaux and ONERA, has been passionate about science from an early age. His remarkable academic and personal career has been guided by a relentless desire for knowledge and a quest for meaning. Winner of the SEE's André Blanc-Lapierre national prize and of the PEGASUS 2025 student conference, Mattéo talks about his rich career path: from preparatory school to his thesis on reducing aviation emissions.

Passionate about science since childhood

Mattéo, who grew up in Lorient, where his passion for science was born: ” I ‘ ve had a passion for science ever since I was a little boy,” he confides. Choosing to do a BAC SSI was ” an obvious choice and an opportunity to take my passion a little further “. His academic career then took another turn, when he was admitted to the Ginette preparatory school (Lycée Sainte-Geneviève), following an application he had made ” without really believing in it “, he admits.

These two years of preparatory classes were a real challenge for him: “I was faced with a difficulty that was quite unprecedented for me. But, buoyed by the spirit of the class and the mutual support between students, I was able to enjoy those years”.

“ The discovery of new disciplines, approached in a very rigorous way, was an essential part of those years “, he adds. He remembers being amazed to unravel the equations explaining how a microwave works, or to discover the Venturi effect.

ISAE-SUPAERO: living your passion

At the end of his two years of preparatory classes and fascinated by the world of aerospace, Mattéo chose ISAE-SUPAERO, attracted by its technical side, its team spirit and its sporting activities (surfing, mountaineering, parachuting): “his preferred choice”, he stresses.

” At ISAE-SUPAERO, my passion for science only grew,” he says. ” I didn’t know where to turn, between fluid mechanics, signal processing, structural dynamics and applied maths. It was there that I finally understood what all those obscure prep school theorems were for – it was a revelation for me.

A gap year rich in knowledge and adventure

In the middle of his second year on the general engineering course at ISAE-SUPAERO, Mattéo began his gap year in two parts, “after three years with his head in the handlebars, to find out in practical terms how the theoretical knowledge he had acquired was being applied “.

He began with a 6-month placement at DGA TA in the Fleet Monitoring department. ” The idea of my placement was to use artificial intelligence algorithms to predict the damage suffered by Mirages 2000 during different flight sequences, and to understand how this damage affected the aircraft’s lifespan “.

Mattéo then went on an academic exchange to Toronto, where he was able to explore new scientific subjects such as robotics, structural dynamics in civil engineering and artificial intelligence, as well as discovering the country. ” I was also able to venture out, during the roaring of the caribou, into vast landscapes that were completely untouched by man ,” he explains.

A trip to South America before returning... by sailboat!

For the remaining six months of his gap year, Mattéo chose to go travelling in South America: ” I think that during these years, travelling, discovering and meeting new people are excellent ways of growing internally, taking a step back and, above all, confronting our way of thinking with reality.

It was an opportunity for him to let himself be carried along by the unexpected, between trekking at high altitude, cycling in the Andes and surfing on the Pacific coast, mostly on his own, “at first with only a rudimentary knowledge of Spanish “.

When it came time to return to France, and considering that his carbon footprint had already been greatly exceeded for his first Atlantic crossing, Mattéo chose to return by sailboat to Lorient.

” I’ve managed to find a sailboat so that I can return to port with three other sailors, heading for Lorient. Here I am, on a voyage lasting more than a month, buffeted by the waves, cut off from the world, in the middle of the ocean“.

It was a hugely formative experience for him, leading him to ” question the notions of progress and the race for profit, and to criticise our Western lifestyle where everything moves at 100 km/h!

A natural choice in^3rd year: “simulations of complex systems” and “signals and systems”.

Back at ISAE-SUPAERO for his 3rdᵉ year, it was natural for Mattéo to choose the “signals and systems” field of expertise and the “simulations of complex systems” field of application.

” It was a natural choice for me. Digital simulation and automatic control are at the crossroads of most of the engineering fields I’m passionate about, ” confides Mattéo.

An award-winning end-of-studies internship

His end-of-studies internship, carried out between ONERA and ISAE-SUPAERO, was a great success.

Mattéo won the regional and then the national André Blanc-Lapierre prize from the SEE for his work on data-based structured identification of the 2D Maxwell equations as a port-Hamiltonian system. His internship also enabled him to take part in the PEGASUS student conference, where he came second. This work also led to participation in an international conference and the publication of a journal article in the COMPEL journal (‘Port-Hamiltonian reduced order modelling of the 2D Maxwell equations’).

Under the supervision of Charles Poussot-Vassal (ONERA) and Denis Matignon (ISAE-SUPAERO), this internship enabled him to discover two fascinating theories: Hamiltonian port systems and the Loewner framework, applied to the 2D Maxwell equations.

” In aerospace engineering, solving Maxwell’s equations is essential for the design and analysis of numerous systems such as antennas, radars and the design of stealth technologies. However, these equations often result in very large models. The calculation time required to solve these systems can be very long (sometimes up to several months of simulation). These models are therefore unusable for iterative design processes.

Model reduction offers a solution for simplifying their complexity while retaining their critical characteristics. To illustrate the capabilities of the method used, the figure shows a snapshot of the results of the time simulations (of the magnetic field H and the electric field E) of the full-order model (FOM) compared with the reduced model, which is 13 times smaller and 100 times faster,” explains Mattéo.

Mattéo was then selected by ISAE-SUPAERO to take part in the PEGASUS student conference, held this year in Prague. This annual event brings together students from Europe’s leading aerospace schools. It was an opportunity for him to meet many students from all over Europe, giving rise to extremely enriching exchanges, both on a scientific and social level.

The conference also included a student competition, based on the evaluation of submitted scientific papers and oral presentations.

Mattéo came second, again in recognition of the work he had carried out during his final year internship.

The award was doubly well deserved, as Mattéo decided to make the return journey from Prague by bike, just as he did when he crossed the Atlantic in a sailing boat!

” Always with a view to reducing my carbon footprint, and given the price of the outward train ticket, I decided to make the return journey by bike. I’d also like to thank the Alumni Association for the grant they awarded me to finance the outward journey.

A thesis to reduce emissions from the aviation sector

A recent graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Mattéo has started a thesis between IMS in Bordeaux and ONERA in Toulouse on fault-tolerant active control of the flutter phenomenon.

” The aim is to design commercial aircraft with high aspect ratios in order to reduce fuel consumption and hence carbon emissions in the aviation sector “, he explains.

Mattéo sees this thesis as a new personal challenge, a way of “questioning the differences in expectations and opinions that sometimes arise between the worlds of research and industry”.

Feedback: a Latecoere engineer in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories

To strengthen the links between industry and research, more than 10 industrial R&D engineers have been made available to ISAE-SUPAERO as part of the France Relance plan! Cyril Geneste, research engineer at Latecoere, is one of them. Together with Miguel Charlotte, Associate Professor at the Institute, he looks back on this fruitful two-year collaboration. Their work, carried out in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories, focused on the behavior of aircraft door seals, which ensure cabin airtightness. Thanks to the Institute's cutting-edge equipment and academic expertise, Cyril Geneste was able in particular to carry out numerical modeling of seals in order to test their behavior. Students in their 3rdᵉ year of engineering studies were also involved in this work.

From classroom to cockpit: flying activities at ISAE-SUPAERO

Take a video tour of the school's Lasbordes Air Operations Center (COAL). With a fleet of 9 light aircraft, the COAL offers 3 types of activities: - Pilot training to obtain the Private Pilot's License (PPL), which enables students to fly single-engine aircraft. - Practical work directly linked to the school's teaching programs, from flight mechanics to an introduction to flight test techniques for continuing education. - Research into human factors and pilot cognitive mechanisms in real time during flight. At ISAE-SUPAERO, engineering and Master's students are lucky enough to be able to take their pilot's license just a few kilometers from the campus. Several instructors accompany them and train them to fly. All are members of the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Operation Research Department, headed by Valérie Budinger.

Meeting with Joseph Risson, engineering student and winner of a scholarship for his Viraj H2 project

On Friday, 8 December, the Swiss Jean-Jacques and Felicia Lopez-Loreta Foundation for Academic Excellence awarded a prize to Viraj H2, a project developed at ISAE-SUPAERO. Joseph Risson, a third-year engineering student, is studying a hybridisation between a hydrogen turboprop engine and a fuel cell in order to accelerate the decarbonisation of air transport. The €1 million grant will enable Joseph and his partner Paul de Goÿs to validate the technology behind their innovation.

Arnaud Prost, ESA reserve astronaut and ISAE-SUPAERO alumnus: “I was incredibly lucky to be here”

Fighter pilot and reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), Arnaud Prost returned to his former school on Thursday March 28 to meet 200 secondary school students as part of the ISAE SUPAERO OSE program. It was an opportunity for him to recall the “great memories” of his student experience at ISAE-SUPAERO, his long-standing commitment to the student social outreach program and the “Aquanauts” scheme he set up with OSE l'ISAE-SUPAERO. And in passing, he offers a few words of advice to young people who might dream of following in his footsteps: “Don't let yourself be convinced that one of these paths isn't for you!” A 2017 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Arnaud Prost is among those selected for the ESA Astronaut Class of 2022, alongside Sophie Adenot and Anthea Comellini, both also alumni of the school. They join other illustrious ESA astronauts who have already studied at the school: Thomas Pesquet, Luca Parmitano and Samantha Cristoforetti. Since 1970, ISAE-SUPAERO has contributed to the progress of the space age through its training, research and innovation activities. As the only organization in France to offer degree courses (engineering, master's, specialized master's, doctorate) covering all 22 space-related themes identified by CNES, the Institute offers a royal road to space careers. 3 questions to Marie Delaroche, 3ᵉ year student and MDRS 293 crew commander

Since February 18, seven ISAE-SUPAERO engineering students have been living a simulated Martian life and carrying out experiments in collaboration with CNES and several research laboratories at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in UTAH (USA)! For the second time, the mission is led by a woman: Marie Delaroche, a passionate #spaceexplorer, who was already part of crew 275 departing in 2023. We asked her 3 questions to find out more about the challenges of this mission and her feelings as #flightcommander! Alongside her, three young women and three young men in their 2ᵉ year of #engineering studies have taken on the roles of astronomer, scientist, botanist, journalist, health worker and onboard engineer. They are all members of the Mars Club ISAE-SUPAERO, a student association for the popularization of science focused on the Red Planet and the missions dedicated to its exploration and study. They are currently experimenting with AI4U, the artificial intelligence that assists astronauts in their daily tasks (environmental measurements, voice recognition, emergency exercises). They are also conducting a science popularization experiment in collaboration with secondary school pupils. Inspired by the film The Martian, in which an astronaut grows potatoes on the Red Planet, the aim of this experiment is to compare plant growth in Martian soil with growth in terrestrial soil! Orbit Your Thesis: ISAE-SUPAERO in zero gravity with the AIM experiment

Artery In Microgravity (#AIM), the first student scientific experiment designed and developed in collaboration since 2018 by ISAE-SUPAERO and Polytechnique Turin, was launched on 23 November 2022 by Space X's Dragon cargo ship to the International Space Station (ISS)! Selected by the ESA as part of its ‘Orbit your thesis’ programme, AIM aims to study the behaviour of the heart and its arteries in space, in order to determine whether people with heart problems will one day be able to stay there.

Meet Sami Boukezzoula

What is your background?

I graduated from the Lycée Édouard Belin in Vesoul in 2019 with a Bac Scientifique, specialising in engineering sciences. It was also at this school that I passed my BIA (Brevet d’Initiation Aéronautique) in 2017, where I was top of the Bertrand Piccard class in the Besançon academy. I then entered the MPSI at the Lycée Victor Hugo in Besançon, before moving on to the MP at the same school. I was ranked 205ᵉ in the Mines Ponts competitive entrance exam in 2021, which enabled me to enter SUPAERO, which was my first choice!

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO? What do you think are the school's strengths?

Originally, I was passionate about aerospace and SUPAERO is well-known in this field, with alumni as inspiring as astronaut Thomas Pesquet (and now also Sophie Adenot), so it was a dream for me to come to such a school.

What’s more, as I had been sensitive to environmental and climate issues long before I started at SUPAERO, my ambition was to work either on decarbonising the aviation sector or on developing Earth observation missions to characterise and monitor global warming and its consequences.

Coming to SUPAERO made me fully aware of the scale of the environmental crisis and its consequences, particularly for the aerospace sector. More generally, the school is making a commendable effort to train its students in the issues facing the world today and tomorrow (particularly environmental issues) so that they are able to integrate their complexity into their careers.

SUPAERO’s generalist approach and the possibility for each student to choose the courses that best meet their expectations are a definite advantage, guaranteeing a personalised education: the horizon of possibilities is limitless when you study at SUPAERO! And there’s no shortage of student life: dozens of clubs (technical, sports, cultural, etc.), lots of events throughout the year, and Toulouse is the perfect city for students 😊

Can you tell us about your academic exchange? How was it a rewarding experience, both personally and academically?

I spent a semester at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. I was able to choose the courses I wanted, in energy, climate, and fluid mechanics, most of which were taught in English. It was the university’s academic excellence, its international outlook, and its unrivalled setting on the shores of Lake Geneva with its breathtaking views of the Alps that made me decide to go.

I really appreciated the living environment, the teaching methods, and the quality of the teaching, even though it required more work than at SUPAERO. Last but not least, this semester gave me the opportunity to discover Switzerland, a country with a rich variety of landscapes, cheeses, and chocolate!

What areas and subjects have you chosen for your 3rd year? Why did you make this choice?

My gap year was decisive in my choice of direction in the third year. I was able to do two placements: the first at CNES in data processing and research; the second in project management at VALECO, an SME developing wind and solar projects. This gave me a clearer picture of my interests and a more concrete idea of where I wanted to start my career.

I then chose to enter the ETE-Energy and SDS fields. I chose ETE because I believe that environmental issues, and in particular those regarding the energy transition, are a priority if all sectors, and in particular the aerospace sector, are to have a place in a world faced with the consequences of global warming. I chose SDD because I believe that the relevant use of data, possibly using artificial intelligence tools, can inform strategic decision-making in order to serve the ecological transition, among other things.

What are your career plans?

I’m going to do my SFE at EDF in Grenoble in the General Technical Division. My role will be to carry out a statistical analysis of frequency anomalies on French island electricity networks (Corsica, French overseas departments and territories, etc.) and to propose artificial intelligence methods for automatically detecting or even predicting these anomalies. This work will enable electricity network managers to improve their predictive maintenance methods, to help them make investment decisions to improve these networks and also to prepare European electricity systems for the introduction of an increasing proportion of renewable energies.

My career plan is to continue working in the energy sector, while using and developing my skills in data science and AI to help this sector participate in the ecological transition of our societies.

Can you share a few words about life in Toulouse, and more particularly on campus?

Toulouse is an ideal location for students, with a wide range of activities available in the city (bars, restaurants, cinemas, museums, etc.) or nearby (the Pyrenees are just one hour away, the Mediterranean one and a half hours, and the Atlantic two hours).

The SUPAERO campus is perfectly sized and has a number of high-quality facilities, including a rugby pitch (this is the land of the oval ball!), a swimming pool, two gymnasiums, the student centre (with its foyer!) and the Aérothèque Marie Marvingt (where it was great to work and relax in the rest rooms with a good board game or puzzle). Finally, SUPAERO wouldn’t be SUPAERO without its rich and diverse student life, to which the half-day on Thursday afternoons is entirely dedicated.

Personally, I’ve been particularly involved in OSE, the institute’s social outreach association, by volunteering for weekly tutoring sessions for secondary school students in difficulty, as well as for popular science and career guidance events. For the first two years, I was involved in two technical clubs: the Cubesat club (through the TOLOSAT student nanosatellite project) and the S-cube (through the PERSEUS nanofuselage project in collaboration with CNES).

If you had any words for students taking the CCMP?

First of all, congratulations on your eligibility: it’s an important first step that you’ve just taken. Stay calm, composed and focused, and with just one more effort to make during the orals, you’ll have a great life ahead of you! Good luck in the final stretch 😉

Meet Lucie Goethals

What is your background?

After taking a scientific baccalauréat with a major in mathematics at the Lycée Notre-Dame in Chartres, I did two years of scientific preparatory classes at the Lycée Stanislas in Paris: MPSI in the 1st year, PSI in the 2nd year, before coming to ISAE-SUPAERO through the Mines-Ponts competitive entrance exam.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO? What do you see as the school's strengths?

Although I wasn’t a great enthusiast, the space sector still appealed to me! I was particularly attracted by the idea of pursuing a generalist education while working on concrete examples and application exercises in a specific field.

I hadn’t really thought about coming to this school and trying my hand in this field until I found out about ISAE-SUPAERO in my preparatory classes. But after two years of preparatory classes and rather theoretical courses, I found it particularly motivating to be able to project scientific knowledge into concrete applications, especially in this field with high environmental stakes.

The teaching in the first and second years remains broad and general, but the way it is applied and the way it is approached in class makes it all the more captivating. I particularly liked the courses in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, with the study of aerodynamic profiles as an example. Then there are the courses specific to ISAE-SUPAERO, aerospace and aeronautics, such as celestial mechanics and flight mechanics, which provide an even greater view of the field.

Finally, these years at ISAE-SUPAERO, enriched by my gap year, have enabled me to find my way. I’m going into a slightly different field: energy and hydrology. However, I still have a strong Earth observation component that I find particularly stimulating, and in which I have developed skills and a particular interest thanks to my time at the school.

The school has a number of assets that have helped to make the last four years very rewarding, both academically and personally: first of all, the small class size, with around 200 students in the first year. Secondly, its location in the south of France, in Toulouse. The school is also ideally located in Toulouse itself. Finally, it has a particularly rich community and sports life, with many clubs open to all.

The gap year, which is strongly encouraged, provides a great opportunity for openness. Personally, it helped me to find my way thanks to two placements in two different fields: one in research abroad, the other in a large company.

Can you tell us about your academic exchange? How was it a rewarding experience, both personally and academically?

I had the opportunity to do an academic placement at Luleå University of Technology, in the north of Sweden, at the gateway to Swedish Lapland. I took courses in fluid mechanics, CFD, and non-linear physics. But above all, I met some unforgettable people, improved my fluency in English, discovered Swedish culture, Nordic activities such as ice skating, saunas and cross-country skiing, and had a whole host of other unforgettable experiences. I have some excellent memories.

What areas and subjects have you chosen for the 3rd year? Why did you make this choice?

In my final year, I chose the EO (Earth Observation) stream as well as the ETE (Energy, Transport and Environment) stream, with a focus on energy and networks. I wanted to focus the end of my studies on environmental applications. This choice of specialisation came about naturally after my research placement in hydrology, focusing on the SWOT satellite mission.

What are your career plans?

I’m off to do my end-of-studies placement at EDF, working on hydrological forecasting for hydroelectric dam management. This placement is in line with my studies and my specialisations of the last few years, as I’ll be working on meteorological models and Earth observation data in the energy sector. If this placement confirms my interest in Earth observation and hydrology, I’d like to continue in this direction.

A word about life in Toulouse and more particularly on campus?

The community life and atmosphere at the engineering school have helped me to broaden my horizons socially and have given me a lot on a personal level. This spring of 2025 marks the end of my student years for me and I’m already nostalgic about the last 4 years spent alongside my class.

I’ll particularly remember my experiences as a member of the school’s student sports association, and as a member of RAID ISAE, a club that organises an annual sporting RAID open to all, in an idyllic location in the Occitanie region.

If you had any words for students taking the CCMP?

Don’t underestimate yourself during these competitive exams and be confident in yourself and your abilities. Finally, going on to engineering school, and to ISAE-SUPAERO, opens up an infinite range of possibilities. The hardest part will certainly be choosing from among all the options available to you!

What is your background?

I did a Bac S with an Engineering Sciences option at the Lycée Gustave Eiffel in Bordeaux. I did a PTSI/PT preparatory course at the same school.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO? What do you see as the school's strengths?

I’ve always been very interested in space, and the school has a great deal of expertise in this field, as demonstrated by the French astronauts who are alumni. I also appreciate the wide range of disciplines and the truly generalist teaching that is offered. Another guiding principle behind my choice was my desire to stay in the south-west of France for my studies. It’s a great place to live, I grew up there and I’m particularly fond of it.

Can you tell us about your academic exchange? How was it a rewarding experience, both personally and academically?

Firstly, I did my compulsory first year work placement in Tanzania for a 2-month humanitarian internship. I didn’t want to ‘waste’ this month doing a job that didn’t interest me and didn’t contribute anything either personally or to others. On the other hand, with friends from the year, we went to do manual work in schools, which for us had a strong and concrete meaning for those in need.

I spent a semester on exchange in Singapore at the National University of Singapore (NUS). I took a wide variety of courses to explore my different interests: future energy, medical technology, astrophysics, and marine biology. I chose this part of the world because I wanted to discover a new way of life and a culture I knew nothing about. It was also an opportunity to study at a prestigious university where academic excellence is recognised abroad. I love to travel and Singapore is a central location for visiting many countries in South-East Asia.

In the second part of my gap year, I did a second academic exchange at UNIS Svalbard in the Spitsbergen archipelago. For 6 months I studied the aurora borealis, a relatively unknown phenomenon that tells us a lot about the behaviour of our sun and its interaction with the earth. I also wanted to give time to another passion in my life: mountain sports, in particular ski touring.

At the end of this experience of life in the far north, a far cry from anything I’d known before, I worked for Ponant as an Arctic expedition guide for 2 months.

These different experiences allowed me to explore several academic disciplines in detail that I didn’t know about, such as bioengineering, astrophysics, and energy. In the end, this helped me decide on my final year specialisation. Personally, I’ve been able to travel on my own, get out of my comfort zone, and confront a variety of difficulties. I’ve also been able to fulfil dreams and desires that might otherwise have led to frustration in my future working life. I’m honestly very happy to have spent this year for myself, it’s by no means a free year to do nothing – quite the opposite, it’s a year in which you grow more than ever and which allows you to approach the final year of study with peace of mind.

What areas and subjects have you chosen for your 3rd year? Why did you make this choice?

For my final year, I chose the Earth Observation and Science of the Universe pathway (OTSU-SU) and the Design and Operation of Space Systems pathway (COS-TS). With the different courses that I took during my gap year, I chose to continue in what I’ve been passionate about for a long time, i.e. space. These two courses are the most space-oriented at SUPAERO.

What is your career plan? SFE?

I’d like to work in the design and innovation of current space systems such as propulsion on launchers, satellites, or interplanetary manned missions. I aspire to manage teams and projects. I’m going to do my end-of-study placement in Kourou at the Guiana Space Centre. I’m working with CNES on a study of the risk of in-flight lightning strikes on launchers.

A word about life in Toulouse, and more particularly on campus?

As I said earlier, the south-west is a region that I love to live in. The weather is good all year round. Overall: the people are friendly. The location is great, about 1 hours from the Pyrenees (by car or train) and about 2/3 hours from the sea or ocean.

The campus has good transportation links, despite the fact that it’s in the south, and the Canal du Midi is a very convenient major route. There is also a new metro line that will soon be operational. The campus is large, with a large number of sports facilities (rugby pitch, tennis court, basketball pool, etc.) and a student centre with spaces for artistic and technical clubs. As a general rule, community involvement is very much encouraged, and all students can join a wide variety of clubs, or several clubs if they wish, from the first year onwards. The whole campus is available to students so that they can enjoy it at their own pace and according to their own desires.

If you had any words for students taking the CCMP?

Have confidence in yourself and dare to dream!

Meet Clémentine Lelarge

What is your background?

I began my career as a PCSI and then PSI preparatory student at the Lycée Les Lazaristes in Lyon, before taking the CCMP competitive entrance exam and coming to ISAE-SUPAERO. In the first year, I followed the school’s core curriculum, while doing a one-month work placement as an HR assistant in a bookshop. I was also very involved in community life, joining a number of clubs, including volleyball, the European Aerostudent Games (EAG), SUPAEROWING, and OSE ISAE-SUPAERO, an initiative aimed at raising awareness of science among secondary school pupils, particularly girls from priority education areas.

In my second year, I followed the school’s core curriculum and opted for a semester at SUPAERO (S4), where the courses were less science-focused and more oriented towards business, management, biology, and law. I did a three-month research placement at the Centre de Biologie Intégrative in Toulouse, where I worked on mathematical and computer modelling of biological processes to combat neurodegenerative diseases. As far as clubs are concerned, I continued my involvement in OSE ISAE-SUPAERO and was elected President of SUPAEROWING, as well as taking on the role of General Secretary of the school’s Gala.

For my third year, I opted for a double degree in entrepreneurship with the X-HEC Entrepreneurs Masters. I spent my first year at École Polytechnique, where I specialised in the science of environmental challenges, while taking the X entrepreneurship certificate. I also did a six-month placement with Biomemory, an innovative start-up specialising in data storage on DNA molecules to decarbonise data centres.

Finally, in my fourth year, my second year of the double degree took me to HEC Paris. It was a year focused on business creation, where I had the opportunity to work on some very concrete projects. I was also lucky enough to go on exchange to Singapore Management University and do a six-month placement with Shift4Good, a venture capital fund focused on decarbonising mobility.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO? In your opinion, what are the strengths of the school and its courses?

ISAE-SUPAERO is first and foremost a tight-knit, specialised, which means that you really get to know everyone and enjoy a very familial atmosphere. The scientific subjects are of a high standard, and the core curriculum offers a solid education that is not necessarily available in all engineering schools. The school also stands out for its rich community life. Not only can you take part in classic sports such as volleyball, but you can also obtain a parachuting licence, go skiing in the Pyrenees, or organise events such as rowing regattas. The clubs are a real school for leadership and project management, and the skills I acquired in these associations are of great value in my current professional life.

What’s more, the location in Toulouse is ideal, just 15 minutes by bike from the city centre, with a very pleasant climate. The possibility of doing double degrees, in both science and business, is another major advantage of the school, as is the recognition of diplomas internationally, such as the X-HEC Entrepreneurs master’s degree. Above all, ISAE-SUPAERO remains a school of excellence in the fields of aeronautics and aviation, with a network of passionate and extremely competent alumni.

I chose ISAE-SUPAERO because the school made me aware of the challenges of climate change and the importance of technological innovation in meeting them. My time at ISAE gave me a solid scientific base and opportunities to get involved in impact projects, particularly through entrepreneurship. The school is a real crossroads of passionate people, people ready to revolutionise the world for the better.

What is your current position? What does it involve?

I’ve just finished my end-of-studies placement at Shift4Good as a VC Analyst. After this experience, I decided to move away from the financing sector because I felt that it lacked a direct link with the reality on the ground. So I’m joining a high-impact deeptech start-up, where I’ll be taking on the role of Chief of Staff. This position will enable me to work directly with management to help the company grow both operationally and financially, particularly by raising funds. It’s a versatile, very hands-on role, and I’ll have the opportunity to work alongside the C-levels (CEO, etc.), which is an excellent opportunity to learn about leadership responsibilities.

Do you have any words for students taking the CCMP?

My advice would be not to focus solely on the ranking or the professional opportunities. It’s essential to think about your quality of life and the experience you’re going to have during these three years. These are great years, during which you’ll develop personal skills and have unforgettable experiences. Choose a school where you feel at home and where you can develop both personally and professionally. And above all, don’t forget that all roads lead to Rome if you’re motivated and ready to invest yourself!

What is your background?

I passed my baccalauréat in science with a maths major in 2019 at Lycée Stendhal in Grenoble. I then went to preparatory school at Lycée du Parc in Lyon in the PCSI stream, then PC and PC* in 5/2.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO? What do you think are the school's strengths?

I chose ISAE-SUPAERO because it’s a reputable general engineering school, with an aerospace component that interested me in particular for fluid mechanics and space mechanics.

I was also aware that a lot of double degrees were possible, particularly with Sciences Po.

I already knew that I wanted to make the ecological and social transition the core of my future career, and that it was possible to choose the ‘Energy, Transport, Environment’ specialisation in my final year. As well as all these educational aspects, I’d heard lots of positive feedback about Toulouse and campus life!

One of the school’s strong points is its specialisation for people with a particular interest in aeronautics and aerospace, while remaining a general engineering school, which means that people who are simply curious about these fields can flourish here. Other important assets are its student life, its geographical location, and the working environment on campus.

Can you tell us about your double degree with Science Po? Why did you make this choice?

I’m currently doing a double-diploma with Sciences Po Paris between the second and third years of the engineering course at SUPAERO. I’m doing a Masters in European Affairs with a specialisation in ‘Energy, Environment, Sustainability’. I chose to do this because it’s a great opportunity to look at energy and environmental issues from a public policy perspective. I learnt a lot about the economics and regulation of energy, how policies for the ecological transition are made, and how environmental issues are taken into account at several levels. I now know that I would like to participate in the ecological and social transition by working on energy markets or in Earth observation to monitor changes in our environment.

I did my semester abroad at the Technische Universität Berlin. There I was able to take courses in space mechanics, meteorology, water management, adaptation to climate change, and the circular economy with an engineering approach. It was a great experience to develop these subjects that interest me with a slightly different teaching approach. I was able to enjoy Berlin, its culture and the people I met – it’s a very pleasant city, especially in summer. I was able to discover other nearby cities as well as Prague and Copenhagen. It was a very enriching experience that reinforced my professional choices and plans.

What areas and subjects have you chosen for your third year, and why?

I chose the ‘Earth Observation’ field because I discovered during my studies at SUPAERO, my semester abroad in Berlin, and my coursework at Sciences Po that Earth observation satellite data are essential for monitoring changes in our environment and thinking about solutions (for example, for monitoring land artificialisation, flooding, or water resources). I chose the ‘Energy, Transport, Environment’ field because I’m very interested in energy issues, particularly energy markets, which I studied at Sciences Po, and because I’d like to contribute to protecting the environment.

What are your career plans?

I haven’t yet defined a precise career plan. One possibility would be to work in the public administration for the ecological transition (different departments of the ministry or state agencies), or in the energy markets. I’m also very interested in working as an Earth observation engineer and on scientific space missions. I think that the dual engineering profile of Supaero and Sciences Po is just the thing for working on these issues!

A word about life in Toulouse, and more particularly on campus?

Life in Toulouse is really very pleasant. I feel like I’ve seen a lot of sunshine, the campus is well located on the banks of the canal and you can take advantage of all the sports facilities! I’ve been able to enjoy the Pyrenees with the school’s mountaineering club, as well as rowing on the Garonne and cycling and running around Toulouse. It’s a great place for outdoor activities! I’ve also been able to get involved in various clubs on the subjects that are most important to me: SUPAERO For Earth (a student club that raises awareness of environmental issues), the school’s social outreach programme, and the student office’s solidarity and ecology section.

What if you had a word for students taking the CCMP?

Be confident, and take care of yourself during this period!

Meet Fabin Delcan

What is your background?

I first went to a state secondary school in Pau, Saint-John Perse, before entering the MPSI-MP preparatory school at Camille Jullian, a small preparatory school with only one MP and one PC. There weren’t many people admitted to the Grandes Mines, but I had some excellent teachers and some very good friends!

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO? What do you think are the school's strengths?

Like many of us, ISAE-SUPAERO was my goal even before I started preparatory school. As the son of an air traffic controller and private pilot, I was quickly immersed in the world of aviation. In my little prep school, I hung in there and gave everything I had to get into my dream school.

Like many people at ISAE-SUPAERO, I was also admitted to higher-ranked schools, but I made this choice for several reasons:

Apart from Polytechnique, almost all the grandes écoles are the same in the professional world. The key is to differentiate yourself.
I wanted to do mechanics and physics in particular, and I got what I wanted! I was particularly interested in aviation and space, and it’s the best school in France in this field.
I was president of the rocket club and a member of OSE, as well as rowing, baseball, and poker clubs.
The many academic opportunities, in France and abroad.
Going to the same school as Thomas Pesquet is quite something, isn’t it?

Can you tell us about your double degree with X-HEC? Why did you make this choice?

After just over a year at ISAE-Supaero, I decided to be more than an engineer. I chaired the Institute’s large rocket club (+120 people) and got a taste for project management and steering.

The double degree takes place over two years:

A first year at École Polytechnique in 3A, where you can choose any subject (PA for friends) and take an entrepreneurial certificate. You also do a third-year internship like the Xs, usually in a startup.
Then you go on to the MSc X-HEC Entrepreneur, a very practical master’s programme, with little theory and lots of guidance to help you launch a business. The classes are made up of one third engineers, one third business profiles, and one third from other backgrounds, which encourages the formation of multidisciplinary teams.

I wasn’t born an entrepreneur, but I want to work in a dynamic environment, without fixed positions or rigid hierarchies. This double degree is the best option for me: it allows me to quickly gain experience in technical and business management while taking on a fascinating challenge: designing, managing a growing team, finding a market, and convincing investors!

What areas and subjects have you chosen for your third year?

As part of my double degree, I did my third year at École Polytechnique. I chose the Mechanical PA, coupled with an entrepreneurial certificate. I wanted to acquire a solid grounding in mechanics so that I could design autonomous systems such as drones. Mechanics is a bit of a catch-all area in engineering. I already had some knowledge of software and automatic control, which I wanted to complement with a mastery of tools and methods in fluid and structural mechanics to better understand the challenges of design and prototyping. As for the entrepreneur certificate, it was a natural choice to gain experience before my final year in entrepreneurship.

What are your career plans?

I’m not completely sure about my future yet, but what motivates me is the startup environment, both its dynamism and its challenges. I hope to be able to found or join a very technical start-up, probably in the field of drones. But it all depends on the people I meet next year: a startup is above all a human adventure and requires a close-knit team!

A word about life in Toulouse and more particularly on campus?

Toulouse is great fun! Most of us live on our amazing campus, including during weekends, which means we can organise lots of community projects and events.

I know that the community aspect is often overlooked when choosing a school, but on a day-to-day basis it has a real impact. Getting involved in an association means making new contacts and developing personally and professionally. At ISAE-SUPAERO, there are significantly more associations per student than on the Plateau de Saclay, with many technical and aeronautical associations run by real enthusiasts.

If you had any words for students taking the CCMP?

Whether this is a huge challenge for you or a formality, bear in mind that the questions are often very theoretical: take the time to go into the subjects in depth!

"A quantum physics project led me into research".

Alica Nègre

Alicia Nègre joined ISAE-SUPAERO with a keen interest in science, astrophysics and physics. The teaching, internship opportunities, an additional diploma, etc., her choices led her passionately towards quantum physics. An engineer, class of 2023, Alicia is currently working on a thesis in mathematics applied to the calculation of electronic structures. It’s a clear-cut career path!

A passion for science and research

At secondary school, Alicia was captivated by the sciences – why not become a doctor? But maths and physics also fascinated her. Her mind was fed by Arte documentaries and popular science videos, and she followed the youtuber David Louapre, whose subjects fascinated her. In preparatory classes, an introductory course in quantum mechanics left her fascinated by the mysteries of the discipline.

She remembers: “When I joined ISAE-SUPAERO, I was mainly interested in space and astrophysics. With courses in quantum physics, statistical physics and relativity in the first year, I opted for more in-depth elective courses, but I broadened my areas of interest by including quantum physics”.

The real turning point came with a 2ᵉ year research project that Alicia was doing in the Department of Electronics, Optronics and Signal Research (DEOS).

Sébastien Massenot, a teacher-researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO in charge of fundamental physics courses, asked her to collaborate on the development of an experimental protocol based on the work of Irish physicist John Bell and 2022 Nobel Prize winner in Physics Alain Aspect.

It is precisely the measurement of J. Bell’s parameter that Alicia is focusing on, programming and testing in order to automate the measurement, and working on its optimisation to reduce the uncertainties involved. “I learnt a lot and enjoyed the process, exploring avenues of research and working as part of a team. That’s when becoming an engineer made sense to me. I needed to be involved in research, and that anchored me,” she confides.

The enigma of quantum physics

For Alicia, “In quantum mechanics, there are constant exchanges between mathematics and physics. Different mathematical objects and spaces have to be put in place to describe and express these phenomena that cannot be explained using classical physics theories. To understand the behaviour of quantum systems, we need to establish a new mathematical framework that challenges the way we describe physical systems at certain scales. This sheds light on, and even predicts, the concepts of superimposed states and entangled states. After working on the more experimental side, I wanted to go further on the theoretical side and in particular understand how mathematics can describe, model or predict unsuspected behaviours of particles and quantum objects in general and how it supports the work of researchers at the frontier between these fields”.

To do this, in the final year of her engineering course, the student is choosing the Modelling of Complex Systems and Simulation stream, while also taking the Master 2 in Mathematics for Research and Innovation (M2RI) at Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier University. In 2023, Alicia will be doing her final year project at the Centre d’Enseignement et de Recherche en Mathématiques et Calcul Scientifique de l’Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (ENPC – CERMICS). His internship focused on the study of methods for solving the N-body Schrödinger equation, and the possibilities offered by certain quantum algorithms.This is the subject of his thesis at ENPC. “I like this academic, multidisciplinary research environment, which means working at the frontier between chemistry, maths and physics”, she explains.

She continues: “Quantum physics and its applications are not as abstract as you might think. There are many concrete applications in miniaturisation technologies, for example, in our telephones, in telecommunications, in molecular biology, in materials science, in energy, and of course in the prospects opened up by quantum computing. It’s also surprising to see that a large number of branches of mathematics interfere on the same subject: functional analysis, algebra, optimisation, etc.”.

At ISAE-SUPAERO, the teaching of quantum physics is based on research carried out by the Institute’s scientific teams in the aeronautics and space sectors, as well as telecommunications and imaging networks.

This strong link between research and training means that students are offered internship opportunities and projects, and future researchers and engineers are trained in this field.

“What is quantum physics?

Quantum physics was developed in the 20th century to account for many microscopic observations that could not be explained by the theories of mechanics or classical electromagnetism. It has also enabled many verifiable and verified predictions to be made about the properties of matter and radiation on all scales (from elementary particles to astrophysics).

The technological and industrial developments that emerged from this theory in the 20th century have led to considerable advances in fields such as microelectronics, computing, telecommunications, imaging and medicine, to name but a few. By way of illustration, more than a third of the US GDP comes from direct applications of this discipline!

For several decades, many laboratories and industrial players have been interested in developing new applications based on controlling the properties of a single or a few individual quantum particles. Quantum theory predicts that a single particle can be described by several states simultaneously (superposition) and that two particles that have interacted in the past will retain a ‘link’, regardless of the distance separating them (entanglement).

Although not intuitive within a classical framework, these properties have been verified experimentally and can be used to improve the sensitivity of many sensors (accelerometers, gravimeters, etc.), the security of communications, and to accelerate calculations using quantum computers.

The development of these new applications, which we are currently witnessing, is known as the “second quantum revolution”. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.

Sébastien Massenot is a teacher-researcher in physics at ISAE-SUPAERO, in charge of the fundamental physics courses in the General Engineering curriculum.
An introduction to quantum physics is included in this curriculum from the first year core curriculum, and elective modules allow students to delve deeper into this discipline.
Students who wish to do so can continue with additional training to add a more or less strong quantum coloration to their engineering degree, a speciality sought after by many industrialists.

What role does quantum physics play in the teaching at ISAE-SUPAERO?

“An introductory course in quantum physics is offered as part of the core curriculum of the General Engineering course at ISAE-SUPAERO. This theory is also taught in statistical physics in the first year and in thermal physics in the second year. Several elective courses are also offered: in-depth modules (lasers / particle physics) and two modules directly linked to the second quantum revolution (quantum engineering / quantum computing).

These foundations give students a fairly global view of quantum physics and allow those who so wish to complete their training with a double degree: the Institut has a host agreement with the M2 in fundamental physics, quantum engineering and condensed matter at the Université Paul-Sabatier in the third year, as well as double degree agreements with ENS Paris-Saclay and ESPCI, for example.

The Institute is a forerunner in this field, since the elective quantum engineering module has been offered for two decades by our temporary employee and colleague Christian Joachim.

Why is it so important to train engineers in quantum physics?

“The current craze and the very rapid development of quantum technologies mean that, either in the short or long term, many engineers will be confronted with quantum physics during their careers. Having received prior training in this area will be a major advantage. For example, in the space sector, Thalès Alenia Space in Toulouse has a team of engineers dedicated to developing secure quantum satellite communications systems.

Another crucial aspect is on a more personal level: understanding thought in the “quantum world” is not intuitive compared with the macroscopic world we experience every day. It requires us to take a step back, which is also very instructive.

How do you approach quantum physics with 1ʳᵉ year students?

“In addition to the theoretical courses on offer, quantum physics is also broken down experimentally. A polarisation-intruded photon experiment, a simplified replica adapted for students of the experiment by Alain Aspect, who will be awarded the Nobel Prize in 2022, was developed in 2015 in close collaboration with colleagues at the Université Paul-Sabatier.

This experiment is offered as part of the experimental practice activities (20 hours that enable the various aspects of the experiment to be detailed) or as part of the elective quantum engineering module. It aims to illustrate the experimental preparation of a two-photon quantum state and its measurement, and to make a comparison with theoretical predictions.This gives students a much more hands-on approach to the subject.
