Could you tell us about your career path?

Following my national service as a software developer for Alcatel in Vienna, Austria, I began my career in 1997 in research, having completed my engineering degree at ISAE-SUPAERO with a PhD in signal processing applied to telecommunications.

After a few exploratory roles as a software developer, I was recruited into the field of space telecommunications by a major group (Alcatel Espace, which would later become Thales Alenia Space), where I discovered systems engineering. After three years, I moved into the field of navigation, becoming head of design for the European Galileo system. This marked the start of 12 years living abroad with my family (six years in Rome, then six years in Germany).

In Germany, I joined Airbus Defence and Space to take the technical lead on the preliminary design phase of the EGNOS V3 project, for which we were awarded the design contract a few years later. I then had to return to Toulouse, where the project management team was to be based.

In 2020, I joined the European Space Agency in the Netherlands to set up the development of the second generation of the Galileo ground segment using Agile methods (a revolution in this context). Alongside my work, I joined an Air and Space Force reserve squadron specialising in cyber defence.

Today I speak five languages and have some incredible friends in many parts of Europe and around the world.

Why did you decide to pursue an international career?

As soon as the French state school system gave me the opportunity, I loved learning languages.

I started with German. I went on various language study trips to Germany and Austria during the summer, taking advantage of a twinning programme. I was always welcomed by lovely people keen to share their culture.

This sparked my interest in travelling, but I made a point of taking the time to live in the countries I visited – the only effective way to discover a culture.

Right from the start of my studies at ISAE-SUPAERO, I sought to go abroad, which wasn’t all that common at the time. I completed my end-of-course work placement and then my national service as a development worker in Vienna, Austria.

This confirmed my strong passion for life abroad and for multicultural exchanges, whilst remaining true to my own culture, for which I still consider myself something of an ambassador.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue an international career?

I’d advise giving it a go as soon as possible. There’s absolutely no risk in trying. Doing it early on, whilst you still have few ties, is undoubtedly easier. I’ve been lucky enough to have a family – my wife, and then my daughters – who share the same passion and have always been willing to come along with me, but not everyone is so fortunate.

So set off whilst you still can! Don’t put it off until tomorrow.

One word that would sum up your career?

Curiosity and a constant need for something new.

Can you tell us about your background?

I come from a small town in the foothills of the Himalayas in India, and over the years I have built my life and career in France, at the crossroads of cultural diversity, technology, and my passion for aerospace. I often say that India is the land that gave me my roots, and France is the land that gave me my wings — the place where I found my professional purpose and built my future.

My academic path from ISAE-SUPAERO and Manipal University gave me a strong foundation in technology, strategy, and problem-solving, which I later applied in consulting and enterprise transformation roles.

Professionally, I started in advisory work with PwC, supporting aerospace and defence clients, before moving closer to the industry through Airbus-related strategic transformation work. I then joined Microsoft, where I now focus on Digital and AI Strategy for Aerospace, Defence and Public Sector customers.

My work involves engaging with senior executives, governments, defence organisations, and industrial leaders across Europe and beyond, helping them use cloud, AI, data, and sovereign technology to solve complex operational and strategic challenges.

Why did you decide to pursue an international career?

I decided to pursue an international career because my personal and professional journey has always been shaped by crossing borders — culturally, geographically, and intellectually. Coming from India and building my life and career in France gave me a natural appreciation for different perspectives, ways of working, and definitions of success. I learned early that the most interesting problems are rarely local or one-dimensional; they sit at the intersection of cultures, industries, governments, and technologies.

Professionally, I was drawn to sectors such as aerospace, defence, technology, and AI because they are inherently international. Aircraft, defence systems, cloud platforms, supply chains, and digital ecosystems are never built by one country or one company alone. They require collaboration between governments, industrial partners, engineers, strategists, regulators, and customers across multiple geographies. That complexity motivated me.

An international career also gave me the opportunity to continuously reinvent myself. Moving from consulting to industry transformation and then to Microsoft allowed me to work with different types of organisations, from aerospace companies to public sector institutions and defence ecosystems. Each environment taught me something different: consulting taught me structure and client orientation; aerospace and defence taught me industrial complexity and mission focus; Microsoft taught me scale, technology leadership, and the importance of partnerships.

On a more personal level, I wanted a career that would stretch me. Working internationally forces you to listen more carefully, communicate more clearly, and adapt your leadership style. You learn that intelligence alone is not enough; you also need empathy, cultural awareness, humility, and resilience. For me, that has been one of the most valuable parts of the journey.

Ultimately, I chose an international path because I wanted my work to have broader impact. Whether it is helping a defence organisation think about sovereign AI, supporting an aerospace company in its digital transformation, or building bridges between European industry and global technology platforms, I enjoy working on challenges that matter beyond one market. An international career has allowed me to combine ambition, curiosity, and purpose.

What advice would you give to someone looking for an international career?

One word: adaptability.

My advice would be to build adaptability before anything else. An international career is not only about speaking different languages or working in different countries. It is about being able to understand different cultures, business expectations, communication styles, and decision-making environments.

First, become very good at something specific. International opportunities often come to people who bring a clear skill or expertise: technology, finance, strategy, engineering, sales, policy, data, or another strong domain. Your passport may open a door, but your competence keeps you in the room.

Second, learn to communicate simply. When working across cultures, clarity matters more than complexity. Avoid jargon, listen actively, and make sure people understand not only what you are saying, but why it matters.

Third, build a network before you need it. International careers are often shaped by relationships: mentors, colleagues, clients, alumni, and people who believe in your potential. Be generous, stay curious, and maintain relationships across countries and industries.

Fourth, be comfortable with discomfort. Moving countries, changing sectors, or working with global teams can be exciting, but it can also be lonely, confusing, and humbling. You may need to prove yourself again in every new environment. That is normal. Treat it as part of the growth.

Finally, do not try to erase where you come from. Your background is an advantage. The ability to connect different worlds, cultures, and perspectives can become your strongest professional differentiator. An international career rewards people who are both deeply rooted and globally open. My key takeaway would be: don’t just cross borders to build a career — become the bridge that helps others cross them too.

Could you tell us about your career path?

Originally from Montpellier, I joined ISAE-SUPAERO because of my passion for anything that flies and for aeronautics. At a very young age, I was lucky enough to obtain my pilot’s licence, to the point where I was able to fly my parents before I’d even got my driving licence. Like many aviation enthusiasts, I used to dream of flying fighter jets.

After finishing secondary school in Montpellier and then attending preparatory classes at Fermat in Toulouse, I enrolled at ISAE-SUPAERO with the aim of joining a major aerospace group. I have some wonderful memories of that time – from the lectures and the people I met to even paragliding. But back then, I was still trying to work out what I really wanted to do. I explored various fields, from microelectronics to quantum mechanics, in order to broaden my knowledge.

In my third year, I went to Polytechnique Montréal, where I specialised in microelectronics and the microfabrication of microsystems. At the same time, I worked with a professor who was setting up a laboratory focusing on the biomedical applications of microsystems. I found this experience particularly interesting, and it marked the beginning of my interest in the healthcare sector.

On graduating, despite opportunities at Airbus and Eurocopter, I chose to continue my studies at the Collège des Ingénieurs on an MBA programme. It was at that point that I realised the aerospace industry might no longer be what I wanted to do and that I would prefer to join the healthcare sector.

My career then took me to France, Hungary, the United Kingdom and the United States, where I spent a total of seven years. Today, I am based in France but work with India for Biocon. As Vice-President of R&D, I am responsible for all technologies related to drug delivery. I lead a team of 45 people based in Bangalore, with a role that encompasses innovation, development and support for patient-focused technologies.

Why did you decide to pursue an international career?

Initially, my international journey stemmed above all from a personal desire to travel, explore and gain new experiences. The first step was the year I spent in Montreal whilst studying at ISAE-SUPAERO. I found it truly remarkable that the school offered this opportunity to study abroad. That experience was a real turning point: I met people from very different backgrounds and discovered a different culture. In fact, it gave me a taste for travelling.

Afterwards, my wife and I wanted to try something new and build an international experience. So we started looking for opportunities and, when they came along, we seized them. After several professional stints in Europe, the big adventure was moving to the United States with our family. Ultimately, all these stints abroad were driven by the same desire: to explore new environments, discover other cultures and step outside our comfort zone.

What motivated you to return to work in France, and what did your experiences abroad teach you?

We have returned to France, though not necessarily for good, as we are still open to the possibility of leaving again. The decision to return was made at a particular time in our lives, marked by significant family issues and professional considerations. Last year, several factors came together and led to this decision.

Are you considering pursuing an international career in the near future? Why?

Even though I’ve returned, I’ve remained part of an international environment. Initially, I thought I’d continue my career at Sanofi, where I was well established. But this return to France ultimately opened up a new opportunity in India, made possible in particular by a more favourable time difference. This opportunity would undoubtedly not have materialised if I’d remained based in the United States.

Once again, it was a combination of circumstances that created new prospects. Today, I continue to work in a highly international environment, with frequent interactions and travel to various parts of the world, whilst maintaining my main base in France.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue an international career?

When you’re young, you don’t always realise what you’re getting yourself into, but above all you have that desire to do something different. Living abroad allows you to discover a whole host of things you wouldn’t have thought of at the outset. Very quickly, you can find yourself in a sort of ‘golden cage’: you’ve settled in, you’ve got a job, a salary, sometimes a family, a mortgage, and you’re reluctant to step outside that framework. Yet you have to tell yourself that this isn’t necessarily a reason not to take risks. There’s never really a perfect time, and you have to dare to go for it.

My main piece of advice, therefore, is not to put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Living abroad has enabled me to give my career a boost, improve my English and, above all, gain access to opportunities I probably wouldn’t have had in France. Today, I can see just how much it opens doors and allows you to break out of established moulds.

Another important point is networking; I quickly realised its value. Mentors, meetings and professional connections play a key role in seizing international opportunities. It’s not just about friends, but contacts who can help and be helped, and who often make all the difference in a career.

Luca Parmitano, Artemis III astronaut: an ISAE-SUPAERO graduate at the heart of the next step in the return to the Moon

On June 9, 2026, NASA announced the crew for Artemis III, a key mission in the U.S. lunar program scheduled for 2027.

First European astronaut selected for an Artemis mission

Among the four astronauts selected is Luca Parmitano, a graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO’s IEVEX Specialised Master’s programme, who will serve as the mission’s pilot. This is a historic appointment for the European Space Agency (ESA), which is seeing one of its members join an Orion flight crew for the first time,and further demonstrates the contribution made by our Institute’s graduates to major international space exploration programmes.

The announcement was made at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston. Luca Parmitano will join Commander Randy Bresnik and mission specialists Frank Rubio and Andre Douglas aboard the Orion spacecraft.

Scheduled for 2027, Artemis III will be a decisive milestone in the Artemis programme. The mission aims to validate rendezvous and docking operations, as well as procedures associated with future lunar landers developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin, in Earth orbit. These technical demonstrations are essential for the preparation of future crewed lunar exploration missions.

By being appointed mission pilot, Luca Parmitano becomes the first ESA astronaut assigned to an Artemis mission. This selection marks a new stage in European participation in international lunar ambitions.

A benchmark in European space exploration

A former test pilot with the Italian Air Force, Luca Parmitano has been a member of the ESA astronaut corps since 2009. He has already completed two missions aboard the International Space Station (ISS), spending a total of 366 days in space.

During his career, he has carried out six spacewalks and commanded ISS Expedition 61, becoming the first Italian to hold this position. Artemis III will be his third spaceflight.

His appointment as pilot reflects the operational experience he has gained over more than a decade of space missions and confirms the confidence placed by partner agencies in European astronauts during the most critical phases of human space exploration.

ISAE-SUPAERO, a key player in the training of European astronauts

Luca Parmitano’s selection is part of a remarkable trend for our Institute.

Today, five ISAE-SUPAERO graduates hold positions of responsibility within the ESA astronaut corps.

Thomas Pesquet (class of 2001) has completed two missions aboard the ISS and remains one of the most iconic figures in European space exploration. Appointed CEO of Novospace in 2025, he remains a central figure in European human space exploration. He is set to fly as early as 2027 on a third mission aboard the private commercial PAM-6 mission, which he is expected to command.
Sophie Adenot (class of 2004), selected by the ESA in 2022, is currently on her first mission aboard the International Space Station, contributing to numerous international scientific programmes.
Arnaud Prost (class of 2017), an ESA reserve astronaut, is continuing his operational training whilst contributing to projects related to human exploration in extreme environments. In February 2026, he was selected to undertake a spaceflight in 2027 aboard Haven-1, the space station developed by the American start-up Vast: he will become the first French national to stay on a private commercial space station.
Anthéa Comellini (class of 2017 – PhD 2021), also an ESA reserve astronaut, is applying her expertise to the development of navigation and autonomy technologies that will play a central role in future space missions.

A leading role in space exploration

The fact that several ISAE-SUPAERO graduates are currently serving as European astronauts highlights our Institute’s unique position within the space sector.

Thanks to a range of courses covering all the major fields of aeronautics and space, its research activities and its close links with agencies and industry players in the sector, ISAE-SUPAERO has been helping to train the men and women who take part in the great scientific and technological adventures of their time for several decades.

With Luca Parmitano as part of the Artemis III crew, Sophie Adenot currently on mission aboard the ISS, and several graduates involved in future European crewed programmes, ISAE-SUPAERO is confirming its role in preparing the next generation of space explorers.

FRENCH SUPERCAM INSTRUMENT RECORDING THE SOUND OF INGENUITY'S 4th FLIGHT

Located 80 meters from the rover at the moment of take-off, the small helicopter rose to 5 meters above the ground before covering a distance of 133 meters before returning to land where it had taken off from. SuperCam's scientific microphone, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO, recorded the sound emitted by the rotation of the Martian drone's blades during its flight. This sound has a characteristic frequency of 84 Hz, equivalent to the low “E” of a piano or the bass voice of a human being. “This is a big surprise for the whole scientific team,” says Naomi Murdoch, a researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO who is studying the data from the microphone. "Tests carried out in a Martian atmosphere simulator to design this instrument, and our theories of sound propagation, indicated that the microphone would have great difficulty picking up the sounds of the helicopter. Indeed, Mars' thin atmosphere strongly attenuates sound transmission. We needed a bit of luck to record the helicopter from such a distance. We're very pleased to have succeeded in obtaining this recording, which is proving to be a goldmine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere". Developed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and a consortium of CNRS laboratories and its partners, coordinated by CNES, SuperCam's microphone is derived from a consumer model adapted to withstand the Martian environment. It pursues 3 substantial scientific and technical objectives of the Mars 2020 mission: Study the sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks, to gain a better understanding of their mechanical properties. Improving our understanding of atmospheric phenomena (wind turbulence, dust eddies, wind interactions with the rover, and now with the helicopter). Understanding the sound signature of the rover's various movements (robotic arm and mast operations, driving on normal or uneven ground, pump monitoring, etc.). The microphone was first switched on a few hours after Perseverance landed. It recorded the first Martian sounds generated by turbulence in the atmosphere. It is used daily in conjunction with laser rock ablation for chemical analysis of Mars. ABOUT THE MARS 2020 MISSION: NASA is relying on Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the development of the Mars 2020 mission. SuperCam was developed jointly by LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA) and a consortium of laboratories attached to the CNRS, French universities and research establishments. Several Spanish universities, led by the University of Valladolid, are also contributing to the instrument. CNES is responsible to NASA for the French contribution to SuperCam. The instrument is operated alternately from LANL and the French Operations Center for Science and Exploration (FOCSE) at CNES in Toulouse.

ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space organize an international training course on space systems

Twenty engineers from the Peruvian space agency CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) attended a training course in Toulouse designed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space! The aim? To develop their skills in space systems and space missions. The entire program was placed under the academic responsibility of AnnaFederica Urbano, a lecturer and researcher in space systems and launchers at ISAE-SUPAERO. The engineers took part in a preliminary satellite design project. At the end of the five-week course, they all obtained the Certificate of Advanced Studies awarded by ISAE-SUPAERO. For ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space, this experience opens up prospects for future collaborations in training courses of this type for international customers and industrial and institutional partners. The sound of a Martian dust devil captured by the SuperCam microphone on Perseverance

This video and audio show the results obtained by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover and its SuperCam microphone when recording the sounds of a Martian dust devil passing overhead on 27 September 2021, the 215th Martian day or sol of the mission. The dust devil was 25 metres wide and at least 118 metres high, moving at a speed of approximately 19 km/h. This is the first time such a recording has been made, as capturing a dust devil requires a bit of luck. Indeed, it flew over the rover at a time when all of Perseverance's sensors measuring wind, pressure, temperature and dust, plus the NavigationXXX (Navcam) camera, were running. This allowed scientists to combine sounds, images and atmospheric data. The unique combination of this data, along with atmospheric modelling, enabled researchers to estimate the dimensions of the dust devil. Scientists cannot accurately predict when these vortices will occur. Rovers such as Perseverance and Curiosity monitor them regularly. ISAE-SUPAERO est un établissement d'enseignement supérieur axé sur la recherche et l'innovation, qui s'engage à concilier excellence scientifique, visibilité académique et proximité avec les objectifs industriels. Ses activités de recherche ont contribué à faire de l'école un leader international non seulement en termes de programme d'ingénierie aérospatiale, mais aussi de programmes de troisième cycle, notamment ses masters (MSc) et ses programmes de doctorat en sciences de l'ingénierie. C'est pourquoi de nombreux acteurs internationaux clés de la recherche rendent visite à leurs homologues de l'ISAE-SUPAERO. Nous avons rencontré Dan Sheeres, professeur émérite de l'université du Colorado et titulaire de la chaire A. Richard Seebass au département des sciences de l'ingénierie aérospatiale Ann et H.J. Smead de l'université du Colorado à Boulder. Les recherches de Dan Scheeres couvrent des sujets allant de l'astrodynamique et de la navigation spatiale à la science planétaire et à la mécanique céleste, et il a publié de nombreux articles dans ces domaines. L'astéroïde 8887 a été baptisé « Scheeres » en reconnaissance de ses contributions à la compréhension scientifique de l'environnement dynamique des astéroïdes. Pendant son séjour à l'ISAE-SUPAERO, le professeur Scheeres et l'équipe des systèmes spatiaux pour les applications planétaires ont collaboré à l'analyse des données DART et au développement de concepts visant à étudier la structure interne des astéroïdes lors de futures missions spatiales. The Origins of SUPAERO: Two Previously Unpublished Archives Offer a Deep Dive into the School’s History

The history of an institution is not merely reflected in its rankings or partnerships. It is embodied in the faces of those who have shaped it, the decisions that have rooted it in a community, and the men and women who have breathed life into it.

Today, we are making two documents of rare historical value available to our entire community: those eligible for entrance exams, students, alumni, former students and enthusiasts of the history of aeronautics.

Marc Pélegrin, a visionary engineer

A biography to understand a founder

Written by Jean-Claude Ripoll, General Engineer of Armaments and honorary member of the Air and Space Academy, who was a student of Marc Pélegrin in 1960 and later became director of ENSAE (SUPAERO) in 1991, this biography of Marc Pélegrin traces the career of a visionary engineer whose influence left a profound mark on the school and, beyond that, on the aerospace landscape in Toulouse and at ONERA. Through this detailed and rigorous portrait, an entire era comes into focus: one in which France was decentralising and patiently building its technical and scientific excellence in the field of aeronautics and space.

A film to witness history being made

How did SUPAERO establish itself in Toulouse? What role did Marc Pélegrin play in this formative period? A documentary film answers these questions with a deeply personal and family-oriented perspective: directed by Michel Pélegrin, Marc’s son, and enriched by the journalistic insight of Dominique Louise Pélegrin, his daughter, this filmed account is both a historical document and a family tribute. A unique way of seeing the school’s history through the eyes of those who experienced it from the inside.

Their generosity allows everyone to reconnect with the school’s roots.

A destiny shaped between MIT and Toulouse

There are figures whose names eventually become part of the city’s fabric. Since July 2024, an avenue named after Marc Pélegrin has run alongside the ONERA and ISAE-SUPAERO campuses in Toulouse. A tribute etched into the city for a man who literally anchored the school in its local area.

A graduate of the École Polytechnique (class of 1943) and SUPAERO in 1949, Marc Pélegrin understood before many others what would be the strength of the engineering grandes écoles of the future: the inseparable link between teaching and research. He had discovered the model at MIT, where he had the opportunity to further his studies between 1949 and 1950. On his return to France, he founded CERA in 1958—the first research centre in control systems affiliated with a grande école—and then, from 1964, the relocation of the École nationale supérieure de l’Aéronautique to Toulouse, making the inclusion of a research centre specific to the school an essential condition. This demand — deemed bold, even provocative in Paris — earned him the task of leading this historic mission. He became director of the school in September 1969, and simultaneously administrator of the CERT (Centre d’études et de recherches de Toulouse), an entity created in conjunction with ONERA to guarantee the scientific freedom of research.

What is now known as ISAE-SUPAERO, with its world-renowned research laboratories and its roots in the heart of Europe’s aerospace capital, bears the deep imprint of his vision.

Marc Pélegrin passed away on 1 January 2024, as he was entering his 101st year.

These archives are an invaluable treasure for our community. Understanding the history of ISAE-SUPAERO means understanding why we train the engineers and researchers of tomorrow to the high standards that define us. Space: Thomas Pesquet and Arnaud Prost will embark on two unprecedented space missions in 2027

Three ISAE-SUPAERO alumni in space

The French President today announced the signing of an agreement with Vast, the company developing the first commercial space station, to fly two French astronauts: Thomas Pesquet and Arnaud Prost.

A third flight for Thomas Pesquet

Thomas Pesquet (alumnus S2004), who has already spent two periods on board the International Space Station (ISS) and holds the European record for the most time spent in space, has been chosen to command the PAM-6 mission to the ISS.

If his nomination is approved by the station’s international partners(NASA, ESA, Roscosmos, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency ( JAXA ) and the Canadian Space Agency ( CSA)), he will become the first non-American astronaut to command an American capsule on a mission to the ISS.

Arnaud Prost's maiden flight

For his part, Arnaud Prost (S2017 alumnus) will be making his very first space flight aboard Haven-1, the commercial space station developed by Vast. This mission will be a world first for a European astronaut, as it will be the first manned flight to a private space station.

Arnaud Prost has been a reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency since 2022, and is a test pilot and officer in the French Air Force and Space Agency. He is expected to take on the role of flight test engineer.

Based in Long Beach, California, and with more than 1,000 employees, the American company Vast has set up the infrastructure needed to manufacture and operate a commercial space station, Haven-1. The company plans to develop future habitats and systems for the Moon and Mars, space stations for government partners and other manned systems.

Planned to last around two weeks each, these missions will be devoted to scientific, educational and technology demonstration activities. They come at a time of transformation in the space sector, as the ISS nears the end of its operational life (due to be deorbited from 203) and several commercial stations are under development.

This announcement also confirms France’s leading position in the field of manned spaceflight. With Thomas Pesquet, Sophie Adenot (S2008 alumni) and now Arnaud Prost, France is the only European country with three active astronauts.

This momentum illustrates the vitality of the French space ecosystem and the major role played by educational establishments like ISAE-SUPAERO in preparing the space talents of tomorrow.

Can you tell us about your background?

My high school years were marked by the European probe Rosetta and the first mission of astronaut Thomas Pesquet. My passion for space was revealed through these technical and human adventures, which unite people around a dream that can only be achieved through determination (and a lot of hard work!).

After graduating in aerospace engineering from IPSA and spending several periods abroad during my scientific studies (Ireland, Italy and Portugal), I was lucky enough to study at ISAE-SUPAERO as part of the Specialised Masters in Aerospace Project Management. This course enables me to combine technical, organisational and human aspects in my professional projects.

Since the end of 2023, I have been living in Swedish Lapland and working for the Swedish Space Corporation at the Esrange space centre, 200 km above the Arctic Circle. I am Project Manager & Flight Director for suborbital rocket and stratospheric balloon launch campaigns (21 launches to date).

Why did you decide to pursue an international career?

I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. Going abroad allowed me to practise another language every day, learn about another culture and meet people from different backgrounds. It’s an enriching adventure that allows you to discover the world, to open up to others and, ultimately, to get to know yourself so that you can better yourself. I’m also convinced that diversity is the key to the success of any space project and working in international teams is something I’m really proud of.

Travelling gives you a better understanding of the world. There’s no substitute for experience in a country other than your own.

What advice would you give to someone looking for an international career?

There will always be a thousand good reasons for not leaving, for worrying and wondering “what if something goes wrong? The most important thing is to be passionate and to enjoy your work every day. An international career means opportunities, encounters and, without doubt, lots of adventures to live and talk about.

To those who doubt: if you’re driven by the desire to go somewhere else, happiness will follow! ISAE-SUPAERO is a springboard to take advantage of, and after taking your first step outside your own borders, who knows, maybe space will be your next destination…

Stop thinking, just do it!

Can you tell us about your background?

I began my studies in aerospace engineering at the Politecnico di Milano before coming to ISAE-SUPAERO as part of a double-diploma programme. In 2008 I was selected for the NASA Academy, NASA’s programme of excellence for students. I carried out research in infrared astrophysics, then returned the following year to carry out my final year project, which led to a position within the agency.

I went on to do a PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in collaboration with NASA. For several years I worked on the James Webb telescope, before being appointed chief engineer for two astrophysical missions and then head of planetary protection for the last mission in the Mars Sample Return programme.

I am currently Deputy Chief Technology Officer at NASA Goddard.

Why did you decide to pursue an international career?

I learned that ISAE-SUPAERO was the best school in France and one of the best in Europe in the field of aerospace engineering. It also offered many connections with companies, which was a real advantage in terms of finding a job. What’s more, I’d never lived abroad before and I wanted to discover a new culture, learn a new language, and come into contact with ways of thinking and doing things that were different from my own.

What advice would you give to someone looking for an international career?

Prepare yourself as well as possible by developing intercultural experiences and reinforcing your language skills. You’ll also be able to develop your adaptability and flexibility, essential qualities for integrating into different cultural contexts, especially in the workplace.

Take advantage of internship opportunities abroad that will allow you to explore several opportunities in your field and at the same time build an international network. This will enrich you deeply and give you unique technical and soft skills.
