Focus on… quantum physics at ISAE-SUPAERO: a student journey

"A quantum physics project led me into research".

Alica Nègre

Alicia Nègre joined ISAE-SUPAERO with a keen interest in science, astrophysics and physics. The teaching, internship opportunities, an additional diploma, etc., her choices led her passionately towards quantum physics. An engineer, class of 2023, Alicia is currently working on a thesis in mathematics applied to the calculation of electronic structures. It’s a clear-cut career path!

A passion for science and research

At secondary school, Alicia was captivated by the sciences – why not become a doctor? But maths and physics also fascinated her. Her mind was fed by Arte documentaries and popular science videos, and she followed the youtuber David Louapre, whose subjects fascinated her. In preparatory classes, an introductory course in quantum mechanics left her fascinated by the mysteries of the discipline.

She remembers: “When I joined ISAE-SUPAERO, I was mainly interested in space and astrophysics. With courses in quantum physics, statistical physics and relativity in the first year, I opted for more in-depth elective courses, but I broadened my areas of interest by including quantum physics”.

The real turning point came with a 2ᵉ year research project that Alicia was doing in the Department of Electronics, Optronics and Signal Research (DEOS).

Sébastien Massenot, a teacher-researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO in charge of fundamental physics courses, asked her to collaborate on the development of an experimental protocol based on the work of Irish physicist John Bell and 2022 Nobel Prize winner in Physics Alain Aspect.

It is precisely the measurement of J. Bell’s parameter that Alicia is focusing on, programming and testing in order to automate the measurement, and working on its optimisation to reduce the uncertainties involved. “I learnt a lot and enjoyed the process, exploring avenues of research and working as part of a team. That’s when becoming an engineer made sense to me. I needed to be involved in research, and that anchored me,” she confides.

The enigma of quantum physics

For Alicia, “In quantum mechanics, there are constant exchanges between mathematics and physics. Different mathematical objects and spaces have to be put in place to describe and express these phenomena that cannot be explained using classical physics theories. To understand the behaviour of quantum systems, we need to establish a new mathematical framework that challenges the way we describe physical systems at certain scales. This sheds light on, and even predicts, the concepts of superimposed states and entangled states. After working on the more experimental side, I wanted to go further on the theoretical side and in particular understand how mathematics can describe, model or predict unsuspected behaviours of particles and quantum objects in general and how it supports the work of researchers at the frontier between these fields”.

To do this, in the final year of her engineering course, the student is choosing the Modelling of Complex Systems and Simulation stream, while also taking the Master 2 in Mathematics for Research and Innovation (M2RI) at Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier University. In 2023, Alicia will be doing her final year project at the Centre d’Enseignement et de Recherche en Mathématiques et Calcul Scientifique de l’Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (ENPC – CERMICS). His internship focused on the study of methods for solving the N-body Schrödinger equation, and the possibilities offered by certain quantum algorithms. This is the subject of his thesis at ENPC. “I like this academic, multidisciplinary research environment, which means working at the frontier between chemistry, maths and physics”, she explains.

She continues: “Quantum physics and its applications are not as abstract as you might think. There are many concrete applications in miniaturisation technologies, for example, in our telephones, in telecommunications, in molecular biology, in materials science, in energy, and of course in the prospects opened up by quantum computing. It’s also surprising to see that a large number of branches of mathematics interfere on the same subject: functional analysis, algebra, optimisation, etc.”.

At ISAE-SUPAERO, the teaching of quantum physics is based on research carried out by the Institute’s scientific teams in the aeronautics and space sectors, as well as telecommunications and imaging networks.

This strong link between research and training means that students are offered internship opportunities and projects, and future researchers and engineers are trained in this field.

“What is quantum physics?

Quantum physics was developed in the 20th century to account for many microscopic observations that could not be explained by the theories of mechanics or classical electromagnetism. It has also enabled many verifiable and verified predictions to be made about the properties of matter and radiation on all scales (from elementary particles to astrophysics).

The technological and industrial developments that emerged from this theory in the 20th century have led to considerable advances in fields such as microelectronics, computing, telecommunications, imaging and medicine, to name but a few. By way of illustration, more than a third of the US GDP comes from direct applications of this discipline!

For several decades, many laboratories and industrial players have been interested in developing new applications based on controlling the properties of a single or a few individual quantum particles. Quantum theory predicts that a single particle can be described by several states simultaneously (superposition) and that two particles that have interacted in the past will retain a ‘link’, regardless of the distance separating them (entanglement).

Although not intuitive within a classical framework, these properties have been verified experimentally and can be used to improve the sensitivity of many sensors (accelerometers, gravimeters, etc.), the security of communications, and to accelerate calculations using quantum computers.

The development of these new applications, which we are currently witnessing, is known as the “second quantum revolution”. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.

Discover... ISAE-SUPAERO's cryogenic equipment for electrical testing

ISAE-SUPAERO - as a center for training through research, research training and innovation - has a wide range of research equipment used by its 6 research departments. Today, we present our cryogenic equipment for electrical testing! ISAE-SUPAERO's image sensor research group (CIMI) studies sensors in the visible wavelength range, but also sensors in different spectral ranges such as infrared. Detection of these longer wavelengths requires materials other than silicon for detection, combined with a silicon readout circuit for information processing, all operating at cryogenic temperature. In this context, ISAE-SUPAERO has developed electrical and electro-optical characterization benches for low-temperature microelectronic circuits, in order to extract and model their behavior and performance. These characterization benches can address both very simple circuits, such as transistors, and complex components (complete sensors) with up to 120 inputs/outputs.

Discover... CMOS image sensors at ISAE-SUPAERO

ISAE-SUPAERO - as a center for training through research, research training and innovation - has a wide range of research equipment used in its 6 research departments. Today, we present CMOS image sensors! CMOS image sensors are playing an increasingly important role in our everyday lives. For several years now, our team at ISAE-SUPAERO has been developing CMOS image sensors with a number of players in the field, and innovating by proposing new architectures and conditions of use requiring studies of both elementary components and more complex structures. Measurements are carried out on transistors and diodes with the help of an under-tip tester and a parametric analyzer enabling very low current measurements (10 aA). Similarly, simple structures containing innovative pixels can be operated with the tester using spike cards coupled to a word generator specially designed for image sensors. All these studies not only contribute to our understanding of the physics of photodetection, but also provide models for our simulators. They are also used to monitor manufacturing processes during the various production phases.

FRENCH SUPERCAM INSTRUMENT RECORDING THE SOUND OF INGENUITY'S 4th FLIGHT

Located 80 meters from the rover at the moment of take-off, the small helicopter rose to 5 meters above the ground before covering a distance of 133 meters before returning to land where it had taken off from. SuperCam's scientific microphone, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO, recorded the sound emitted by the rotation of the Martian drone's blades during its flight. This sound has a characteristic frequency of 84 Hz, equivalent to the low “E” of a piano or the bass voice of a human being. “This is a big surprise for the whole scientific team,” says Naomi Murdoch, a researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO who is studying the data from the microphone. "Tests carried out in a Martian atmosphere simulator to design this instrument, and our theories of sound propagation, indicated that the microphone would have great difficulty picking up the sounds of the helicopter. Indeed, Mars' thin atmosphere strongly attenuates sound transmission. We needed a bit of luck to record the helicopter from such a distance. We're very pleased to have succeeded in obtaining this recording, which is proving to be a goldmine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere". Developed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and a consortium of CNRS laboratories and its partners, coordinated by CNES, SuperCam's microphone is derived from a consumer model adapted to withstand the Martian environment. It pursues 3 substantial scientific and technical objectives of the Mars 2020 mission: Study the sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks, to gain a better understanding of their mechanical properties. Improving our understanding of atmospheric phenomena (wind turbulence, dust eddies, wind interactions with the rover, and now with the helicopter). Understanding the sound signature of the rover's various movements (robotic arm and mast operations, driving on normal or uneven ground, pump monitoring, etc.). The microphone was first switched on a few hours after Perseverance landed. It recorded the first Martian sounds generated by turbulence in the atmosphere. It is used daily in conjunction with laser rock ablation for chemical analysis of Mars. ABOUT THE MARS 2020 MISSION: NASA is relying on Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the development of the Mars 2020 mission. SuperCam was developed jointly by LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA) and a consortium of laboratories attached to the CNRS, French universities and research establishments. Several Spanish universities, led by the University of Valladolid, are also contributing to the instrument. CNES is responsible to NASA for the French contribution to SuperCam. The instrument is operated alternately from LANL and the French Operations Center for Science and Exploration (FOCSE) at CNES in Toulouse.

Discover... ISAE-SUPAERO's mobile ground robots

ISAE-SUPAERO - as a center for training through research, research training and innovation - has a wide range of research equipment used in its 6 research departments. Today, we'd like to introduce you to mobile ground robots! Whether robots, airplanes, cars or even telephones, all these technologies are equipped with perception systems. Depending on the application, these sources of information make it possible to perceive the environment in which a system is evolving, and also to measure its own characteristics, such as speed or acceleration. This multitude of data must then be used, cross-referenced and interpreted within the navigation system to obtain the vehicle's position, but also, in the case of mapping applications, that of surrounding objects. Within the DEOS NAVIRRES team, researchers are interested in navigation systems and their application in complex environments where sensor information may be degraded, erroneous or unavailable. Mobile acquisition platforms are being developed. These are equipped with cameras, lidars, GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receivers, radars and inertial units, with the aim of obtaining the most efficient navigation system for the application in question. One of the team's research themes is the analysis of the degradation of sensor information, enabling the development of new robust and adaptive algorithms to compensate for environmental constraints. The aim is to make navigation systems more accurate and safer, for critical applications requiring strong reliability constraints, such as autonomous cars or exploration robotics.

"The foundations in quantum physics offered at ISAE-SUPAERO enable students who wish to do so to delve deeper into the discipline and pursue more advanced training".

Sébastien Massenot
  • Sébastien Massenot is a teacher-researcher in physics at ISAE-SUPAERO, in charge of the fundamental physics courses in the General Engineering curriculum.
  • An introduction to quantum physics is included in this curriculum from the first year core curriculum, and elective modules allow students to delve deeper into this discipline.
  • Students who wish to do so can continue with additional training to add a more or less strong quantum coloration to their engineering degree, a speciality sought after by many industrialists.

What role does quantum physics play in the teaching at ISAE-SUPAERO?

“An introductory course in quantum physics is offered as part of the core curriculum of the General Engineering course at ISAE-SUPAERO. This theory is also taught in statistical physics in the first year and in thermal physics in the second year. Several elective courses are also offered: in-depth modules (lasers / particle physics) and two modules directly linked to the second quantum revolution (quantum engineering / quantum computing).

These foundations give students a fairly global view of quantum physics and allow those who so wish to complete their training with a double degree: the Institut has a host agreement with the M2 in fundamental physics, quantum engineering and condensed matter at the Université Paul-Sabatier in the third year, as well as double degree agreements with ENS Paris-Saclay and ESPCI, for example.

The Institute is a forerunner in this field, since the elective quantum engineering module has been offered for two decades by our temporary employee and colleague Christian Joachim.

Why is it so important to train engineers in quantum physics?

“The current craze and the very rapid development of quantum technologies mean that, either in the short or long term, many engineers will be confronted with quantum physics during their careers. Having received prior training in this area will be a major advantage. For example, in the space sector, Thalès Alenia Space in Toulouse has a team of engineers dedicated to developing secure quantum satellite communications systems.

Another crucial aspect is on a more personal level: understanding thought in the “quantum world” is not intuitive compared with the macroscopic world we experience every day. It requires us to take a step back, which is also very instructive.

How do you approach quantum physics with 1ʳᵉ year students?

“In addition to the theoretical courses on offer, quantum physics is also broken down experimentally. A polarisation-intruded photon experiment, a simplified replica adapted for students of the experiment by Alain Aspect, who will be awarded the Nobel Prize in 2022, was developed in 2015 in close collaboration with colleagues at the Université Paul-Sabatier.

This experiment is offered as part of the experimental practice activities (20 hours that enable the various aspects of the experiment to be detailed) or as part of the elective quantum engineering module. It aims to illustrate the experimental preparation of a two-photon quantum state and its measurement, and to make a comparison with theoretical predictions. This gives students a much more hands-on approach to the subject.

“What is quantum physics?

Quantum physics was developed in the 20th century to account for many observations on a microscopic scale that could not be explained by the theories of classical mechanics or electromagnetism. It has also enabled many verifiable and verified predictions to be made about the properties of matter and radiation on all scales (from elementary particles to astrophysics).

ISAE-SUPAERO and Safran inaugurate an innovation chair to train the engineers of tomorrow

Publication Date

02 October 2024

Category

Innovation

Safran, an international high-technology group operating in the aerospace and defence sectors, is strengthening its partnership with ISAE-SUPAERO by creating, with the support of the ISAE-SUPAERO Foundation, a sponsorship chair focusing on innovation: “Innovating in a world in transition”. The aim of this three-year chair is to support the training of engineers capable of innovating in a world in transition.

Safran shares with ISAE-SUPAERO and its Foundation the desire to promote academic excellence and industrial innovation in the aerospace sector. This partnership enables us to strengthen our ties, contribute to the emergence of new skills, and support ambitious projects that meet the challenges of the future. Safran is proud to have supported the creation of this Chair, thereby helping to train the talent of tomorrow and drive forward key innovations for the future of the sector.
Eric Dalbiès – Group Executive Vice President, Strategy, Technology and Innovation, Safran

A Chair to meet the challenges facing the sector

The challenges facing the aeronautics and space sectors, such as the energy transition, New Space and digitalisation, mean that there is a growing need for accomplished professionals with the capacity to innovate. The aim is to combine the technical and methodological skills of engineers with the know-how that is essential for innovation (creativity, teamwork, customer approach, etc.) to enable them to become genuine agents of change.

Innovation and entrepreneurship are strategic pillars of ISAE-SUPAERO. On campus, students, doctoral candidates and teacher-researchers can take advantage of InnovSpace, an open, well-equipped space to create, develop and support their projects. In partnership with Safran and our Foundation, the Innovation Chair is a real springboard for taking this dynamic further.
Romain Buquet and François du Cluzel – ISAE-SUPAERO referents for this collaboration

The chair has three main focuses

  • Training

The Chair will provide financial support by awarding two excellence scholarships each year to promising young professionals so that they can join the Advanced Masters® in Innovation Entrepreneurship & Management (MS IEM). It will provide support for teaching experiments, study trips for students and support for the hosting and international mobility of professors, researchers and innovation experts.

The Foundation is delighted that this agreement marks the start of a new collaboration with Safran, based on a shared vision of training the innovative engineers of tomorrow. In addition to accelerating ISAE-SUPAERO’s innovation drive, the Chair has a strong social dimension, notably through scholarships that support young people embarking on their entrepreneurial adventure by covering part of their living expenses.
Agnès Trincal – Director of the ISAE-SUPAERO Foundation

  • Support

This involves putting young entrepreneurs in touch with renowned experts through a series of conferences and workshops.

  • Start-up

The Chair also provides two start-up and life grants to young graduates of one of the ISAE-SUPAERO courses. Thanks to these grants, project leaders incubated in the Institute’s InnovSpace will be able to mature their project and give it a new dimension by joining the Advanced Masters® in Innovation Entrepreneurship & Management.

Projects relating to aeronautics, space, decarbonisation and sovereignty, as well as the behavioural skills of candidates and the maturity of existing projects, are all assets in the selection of candidates.

This new chair is an opportunity to perpetuate the relationship between Safran and ISAE-SUPAERO, which is already linked by technical partnerships and previously by the AEGIS chair dedicated to innovative propulsion systems for the next generation of aircraft!

3 questions to Marie Delaroche, 3ᵉ year student and MDRS 293 crew commander

Since February 18, seven ISAE-SUPAERO engineering students have been living a simulated Martian life and carrying out experiments in collaboration with CNES and several research laboratories at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in UTAH (USA)! For the second time, the mission is led by a woman: Marie Delaroche, a passionate #spaceexplorer, who was already part of crew 275 departing in 2023. We asked her 3 questions to find out more about the challenges of this mission and her feelings as #flightcommander! Alongside her, three young women and three young men in their 2ᵉ year of #engineering studies have taken on the roles of astronomer, scientist, botanist, journalist, health worker and onboard engineer. They are all members of the Mars Club ISAE-SUPAERO, a student association for the popularization of science focused on the Red Planet and the missions dedicated to its exploration and study. They are currently experimenting with AI4U, the artificial intelligence that assists astronauts in their daily tasks (environmental measurements, voice recognition, emergency exercises). They are also conducting a science popularization experiment in collaboration with secondary school pupils. Inspired by the film The Martian, in which an astronaut grows potatoes on the Red Planet, the aim of this experiment is to compare plant growth in Martian soil with growth in terrestrial soil! Arnaud Prost, ESA reserve astronaut and ISAE-SUPAERO alumnus: “I was incredibly lucky to be here”

Fighter pilot and reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), Arnaud Prost returned to his former school on Thursday March 28 to meet 200 secondary school students as part of the ISAE SUPAERO OSE program. It was an opportunity for him to recall the “great memories” of his student experience at ISAE-SUPAERO, his long-standing commitment to the student social outreach program and the “Aquanauts” scheme he set up with OSE l'ISAE-SUPAERO. And in passing, he offers a few words of advice to young people who might dream of following in his footsteps: “Don't let yourself be convinced that one of these paths isn't for you!” A 2017 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Arnaud Prost is among those selected for the ESA Astronaut Class of 2022, alongside Sophie Adenot and Anthea Comellini, both also alumni of the school. They join other illustrious ESA astronauts who have already studied at the school: Thomas Pesquet, Luca Parmitano and Samantha Cristoforetti. Since 1970, ISAE-SUPAERO has contributed to the progress of the space age through its training, research and innovation activities. As the only organization in France to offer degree courses (engineering, master's, specialized master's, doctorate) covering all 22 space-related themes identified by CNES, the Institute offers a royal road to space careers. Laurent Michel appointed programme director of the General Engineering programme at ISAE-SUPAERO

Publication Date

27 August 2024

Category

Education

Meeting with Laurent Michel

Laurent Michel graduated from INSA in 1987 with a degree in physical engineering, specialising in materials for electronics (DEA). He then went on to do a PhD on the study of the anelastic behaviour of polymer matrix composite materials by thermo-stimulated creep, funded by DGA-DRET, in the solid state physics laboratory at Paul Sabatier University.

In 1993, he joined ENSICA’s Mechanical Engineering department to teach mechanics and launch the school’s first research activities in the field of organic matrix composites.

A professor of structural mechanics and materials, in 2019 he became head of the Department of Structural Mechanics and Materials (DMSM) at ISAE-SUPAERO. Since 1 July, he has been head of the general engineering training programme at ISAE-SUPAERO.

You have been Head of the ISAE-SUPAERO General Engineer training programme since 1 July. What will your duties involve?

The main tasks of this new post concern the day-to-day running of the general engineering course. But the essential and immediate challenge is to overhaul this curriculum, incorporating a skills-based approach. New technologies (quantum, AI, cybersecurity, etc.), the energy transition and environmental and social issues will also have to find their place in this new formula for the curriculum, without losing its DNA.

How does this new position fit in with your career path?

I’ve been a professor of structural mechanics and materials since 1993, first at ENSICA, then at ISAE-SUPAERO. I have also developed research activities, mainly around the damage tolerance of composite materials and their mechanical behaviour in fatigue or under the effect of the environment.

In terms of training, I have been responsible for a number of tasks in the general engineering curriculum, including setting up a specific 2nd year course in structural design (120 hours) when the ENSICA curriculum was overhauled, recruiting engineering students on the basis of competitive examinations and admissions on the basis of qualifications, and setting up the Validation of Acquired Experience.

Finally, since the merger of the SUPAERO and ENSICA engineering programmes in 2015, I have taken on the role of training coordinator for the Structures and Materials Mechanics Department (DMSM), and then I have been responsible for the common scientific core module on the mechanics of deformable solids in the General Engineering programme, and co-responsibility for the 3rd year ‘Structures and Materials’ course.

How do you see your new responsibilities?

It will be an opportunity for me to get closer to all our students and explore their expectations of the Institute. I’ll be passing on a bit more, and in a different way. Finally, I attach a great deal of importance to the feeling of ownership, particularly among the teaching staff: I think it’s important that the teachers and students are in tune with each other and that they enjoy what they do.

Meet Camille, an engineering student selected for the Young Pilots Air Tour

Publication Date

26 July 2024

Meeting with Camille Delesalle

What inspired you to take your pilot's licence when you were a teenager?

Ever since I was a child, I’ve dreamed of being an airline pilot. When I was 13, my grandmother took me to her local flying club, which inspired me to start my PPL training. My parents offered me an introductory flight and asked the instructor to move the plane around a bit, thinking I’d get over it! But when I took the controls, I loved it. My family supported me and I started taking lessons. I got my PPL when I was 17.

Did you enter ISAE-SUPAERO with the idea of becoming a professional pilot?

I made my choices for Parcoursup in the middle of COVID. At the time, pilots were being made redundant by the airlines. So I looked for a different path related to aeronautics. I went to a PCSI/PSI* preparatory school in Paris with one goal in mind: ISAE-SUPAERO. It was the only school that interested me! I gave myself the means and today I’m really happy to be there. With my engineering degree, I’d like to contribute to green aviation. It’s important if we want to continue to practise our passion. But I’m also keeping my dream in mind and would like to get my instrument rating once I’ve got my degree.

Do you manage to reconcile your flying activities with your courses at ISAE-SUPAERO?

Exactly! As I already have the PPL, I wasn’t able to take advantage of the Sup’ aircraft, which are reserved for training students preparing for the licence. But I did join the Claude-Chautemps flying club, which is right next to the ISAE-SUPAERO hangar on the Toulouse-Lasbordes airfield. At lunchtime, I got on my bike, rode to Lasbordes and went flying.

The Young Pilots Airborne Tour (TAJP)

The TAJP is a flying tour of France organised every two years by the French Aeronautical Federation (FFA). It brings together around forty pilots aged between 18 and 24, selected according to aptitude criteria. It includes several navigation tests interspersed with meetings on the ground with the public, with the aim of promoting light aviation. This year, there were six stages in Belfort, Tours, Dinard, Niort, Toulouse and Clermont.

Tell us about your selection for the Tour Aérien des Jeunes Pilotes...

I signed up for the selection in January. There were 110 of us. For the first phase, I had to define a route based on constraints. I then had to complete a 2-hour flight with a GPS tracker that allowed the FFA to check my route. At the end of this navigation test, there was a handling test. The second selection phase took place over a weekend at a CREPS, with theory, navigation and group tests with a problem to solve and an interview on camera. At the end, there were 45 of us. I met up with Jordan Goncalves, who is in his final year of the Industrial Engineering apprenticeship programme, and Alexandre Iché, who has just graduated and who did his PPL at ISAE-SUPAERO.

Out of 45 drivers selected, only six of you are young women. Do you see yourself as an ambassador for women pilots?

I think girls censor themselves more and I want to combat that. Through my experience, I want to show that it’s important to be there, that everyone is capable of becoming a pilot! For the TAJP, I was sponsored by the Association des Femmes Pilotes, which contacted me without my even having to make the effort. I was really touched.

What will you take away from your TAJP experience?

Firstly, the human side, which is much stronger than I had imagined. When we fly, we can all hear each other on the same radio frequency. We share this adventure together, both in the air and on the ground, and I’ll always have great memories of it. It’s also an incredible learning curve for the pilots. We’re in daily contact with our aircraft. I’ve never flown so much in so little time. I’ve now flown 170 hours!

The 11th Parachute Brigade and ISAE-SUPAERO sign a framework agreement for the development of innovative field drones

Publication Date

02 July 2024

Category

Research

On June 27th, General Frédéric Danigo, representing the 11th Parachute Brigade (BP), and Olivier Lesbre, Director General of ISAE-SUPAERO, signed a framework agreement to develop innovative field UAVs. The aim of this partnership is to establish a secure legal framework for collaboration between the two organisations. The agreement, for an initial period of 5 years, will enable a number of partnerships to be set up in various areas of research.

François du Cluzel, Head of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Department at ISAE-SUPAERO, who is co-sponsor of this project, will ensure that the collaboration runs smoothly by means of the following actions:

  • exchanges of information, up to and including the provision of a state-of-the-art report on UAVs and the creation of concepts;
  • cooperative studies and analyses;
  • production of prototypes or demonstrators;
  • joint use of facilities for prototyping, testing, trials and experiments;
  • participation in integrated team projects, for a given period of human resources on the same site, including the possible use of reservists;
  • the loan of equipment and/or demonstrator(s) by one or other establishment.

In this way, the 11th BP will benefit from ISAE-SUPAERO’s expertise and facilities in drone research, as well as from the Institute’s innovation drive.

The topic of logistics drones is the first to give rise to a specific agreement. The aim is to be able to work together on a range of subjects of interest to the 11th BP and to its students and staff. This first project will most certainly also be the subject of an Engineering-Company Project (ECP) for 3rd year engineering students.

Alain Filipowicz – Alumni (S1988) and reserve colonel in the 11th BP, correspondent and responsible for monitoring and coordinating the agreement.

A win-win partnership!

A cutting-edge software platform integrated into ISAE-SUPAERO’s engineering programmes

Engineering project

Presentation of the project

In a corner of InnovSpace, Ahlem is loading the first-aid drone that she and four of her friends have developed. “We chose to design a rescue drone, capable of providing first aid to an injured person in the mountains”, explains Lilian, who is standing next to her. A drone… that only Ahlem can see, with his augmented reality helmet over his eyes. The object is virtual. It was created by the students on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform

Developed by Dassault Systèmes, this platform can be used to create the digital twin of any product and simulate all the stages in its life cycle. “It’s cutting-edge software, because its portfolio of applications is complete. It includes more than 400 applications used in industry, which makes it possible to virtually carry out an engineering project from A to Z,” explains Thomas Zamolo, head of the module at ISAE-SUPAERO. “Something that would be impossible in real life.”

Deployed in 2023 by the ISAE Group schools as part of an academic partnership with Dassault Systèmes, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is used at ISAE-SUPAERO to train students on the Industrial Engineering apprenticeship, Master’s and Advanced Master’s® courses. It will be extended to the General Engineering course at the start of the new academic year in September.

A public utility drone, 100% digital

For the time being, the module that Thomas Zamolo and Luc Patouillard have created around the platform is aimed at 3rdᵉ year apprenticeship students, “to put into practice the skills they have acquired during the first two years”.

Based on the digital twin of a commercial drone, accessible in the software, they have to imagine and manufacture a payload that meets a customer need. Working in groups of five, the students have 90 hours to devise the specific features of their drone, design their payload, identify the right materials, manufacture the parts and assemble them, test the mechanisms and robustness of their product and finalise it. All in a 100% digital environment. “You can do everything with it,” says Ahlem. You can model your product in 3D or run a dynamic simulation of each component and each element that makes it up.

The final sessions, held at InnovSpace, the Institute’s fablab and incubator, are an opportunity for the students to bring their projects to life. In workshops, they will be able to manipulate their drone using virtual reality, print a 3D model and even draw up a marketing plan for its commercialisation.

“A global vision of the project”

Thanks to this module, future apprentice engineers can strengthen their skills in systems engineering, mechatronics, finite element simulation and manufacturing engineering, while improving their project management skills. “The interface offered by 3DEXPERIENCE brings them closer to what they will use in business. The difference is that in a company, they will never have access to the entire portfolio of applications. Through this project, we are giving them a global vision of the business applications used in industry”, notes Thomas Zamolo.

Each half-day course gives learners the opportunity to acquire a new skill, in line with the skills-based approach gradually being developed at the Institut. And some curious students go even further! This was the case for Ahlem and Lilian’s group: “In the applications catalogue, we came across a sheet metal module that we could use to create an aluminium box. We worked out how to use it ourselves.”

Towards joint projects with the ISAE Group

Another advantage of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is its collaborative and secure nature. Data is stored on the cloud managed and secured by Dassault Systèmes on French soil,” notes Thomas Zamolo. Thanks to this, teachers and students have easy access to secure storage spaces and can share their work with other members of the ISAE Group.

Now that the platform has been deployed in six other member and partner schools of the ISAE Group (ISAE-ENSMA, ISAE-Supméca, ESTACA, ESTIA, EIGSI and ELISA Aerospace), the teachers plan to take the collaboration even further. “We plan to set up a joint project with the ISAE Group. We could, for example, imagine an engineering project carried out by groups of students from each school, who would work in a complementary way, depending on the specialisation of each school”.
