Arnaud Prost, ESA reserve astronaut and ISAE-SUPAERO alumnus: “I was incredibly lucky to be here”

Fighter pilot and reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), Arnaud Prost returned to his former school on Thursday March 28 to meet 200 secondary school students as part of the ISAE SUPAERO OSE program. It was an opportunity for him to recall the “great memories” of his student experience at ISAE-SUPAERO, his long-standing commitment to the student social outreach program and the “Aquanauts” scheme he set up with OSE l'ISAE-SUPAERO. And in passing, he offers a few words of advice to young people who might dream of following in his footsteps: “Don't let yourself be convinced that one of these paths isn't for you!” A 2017 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Arnaud Prost is among those selected for the ESA Astronaut Class of 2022, alongside Sophie Adenot and Anthea Comellini, both also alumni of the school. They join other illustrious ESA astronauts who have already studied at the school: Thomas Pesquet, Luca Parmitano and Samantha Cristoforetti. Since 1970, ISAE-SUPAERO has contributed to the progress of the space age through its training, research and innovation activities. As the only organization in France to offer degree courses (engineering, master's, specialized master's, doctorate) covering all 22 space-related themes identified by CNES, the Institute offers a royal road to space careers. Feedback: a Latecoere engineer in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories

To strengthen the links between industry and research, more than 10 industrial R&D engineers have been made available to ISAE-SUPAERO as part of the France Relance plan! Cyril Geneste, research engineer at Latecoere, is one of them. Together with Miguel Charlotte, Associate Professor at the Institute, he looks back on this fruitful two-year collaboration. Their work, carried out in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories, focused on the behavior of aircraft door seals, which ensure cabin airtightness. Thanks to the Institute's cutting-edge equipment and academic expertise, Cyril Geneste was able in particular to carry out numerical modeling of seals in order to test their behavior. Students in their 3rdᵉ year of engineering studies were also involved in this work.

The ‘SUPERCAM - Martian Exploration’ educational kit project was initiated by five partners: ISAE-SUPAERO, the Toulouse Academy, CNRS, CNES and Cité de l'espace. Under the guidance and supervision of astrophysicist Sylvestre Maurice, first-year students at ISAE-SUPAERO developed this educational tool to raise awareness of space exploration in classrooms, from sixth form to final year. FRENCH SUPERCAM INSTRUMENT RECORDING THE SOUND OF INGENUITY'S 4th FLIGHT

Located 80 meters from the rover at the moment of take-off, the small helicopter rose to 5 meters above the ground before covering a distance of 133 meters before returning to land where it had taken off from. SuperCam's scientific microphone, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO, recorded the sound emitted by the rotation of the Martian drone's blades during its flight. This sound has a characteristic frequency of 84 Hz, equivalent to the low “E” of a piano or the bass voice of a human being. “This is a big surprise for the whole scientific team,” says Naomi Murdoch, a researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO who is studying the data from the microphone. "Tests carried out in a Martian atmosphere simulator to design this instrument, and our theories of sound propagation, indicated that the microphone would have great difficulty picking up the sounds of the helicopter. Indeed, Mars' thin atmosphere strongly attenuates sound transmission. We needed a bit of luck to record the helicopter from such a distance. We're very pleased to have succeeded in obtaining this recording, which is proving to be a goldmine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere". Developed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and a consortium of CNRS laboratories and its partners, coordinated by CNES, SuperCam's microphone is derived from a consumer model adapted to withstand the Martian environment. It pursues 3 substantial scientific and technical objectives of the Mars 2020 mission: Study the sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks, to gain a better understanding of their mechanical properties. Improving our understanding of atmospheric phenomena (wind turbulence, dust eddies, wind interactions with the rover, and now with the helicopter). Understanding the sound signature of the rover's various movements (robotic arm and mast operations, driving on normal or uneven ground, pump monitoring, etc.). The microphone was first switched on a few hours after Perseverance landed. It recorded the first Martian sounds generated by turbulence in the atmosphere. It is used daily in conjunction with laser rock ablation for chemical analysis of Mars. ABOUT THE MARS 2020 MISSION: NASA is relying on Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the development of the Mars 2020 mission. SuperCam was developed jointly by LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA) and a consortium of laboratories attached to the CNRS, French universities and research establishments. Several Spanish universities, led by the University of Valladolid, are also contributing to the instrument. CNES is responsible to NASA for the French contribution to SuperCam. The instrument is operated alternately from LANL and the French Operations Center for Science and Exploration (FOCSE) at CNES in Toulouse.

From classroom to cockpit: flying activities at ISAE-SUPAERO

Take a video tour of the school's Lasbordes Air Operations Center (COAL). With a fleet of 9 light aircraft, the COAL offers 3 types of activities: - Pilot training to obtain the Private Pilot's License (PPL), which enables students to fly single-engine aircraft. - Practical work directly linked to the school's teaching programs, from flight mechanics to an introduction to flight test techniques for continuing education. - Research into human factors and pilot cognitive mechanisms in real time during flight. At ISAE-SUPAERO, engineering and Master's students are lucky enough to be able to take their pilot's license just a few kilometers from the campus. Several instructors accompany them and train them to fly. All are members of the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Operation Research Department, headed by Valérie Budinger.

Researchers from ISAE-SUPAERO contributed to the success of the first images from ESA's Sentinel 2c observation satellite.

The sound of a Martian dust devil captured by the SuperCam microphone on Perseverance

This video and audio show the results obtained by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover and its SuperCam microphone when recording the sounds of a Martian dust devil passing overhead on 27 September 2021, the 215th Martian day or sol of the mission. The dust devil was 25 metres wide and at least 118 metres high, moving at a speed of approximately 19 km/h. This is the first time such a recording has been made, as capturing a dust devil requires a bit of luck. Indeed, it flew over the rover at a time when all of Perseverance's sensors measuring wind, pressure, temperature and dust, plus the NavigationXXX (Navcam) camera, were running. This allowed scientists to combine sounds, images and atmospheric data. The unique combination of this data, along with atmospheric modelling, enabled researchers to estimate the dimensions of the dust devil. Scientists cannot accurately predict when these vortices will occur. Rovers such as Perseverance and Curiosity monitor them regularly. When scientists notice that they are more frequent at a certain time of day or approaching from a certain direction, they focus their monitoring to try to capture a dust devil with all the sensors at their disposal. > To better understand the video, it shows three rows of images: - the row

ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space organize an international training course on space systems

Twenty engineers from the Peruvian space agency CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) attended a training course in Toulouse designed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space! The aim? To develop their skills in space systems and space missions. The entire program was placed under the academic responsibility of AnnaFederica Urbano, a lecturer and researcher in space systems and launchers at ISAE-SUPAERO. The engineers took part in a preliminary satellite design project. At the end of the five-week course, they all obtained the Certificate of Advanced Studies awarded by ISAE-SUPAERO. For ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space, this experience opens up prospects for future collaborations in training courses of this type for international customers and industrial and institutional partners. Sophie Adenot is flying out on February 11th for a eight-month mission with Crew-12 on the ISS!

Today, the entire ISAE-SUPAERO community is coming together: students, staff, faculty, and alumni are showing their support for Sophie Adenot, European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut and ISAE-SUPAERO alumna, as she embarks on a eight-month mission to the ISS. Sophie is the second French woman, 30 years after Claudie Haigneré, to fly on a long-duration mission. On the ISS, she will conduct around 200 scientific experiments, including 10 French experiments, covering fields such as medicine and materials physics. Have a good flight, Sophie. We will be following you throughout this amazing journey!

ISAE-SUPAERO est un établissement d'enseignement supérieur axé sur la recherche et l'innovation, qui s'engage à concilier excellence scientifique, visibilité académique et proximité avec les objectifs industriels. Ses activités de recherche ont contribué à faire de l'école un leader international non seulement en termes de programme d'ingénierie aérospatiale, mais aussi de programmes de troisième cycle, notamment ses masters (MSc) et ses programmes de doctorat en sciences de l'ingénierie. C'est pourquoi de nombreux acteurs internationaux clés de la recherche rendent visite à leurs homologues de l'ISAE-SUPAERO. Nous avons rencontré Dan Sheeres, professeur émérite de l'université du Colorado et titulaire de la chaire A. Richard Seebass au département des sciences de l'ingénierie aérospatiale Ann et H.J. Smead de l'université du Colorado à Boulder. Les recherches de Dan Scheeres couvrent des sujets allant de l'astrodynamique et de la navigation spatiale à la science planétaire et à la mécanique céleste, et il a publié de nombreux articles dans ces domaines. L'astéroïde 8887 a été baptisé « Scheeres » en reconnaissance de ses contributions à la compréhension scientifique de l'environnement dynamique des astéroïdes. Pendant son séjour à l'ISAE-SUPAERO, le professeur Scheeres et l'équipe des systèmes spatiaux pour les applications planétaires ont collaboré à l'analyse des données DART et au développement de concepts visant à étudier la structure interne des astéroïdes lors de futures missions spatiales. Artery In Microgravity (#AIM), the first student scientific experiment designed and developed in collaboration since 2018 by ISAE-SUPAERO and Polytechnique Turin, was launched on 23 November 2022 by Space X's Dragon cargo ship to the International Space Station (ISS)! Selected by the ESA as part of its ‘Orbit your thesis’ programme, AIM aims to study the behaviour of the heart and its arteries in space, in order to determine whether people with heart problems will one day be able to stay there.

3 questions to Marie Delaroche, 3ᵉ year student and MDRS 293 crew commander

Since February 18, seven ISAE-SUPAERO engineering students have been living a simulated Martian life and carrying out experiments in collaboration with CNES and several research laboratories at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in UTAH (USA)! For the second time, the mission is led by a woman: Marie Delaroche, a passionate #spaceexplorer, who was already part of crew 275 departing in 2023. We asked her 3 questions to find out more about the challenges of this mission and her feelings as #flightcommander! Alongside her, three young women and three young men in their 2ᵉ year of #engineering studies have taken on the roles of astronomer, scientist, botanist, journalist, health worker and onboard engineer. They are all members of the Mars Club ISAE-SUPAERO, a student association for the popularization of science focused on the Red Planet and the missions dedicated to its exploration and study. They are currently experimenting with AI4U, the artificial intelligence that assists astronauts in their daily tasks (environmental measurements, voice recognition, emergency exercises). They are also conducting a science popularization experiment in collaboration with secondary school pupils. Inspired by the film The Martian, in which an astronaut grows potatoes on the Red Planet, the aim of this experiment is to compare plant growth in Martian soil with growth in terrestrial soil! Our programme is designed for junior or senior undergraduate students with a strong interest in space and aviation. A good background in general science, aeronautics, and/or space and aerospace engineering is expected.

Taught entirely in English, no prior knowledge of French is required

The professional mission

The Advanced Master programmes all include a thesis/professional assignment, which can be carried out in a company, over a period of 4 to 6 months, as an internship, fixed-term contract, permanent contract or VIE. Students who receive a bonus during their work placement may, at a later date, be able to contribute towards the cost of their studies.

“Défi Aérospatial Étudiant 2025”: Dassault Aviation Prize awarded to an ISAE-SUPAERO student team

Context and organisation of the project

The ability of private companies and government agencies to carry out manned space flights is an essential lever for future industrial, scientific and exploration missions.

The growth of commercial spaceflight is increasing the demands for safety and comfort, increasing the need for high-lift re-entry vehicles capable of landing on conventional runways. Designed to meet this challenge, OSIRIS adopts an innovative, modular architecture enabling it to carry seven passengers or five tonnes of freight for a week in orbit, or up to six months docked to a space station, while guaranteeing a safe return with moderate g-forces.

The development of this complex system was a challenge for the team, who worked on propulsion, thermal, electronics, mechanics, structures, life support systems, data processing, software, orbital mechanics and mission analysis.

The project took five months to develop, followed by a presentation at ISAE-SUPAERO, then at the Suborbital Day at the Musée de l’Air et de l’Espace (Le Bourget). The design covered most of the sub-systems of a manned space shuttle, exploring the technical details with rigour.

Presentation of the Dassault Aviation Prize

The project culminated at Suborbital Day at Le Bourget, in front of a panel made up of representatives from ESA, Dassault Aviation, ArianeGroup and the European Astronaut Club, the event’s sponsor.

The team attended presentations by twenty other European teams and had the opportunity to discuss the projects they had developed. John McFall, Paralympic sprinter, surgeon and ESA astronaut, took the opportunity to share his experiences and the importance of taking on challenges.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the Dassault Aviation Prize, awarded to the OSIRIS team for the technical quality of its project.

ISAE-SUPAERO congratulates the team on this success and expresses its gratitude to Stéphanie Lizy-Destrez, professor of space systems engineering at ISAE-SUPAERO, for her advice and support throughout the project.

Passionate about science since childhood

Mattéo, who grew up in Lorient, where his passion for science was born: ” I ‘ ve had a passion for science ever since I was a little boy,” he confides. Choosing to do a BAC SSI was ” an obvious choice and an opportunity to take my passion a little further “. His academic career then took another turn, when he was admitted to the Ginette preparatory school (Lycée Sainte-Geneviève), following an application he had made ” without really believing in it “, he admits.

These two years of preparatory classes were a real challenge for him: “I was faced with a difficulty that was quite unprecedented for me. But, buoyed by the spirit of the class and the mutual support between students, I was able to enjoy those years”.

“ The discovery of new disciplines, approached in a very rigorous way, was an essential part of those years “, he adds. He remembers being amazed to unravel the equations explaining how a microwave works, or to discover the Venturi effect.

ISAE-SUPAERO: living your passion

At the end of his two years of preparatory classes and fascinated by the world of aerospace, Mattéo chose ISAE-SUPAERO, attracted by its technical side, its team spirit and its sporting activities (surfing, mountaineering, parachuting): “his preferred choice”, he stresses.

” At ISAE-SUPAERO, my passion for science only grew,” he says. ” I didn’t know where to turn, between fluid mechanics, signal processing, structural dynamics and applied maths. It was there that I finally understood what all those obscure prep school theorems were for – it was a revelation for me.

A gap year rich in knowledge and adventure

In the middle of his second year on the general engineering course at ISAE-SUPAERO, Mattéo began his gap year in two parts, “after three years with his head in the handlebars, to find out in practical terms how the theoretical knowledge he had acquired was being applied “.

He began with a 6-month placement at DGA TA in the Fleet Monitoring department. ” The idea of my placement was to use artificial intelligence algorithms to predict the damage suffered by Mirages 2000 during different flight sequences, and to understand how this damage affected the aircraft’s lifespan “.

Mattéo then went on an academic exchange to Toronto, where he was able to explore new scientific subjects such as robotics, structural dynamics in civil engineering and artificial intelligence, as well as discovering the country. ” I was also able to venture out, during the roaring of the caribou, into vast landscapes that were completely untouched by man ,” he explains.

A trip to South America before returning... by sailboat!

For the remaining six months of his gap year, Mattéo chose to go travelling in South America: ” I think that during these years, travelling, discovering and meeting new people are excellent ways of growing internally, taking a step back and, above all, confronting our way of thinking with reality.

It was an opportunity for him to let himself be carried along by the unexpected, between trekking at high altitude, cycling in the Andes and surfing on the Pacific coast, mostly on his own, “at first with only a rudimentary knowledge of Spanish “.

When it came time to return to France, and considering that his carbon footprint had already been greatly exceeded for his first Atlantic crossing, Mattéo chose to return by sailboat to Lorient.

” I’ve managed to find a sailboat so that I can return to port with three other sailors, heading for Lorient. Here I am, on a voyage lasting more than a month, buffeted by the waves, cut off from the world, in the middle of the ocean“.

It was a hugely formative experience for him, leading him to ” question the notions of progress and the race for profit, and to criticise our Western lifestyle where everything moves at 100 km/h!

A natural choice in^3rd year: “simulations of complex systems” and “signals and systems”.

Back at ISAE-SUPAERO for his 3rdᵉ year, it was natural for Mattéo to choose the “signals and systems” field of expertise and the “simulations of complex systems” field of application.

” It was a natural choice for me. Digital simulation and automatic control are at the crossroads of most of the engineering fields I’m passionate about, ” confides Mattéo.

An award-winning end-of-studies internship

His end-of-studies internship, carried out between ONERA and ISAE-SUPAERO, was a great success.

Mattéo won the regional and then the national André Blanc-Lapierre prize from the SEE for his work on data-based structured identification of the 2D Maxwell equations as a port-Hamiltonian system. His internship also enabled him to take part in the PEGASUS student conference, where he came second. This work also led to participation in an international conference and the publication of a journal article in the COMPEL journal (‘Port-Hamiltonian reduced order modelling of the 2D Maxwell equations’).

Under the supervision of Charles Poussot-Vassal (ONERA) and Denis Matignon (ISAE-SUPAERO), this internship enabled him to discover two fascinating theories: Hamiltonian port systems and the Loewner framework, applied to the 2D Maxwell equations.

” In aerospace engineering, solving Maxwell’s equations is essential for the design and analysis of numerous systems such as antennas, radars and the design of stealth technologies. However, these equations often result in very large models. The calculation time required to solve these systems can be very long (sometimes up to several months of simulation). These models are therefore unusable for iterative design processes.

Model reduction offers a solution for simplifying their complexity while retaining their critical characteristics. To illustrate the capabilities of the method used, the figure shows a snapshot of the results of the time simulations (of the magnetic field H and the electric field E) of the full-order model (FOM) compared with the reduced model, which is 13 times smaller and 100 times faster,” explains Mattéo.

Mattéo was then selected by ISAE-SUPAERO to take part in the PEGASUS student conference, held this year in Prague. This annual event brings together students from Europe’s leading aerospace schools. It was an opportunity for him to meet many students from all over Europe, giving rise to extremely enriching exchanges, both on a scientific and social level.

The conference also included a student competition, based on the evaluation of submitted scientific papers and oral presentations.

Mattéo came second, again in recognition of the work he had carried out during his final year internship.

The award was doubly well deserved, as Mattéo decided to make the return journey from Prague by bike, just as he did when he crossed the Atlantic in a sailing boat!

” Always with a view to reducing my carbon footprint, and given the price of the outward train ticket, I decided to make the return journey by bike. I’d also like to thank the Alumni Association for the grant they awarded me to finance the outward journey.

A thesis to reduce emissions from the aviation sector

A recent graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Mattéo has started a thesis between IMS in Bordeaux and ONERA in Toulouse on fault-tolerant active control of the flutter phenomenon.

” The aim is to design commercial aircraft with high aspect ratios in order to reduce fuel consumption and hence carbon emissions in the aviation sector “, he explains.

Mattéo sees this thesis as a new personal challenge, a way of “questioning the differences in expectations and opinions that sometimes arise between the worlds of research and industry”.

Promoting multidisciplinarity and the growth of the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem

Organised in partnership with IMT Mines Albi-Carmaux, TBS Education, Toulouse INP-ENSEEIHT, theUniversityof Toulouse, the Pôle Universitaire d’Innovation (UT-PUI), as well as the Occitanie Region and Toulouse Tech Transfer, this event aims to meet the growing recruitment needs of startups, while promoting multidisciplinarity and the growth of the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The concept? To provide a unique platform for start-ups incubated in the region’s higher education establishments to meet and recruit talent from other Toulouse schools.

The aim is to match the human resources of higher education institutions with the needs of startups.

Open from 1pm to 5pm, the Occitanie Talent Marketplace will be an opportunity for the public to find out about local start-up projects and job opportunities.

Improving mutual knowledge of skills and talents: Toulouse schools will have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the expertise and talent available in other establishments, facilitating smoother and more effective collaboration.
Strengthening the regional roots of start-ups: By promoting links between start-ups and local resources, the Occitanie Talent Marketplace aims to consolidate the position of companies in the economic fabric of the Occitanie region, thereby stimulating growth and innovation.

OSE inGÉ in a nutshell

OSE inGÉ aims to promote student diversity (social, cultural, territorial and gender) in access to the Grandes Ecoles and the world of engineering. The scheme is aimed at female students and/or those on grants throughout their CPGE course, to help them build their plans for the future and develop their ambitions. It helps to combat self-censorship, build self-confidence and encourage the development of all potential and talent.

The commitments of the scheme

Support students throughout their CPGE years, right up to the competitive entrance exams
Guide them in developing their career plans and aspirations
Help them prepare for the oral exams

Help them to gain a better understanding of the world of the grandes écoles, scientific careers and the world of engineering
Encourage them to discover and exploit their full potential
Help them with the logistics of taking the orals

In 2022-2023: 42 first-year CPGE science students from 3 Toulouse high schools and 42 alumni mentors!

In 2023-2024: 30 second-year CPGE students and 49 first-year CPGE students from 6 high schools in Toulouse, 76 alumni mentors!

In 2024-2025: 44 second-year CPGE students and 70 students from the Toulouse and Montpellier academies, nearly 100 alumni mentors!

In 2025-2026: 60 second-year CPGE students and 70 students from the Toulouse and Montpellier academies, nearly 120 alumni mentors!

Our goal by 2026: to have supported 250 students from the time they start CPGE to the time they pass their competitive entrance exams!

The programme

Tailor-made mentoring

Students receive personalised, one-to-one support from an alumni mentor, depending on their availability and needs. They are supported right up to the competitive entrance exams by an alumnus of one of the schools involved who, thanks to his or her experience, support and listening skills, helps them to answer their questions and confirm their choices. The mentors receive training from experts to provide the best possible support for CPGE students under this scheme.

Immersion courses on campus

During their 2 years of CPGE, students are welcomed on campus four times. These placements are an opportunity to :

discover the campuses of higher education establishments,
talk to former CPGE students and professionals with inspiring backgrounds,
meet their mentors
consolidate their knowledge and
learn how to manage their CPGE years more effectively.

One-off initiatives

Once a year, an evening meeting with professionals is organised at each partner school.

7 partner high schools for 2024-2025

For this new academic year, we are continuing our commitment by opening 70 places in 2025 to first-year CPGE students from 7 schools in the Toulouse and Montpellier academies:

Lycées Déodat de Séverac, Pierre de Fermat and Bellevue in Toulouse,
Lycées Théophile Gautier and Jean Dupuy in Tarbes,
Lycée Joffre in Montpellier,
Lycée Alfonse Daudet in Nîmes

In addition to OSE inGÉ, today OSE l’ISAE-SUPAERO also means every year: 1,100 secondary school pupils benefiting, 36 schools in the Toulouse and Montpellier academies, more than 120 ISAE-SUPAERO students volunteering, more than 2,500 secondary school pupils met, and numerous projects.
