Selected as one of the 10 finalists for the Occitanie region in the very first edition of the “My Apprenticeship in 180 Seconds” public speaking contest, Malaury Fouet—an ISAE-SUPAERO engineering apprentice at Airbus—has just won first prize!

A public speaking competition to promote apprenticeships

“My Apprenticeship in 180 Seconds (MA180s)” is a public speaking competition organised by CFA Midisup, in collaboration with the CFA des Universités Centre-Val de Loireand theANASUP network.

The aim of this project is to showcase higher education apprentices through a challenge:

To describe their apprenticeship experience in 180 seconds flat.

In three minutes, each candidate must give an insight into their journey, their responsibilities, their achievements and what the work-study programme has brought them.

What counts? Eloquence, the ability to explain technical terms and to make the link between your work responsibilities and your work-study programme.

Much more than just a public speaking challenge, this competition is arewarding experience that helps develop key skills such as public speaking, structuring a speech, communication and self-confidence.

Out of the 50 apprentice candidates from across Occitanie, ten finalists were selected back in February to take part in the competition final held on 11 June.

This selection marked the start of several months of intensive preparation, including three coaching sessions led by drama teachers.

Since applications were submitted in January, a great deal of groundwork has been carried out: successive rewrites of the texts, careful consideration of word choice, rhythm, intonation and the intention behind each sentence, all with a view to crafting a performance that is both authentic and impactful.

At the end of the three minutes allotted to present her background, her learning journey and what this experience has brought her – both professionally and personally – it was Malaury Fouet who ultimately won first prize in this very first edition of the competition.

Through my participation in the ‘My Apprenticeship in 180 Seconds’ competition, I wanted to send a strong message about equal opportunities.

By recounting my journey, from my rural home in Ariège to the Airbus hangars, I wanted to show that an apprenticeship can be a fantastic stepping stone to an engineering degree, which can sometimes seem out of reach.

This competition was also an opportunity to pay tribute to the people who believed in me, particularly my maths teacher, Laetitia, who recognised my interest in aeronautics when I was just 11 years old and encouraged me to pursue this path.

This recognition has now strengthened my commitment to secondary school pupils, particularly through the OSE L’ISAE-SUPAERO association, to encourage them to believe in their ambitions and never give up on their dreams.

Finally, this challenge gave me the opportunity to shed light on my day-to-day life as an apprentice at Airbus by explaining, in just three minutes, my responsibilities and how the theoretical knowledge gained at university complements the practical experience acquired in the workplace.

“What stands out most for me is the realisation that a simple message can sometimes open a door.

So if you’re in doubt, if you’re hesitating, if you think a dream is too far out of reach: start dreaming and never stop.”

Induction ceremony for the Class of 2028

Marie-Hélène Baroux, Chairof the ISAE Group andChief Executive of ISAE-SUPAERO, was accompanied by Sawsen Ayari-Pouliquen, Director of Social Affairs and Trainingat GIFAS, and the heads of the schools delivering the programme, to present the ISAE Group badge to the 86 apprentices in the 2028 intake.

Training managers, along with industry representatives and apprenticeship mentors, were present to support the apprentices, whom they will be guiding throughout their training.

For Marie-Hélène Baroux, as well as strengthening the bonds between the apprentices,“this ceremony marks their commitment to their training and should enable them to better understand all the opportunities offered by this programme”.

Qualified engineers currently in employment who had completed this apprenticeship programme shared their experiences, enabling the apprentices to visualise their training journey more clearly and to envisage their professional future a little more clearly.

A training programme supported by GIFAS

Supportedby GIFAS(the French Aerospace Industries Association), this course is run by four of the ISAE Group’s schools: ISAE-SUPAERO (Toulouse), ISAE-ENSMA (Poitiers), ISAE-SUPMÉCA (Paris-Saint-Ouen) and ESTACA (Laval).

ISAE Group: four schools offering the same course

The three-year programme includes, in addition to essential scientific and technical knowledge, modules focusing on the technical and societal challenges facing the engineers of tomorrow, such as sustainable development, people management and innovation.

It also includes an essential practical component, delivered through work-study placements within one or more companies in the aerospace sector, with a minimum of nine weeks spent abroad.

The programme is structured around an identical core curriculum for the first two years, with each school offering a specialisation pathway in^{the third year}: Avionics and On-Board Systems in Toulouse,Energy Systems and Advanced Materials inPoitiers,Logistics, Systems and Aeronautical Production Processes inSaint-Ouen,and Digital Technologies for Production and Eco-Responsible Innovation atthe Laval campus.

The space sector is undergoing profound change driven by New Space, accelerating technological innovation, and environmental challenges. These transformations are leading to rapid changes in the careers and skills required within the industry. In this context, COMETES is launching a platform dedicated to space-related skills, careers, and training.

A national programme to train the space industry’s future talent

COMETES – Skills and Careers for Space is a national training programme launched to meet the growing needs of the French space sector. As the winner of the ‘Skills and Professions of the Future’ call for expressions of interest under the France 2030 plan, it brings together 26 partners from five French regions, including ISAE-SUPAERO.

The programme is based on a collaborative approach involving higher education institutions, research centres, industry players, local authorities and training organisations.

COMETES aims in particular to:

train 11,000 students over five years
create new degree programmes
develop innovative training programmes addressing space sector challenges
raise widespread awareness of careers and opportunities in the sector

A platform dedicated to careers and skills in the space sector

The COMETES website has been designed as a platform for exploring and learning about careers in the space industry and the skills of the future.

In particular, users can:

discover careers in the space sector and New Space
explore the training courses available
gain a better understanding of developments in the sector
find out about the skills in demand

The programme also pays particular attention to sustainable space issues, new space technologies, nanosatellites, space data and systems engineering.

3 questions to Marie Delaroche, 3ᵉ year student and MDRS 293 crew commander

Since February 18, seven ISAE-SUPAERO engineering students have been living a simulated Martian life and carrying out experiments in collaboration with CNES and several research laboratories at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in UTAH (USA)! For the second time, the mission is led by a woman: Marie Delaroche, a passionate #spaceexplorer, who was already part of crew 275 departing in 2023. We asked her 3 questions to find out more about the challenges of this mission and her feelings as #flightcommander! Alongside her, three young women and three young men in their 2ᵉ year of #engineering studies have taken on the roles of astronomer, scientist, botanist, journalist, health worker and onboard engineer. They are all members of the Mars Club ISAE-SUPAERO, a student association for the popularization of science focused on the Red Planet and the missions dedicated to its exploration and study. They are currently experimenting with AI4U, the artificial intelligence that assists astronauts in their daily tasks (environmental measurements, voice recognition, emergency exercises). They are also conducting a science popularization experiment in collaboration with secondary school pupils. Inspired by the film The Martian, in which an astronaut grows potatoes on the Red Planet, the aim of this experiment is to compare plant growth in Martian soil with growth in terrestrial soil! ISAE-SUPAERO est un établissement d'enseignement supérieur axé sur la recherche et l'innovation, qui s'engage à concilier excellence scientifique, visibilité académique et proximité avec les objectifs industriels. Ses activités de recherche ont contribué à faire de l'école un leader international non seulement en termes de programme d'ingénierie aérospatiale, mais aussi de programmes de troisième cycle, notamment ses masters (MSc) et ses programmes de doctorat en sciences de l'ingénierie. C'est pourquoi de nombreux acteurs internationaux clés de la recherche rendent visite à leurs homologues de l'ISAE-SUPAERO. Nous avons rencontré Dan Sheeres, professeur émérite de l'université du Colorado et titulaire de la chaire A. Richard Seebass au département des sciences de l'ingénierie aérospatiale Ann et H.J. Smead de l'université du Colorado à Boulder. Les recherches de Dan Scheeres couvrent des sujets allant de l'astrodynamique et de la navigation spatiale à la science planétaire et à la mécanique céleste, et il a publié de nombreux articles dans ces domaines. L'astéroïde 8887 a été baptisé « Scheeres » en reconnaissance de ses contributions à la compréhension scientifique de l'environnement dynamique des astéroïdes. ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space organize an international training course on space systems

Twenty engineers from the Peruvian space agency CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) attended a training course in Toulouse designed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space! The aim? To develop their skills in space systems and space missions. The entire program was placed under the academic responsibility of AnnaFederica Urbano, a lecturer and researcher in space systems and launchers at ISAE-SUPAERO. The engineers took part in a preliminary satellite design project. At the end of the five-week course, they all obtained the Certificate of Advanced Studies awarded by ISAE-SUPAERO. For ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space, this experience opens up prospects for future collaborations in training courses of this type for international customers and industrial and institutional partners. FRENCH SUPERCAM INSTRUMENT RECORDING THE SOUND OF INGENUITY'S 4th FLIGHT

Located 80 meters from the rover at the moment of take-off, the small helicopter rose to 5 meters above the ground before covering a distance of 133 meters before returning to land where it had taken off from. SuperCam's scientific microphone, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO, recorded the sound emitted by the rotation of the Martian drone's blades during its flight. This sound has a characteristic frequency of 84 Hz, equivalent to the low “E” of a piano or the bass voice of a human being. “This is a big surprise for the whole scientific team,” says Naomi Murdoch, a researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO who is studying the data from the microphone. "Tests carried out in a Martian atmosphere simulator to design this instrument, and our theories of sound propagation, indicated that the microphone would have great difficulty picking up the sounds of the helicopter. Indeed, Mars' thin atmosphere strongly attenuates sound transmission. We needed a bit of luck to record the helicopter from such a distance. We're very pleased to have succeeded in obtaining this recording, which is proving to be a goldmine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere". Developed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and a consortium of CNRS laboratories and its partners, coordinated by CNES, SuperCam's microphone is derived from a consumer model adapted to withstand the Martian environment. It pursues 3 substantial scientific and technical objectives of the Mars 2020 mission: Study the sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks, to gain a better understanding of their mechanical properties. Improving our understanding of atmospheric phenomena (wind turbulence, dust eddies, wind interactions with the rover, and now with the helicopter). Understanding the sound signature of the rover's various movements (robotic arm and mast operations, driving on normal or uneven ground, pump monitoring, etc.). The microphone was first switched on a few hours after Perseverance landed. It recorded the first Martian sounds generated by turbulence in the atmosphere. It is used daily in conjunction with laser rock ablation for chemical analysis of Mars. ABOUT THE MARS 2020 MISSION: NASA is relying on Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the development of the Mars 2020 mission. SuperCam was developed jointly by LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA) and a consortium of laboratories attached to the CNRS, French universities and research establishments. Several Spanish universities, led by the University of Valladolid, are also contributing to the instrument. CNES is responsible to NASA for the French contribution to SuperCam. The instrument is operated alternately from LANL and the French Operations Center for Science and Exploration (FOCSE) at CNES in Toulouse.

The sound of a Martian dust devil captured by the SuperCam microphone on Perseverance

This video and audio show the results obtained by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover and its SuperCam microphone when recording the sounds of a Martian dust devil passing overhead on 27 September 2021, the 215th Martian day or sol of the mission. The dust devil was 25 metres wide and at least 118 metres high, moving at a speed of approximately 19 km/h. This is the first time such a recording has been made, as capturing a dust devil requires a bit of luck. Indeed, it flew over the rover at a time when all of Perseverance's sensors measuring wind, pressure, temperature and dust, plus the NavigationXXX (Navcam) camera, were running. This allowed scientists to combine sounds, images and atmospheric data. The unique combination of this data, along with atmospheric modelling, enabled researchers to estimate the dimensions of the dust devil. Scientists cannot accurately predict when these vortices will occur. Rovers such as Perseverance and Curiosity monitor them regularly. When scientists notice that they are more frequent at a certain time of day or approaching from a certain direction, they focus their monitoring to try to capture a dust devil with all the sensors at their disposal. > To better understand the video, it shows three rows of images: - the row

Fighter pilot and reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), Arnaud Prost returned to his former school on Thursday March 28 to meet 200 secondary school students as part of the ISAE SUPAERO OSE program. It was an opportunity for him to recall the “great memories” of his student experience at ISAE-SUPAERO, his long-standing commitment to the student social outreach program and the “Aquanauts” scheme he set up with OSE l'ISAE-SUPAERO. And in passing, he offers a few words of advice to young people who might dream of following in his footsteps: “Don't let yourself be convinced that one of these paths isn't for you!” A 2017 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Arnaud Prost is among those selected for the ESA Astronaut Class of 2022, alongside Sophie Adenot and Anthea Comellini, both also alumni of the school. They join other illustrious ESA astronauts who have already studied at the school: Thomas Pesquet, Luca Parmitano and Samantha Cristoforetti. Historical Discovery: Mercury Does Indeed Have Electron Radiation Belts

At the start of the 2026 academic year, ENSTA and ISAE-SUPAERO are launching a new engineering course dedicated to advanced engineering and complex systems for the strategic fields of defence and security and, more generally, the technological sovereignty of dual and civil industries.

Designed in partnership with the manufacturers of the Defence Technological and Industrial Base (BITD) and the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA), this course aims to equip France and Europe with the scientific and technical skills that are essential to maintaining their strategic autonomy and supporting innovation in sensitive sectors, both civil and military.

Accredited by the Commission des titres d’ingénieur (CTI), this three-year course is mainly accessible via the Mines-Télécom competitive entrance exam. It prepares multidisciplinary engineers – civil and military – capable of meeting scientific and industrial challenges in key sectors: cyber security, artificial intelligence, naval engineering, land engineering, aeronautical and space engineering.

A joint engineering degree: a first in France

This unique programme leads to a prestigious engineering degree awarded jointly by ENSTA and ISAE-SUPAERO – an innovation supported by the CTI, industry and the French Ministry of Defence. The aim is to train around a hundred engineers each year, including 50 military IETA engineers (engineers for armament studies and techniques), capable of designing, evaluating and piloting complex high-performance systems in France and abroad.

A springboard to strategic careers

Future graduates will work in sectors at the heart of the challenges of sovereignty, security and high technology. They will have responsibilities ranging from research and development to the management of innovative projects, in demanding and often international environments.

Highly qualified engineers

These men and women, both military and civilian, are trained to design, develop and pilot the most complex, high-performance systems for all types of environment, seeking technological superiority and breakthrough innovations.

A project supported by two Grandes Ecoles

Engineering degree accredited by the CTI (Commission du titre d'ingénieur)
2 student statuses to choose from: student (civilian) or student military engineer (IETA corps: engineer for armament studies and techniques)
3 years of training after bac+2 (bac+5)
Admissions : 99 places, mainly through the Mines-Télécom competitive entrance examination after scientific preparatory classes (CPGE)
3 work placements, representing 9 to 10 months' experience
International mobility ofat least 16 weeks
Common ^1st year on the ENSTA campus in Brest
3 specialisation options, on 3 campuses: naval and land systems, on the ENSTA Brest campus; cyber and AI, on the ENSTA Paris-Saclay campus; aeronautics and space on the ISAE-SUPAERO Toulouse campus.

Focus on the "Aeronautics and Space" option at ISAE-SUPAERO

Offered in semesters 4 and 5, the Aeronautics & Space option, taught at ISAE-SUPAERO, will train engineers capable of mastering all aeronautics and space technologies, from the design of architectures to the operational integration of the most advanced systems.

The option covers aeronautics, space systems and launchers as well as missiles, drones and helicopters. Combining fundamental sciences, applied engineering and design projects, it prepares students to meet the major technological challenges associated with defence, security and the major aeronautics and space industries.

From classroom to cockpit: flying activities at ISAE-SUPAERO

Take a video tour of the school's Lasbordes Air Operations Center (COAL). With a fleet of 9 light aircraft, the COAL offers 3 types of activities: - Pilot training to obtain the Private Pilot's License (PPL), which enables students to fly single-engine aircraft. - Practical work directly linked to the school's teaching programs, from flight mechanics to an introduction to flight test techniques for continuing education. - Research into human factors and pilot cognitive mechanisms in real time during flight. At ISAE-SUPAERO, engineering and Master's students are lucky enough to be able to take their pilot's license just a few kilometers from the campus. Several instructors accompany them and train them to fly. All are members of the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Operation Research Department, headed by Valérie Budinger.

To strengthen the links between industry and research, more than 10 industrial R&D engineers have been made available to ISAE-SUPAERO as part of the France Relance plan! Cyril Geneste, research engineer at Latecoere, is one of them. Together with Miguel Charlotte, Associate Professor at the Institute, he looks back on this fruitful two-year collaboration. Their work, carried out in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories, focused on the behavior of aircraft door seals, which ensure cabin airtightness. Thanks to the Institute's cutting-edge equipment and academic expertise, Cyril Geneste was able in particular to carry out numerical modeling of seals in order to test their behavior. Students in their 3rdᵉ year of engineering studies were also involved in this work.

ISAE-SUPAERO and the Spaceflight Institute join forces to train the manned flight experts of tomorrow!

On 29 July 2025, ISAE-SUPAERO and the Spaceflight Institute signed a partnership agreement for the joint creation of a 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭.

This new one-semester programme aims to train a new generation of space sector professionals, combining academic excellence and operational expertise.

Aimed at students, recent graduates and professionals who are retraining or working, this top-class course will offer an in-depth understanding of the technical, human and organisational issues involved in manned flight. The aim is to offer a unique course on an international scale, as close as possible to the needs of the current and future space industry.

Delivered in English by European experts from industry and research, the programme begins with an overview of the human spaceflight sector, before moving on to key topics such as the space environment, systems architecture, human factors and physiology, operations and robotics, space science and defence issues. It provides a comprehensive operational understanding in line with the real needs of the aerospace industry.

The official signing took place on the ISAE-SUPAERO campus in the presence of Marie-Hélène BAROUX, Director General of the Institute, and Ugo Bonnet, CEO of the Spaceflight Institute.

Context and organisation of the project

The ability of private companies and government agencies to carry out manned space flights is an essential lever for future industrial, scientific and exploration missions.

The growth of commercial spaceflight is increasing the demands for safety and comfort, increasing the need for high-lift re-entry vehicles capable of landing on conventional runways. Designed to meet this challenge, OSIRIS adopts an innovative, modular architecture enabling it to carry seven passengers or five tonnes of freight for a week in orbit, or up to six months docked to a space station, while guaranteeing a safe return with moderate g-forces.

The development of this complex system was a challenge for the team, who worked on propulsion, thermal, electronics, mechanics, structures, life support systems, data processing, software, orbital mechanics and mission analysis.

The project took five months to develop, followed by a presentation at ISAE-SUPAERO, then at the Suborbital Day at the Musée de l’Air et de l’Espace (Le Bourget). The design covered most of the sub-systems of a manned space shuttle, exploring the technical details with rigour.

The project culminated at Suborbital Day at Le Bourget, in front of a panel made up of representatives from ESA, Dassault Aviation, ArianeGroup and the European Astronaut Club, the event’s sponsor.

The team attended presentations by twenty other European teams and had the opportunity to discuss the projects they had developed. John McFall, Paralympic sprinter, surgeon and ESA astronaut, took the opportunity to share his experiences and the importance of taking on challenges.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the Dassault Aviation Prize, awarded to the OSIRIS team for the technical quality of its project.

ISAE-SUPAERO congratulates the team on this success and expresses its gratitude to Stéphanie Lizy-Destrez, professor of space systems engineering at ISAE-SUPAERO, for her advice and support throughout the project.

ISAE-SUPAERO renews cooperation agreements with ITA and São Paulo institutions

Marie-Hélène Baroux, Director General of ISAE-SUPAERO, emphasised the strategic importance of this partnership:

“This collaboration with the ITA and the institutions of São Paulo is an essential lever for developing innovative projects in key areas such as artificial intelligence applied to aeronautics, sustainability and new technologies. It offers our students and researchers invaluable opportunities to become fully involved in the challenges of tomorrow’s aerospace sector”.

This renewal brings with it a number of important commitments:

For students, it guarantees an expansion of exchange programmes, with a desire to further enrich exchanges between France and Brazil.
For researchers, it means greater openness to innovative collaborative projects, particularly in areas of the future such as artificial intelligence applied to aeronautics, environmental sustainability and new materials.
For ISAE-SUPAERO, it is an additional lever to strengthen its international attractiveness and confirm its major role in training engineers capable of meeting the challenges of the sector.

For more than twenty years, ISAE-SUPAERO and ITA have been developing joint programmes, in particular the BRAFITEC double degree, which enables students to acquire unique international and bicultural expertise. This renewal bears witness to the vitality and relevance of this cooperation in a global context marked by major technological and environmental challenges.

This cooperation is also part of a strong scientific dynamic between France and the State of São Paulo, with almost 10,000 joint publications in six years, demonstrating effective international synergy.

” Scientific and technological cooperation between the two regions is strong and growing. Over the last six years, French and Paulo researchers have jointly published 9,800 scientific articles, which represents 52% of all articles published as part of international collaborations during this period “, emphasised Marco Antonio Zago, President of the FAPESP.

The renewal of the agreements illustrates the strength of this transatlantic scientific cooperation, which continues to develop and diversify. It also testifies to the commitment and common vision shared by the participants in FAPESP Week France 2025, including Marco Antonio Zago, President of FAPESP, Marie-Hélène Baroux, Director General of ISAE-SUPAERO, Vahan Agopyan, Secretary for Science, Technology and Innovation of the State of São Paulo, and Odile Rauzy, Rector of Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier University, who summed up the challenge: ” Together, moving in the same direction, we will be stronger at a crucial time for science “.
