Meet Fabin Delcan

What is your background?

I first went to a state secondary school in Pau, Saint-John Perse, before entering the MPSI-MP preparatory school at Camille Jullian, a small preparatory school with only one MP and one PC. There weren’t many people admitted to the Grandes Mines, but I had some excellent teachers and some very good friends!

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO? What do you think are the school's strengths?

Like many of us, ISAE-SUPAERO was my goal even before I started preparatory school. As the son of an air traffic controller and private pilot, I was quickly immersed in the world of aviation. In my little prep school, I hung in there and gave everything I had to get into my dream school.

Like many people at ISAE-SUPAERO, I was also admitted to higher-ranked schools, but I made this choice for several reasons:

Apart from Polytechnique, almost all the grandes écoles are the same in the professional world. The key is to differentiate yourself.
I wanted to do mechanics and physics in particular, and I got what I wanted! I was particularly interested in aviation and space, and it’s the best school in France in this field.
I was president of the rocket club and a member of OSE, as well as rowing, baseball, and poker clubs.
The many academic opportunities, in France and abroad.
Going to the same school as Thomas Pesquet is quite something, isn’t it?

Can you tell us about your double degree with X-HEC? Why did you make this choice?

After just over a year at ISAE-Supaero, I decided to be more than an engineer. I chaired the Institute’s large rocket club (+120 people) and got a taste for project management and steering.

The double degree takes place over two years:

A first year at École Polytechnique in 3A, where you can choose any subject (PA for friends) and take an entrepreneurial certificate. You also do a third-year internship like the Xs, usually in a startup.
Then you go on to the MSc X-HEC Entrepreneur, a very practical master’s programme, with little theory and lots of guidance to help you launch a business. The classes are made up of one third engineers, one third business profiles, and one third from other backgrounds, which encourages the formation of multidisciplinary teams.

I wasn’t born an entrepreneur, but I want to work in a dynamic environment, without fixed positions or rigid hierarchies. This double degree is the best option for me: it allows me to quickly gain experience in technical and business management while taking on a fascinating challenge: designing, managing a growing team, finding a market, and convincing investors!

What areas and subjects have you chosen for your third year?

As part of my double degree, I did my third year at École Polytechnique. I chose the Mechanical PA, coupled with an entrepreneurial certificate. I wanted to acquire a solid grounding in mechanics so that I could design autonomous systems such as drones. Mechanics is a bit of a catch-all area in engineering. I already had some knowledge of software and automatic control, which I wanted to complement with a mastery of tools and methods in fluid and structural mechanics to better understand the challenges of design and prototyping. As for the entrepreneur certificate, it was a natural choice to gain experience before my final year in entrepreneurship.

What are your career plans?

I’m not completely sure about my future yet, but what motivates me is the startup environment, both its dynamism and its challenges. I hope to be able to found or join a very technical start-up, probably in the field of drones. But it all depends on the people I meet next year: a startup is above all a human adventure and requires a close-knit team!

A word about life in Toulouse and more particularly on campus?

Toulouse is great fun! Most of us live on our amazing campus, including during weekends, which means we can organise lots of community projects and events.

I know that the community aspect is often overlooked when choosing a school, but on a day-to-day basis it has a real impact. Getting involved in an association means making new contacts and developing personally and professionally. At ISAE-SUPAERO, there are significantly more associations per student than on the Plateau de Saclay, with many technical and aeronautical associations run by real enthusiasts.

If you had any words for students taking the CCMP?

Whether this is a huge challenge for you or a formality, bear in mind that the questions are often very theoretical: take the time to go into the subjects in depth!

What was your academic background before joining ISAE-SUPAERO?

I studied at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, where I obtained a bachelor’s degree in physics and chemistry in 2006, followed by a master’s degree in ‘Materials, technology and components’ in 2008, in partnership with the CEA and the University of Paris-Saclay. This multidisciplinary training gave me a solid grounding in engineering sciences applied to industry and innovative technologies.

Did you already have professional experience before the Advanced Master®?

Yes. I wanted to join the army and I passed an officer’s competitive examination to join the French Army. I did a year’s training at the École spéciale militaire in Saint-Cyr, followed by a year at the École du génie in Angers.

I was posted to the 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment^(17e RGP) in Montauban, where I served for 4 years as an engineer combat section leader (rank of lieutenant).

I then joined the initial training centre for non-commissioned members of the 11th parachute brigade, as assistant officer, then unit commander (rank of captain), training more than 300 recruits a year. I was again transferred to the 17th RGP where I held various positions at the regimental headquarters (rank of commander): deputy to the head of operations, head of the administrative and budget section, then head of the training office.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO for your Advanced Master®?

In 2023, I passed the internal competitive examination for the Army’s technical diploma, which led to me being posted to the Centre d’Enseignement Militaire Supérieur Terre (CEMS-T) for high-level training within the Enseignement Militaire Supérieur Scientifique et Technique (EMSST). As part of this, I chose to do the IEM Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO to learn about project management, innovation and emerging technologies, directly related to my future job in the army’s technical section, in charge of armament programmes.

How did you hear about our Advanced Master® programme?

Army officers are regularly enrolled at ISAE-SUPAERO via the EMSST (MS APM, SPAPS and IEVEx in particular).

What specific skills or knowledge have you come to acquire in this programme?

The Advanced Master® enabled me to acquire a complete vision of entrepreneurship: from identifying the problem to turning a solution into reality, through ideation, field surveys, prototyping and the strategy for bringing a product to market. I was also able to deepen my understanding of business innovation and familiarise myself with the latest technologies (AI, hydrogen, 3D printing, etc.). The courses in project management, management, marketing, finance and communication will be invaluable to me in interacting with the defence industry in my future role.

What subjects, projects, challenges or experiences have particularly impressed you during your training?

The most memorable project was undoubtedly the PIE Project, the common thread running through the AM. In teams of 3 or 4 students, we followed the entire entrepreneurial process: Identifying a problem, Field surveys, Ideation, Definition of a business model, Marketing strategy, Prototyping, etc. This applied project synthesises all the skills acquired during the AM programme. We also had the opportunity to take it further as part of our work placement, when we joined ISAE-SUPAERO’s InnovSpace to incubate our start-up. An academic project that became a reality!

In your opinion, what are the main advantages of the programme that you have followed?

The strengths of this Master’s programme are numerous: lecturers from the biggest industrial groups (Airbus, Thales, Safran, CEA, etc.), a wealth of content covering innovation, finance, strategy, technology, entrepreneurship – intrapreneurship and cutting-edge technical resources (InnovSpace, Aérothèque). All this in a demanding and stimulating academic environment, with personalised coaching sessions with experts in the development of our PIE project. Academic excellence and a wide variety of courses are key features of this AM.

How would you describe student life at ISAE-SUPAERO?

The campus is pleasant and well served (bus, bike, car). It offers excellent sports facilities (swimming pool, weight room) and a dynamic student life, punctuated by numerous events (conferences, activities, etc.). The career centre also offers a wide range of events for students.

What are your career plans?

As a career officer, I am continuing my commitment to the army’s technical section, which is responsible for armaments programmes, working with the DGA and DTIB manufacturers.

How will your Advanced Master® prepare you to achieve these goals?

The programme enabled me to acquire a solid understanding of the industrial and entrepreneurial world and its project management, innovation and decision-making logics. This will be a real asset when it comes to communicating effectively with our industrial partners on future projects.

What would you say to a future student who is hesitating about joining an ISAE-SUPAERO Advanced Master®?

Joining an Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO is much more than acquiring new skills: It is living a rich, stimulating and concrete human and intellectual experience. Whether you come from the professional world or are a student, you will find here a demanding training programme, but also a real springboard for developing your career. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone: You’ll grow from it.

Any advice for a successful Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO?

Give it your all, don’t be afraid to try, to fail, and then bounce back! It’s through experimentation that you learn the most, especially about yourself. It’s a great way of discovering so many things, and maybe even discovering that you have the soul of an entrepreneur!

What was your academic background before coming to ISAE-SUPAERO?

I graduated from ENSICA in 1998. ENSICA has since merged with SUPAERO to form ISAE-SUPAERO.

Did you already have professional experience before the Advanced Master®?

I began my professional career in pre-project studies at ONERA, then in system validation at MBDA, before working for over 20 years in the automotive industry at PSA Peugeot Citroën. This enabled me to develop skills in a variety of areas, including project management, software development, after-sales, and purchasing.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO for your Advanced Master®?

Looking for new challenges, I wanted to return to the aeronautical sector. First of all, I wanted to update my technical skills in this field. There were several options open to me. Rather than go for certification, I decided to take a Advanced Master® in Aeronautics. It was also a personal challenge to prove to myself that even after 50, you can still learn and get a post-master’s degree. Being an alumnus of ISAE, ISAE-SUPAERO was the obvious choice.

What specific skills or knowledge have you come to acquire in this MS?

When I was a student, I chose modules focusing on propulsion and fluid mechanics.

I came here to ‘relearn’ the technical side of what an aircraft is, and in my experience maintenance is an excellent way of getting a global view of aeronautics and its ecosystem.

What subjects, projects, challenges, or experiences have particularly impressed you during your course?

First of all, this master’s degree enabled me to cover the entire aircraft perimeter (architecture, structure, systems and engines, avionics, etc.) and refresh the technical skills I had acquired previously.

Subsequently, it was the subjects that I hadn’t developed much when I was doing my initial training that really stood out for me. I’m thinking of airworthiness certification, the RAMS process, and predictive maintenance with an introduction to Big Data.

The course was also very rewarding from a personal point of view. I particularly enjoyed this inter-generational and multi-cultural class. I rubbed shoulders with people from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds, from both civilian and military backgrounds.

In your opinion, what are the main advantages of the AM that you have followed?

Academic excellence and contributions from industry professionals.

What are your career plans?

There are a wide variety of jobs in the aerospace industry (production, logistics, quality, R&D, purchasing, projects, support). I’ve had the opportunity to do some of these jobs in the automotive industry. I’d like to move into project or purchasing management.

This could be with an aircraft manufacturer, an aeronautical equipment supplier, or an MRO.

How will your Advanced Master® prepare you to achieve these goals?

The automotive and aerospace industries are similar in terms of their organisation and processes (lean management, agile loops, etc.). It is not uncommon to come across people working in one environment with professional experience in the other.

The gaps inherent in the aeronautical business (certification, RAMS, customer services, etc.) are developed in this Advanced Master®. It gives you a 360° view of the aeronautical world.

This reinforces my confidence in the success of my professional project.

Have you completed a work placement or assignment as part of your AM?

Yes, I’m currently doing a work placement at ATR – aerostructure on the treatment of in-service corrosion.

His Advice

What would you say to a future student who is hesitant about choosing an ISAE-SUPAERO Advanced Master®?

ISAE-SUPAERO’s Advanced Master® enable students to acquire or deepen their knowledge of aeronautics and are supported by professionals working in major aeronautical companies. They are recognised in France and abroad.

Any advice for a successful Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO?

The Advanced Master® gives you the opportunity to delve deeper into subjects from a professional and intellectual standpoint.

The programme is dense and very diverse, and you have to memorise a lot of concepts. But I think you have to look beyond the grades. It’s not an end in itself, but a measure of what you’ve learned. The most important thing is to try to develop a spirit of analysis with regard to technical subjects: To take a step back and try to understand the choice of a design or the reasons for a methodology taught and why not challenge the speakers.

Approaching courses with this mindset is a guarantee of success.

I did an engineering degree at ISAE-ENSMA specialising in aeronautical structures after completing a CPGE in Ajaccio.

Did you already have professional experience before the Advanced Master®?

I only did a placement at Safran Helicopter Engines in experimental vibration behaviour in engine testing.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO for your Advanced Master®?

ISAE SUPAERO is the only school able to offer training in flight testing.

How did you hear about our Advanced Master® programme?

During the ISAE group’s mobility week, I attended courses at ISAE-SUPAERO and came across a brochure listing all the AM. I had a basic interest in flight testing, so I became interested in the TAS AERO FTE course and consolidated this interest by getting the opinion of a former student of the course who also happened to be from ISAE-ENSMA.

What specific skills or knowledge have you come to acquire in this AM?

I’ve already had a lot of experience in the technical side of aeronautics, and I’ve already done a work placement in testing, so I came here to learn about flight testing first and foremost, as well as the skills associated with it, such as planning flight tests, analysing them and carrying them out.

What subjects, projects, challenges or experiences have particularly impressed you during your training?

All the flights offered during the TAS AERO FTE training course were outstanding. On one hand, thanks to the discussions with the pilots (Stéphane and Étienne, whom I salute and thank), their support was touching and we really created a bond with them, as they shared their experience and expertise with us. This made us realise that although the operational and technical worlds are different on paper, their link lies in the discipline of flight testing. On the other hand, this link also allows us to really understand what we’re learning, which is extremely gratifying.

In your opinion, what are the main advantages of the AM that you have followed?

The main assets of the TAS AERO FTE course are the quality of the lessons given, the teachers are very attentive and won’t hesitate to give private lessons in their spare time if they need to. I’d like to pay special tribute to Mr Éric Poquillon for this, even though we may have taken up too much of his free time… (Sorry)

What are your career plans?

My goal is to become an airline pilot. For me, being an aeronautical engineer is just a back-up plan that would allow me to work in a field that I love if ever the pilot profession closes its doors to me.

How will your Advanced Master® prepare you to achieve these goals?

This Advanced Master® gives me the key knowledge and skills to better understand the systems I’ll be working with as a pilot. On the other hand, it allows me to move into an area that interests me as an engineer, which is flight testing and operations.

Have you completed a work placement or assignment as part of your AM?

Yes, I did a 6-month internship at ATR in the pilot training centre. During this work placement, I wrote a manual of ATR recommendations for pilot training aimed at training organisations. This manual is in line with the new CBTA (Competency based training assessment) and EBT (Evidence based Training) training standards, in order to comply with ICAO and EASA regulations. This course is fascinating because I get to talk to pilots every day, whether it’s the instructors with their wealth of experience or the trainee pilots taking their type rating, who help me to be more intelligent.

What would you say to a future student who is hesitating about joining an ISAE-SUPAERO Advanced Master®?

If you are hesitating for financial reasons, it is always possible to work after your degree and join the course a few years later. Nothing is limiting. If you’re unsure about what you’re going to learn, you can always ask someone who has done the Advanced Master® on LinkedIn or elsewhere.

Any advice for a successful Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO?

Teamwork is essential and there’s no point in going it alone.

What was your academic background before joining ISAE-SUPAERO?

I graduated from INSA Toulouse with an engineering degree in computer science and networks, specialising in distributed systems and big data. I also spent a semester as an Erasmus exchange student in Jyväskylä, Finland, a very enriching human and intercultural experience.

Did you already have professional experience before the Advanced Master®?

Yes, I worked for three years as a Data Engineer for Airbus Commercial Aircraft, in a critical production environment. This experience enabled me to develop solid expertise in the architecture of data pipelines in the cloud and to take on the role of technical reference.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO for your Advanced Master®?

I wanted to acquire a more theoretical and scientific understanding of artificial intelligence in order to make the transition to a Data Scientist position. The ISAE-SUPAERO ITMA programme, at the interface between advanced engineering and concrete industrial cases, seemed to me the ideal way to develop my profile towards applied research issues in data science and AI. ISAE-SUPAERO’s academic reputation and its roots in the aerospace sector were also decisive factors.

What specific skills or knowledge have you come to acquire in this AM?

I came to deepen my understanding of the mathematical foundations of AI, to learn how to design complex models (based in particular on deep learning), and to develop my ability to apply these techniques to industrial cases such as surrogate models, simulation or data analysis.

What subjects, projects, challenges or experiences have particularly impressed you during your training?

The courses on generative models and deep neural networks were particularly memorable. In particular, the workshop where we coded our own version of a GPT-type model gave me a better understanding of how large language models work, from theory to practice. I also learnt a lot during the collaborative projects with industry, where we had to respond to concrete problems by mobilising cross-disciplinary skills, from modelling to the deployment of solutions.

In your opinion, what are the main advantages of the AM that you have followed?

This Advanced Master® offers a perfect balance between academic excellence and industrial application. The courses are taught in English by experts in the field, the projects are ambitious, and the school’s network is a real springboard. The multicultural environment and personalised support are also strong points.

Describe an outstanding experience or project that you carried out during your AM.

My apprenticeship at Airbus Defence and Space was a very formative project. I worked on surrogate models to simulate thermal phenomena in space, combining artificial intelligence and physical modelling. It was there that I discovered the value of PINNs (Physics-Informed Neural Networks), which made me want to explore in greater depth the links between physical modelling and artificial intelligence.

How would you describe student life at ISAE-SUPAERO?

The environment is very stimulating, human and caring. Students come from all over the world, creating an open and dynamic atmosphere. The school also places great emphasis on individual support, whether for career planning or academic success.

What are your career plans?

In the short term, I’d like to gain professional experience with a high scientific value, either through a CIFRE PhD to deepen my knowledge in artificial intelligence or through a VIE in a technologically stimulating environment. In the medium term, I’d like to move into a position in research and development (R&D), in a context where disruptive innovation is at the heart of projects, ideally in the aeronautics or space industry.

How will your Advanced Master® prepare you to achieve these goals?

The AIBT Advanced Master® gave me a solid grounding in artificial intelligence, combining academic rigour with concrete industrial use cases. It gave me a deeper understanding of advanced techniques such as neural networks, optimisation methods and digital twins, while developing an applied scientific approach. This training has prepared me for the complex challenges I will face in the future.

Have you completed a work placement or assignment as part of your AM?

Yes, I did my apprenticeship as a Data Scientist at Airbus Defence and Space, in the Data Analytics department. My assignment concerned the development of surrogate models for the thermal simulation of satellites, exploring in particular approaches based on neural networks and physics informed neural networks (PINNs). This project enabled me to put into practice what I had learnt in the Advanced Master® in a concrete industrial context with high technical stakes.

What would you say to a future student who is hesitating about joining an ISAE-SUPAERO Advanced Master®?

For me, joining the Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO was an important decision for the rest of my career. I found a stimulating, demanding but caring environment, which enabled me to gain expertise and clarity about my career aspirations. The programme offered me a unique opportunity to explore artificial intelligence with scientific rigour, while maintaining a strong link with industrial issues. It’s a rare opportunity to learn from top experts, researchers and industrialists. If you’re curious and motivated, go for it!

Any advice for a successful Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO?

Be curious and don’t be afraid to ask questions, even (and especially) when you haven’t yet mastered the subject. The Advanced Master® is intense, but it’s also a unique opportunity to rub shoulders with experts and build a solid foundation. Take the time to choose your work-study placement or your end-of-study project carefully, because that’s where you’ll put what you’ve learned into practice and confirm your professional orientation.

What was your academic background before joining ISAE-SUPAERO?

My academic career began with a bachelor’s degree in chemical sciences, which led to a master’s degree in chemistry and materials science under a sandwich course at the Université Paris-Saclay. This was combined with work experience as a production engineer in a chemical industry. My passion for aeronautics then made me want to combine materials science with the study and design of aeronautical structures. That’s why I chose this Advanced Master®.

Did you already have professional experience before the Advanced Master®?

Yes, before this Advanced Master®, I gained two years’ experience as an apprentice production engineer in a chemical industry. My main task was to identify the causes of a defect in the finished product. To do this, I was the link between the production team and the quality department.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO for your Advanced Master®?

I chose to pursue a Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO because of its strong focus on the aeronautical sector, which enabled me to deepen the link between materials science and aeronautical applications.

What specific skills or knowledge have you come to acquire in this AM?

By doing this AM, I wanted to acquire skills in structural calculations and mechanics. All these aspects were lacking in my previous courses.

What subjects, projects, challenges or experiences have particularly impressed you during your training?

During the course, we had to work on a 6-month project in a group of 9. This project was particularly memorable because it brought together people from a wide variety of backgrounds. So we had to learn to adapt to each other’s working methods, identify our strengths and areas for improvement, and work together effectively. The aim of the project was to use CAD software to design the interior of a hydrogen-powered aircraft. It was a real challenge, aimed at rethinking the standards of aviation as we know it.

In your opinion, what are the main advantages of the AM that you have followed?

This AM offers a number of advantages. Firstly, it benefits from the recognised academic excellence of ISAE-Supaero. The courses are taught by professionals from the sector, which brings a concrete and enriching dimension to the training. What’s more, we have an international intake made up of a small number of students, which makes it easier to forge links and discover new cultures.

What are your career plans?

I hope to work in the aeronautical industry, as a methods or test engineer, which would enable me to link my theoretical knowledge of structures with the industrial aspect.

How will your Advanced Master® prepare you to achieve these goals?

The Advanced Master AES enabled me to develop my technical skills while developing an in-depth understanding of the industrial requirements of the sector. This training has given me the tools to make the link between the theoretical modelling of structures and their practical application. Working as a methods or test engineer gives me the ideal opportunity to put these skills into practice, by helping to improve industrial processes and validate aircraft structural performance.

Did you do a work placement or assignment as part of your AM?

As part of my Advanced Master®, I did an internship at Airbus in Toulouse as an industrial assembly engineer. This experience enabled me to develop project management skills as well as technical expertise in drilling processes.

Following my Baccalauréat Scientifique at the Lycée Pierre Bourdieu, I entered the PCSI preparatory class at the Lycée Pierre de Fermat in 2019.

After two years of preparatory classes, I joined the ENSEIRB-MATMECA (Bordeaux INP), Electronics stream, from 2021. At this school I was lucky enough to be in charge of the aerospace association, which enabled me to work on my first student space projects (experimental rocket, sounding balloon, nanosatellite).

I then did my final year of engineering studies at ENSEEIHT (Toulouse INP), in the Systems Integration stream, to specialise in the areas of electronics that I enjoy. These years of training were accompanied by various work placements, notably at EREMS (Toulouse), OHB (Munich) and finally CNES (Toulouse), during which I had the opportunity to work on a wide range of space projects.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO for your Advanced Master®?

ISAE-SUPAERO is very attractive to students who want to go into the space industry. I wanted to complete my specialised electronics training with a full year’s teaching on space projects, so the TAS ASTRO Advanced Master® was an obvious choice for me. I applied in 2024 and was delighted to be selected for this high-quality course.

I’ve always followed the news about ISAE-SUPAERO. Social networks (LinkedIn) and the school’s website gave me all the information I needed about the Advanced Master® programme.

What specific skills or knowledge have you come to acquire in this AM?

I went into this Advanced Master® with a clear idea: To acquire solid and varied knowledge of space projects and space-related professions. As it happens, the TAS ASTRO programme offers a rich and diverse range of courses on all these subjects.

What subjects, projects, challenges or experiences have particularly impressed you during your training?

The TAS ASTRO course has the advantage of being comprehensive from both a theoretical and a practical point of view.

I really enjoyed the courses on Orbital Mechanics, Communications, Space Systems and Manned Spaceflight. Overall, all the courses in this Advanced Master® are very interesting and linked to each other: The skills acquired in one are very often useful later in the year. I find this link between subjects very interesting.

This coherence is reinforced by a common thread: the Integrated Team Project (ITP), a year-long project. This project involves the whole class (divided into teams of 6 for different parts of the project) designing a complex space system. With the class of 2024/2025, we designed a system of systems that would enable a space station to operate. This station can be linked to Earth by two shuttles, which are themselves transported by a launcher. My team and I have concentrated on the training and education of astronauts.

In your opinion, what are the main advantages of the AM that you have followed?

The Advanced Master® TAS ASTRO is an excellent course, both in academic and human terms. The teaching is of the highest quality, with unique guest lecturers (researchers, space professionals, pioneers and key figures in the history of French and European space).

ISAE-SUPAERO offers a very pleasant working environment, with rooms dedicated to Advanced Master, a superb library and numerous sports facilities.

Describe an outstanding experience or project that you carried out during your AM.

Alongside this Advanced Master®, I’m taking part in a project involving students from ISAE-SUPAERO and the Toulouse National Veterinary School.

Our ATLAS (Assisting Tool for LAparotomy Sutures in Space) project aims to design solutions for carrying out surgeries during future long-duration space flights (missions to the Moon or Mars). We were lucky enough to be selected by CNES to test our experiment during a 0g flight aboard Novespace’s AIRBUS ZEROG.

We will therefore be able to carry out our experiment during a weightlessness flight in October 2025, during which two members of our team will be able to fly! In the meantime, you can follow our news on all our social networks (ATLAS Parabole).

We are being assisted in this project by teacher-researchers from our two establishments. This ongoing project is made possible by funding from the Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO and the AEAENVT.

How would you describe student life at ISAE-SUPAERO?

ISAE-SUPAERO also has the advantage of a rich student life. The various associations have their own premises with excellent social and sports facilities. The school is a great place to develop a fulfilling student life by getting involved in a wide range of areas: student associations, technical associations, cultural associations, etc. There is a wide choice to suit all tastes!

What are your career plans?

I’ve always had a passion for astronomy and space telescopes. In my final year of secondary school, I realised that I needed to build a career around this passion, in order to make my dream a reality.
It hasn’t always been easy, and academic life sometimes requires you to stay motivated to achieve your goals. Building a career plan is far from being a smooth ride: It has to be done step by step.

With this in mind, I did an internship at the IRAP (Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie) studying galaxy clusters.

Once I’ve finished my studies, I’d like to take up a post as an engineer or researcher, linking astrophysical research with the associated space instrumentation.

How will your Advanced Master® prepare you to achieve these goals?

The TAS ASTRO Advanced Master®, with its systems engineering approach, has the advantage of exploring different themes in space. Firstly, after completing this Master’s degree I have a much clearer idea of space systems, their composition, techniques and associated expertise (control, propulsion, communications, energy, manoeuvres, etc.). This global vision will give me a better grasp of the future space telescope projects that I hope to work on.

Have you completed a work placement or assignment as part of your AM?

I’m doing an internship at IRAP (Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie) on the study of galaxy clusters.

After this internship, I will do a thesis on astrophysics and space instrumentation.

Did you have any international experience during your training?

In October 2024, I was lucky enough to be invited by CNES to IAC Milan (the world’s largest space conference). This conference was an opportunity for me to meet the other French students invited by CNES and all the international students invited by the space agencies (ESA, NASA, JAXA, etc.). In particular, I was able to present my project at CNES in 2024 in front of all these students.

What would you say to a future student who is hesitating about joining an ISAE-SUPAERO Advanced Master®?

An Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO is a unique opportunity to develop your skills in the field of space. If you are passionate about space and want to work in it, the AM TAS ASTRO is for you! Personally, this year has opened many doors for me, both academically and professionally. So don’t doubt yourself and apply for the ISAE-SUPAERO Advanced Master® programme!

Any advice for a successful Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO?

For me, a successful Advanced Master® rests on a number of pillars.

The social aspect is very important and the AM is a unique opportunity to meet new people with the same interests as you. Most of the people you meet at ISAE-SUPAERO will remain lifelong contacts for your professional career.

Then, of course, stay motivated and study regularly. The courses can sometimes be dense and certain periods can be intense but, if you work regularly, everyone who enters the AM at ISAE-SUPAERO has the ability to succeed. Never doubt yourself on this point!

Finally, ISAE-SUPAERO is the perfect opportunity to get involved in projects alongside your coursework. For me, it’s the ATLAS project, which will soon be taking off in 0g! The school and its researchers support many projects, both technically and financially, through the Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO.

Before joining ISAE-SUPAERO, I graduated from INSA Toulouse with a degree in mechanical engineering, specialising in systems engineering. I also studied space engineering during a semester abroad at Politecnico di Milano.

Did you already have professional experience before the Advanced Master®?

Yes, I did my end-of-studies placement (6 months) at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. I worked in molecular physics, studying in particular the phenomena of gas sublimation within cometary ices.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO for your Advanced Master®?

Joining ISAE-SUPAERO was first and foremost a childhood dream. After my internship at NASA, I thought it was finally time to give myself the means to make it come true. What’s more, it’s one of the most recognised routes into the space sector in France. The school has a reputation for excellence and a strong network in industry and space agencies.

This Advanced Master® has been recommended to me by many professionals in the field, both researchers and engineers.

What specific skills or knowledge have you come to acquire in this programme?

When I came to ISAE-SUPAERO, I naturally wanted to specialise in space engineering, but I also wanted to leave some doors open for the future, as I was already very specialised in mechanical engineering. I was delighted to discover orbital mechanics, which has become my favourite subject.

What subjects, projects, challenges or experiences have particularly impressed you during your training?

The course is very well trained, and I discovered broad aspects of aerospace engineering. However, I particularly enjoyed the highly technical subjects such as mission analysis and thermal engineering, which require broad and solid knowledge. The end-of-study project (Integrated Team Project) was by far the most interesting, because it was the longest: I was able to grasp all the technical complexity of a space mission, and choose the subjects I wanted to study in greater depth.

In your opinion, what are the main advantages of the AM that you have followed?

The main advantage of this master’s programme is its technical orientation. Unlike other Advanced Master® that focus more on management or soft skills, ISAE-SUPAERO has chosen to focus on the technical side. I think that makes all the difference. In fact, several of my fellow students have gone into new fields thanks to the scientific knowledge they acquired at the school. Access to numerous associations (Scube, Diving, Astronomy, etc.) made this year one of the best of my time at School.

How would you describe student life at ISAE-SUPAERO?

The School has a wealth of facilities and associations. You can take part in a staggering number of sports and join a large number of technical associations.

What are your career plans?

After my work placement, I’d like to do a PhD in orbital mechanics, if possible at ISAE-SUPAERO. Otherwise, joining a space agency is also one of my long-term goals (why not as an astronaut?).

How will your Advanced Master® prepare you to achieve these goals?

This Advanced Master® gives me the necessary legitimacy to enter this field, which was still difficult to access with my engineering degree alone.

Have you completed a work placement or assignment as part of your AM?

Yes, I’m currently doing an internship at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Washington DC, where I’m working on optimal trajectories to reach Lagrange points L4 and L5.

Did you have any international experience during your training?

I was also lucky enough to take part in an ESA training course at the beginning of the year, in Belgium and Germany. This training was designed to prepare future operators for satellite control rooms.

If someone is passionate about space, I’d tell them not to hesitate. This programme is really worth it. It’s clearly one of the best choices I’ve made in my career. I’ve had a passion for space ever since I was a kid, and this programme has enabled me to turn that passion into reality.

The main advantages of the Advanced Master® that I took are the unique opportunity to study at three renowned grandes écoles: ISAE-SUPAERO, ENAC and the École de l’Air et de l’Espace. This inter-school collaboration provides access to academic excellence and a multidisciplinary approach. Describe an outstanding experience or project that you carried out during your AM.

One of the highlights of my Advanced Master® was a month’s training at the École de l’Air. This period was a real opportunity to discover and immerse myself in the military world, familiarising myself with its challenges, rigour and processes. It was a key moment for better understanding the importance of project management in a demanding and structured environment, and it enriched my vision of the military aerospace sector, particularly in terms of leadership and teamwork.

How would you describe student life at ISAE-SUPAERO?

Student life at ISAE-SUPAERO is very pleasant. The campus offers many modern facilities, conducive to work and concentration. In addition, the on-site canteen and high-quality sports facilities are real assets, allowing students to eat well and maintain a balance between studies and physical activities. This helps to create a stimulating working environment and a pleasant living environment for students.

What are your career plans?

My current career plan is to join the armed forces. I am currently applying to join the French Navy.

This Advanced Master® prepares me directly for my professional goals by offering me a solid immersion in the military world, thanks in particular to the courses given by the Air and Space School. The “fil rouge” project was a very rewarding human and entrepreneurial experience. For 6 months, we become real entrepreneurs, going through the ups and downs of developing an innovative solution to the problem we choose at the beginning of the year.
