What was your academic background before joining ISAE-SUPAERO?

I did an engineering degree at ISAE-ENSMA specialising in aeronautical structures after completing a CPGE in Ajaccio.

Did you already have professional experience before the Advanced Master®?

I only did a placement at Safran Helicopter Engines in experimental vibration behaviour in engine testing.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO for your Advanced Master®?

ISAE SUPAERO is the only school able to offer training in flight testing.

How did you hear about our Advanced Master® programme?

During the ISAE group’s mobility week, I attended courses at ISAE-SUPAERO and came across a brochure listing all the AM. I had a basic interest in flight testing, so I became interested in the TAS AERO FTE course and consolidated this interest by getting the opinion of a former student of the course who also happened to be from ISAE-ENSMA.

What specific skills or knowledge have you come to acquire in this AM?

I’ve already had a lot of experience in the technical side of aeronautics, and I’ve already done a work placement in testing, so I came here to learn about flight testing first and foremost, as well as the skills associated with it, such as planning flight tests, analysing them and carrying them out.

What subjects, projects, challenges or experiences have particularly impressed you during your training?

All the flights offered during the TAS AERO FTE training course were outstanding. On one hand, thanks to the discussions with the pilots (Stéphane and Étienne, whom I salute and thank), their support was touching and we really created a bond with them, as they shared their experience and expertise with us. This made us realise that although the operational and technical worlds are different on paper, their link lies in the discipline of flight testing. On the other hand, this link also allows us to really understand what we’re learning, which is extremely gratifying.

In your opinion, what are the main advantages of the AM that you have followed?

The main assets of the TAS AERO FTE course are the quality of the lessons given, the teachers are very attentive and won’t hesitate to give private lessons in their spare time if they need to. I’d like to pay special tribute to Mr Éric Poquillon for this, even though we may have taken up too much of his free time… (Sorry)

What are your career plans?

My goal is to become an airline pilot. For me, being an aeronautical engineer is just a back-up plan that would allow me to work in a field that I love if ever the pilot profession closes its doors to me.

How will your Advanced Master® prepare you to achieve these goals?

This Advanced Master® gives me the key knowledge and skills to better understand the systems I’ll be working with as a pilot. On the other hand, it allows me to move into an area that interests me as an engineer, which is flight testing and operations.

Have you completed a work placement or assignment as part of your AM?

Yes, I did a 6-month internship at ATR in the pilot training centre. During this work placement, I wrote a manual of ATR recommendations for pilot training aimed at training organisations. This manual is in line with the new CBTA (Competency based training assessment) and EBT (Evidence based Training) training standards, in order to comply with ICAO and EASA regulations. This course is fascinating because I get to talk to pilots every day, whether it’s the instructors with their wealth of experience or the trainee pilots taking their type rating, who help me to be more intelligent.

His advice

What would you say to a future student who is hesitating about joining an ISAE-SUPAERO Advanced Master®?

If you are hesitating for financial reasons, it is always possible to work after your degree and join the course a few years later. Nothing is limiting. If you’re unsure about what you’re going to learn, you can always ask someone who has done the Advanced Master® on LinkedIn or elsewhere.

Any advice for a successful Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO?

Teamwork is essential and there’s no point in going it alone.

What was your academic background before joining ISAE-SUPAERO?

I graduated from INSA Toulouse with an engineering degree in computer science and networks, specialising in distributed systems and big data. I also spent a semester as an Erasmus exchange student in Jyväskylä, Finland, a very enriching human and intercultural experience.

Did you already have professional experience before the Advanced Master®?

Yes, I worked for three years as a Data Engineer for Airbus Commercial Aircraft, in a critical production environment. This experience enabled me to develop solid expertise in the architecture of data pipelines in the cloud and to take on the role of technical reference.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO for your Advanced Master®?

I wanted to acquire a more theoretical and scientific understanding of artificial intelligence in order to make the transition to a Data Scientist position. The ISAE-SUPAERO ITMA programme, at the interface between advanced engineering and concrete industrial cases, seemed to me the ideal way to develop my profile towards applied research issues in data science and AI. ISAE-SUPAERO’s academic reputation and its roots in the aerospace sector were also decisive factors.

What specific skills or knowledge have you come to acquire in this AM?

I came to deepen my understanding of the mathematical foundations of AI, to learn how to design complex models (based in particular on deep learning), and to develop my ability to apply these techniques to industrial cases such as surrogate models, simulation or data analysis.

What subjects, projects, challenges or experiences have particularly impressed you during your training?

The courses on generative models and deep neural networks were particularly memorable. In particular, the workshop where we coded our own version of a GPT-type model gave me a better understanding of how large language models work, from theory to practice. I also learnt a lot during the collaborative projects with industry, where we had to respond to concrete problems by mobilising cross-disciplinary skills, from modelling to the deployment of solutions.

In your opinion, what are the main advantages of the AM that you have followed?

This Advanced Master® offers a perfect balance between academic excellence and industrial application. The courses are taught in English by experts in the field, the projects are ambitious, and the school’s network is a real springboard. The multicultural environment and personalised support are also strong points.

Describe an outstanding experience or project that you carried out during your AM.

My apprenticeship at Airbus Defence and Space was a very formative project. I worked on surrogate models to simulate thermal phenomena in space, combining artificial intelligence and physical modelling. It was there that I discovered the value of PINNs (Physics-Informed Neural Networks), which made me want to explore in greater depth the links between physical modelling and artificial intelligence.

How would you describe student life at ISAE-SUPAERO?

The environment is very stimulating, human and caring. Students come from all over the world, creating an open and dynamic atmosphere. The school also places great emphasis on individual support, whether for career planning or academic success.

What are your career plans?

In the short term, I’d like to gain professional experience with a high scientific value, either through a CIFRE PhD to deepen my knowledge in artificial intelligence or through a VIE in a technologically stimulating environment. In the medium term, I’d like to move into a position in research and development (R&D), in a context where disruptive innovation is at the heart of projects, ideally in the aeronautics or space industry.

How will your Advanced Master® prepare you to achieve these goals?

The AIBT Advanced Master® gave me a solid grounding in artificial intelligence, combining academic rigour with concrete industrial use cases. It gave me a deeper understanding of advanced techniques such as neural networks, optimisation methods and digital twins, while developing an applied scientific approach. This training has prepared me for the complex challenges I will face in the future.

Have you completed a work placement or assignment as part of your AM?

Yes, I did my apprenticeship as a Data Scientist at Airbus Defence and Space, in the Data Analytics department. My assignment concerned the development of surrogate models for the thermal simulation of satellites, exploring in particular approaches based on neural networks and physics informed neural networks (PINNs). This project enabled me to put into practice what I had learnt in the Advanced Master® in a concrete industrial context with high technical stakes.

His advice

What would you say to a future student who is hesitating about joining an ISAE-SUPAERO Advanced Master®?

For me, joining the Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO was an important decision for the rest of my career. I found a stimulating, demanding but caring environment, which enabled me to gain expertise and clarity about my career aspirations. The programme offered me a unique opportunity to explore artificial intelligence with scientific rigour, while maintaining a strong link with industrial issues. It’s a rare opportunity to learn from top experts, researchers and industrialists. If you’re curious and motivated, go for it!

Any advice for a successful Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO?

Be curious and don’t be afraid to ask questions, even (and especially) when you haven’t yet mastered the subject. The Advanced Master® is intense, but it’s also a unique opportunity to rub shoulders with experts and build a solid foundation. Take the time to choose your work-study placement or your end-of-study project carefully, because that’s where you’ll put what you’ve learned into practice and confirm your professional orientation.

What was your academic background before joining ISAE-SUPAERO?

My academic career began with a bachelor’s degree in chemical sciences, which led to a master’s degree in chemistry and materials science under a sandwich course at the Université Paris-Saclay. This was combined with work experience as a production engineer in a chemical industry. My passion for aeronautics then made me want to combine materials science with the study and design of aeronautical structures. That’s why I chose this Advanced Master®.

Did you already have professional experience before the Advanced Master®?

Yes, before this Advanced Master®, I gained two years’ experience as an apprentice production engineer in a chemical industry. My main task was to identify the causes of a defect in the finished product. To do this, I was the link between the production team and the quality department.

Why did you choose ISAE-SUPAERO for your Advanced Master®?

I chose to pursue a Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO because of its strong focus on the aeronautical sector, which enabled me to deepen the link between materials science and aeronautical applications.

What specific skills or knowledge have you come to acquire in this AM?

By doing this AM, I wanted to acquire skills in structural calculations and mechanics. All these aspects were lacking in my previous courses.

What subjects, projects, challenges or experiences have particularly impressed you during your training?

During the course, we had to work on a 6-month project in a group of 9. This project was particularly memorable because it brought together people from a wide variety of backgrounds. So we had to learn to adapt to each other’s working methods, identify our strengths and areas for improvement, and work together effectively. The aim of the project was to use CAD software to design the interior of a hydrogen-powered aircraft. It was a real challenge, aimed at rethinking the standards of aviation as we know it.

In your opinion, what are the main advantages of the AM that you have followed?

This AM offers a number of advantages. Firstly, it benefits from the recognised academic excellence of ISAE-Supaero. The courses are taught by professionals from the sector, which brings a concrete and enriching dimension to the training. What’s more, we have an international intake made up of a small number of students, which makes it easier to forge links and discover new cultures.

What are your career plans?

I hope to work in the aeronautical industry, as a methods or test engineer, which would enable me to link my theoretical knowledge of structures with the industrial aspect.

How will your Advanced Master® prepare you to achieve these goals?

The Advanced Master AES enabled me to develop my technical skills while developing an in-depth understanding of the industrial requirements of the sector. This training has given me the tools to make the link between the theoretical modelling of structures and their practical application. Working as a methods or test engineer gives me the ideal opportunity to put these skills into practice, by helping to improve industrial processes and validate aircraft structural performance.

Did you do a work placement or assignment as part of your AM?

As part of my Advanced Master®, I did an internship at Airbus in Toulouse as an industrial assembly engineer. This experience enabled me to develop project management skills as well as technical expertise in drilling processes.

What would you say to a future student who is hesitating about joining an ISAE-SUPAERO Advanced Master®?

Go for it!

The teaching staff are very helpful and available. The atmosphere among students is friendly and supportive. The school’s facilities provide an ideal working environment. The courses are of the highest quality. It’s an experience that’s as demanding as it is rewarding.

Any advice for a successful Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The Master’s degree is intense, but super rewarding if you put your heart and soul into it.

What was your academic background before joining ISAE-SUPAERO?

Before joining ISAE-SUPAERO, I had obtained a degree in mechanical engineering from the École Nationale Supérieure Polytechnique in Yaoundé. This was supplemented by a short course on finite element methods applied to aeronautics, in particular using the MSC NASTRAN/PATRAN software.

Why did you choose to pursue an Advanced Master® at ISAE-SUPAERO?

I’d always dreamed of a career in aeronautics, and unlike today, at that time there was no courses in aeronautics in my country.

The AM ASAA was the perfect match for what I was looking for: training that will help me acquire the skills I need to be a major player in the field of aircraft airworthiness. The unique AM ASAA programme offered by ISAE Supaero in conjunction with ENAC and EOAA, in addition to the academic excellence and worldwide recognition of the institutions, left me no choice.

His experience at ISAE-SUPAERO

What lessons, projects or activities at the AM have impressed you the most?

What impressed me most was the quality of the teaching and the diversity of the lecturers. I immediately felt close to the industry because the lecturers were industry professionals with an excellent teaching approach. Exchanges with experts in airworthiness certification, group work on concrete cases (e.g. post type certification activities), and visits to the industry enabled me to firmly anchor the skills I had acquired.

How does the AM contribute to your technical and professional skills?

The MS has had a considerable impact on my technical and professional skills.

On the technical side, it has given me a deeper understanding of airworthiness certification requirements, aircraft certification processes and an in-depth knowledge of aircraft systems.

From a professional point of view, this Master’s degree has given me the ability to work as part of a team, with multiple group projects, critical analysis and technical communication skills, which are essential for working in multicultural and multidisciplinary environments.

Today, these skills enable me to take on both technical responsibilities for the airworthiness of aircraft in Cameroon and Central Africa, and teaching responsibilities at the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority Training School.

Did you carry out a work assignment or internship during your AM?

Yes, I did a work placement at Aeroconseil (AKKA Technologies), now Sabena Technics.

My internship enabled me to implement EASA’s ‘Level of Involvement’ concept in the supplementary type certification process, which was brand new in 2018. The application of this concept in the DOA has had concrete results in terms of simplifying the certification process and reducing the time taken to obtain STCs. During my internship, I also ran awareness-raising workshops for engineers in the certification teams on the new certification requirements for lithium-ion batteries.

His current career path

What is your current position? In which company or organisation do you work?

I am both the Head of Training at the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority’s Training School and a Technical Manager in Aircraft Airworthiness and SAFA inspector in the same authority’s Air Safety Department.

What business sector are you in today?

In the supervision of airworthiness and aircraft maintenance, as well as aeronautical training.

How has your Advanced Master® contributed to your professional integration or career development?

The Advanced Master® has been a real career accelerator. It now enables me to take on a dual role, as both a technical engineer and a team manager. I systematically stand out, in a good way, thanks to a solid background of high-level knowledge, not only in aircraft airworthiness but also in civil aviation safety more generally.

My teaching skills quickly came to the fore, thanks in particular to the workshop leadership responsibilities I took on during my work placement. This experience contributed directly to my promotion, when I took over the pedagogical management of the CCAA Training School.

Thanks to the academic credibility of ISAE-SUPAERO and the recognition of the programme by industry players, I was able to establish myself as an airworthiness reference within Cameroon’s civil aviation sector. This position has also enabled me to play an active part in large-scale regional projects, such as the development of Community regulations on initial and continuing airworthiness for the CEMAC zone.

What specific skills developed at ISAE-SUPAERO do you use the most today?

Skills in initial airworthiness, continuing airworthiness management, post-certification activities and safety event management, and knowledge of the certification requirements for different aircraft systems.

What advice would you give to a future candidate for an ISAE-SUPAERO Advanced Master®?

To a future candidate, I would say: Be prepared to invest yourself fully and take advantage of the professional network that this AM will offer you. It will give you much more than a title: intellectual rigour and the ability to evolve in complex, multicultural environments. This Advanced Master® will give you all the keys you need to make your dreams come true, and as a bonus, you’ll also have doors already open to you when you leave.

FRENCH SUPERCAM INSTRUMENT RECORDING THE SOUND OF INGENUITY'S 4th FLIGHT

Located 80 meters from the rover at the moment of take-off, the small helicopter rose to 5 meters above the ground before covering a distance of 133 meters before returning to land where it had taken off from. SuperCam's scientific microphone, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO, recorded the sound emitted by the rotation of the Martian drone's blades during its flight. This sound has a characteristic frequency of 84 Hz, equivalent to the low “E” of a piano or the bass voice of a human being. “This is a big surprise for the whole scientific team,” says Naomi Murdoch, a researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO who is studying the data from the microphone. "Tests carried out in a Martian atmosphere simulator to design this instrument, and our theories of sound propagation, indicated that the microphone would have great difficulty picking up the sounds of the helicopter. Indeed, Mars' thin atmosphere strongly attenuates sound transmission. We needed a bit of luck to record the helicopter from such a distance. We're very pleased to have succeeded in obtaining this recording, which is proving to be a goldmine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere". Developed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and a consortium of CNRS laboratories and its partners, coordinated by CNES, SuperCam's microphone is derived from a consumer model adapted to withstand the Martian environment. It pursues 3 substantial scientific and technical objectives of the Mars 2020 mission: Study the sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks, to gain a better understanding of their mechanical properties. Improving our understanding of atmospheric phenomena (wind turbulence, dust eddies, wind interactions with the rover, and now with the helicopter). Understanding the sound signature of the rover's various movements (robotic arm and mast operations, driving on normal or uneven ground, pump monitoring, etc.). The microphone was first switched on a few hours after Perseverance landed. It recorded the first Martian sounds generated by turbulence in the atmosphere. It is used daily in conjunction with laser rock ablation for chemical analysis of Mars. ABOUT THE MARS 2020 MISSION: NASA is relying on Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the development of the Mars 2020 mission. SuperCam was developed jointly by LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA) and a consortium of laboratories attached to the CNRS, French universities and research establishments. Several Spanish universities, led by the University of Valladolid, are also contributing to the instrument. CNES is responsible to NASA for the French contribution to SuperCam. The instrument is operated alternately from LANL and the French Operations Center for Science and Exploration (FOCSE) at CNES in Toulouse.

The sound of a Martian dust devil captured by the SuperCam microphone on Perseverance

This video and audio show the results obtained by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover and its SuperCam microphone when recording the sounds of a Martian dust devil passing overhead on 27 September 2021, the 215th Martian day or sol of the mission. The dust devil was 25 metres wide and at least 118 metres high, moving at a speed of approximately 19 km/h. This is the first time such a recording has been made, as capturing a dust devil requires a bit of luck. Indeed, it flew over the rover at a time when all of Perseverance's sensors measuring wind, pressure, temperature and dust, plus the NavigationXXX (Navcam) camera, were running. This allowed scientists to combine sounds, images and atmospheric data. The unique combination of this data, along with atmospheric modelling, enabled researchers to estimate the dimensions of the dust devil. Scientists cannot accurately predict when these vortices will occur. Rovers such as Perseverance and Curiosity monitor them regularly. When scientists notice that they are more frequent at a certain time of day or approaching from a certain direction, they focus their monitoring to try to capture a dust devil with all the sensors at their disposal. > To better understand the video, it shows three rows of images: - the row

From classroom to cockpit: flying activities at ISAE-SUPAERO

Take a video tour of the school's Lasbordes Air Operations Center (COAL). With a fleet of 9 light aircraft, the COAL offers 3 types of activities: - Pilot training to obtain the Private Pilot's License (PPL), which enables students to fly single-engine aircraft. - Practical work directly linked to the school's teaching programs, from flight mechanics to an introduction to flight test techniques for continuing education. - Research into human factors and pilot cognitive mechanisms in real time during flight. At ISAE-SUPAERO, engineering and Master's students are lucky enough to be able to take their pilot's license just a few kilometers from the campus. Several instructors accompany them and train them to fly. All are members of the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Operation Research Department, headed by Valérie Budinger.

The ‘SUPERCAM - Martian Exploration’ educational kit project was initiated by five partners: ISAE-SUPAERO, the Toulouse Academy, CNRS, CNES and Cité de l'espace. Under the guidance and supervision of astrophysicist Sylvestre Maurice, first-year students at ISAE-SUPAERO developed this educational tool to raise awareness of space exploration in classrooms, from sixth form to final year. ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space organize an international training course on space systems

Twenty engineers from the Peruvian space agency CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) attended a training course in Toulouse designed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space! The aim? To develop their skills in space systems and space missions. The entire program was placed under the academic responsibility of AnnaFederica Urbano, a lecturer and researcher in space systems and launchers at ISAE-SUPAERO. The engineers took part in a preliminary satellite design project. At the end of the five-week course, they all obtained the Certificate of Advanced Studies awarded by ISAE-SUPAERO. For ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space, this experience opens up prospects for future collaborations in training courses of this type for international customers and industrial and institutional partners. Feedback: a Latecoere engineer in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories

To strengthen the links between industry and research, more than 10 industrial R&D engineers have been made available to ISAE-SUPAERO as part of the France Relance plan! Cyril Geneste, research engineer at Latecoere, is one of them. Together with Miguel Charlotte, Associate Professor at the Institute, he looks back on this fruitful two-year collaboration. Their work, carried out in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories, focused on the behavior of aircraft door seals, which ensure cabin airtightness. Thanks to the Institute's cutting-edge equipment and academic expertise, Cyril Geneste was able in particular to carry out numerical modeling of seals in order to test their behavior. Students in their 3rdᵉ year of engineering studies were also involved in this work.
