Meeting with Marie-Bertille Mosnier

Why did you join the S-Cube?

"I started launching rockets at secondary school because there was a club run by Planète Sciences. I continued at secondary school, and then in preparatory school. In July 2018, I became a volunteer in the Planète Sciences association for the quality control of student rockets. It was the first time I had met S-Cube students. Two months later, I joined Supaéro and was called to join the S-Cube and even take charge of the two projects monitored by CNES for which they needed a project manager!"

What are the highlights of your experience?

"CNES steered us towards a project involving an orbital nanolancer with the possibility of a SpaceX-style return. There was no budget, so it was a real challenge. We first came up with a solution using fine grids and fins to rotate the rocket without using the engines. The idea wasn't taken up, but we did get €20,000 for trials the following year. Then there was Covid, but we went back to this project in 2021-2022 with a different angle of attack. A friend, Ruben Jaoui, a fluid mechanics student, had the idea of creating a calculator to avoid certain ranges of mechanical resonance that could affect the rocket's balance and trajectory. We created this calculator for CNES, and in doing so demonstrated the high technical level of ISAE-SUPAERO students!

What have these years at S-Cube brought you?

"When I joined the S-Cube, I was expecting to be involved in technical design, like I'd known from the rocket clubs I'd attended in secondary school and at prep school. But I very quickly found myself doing project management, which was completely new to me. In my 2nd year, I became a project manager, in other words a systems engineer with an overall view of the project. That taught me a lot about technical management, team management and the human side of things.

Sophie is the second French woman, 30 years after Claudie Haigneré, to fly on a long-duration mission. On the ISS, she will conduct around 200 scientific experiments, including 10 French experiments, covering fields such as medicine and materials physics. Have a good flight, Sophie. We will be following you throughout this amazing journey!

The sound of a Martian dust devil captured by the SuperCam microphone on Perseverance

This video and audio show the results obtained by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover and its SuperCam microphone when recording the sounds of a Martian dust devil passing overhead on 27 September 2021, the 215th Martian day or sol of the mission. The dust devil was 25 metres wide and at least 118 metres high, moving at a speed of approximately 19 km/h. This is the first time such a recording has been made, as capturing a dust devil requires a bit of luck. Indeed, it flew over the rover at a time when all of Perseverance's sensors measuring wind, pressure, temperature and dust, plus the NavigationXXX (Navcam) camera, were running. This allowed scientists to combine sounds, images and atmospheric data. The unique combination of this data, along with atmospheric modelling, enabled researchers to estimate the dimensions of the dust devil. Scientists cannot accurately predict when these vortices will occur. Rovers such as Perseverance and Curiosity monitor them regularly. When scientists notice that they are more frequent at a certain time of day or approaching from a certain direction, they focus their monitoring to try to capture a dust devil with all the sensors at their disposal. > To better understand the video, it shows three rows of images: - the row

The ‘SUPERCAM - Martian Exploration’ educational kit project was initiated by five partners: ISAE-SUPAERO, the Toulouse Academy, CNRS, CNES and Cité de l'espace. An exceptional scholarship for an innovative project

ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space organize an international training course on space systems

Twenty engineers from the Peruvian space agency CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) attended a training course in Toulouse designed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space! The aim? To develop their skills in space systems and space missions. The entire program was placed under the academic responsibility of AnnaFederica Urbano, a lecturer and researcher in space systems and launchers at ISAE-SUPAERO. The engineers took part in a preliminary satellite design project. At the end of the five-week course, they all obtained the Certificate of Advanced Studies awarded by ISAE-SUPAERO. For ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space, this experience opens up prospects for future collaborations in training courses of this type for international customers and industrial and institutional partners. FRENCH SUPERCAM INSTRUMENT RECORDING THE SOUND OF INGENUITY'S 4th FLIGHT

Located 80 meters from the rover at the moment of take-off, the small helicopter rose to 5 meters above the ground before covering a distance of 133 meters before returning to land where it had taken off from. SuperCam's scientific microphone, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO, recorded the sound emitted by the rotation of the Martian drone's blades during its flight. This sound has a characteristic frequency of 84 Hz, equivalent to the low “E” of a piano or the bass voice of a human being. “This is a big surprise for the whole scientific team,” says Naomi Murdoch, a researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO who is studying the data from the microphone. "Tests carried out in a Martian atmosphere simulator to design this instrument, and our theories of sound propagation, indicated that the microphone would have great difficulty picking up the sounds of the helicopter. Indeed, Mars' thin atmosphere strongly attenuates sound transmission. We needed a bit of luck to record the helicopter from such a distance. We're very pleased to have succeeded in obtaining this recording, which is proving to be a goldmine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere". Developed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and a consortium of CNRS laboratories and its partners, coordinated by CNES, SuperCam's microphone is derived from a consumer model adapted to withstand the Martian environment. It pursues 3 substantial scientific and technical objectives of the Mars 2020 mission: Study the sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks, to gain a better understanding of their mechanical properties. Improving our understanding of atmospheric phenomena (wind turbulence, dust eddies, wind interactions with the rover, and now with the helicopter). Understanding the sound signature of the rover's various movements (robotic arm and mast operations, driving on normal or uneven ground, pump monitoring, etc.). The microphone was first switched on a few hours after Perseverance landed. It recorded the first Martian sounds generated by turbulence in the atmosphere. It is used daily in conjunction with laser rock ablation for chemical analysis of Mars. ABOUT THE MARS 2020 MISSION: NASA is relying on Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the development of the Mars 2020 mission. SuperCam was developed jointly by LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA) and a consortium of laboratories attached to the CNRS, French universities and research establishments. Several Spanish universities, led by the University of Valladolid, are also contributing to the instrument. CNES is responsible to NASA for the French contribution to SuperCam. The instrument is operated alternately from LANL and the French Operations Center for Science and Exploration (FOCSE) at CNES in Toulouse.

3 questions to Marie Delaroche, 3ᵉ year student and MDRS 293 crew commander

Since February 18, seven ISAE-SUPAERO engineering students have been living a simulated Martian life and carrying out experiments in collaboration with CNES and several research laboratories at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in UTAH (USA)! For the second time, the mission is led by a woman: Marie Delaroche, a passionate #spaceexplorer, who was already part of crew 275 departing in 2023. We asked her 3 questions to find out more about the challenges of this mission and her feelings as #flightcommander! Alongside her, three young women and three young men in their 2ᵉ year of #engineering studies have taken on the roles of astronomer, scientist, botanist, journalist, health worker and onboard engineer. They are all members of the Mars Club ISAE-SUPAERO, a student association for the popularization of science focused on the Red Planet and the missions dedicated to its exploration and study. They are currently experimenting with AI4U, the artificial intelligence that assists astronauts in their daily tasks (environmental measurements, voice recognition, emergency exercises). They are also conducting a science popularization experiment in collaboration with secondary school pupils. Inspired by the film The Martian, in which an astronaut grows potatoes on the Red Planet, the aim of this experiment is to compare plant growth in Martian soil with growth in terrestrial soil! Arnaud Prost, ESA reserve astronaut and ISAE-SUPAERO alumnus: “I was incredibly lucky to be here”

Fighter pilot and reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), Arnaud Prost returned to his former school on Thursday March 28 to meet 200 secondary school students as part of the ISAE SUPAERO OSE program. It was an opportunity for him to recall the “great memories” of his student experience at ISAE-SUPAERO, his long-standing commitment to the student social outreach program and the “Aquanauts” scheme he set up with OSE l'ISAE-SUPAERO. And in passing, he offers a few words of advice to young people who might dream of following in his footsteps: “Don't let yourself be convinced that one of these paths isn't for you!” A 2017 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Arnaud Prost is among those selected for the ESA Astronaut Class of 2022, alongside Sophie Adenot and Anthea Comellini, both also alumni of the school. They join other illustrious ESA astronauts who have already studied at the school: Thomas Pesquet, Luca Parmitano and Samantha Cristoforetti. Since 1970, ISAE-SUPAERO has contributed to the progress of the space age through its training, research and innovation activities. As the only organization in France to offer degree courses (engineering, master's, specialized master's, doctorate) covering all 22 space-related themes identified by CNES, the Institute offers a royal road to space careers. Why did you join the S-Cube?

"I joined the S-Cube in 2015, in my first year of the Engineering course, out of an interest in space. There were several projects underway and I chose the SERA 3 rocket project, the only one supervised by CNES. This was the very first three-engine rocket project that the S-Cube worked on. As a result, we had to set up a team to simulate trajectories in the event that one engine failed to ignite. There were three of us students working on the trajectories, about fifteen in all on the project".

What are the highlights of your experience?

"One of the highlights was the launch of our rocket, after two years' work. For this, we went north of the Arctic Circle to the Kiruna space base. We worked with engineers from CNES and the Swedish Space Agency. The launch went very well. It was very stimulating!

What have these years at S-Cube brought you?

"The strong point of this project is that we were supervised by professionals from CNES. We had regular reviews, every 6 months, just like real space projects. This gave me an insight into the workings of the space industry and enabled me to work as part of a team over a long period of time. It also confirmed my interest in space. I went on to do a PhD in automation, supervised by ISAE-SUPAERO and CNES, and then set up my own space start-up, DYCSYT.

Why did you join the S-Cube?

"Quite simply, I wanted to get involved in a technical club - that's what I loved! The first year, I worked on an electronic pressure measurement card. The idea was to place the measurement cards as close as possible to the pressure taps to reduce the length of the tubes and get better accuracy. The second year, I was club treasurer and responsible for the SERA rocket, the first supersonic rocket launched by the club.

What are the highlights of your experience?

"The launches, of course, but above all the pre-launch rush!All in all, it was a very rich experience, both technically and in human terms. For example, we had to optimise communication between the various players, even though we had no training in this area.

What have these years at S-Cube brought you?

"It was thanks to contacts within the S-Cube that I was able to get my gap year internship at Safran (Heracles) and also thanks to the club and this internship that I was able to get support for my application for a Cifre thesis later on. This experience also enabled me to work alongside space engineers and discover the sector, its opportunities and its difficulties.

Meeting with Axel Coulon

This is the story of a kid from Lorraine who has always asked himself a lot of questions...

“Since childhood, I’ve been on a quest for meaning,” says Axel Coulon. That’s why I became interested in philosophy and space at a very early age. Four years ago, the American Mars 2020 mission turned this interest into a passion.

This mission to explore the Red Planet, which culminated in the Perseverance rover being sent to Mars, was developed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). But back then, in 2020, Axel had no idea that he would be working in this prestigious laboratory as a student at ISAE-SUPAERO. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, he was continuing his higher education at Polytech Nancy, an engineering school near his home.

And he was riveted by the Perseverance odyssey. “I kept asking myself: how could we send a helicopter and a rover to Mars?” The Martian adventure ended up influencing his decision to focus his training on space, and more specifically on space rovers and helicopters.

But this kid always wanted to go to Supaéro

After an academic stay in Montreal to study on-board automation, Axel first landed a placement at ESA’s European Astronaut Center (EAC) in Cologne. It was a dream come true. “I was helping to develop electronic software for the tablets that astronauts use to send data from field training. I had the opportunity to work with European astronauts like Luca Parmitano and to meet Thomas Pesquet on several occasions. I used to think about the village of 1,000 people where I grew up and say to myself, this is incredible!”

Once he had his engineering degree, he decided to take a year’s specialisation at ISAE-SUPAERO via the TAS Astro Advanced Masters®. In September 2023, he heads for Toulouse to fulfil a new dream: “I’ve always wanted to do Supaéro.” But preparatory classes and Grandes Écoles weren’t common in the environment I grew up in.

On the Toulouse campus, Axel quickly felt like a fish in water. He made friends with other space enthusiasts and joined diving and football clubs. He also immersed himself 100% in his training: “It was an intense and demanding year, but it was great for acquiring a complete knowledge of space engineering!” Above all, he was able to talk to alumni who had just returned from their internships at NASA. That’s when the idea, still crazy just a few months earlier, took shape in his mind: “I’m going to do it too”.

My teachers were very supportive. I realised that when you dare to ask for help, you get it. And that gives you confidence.

But an internship at the JPL was not a foregone conclusion. “Thanks to my teachers, I contacted a number of researchers working in flight robotics, but the replies were slow in coming.”

Without wasting any time, he threw himself into another challenge: finding funding. Several months passed, during which Axel took the risk of turning down a great opportunity for an internship in France. Deep down, he couldn’t stop believing. “My teachers in Toulouse and Nancy were very supportive. I realised that when you dare to ask for help, you get it, and that gives you confidence.” And he was right. His deserving profile and results won him an Espace grant from the Fondation des Ailes de France, a grant from his region (Grand Est) and a grant from the Fondation ISAE-SUPAERO. After four and a half months, he completed his budget by supplementing this funding with a loan from the same Foundation.

Then he discovered Los Angeles

Los Angeles is finally in his sights. At the end of April 2024, Axel sets off with the excitement of discovering the laboratory to which he owes his passion. But also the West Coast and the famous American way of life. “When you first discover American life, you’re amazed,” he says. There are house parties, you visit California… Everything seems so big. When you see LA from the window of the plane, you ask yourself: how big is this city? From time to time, however, he is reminded of the Pink City. “There are lots of Sup’ alumni in LA! For the first few weeks, when I’d walk around with my ISAE-SUPAERO T-shirt or cap on, I’d get stopped in the street,” he jokes. I thought: they’re everywhere!

At the JPL alone, he meets up with five other ISAE-SUPAERO students, all from the General Engineering course. “I don’t think we’ve ever been so many at the same time!” The atmosphere is “very international” and the site fills him with wonder: “It’s just as I imagined it would be.” I’m working in the new drone aviary. You can see there’s a lot of equipment and a lot of money.

His research placement is looking at finding landing sites for helicopters on Mars, in line with Mars 2020. However, the corporate culture is different from what he is used to in Europe. Fortunately, Axel has already had the opportunity to work in an American environment, during an academic semester at the French branch of Georgia Tech University in Metz. “In the United States, we don’t see work and management in the same way as in France. Problems are solved like an audit. Everyone also has a lot of freedom to act, which builds confidence. We assume that people know what they’re doing.”

This freedom of initiative is all the greater because he arrived just a few months after a plan to make engineers redundant at JPL. “There was work to be done and I was immediately given the responsibilities of an engineer.”

In the United States, work and management are viewed differently to the way they are in France. Problems are solved like an audit. Everyone also has a lot of freedom to act, which builds confidence. We assume that people know what they’re doing.
Even so, he doesn’t see himself staying in the United States after his placement. “As a Frenchman, I think it’s important to come back and work in Europe, on the continent that trained me and gave me so much. After his first love with Mars, he is now looking to the Moon. “With the prospect of future explorations, it’s very exciting!” His new goal? To work at the ESA, at the EAC where I did my traineeship, and where lunar equipment is being developed.

He’s sure to miss the Californian sun when he gets back, just after Halloween. But Axel is also looking forward to seeing his loved ones again. “Here in LA, everyone has their own car and house, and there are very few people in the street. I kind of miss the social atmosphere of France!”

From classroom to cockpit: flying activities at ISAE-SUPAERO

Take a video tour of the school's Lasbordes Air Operations Center (COAL). With a fleet of 9 light aircraft, the COAL offers 3 types of activities: - Pilot training to obtain the Private Pilot's License (PPL), which enables students to fly single-engine aircraft. - Practical work directly linked to the school's teaching programs, from flight mechanics to an introduction to flight test techniques for continuing education. - Research into human factors and pilot cognitive mechanisms in real time during flight. At ISAE-SUPAERO, engineering and Master's students are lucky enough to be able to take their pilot's license just a few kilometers from the campus. Several instructors accompany them and train them to fly. All are members of the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Operation Research Department, headed by Valérie Budinger.

The Advanced Master® HADA - Helicopter, Aircraft, and Drone Architecture from ISAE-SUPAERO

The HADA program is accredited by the Conférence des Grandes Écoles and teaches the cutting-edge techniques needed for future aircraft and rotorcraft systems, including the new challenges of urban mobility. 2 learning modes throughout the year: - an academic session from September to March, taught by permanent ISAE-SUPAERO professors and aeronautics industry experts with their up-to-date knowledge and experience (Airbus Helicopters, Airbus Group, Safran/Turbomeca, Thales, etc.). ⇾ including: lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. Advanced Master® HADA: EMBARK FOR A COURSE IN THE AIR!

ISAE-SUPAERO's Advanced Master® “Helicopter, Aircraft, and Drone Architecture” (HADA), in partnership with Airbus Helicopters, provides high-level technical and engineering skills for careers in the aircraft, drone and helicopter sectors. Right from the start of the program, students board a helicopter for an in-flight course! “In this way, they are immediately involved in the study of the helicopter's various controls and reactions,” explains Jean-Marc Moschetta, head of the program. This experience will serve them well throughout their training: "During theory classes, they'll be able to relate their own experience to an understanding of helicopter flight mechanics. Co-founder of the startup Viraj H2, created during his 3ᵉ year of engineering studies, Joseph Risson wants to contribute his expertise to the decarbonization of air travel by exploring a new hydrogen propulsion architecture! Joseph and his partner, Paul de Goÿs, were awarded the €1 million Lopez-Loreta Foundation prize in 2023 to continue their research into this innovative propulsion method, and now benefit from the support and expertise of InnovSpace, the school's official incubator, where the startup is currently housed. Like all our alumni, he plays an essential role in creating lasting links between the institution and its former students. Meeting with Joseph Risson, engineering student and winner of a scholarship for his Viraj H2 project

On Friday, 8 December, the Swiss Jean-Jacques and Felicia Lopez-Loreta Foundation for Academic Excellence awarded a prize to Viraj H2, a project developed at ISAE-SUPAERO. Joseph Risson, a third-year engineering student, is studying a hybridisation between a hydrogen turboprop engine and a fuel cell in order to accelerate the decarbonisation of air transport. The €1 million grant will enable Joseph and his partner Paul de Goÿs to validate the technology behind their innovation.

The HappyAtSchool® label renewed: happy students at ISAE-SUPAERO!

The quality of the facilities available on campus, a student life rich in extra-curricular projects, high employability in a sector that matches their aspirations… ISAE-SUPAERO students have nothing but praise for their school! So it’s no surprise that the Institute has been awarded the HappyAtSchool® label for the second year running.

This ChooseMyCompany label is based exclusively on the opinions of students, which are collected by means of an anonymous questionnaire.

89% of those questioned felt that their student life was rich in opportunities and extra-curricular activities (compared with 63% for the average school);
81% felt that the quality of the facilities was commensurate with their school’s ambitions (compared with 66% for the average school);
80% felt that the Institute gave them access to a professional environment that they wanted (compared with 68% for the average school);
91% believe that their diploma is recognised by employers (compared with 80% for the average school).

“The boundless wealth of community life”, “the very high standard of teachers and lecturers”, “the way in which our teachers prepare us for the world of industry” and “the rich, modern and well-equipped infrastructure” were among the advantages highlighted by individual respondents.

Living in the skin of an analogue astronaut

An incredible adventure awaits Erin, the commander of Crew 311, and her crew of analogue astronauts, made up of 2 female students and 4 male students from ISAE-SUPAERO. From mid-February to mid-March, they will experience an unprecedented human and professional experience in a scientific station dedicated to research into the exploration of the Red Planet.

Several years ago, the American Mars Society set up this base in the Utah desert in the United States. Before them, ten other ISAE-SUPAERO crews took part in the adventure, carrying their share of experimental protocols.

MDRS 2025 mission – CREW 311

Erin, Isolde, Somaya, Meddi, Quentin, Robin and Célyan will be living together for their four-week stay in a single-storey cylindrical cabin measuring 9 m in diameter. There will be a living area, a sleeping area in small cubicles, very limited access to the internet and only extra-vehicular outings outside the cabin for experimental purposes will be possible.

Each member of the crew has his or her own function: scientist, on-board engineer, health and safety officer, astronomer, botanist, journalist. The architecture, equipment and materials are adapted to the crew’s activities. Immersion in the station: two robotic and lunar observatories, a repair and assembly module, two airlocks, one for external sorties with a decompression/compression airlock, the other for joining the station’s modules and in particular the “green hab”, in other words the greenhouse where the botanist works. Three rovers and astronaut suits are also available for spacewalks.

A real scientific mission for the participants

The aim of this simulation of Martian life is to collect a wealth of data that will be useful for the scientific experiments that the crew have been preparing for months. “We’ve been working for over a year with our partners to deploy, develop and test equipment and experimental protocols,” explains Isolde. “We will be launching around ten experimental systems on the base, focusing on three main themes: human factors, astronaut living conditions and equipment testing,” she adds. One of these, the Spaceship France project, is the result of a collaboration with CNES.

Focus on four extraterrestrial experiments

Life assistance AI for astronauts

The AMAIA (Assistant Multifonction pour l’Astronaute par AI/Astronaut Multipurpose AI Assistant) project, developed by CNES in collaboration with students from ISAE-SUPAERO, aims to develop an autonomous artificial intelligence to assist astronauts. The application works without an internet connection, and is integrated into a watch worn by each operator, individually configured in line with their specific needs. It can be used to assist with procedures, such as answering questions about the protocols of other experiments, searching for information in their database, helping to write daily reports, or providing information about environmental conditions (ambient temperature, humidity, etc.). AMAIA will also be able to act as a confidante, sometimes reducing the astronauts’ mental workload.

A rover kit manufactured on the Martian site

Led by the Supaeromoon student club, the Rover en kit project involves designing a rover that is fully assembled and tested on site. The aim is to demonstrate the feasibility of local manufacture on an extraterrestrial base, using tools such as 3D printing. Only the complex electronic parts are transported from Earth, while the structure of the rover is made from materials available on site. A concept designed to reduce the costs and risks associated with space transport while increasing the autonomy of future space stations.

MoovToLearn for the well-being of astronauts

Base of the Mars Desert Research Station (UTAH)

The crew will be testing a non-invasive device designed to improve the psychological well-being and efficiency of astronauts. Sessions combining meditation, light therapy, music therapy and sophrology will seek to stimulate a mental state conducive to problem-solving and limit the effects of microgravity.

In concrete terms, four participants will follow a programme before, during and after the “Mars mission”, while three other participants will form the control group. The results will be measured using questionnaires and psycho-technical tests to assess the impact on their state of mind and performance.

Growing micro-pods to eat and live better on Mars

The station’s greenhouse, called GreenHab, in the hands of Meddi the botanist, will be used to study the impact of micro-pods on the astronauts’ diet and psychological well-being in their Martian environment.

As soon as they return to Earth, the results will be analysed, enabling the partners to enrich their approaches. Clearly, students who are passionate about space exploration will also have experienced an adventure that will shape their study and career plans.

“The Red Planet changed me. I’ve grown, learnt and evolved. I now know that science can motivate gigantic projects that are bigger than us and that will continue to inspire us”, says Erin, the commander of “Crew 311”, who was already part of the crew in 2024. The experience inspired her to write the story “Our adventure on Mars”, published by Editions Cépaduès.
