Selected as one of the 10 finalists for the Occitanie region in the very first edition of the “My Apprenticeship in 180 Seconds” public speaking contest, Malaury Fouet—an ISAE-SUPAERO engineering apprentice at Airbus—has just won first prize!

A public speaking competition to promote apprenticeships

“My Apprenticeship in 180 Seconds (MA180s)” is a public speaking competition organised by CFA Midisup, in collaboration with the CFA des Universités Centre-Val de Loireand theANASUP network. 

The aim of this project is to showcase higher education apprentices through a challenge:

  • To describe their apprenticeship experience in 180 seconds flat.

In three minutes, each candidate must give an insight into their journey, their responsibilities, their achievements and what the work-study programme has brought them.

What counts? Eloquence, the ability to explain technical terms and to make the link between your work responsibilities and your work-study programme.

Much more than just a public speaking challenge, this competition is arewarding experience that helps develop key skills such as public speaking, structuring a speech, communication and self-confidence. 

Out of the 50 apprentice candidates from across Occitanie, ten finalists were selected back in February to take part in the competition final held on 11 June.

This selection marked the start of several months of intensive preparation, including three coaching sessions led by drama teachers.

Since applications were submitted in January, a great deal of groundwork has been carried out: successive rewrites of the texts, careful consideration of word choice, rhythm, intonation and the intention behind each sentence, all with a view to crafting a performance that is both authentic and impactful.

At the end of the three minutes allotted to present her background, her learning journey and what this experience has brought her – both professionally and personally – it was Malaury Fouet who ultimately won first prize in this very first edition of the competition.

Through my participation in the ‘My Apprenticeship in 180 Seconds’ competition, I wanted to send a strong message about equal opportunities.

By recounting my journey, from my rural home in Ariège to the Airbus hangars, I wanted to show that an apprenticeship can be a fantastic stepping stone to an engineering degree, which can sometimes seem out of reach.

This competition was also an opportunity to pay tribute to the people who believed in me, particularly my maths teacher, Laetitia, who recognised my interest in aeronautics when I was just 11 years old and encouraged me to pursue this path.

This recognition has now strengthened my commitment to secondary school pupils, particularly through the OSE L’ISAE-SUPAERO association, to encourage them to believe in their ambitions and never give up on their dreams.

Finally, this challenge gave me the opportunity to shed light on my day-to-day life as an apprentice at Airbus by explaining, in just three minutes, my responsibilities and how the theoretical knowledge gained at university complements the practical experience acquired in the workplace.

“What stands out most for me is the realisation that a simple message can sometimes open a door.

So if you’re in doubt, if you’re hesitating, if you think a dream is too far out of reach: start dreaming and never stop.”

Orbit Your Thesis: ISAE-SUPAERO in zero gravity with the AIM experiment

Artery In Microgravity (#AIM), the first student scientific experiment designed and developed in collaboration since 2018 by ISAE-SUPAERO and Polytechnique Turin, was launched on 23 November 2022 by Space X's Dragon cargo ship to the International Space Station (ISS)! Selected by the ESA as part of its ‘Orbit your thesis’ programme, AIM aims to study the behaviour of the heart and its arteries in space, in order to determine whether people with heart problems will one day be able to stay there.

Marie-Hélène Baroux, Chairof the ISAE Group andChief Executive of ISAE-SUPAERO, was accompanied by Sawsen Ayari-Pouliquen, Director of Social Affairs and Trainingat GIFAS, and the heads of the schools delivering the programme, to present the ISAE Group badge to the 86 apprentices in the 2028 intake.

Training managers, along with industry representatives and apprenticeship mentors, were present to support the apprentices, whom they will be guiding throughout their training.

 For Marie-Hélène Baroux, as well as strengthening the bonds between the apprentices,“this ceremony marks their commitment to their training and should enable them to better understand all the opportunities offered by this programme”.

Qualified engineers currently in employment who had completed this apprenticeship programme shared their experiences, enabling the apprentices to visualise their training journey more clearly and to envisage their professional future a little more clearly.

A training programme supported by GIFAS

Supportedby GIFAS(the French Aerospace Industries Association), this course is run by four of the ISAE Group’s schools: ISAE-SUPAERO (Toulouse), ISAE-ENSMA (Poitiers), ISAE-SUPMÉCA (Paris-Saint-Ouen) and ESTACA (Laval).

“GIFAS is delighted to support the ISAE Group in launching this training programme, which has been requested and eagerly awaited by our member companies. We wish the 86 engineering apprentices in this cohort every success in their apprenticeships, at their schools and within the aerospace industry” – Sawsen Ayari-Pouliquen , Director of Social Affairs and Trainingat GIFAS.

ISAE Group: four schools offering the same course

The three-year programme includes, in addition to essential scientific and technical knowledge, modules focusing on the technical and societal challenges facing the engineers of tomorrow, such as sustainable development, people management and innovation.

It also includes an essential practical component, delivered through work-study placements within one or more companies in the aerospace sector, with a minimum of nine weeks spent abroad.

The programme is structured around an identical core curriculum for the first two years, with each school offering a specialisation pathway inthe third year: Avionics and On-Board Systems in Toulouse,Energy Systems and Advanced Materials inPoitiers,Logistics, Systems and Aeronautical Production Processes inSaint-Ouen,and Digital Technologies for Production and Eco-Responsible Innovation atthe Laval campus.

France is stepping up its space ambitions. At the Choose France summit, the President of the Republic announced that French astronauts Thomas Pesquet and Arnaud Prost will take part in two commercial space missions in 2027, as part of an agreement between France and the American company Vast.

Testimony of Joseph Risson, ingénieur 2024 alumni & co-founder of Viraj H2 From student to entrepreneur: that's the path Joseph Risson, a 2024 graduate, has taken at ISAE-SUPAERO!

Co-founder of the startup Viraj H2, created during his 3ᵉ year of engineering studies, Joseph Risson wants to contribute his expertise to the decarbonization of air travel by exploring a new hydrogen propulsion architecture! Joseph and his partner, Paul de Goÿs, were awarded the €1 million Lopez-Loreta Foundation prize in 2023 to continue their research into this innovative propulsion method, and now benefit from the support and expertise of InnovSpace, the school's official incubator, where the startup is currently housed. Like all our alumni, he plays an essential role in creating lasting links between the institution and its former students. They encourage mutual support and the sharing of professional opportunities, help strengthen the community and support future generations with their experience and resources.

Meeting with Joseph Risson, engineering student and winner of a scholarship for his Viraj H2 project

On Friday, 8 December, the Swiss Jean-Jacques and Felicia Lopez-Loreta Foundation for Academic Excellence awarded a prize to Viraj H2, a project developed at ISAE-SUPAERO. Joseph Risson, a third-year engineering student, is studying a hybridisation between a hydrogen turboprop engine and a fuel cell in order to accelerate the decarbonisation of air transport. The €1 million grant will enable Joseph and his partner Paul de Goÿs to validate the technology behind their innovation.

Today, the entire ISAE-SUPAERO community is coming together: students, staff, faculty, and alumni are showing their support for Sophie Adenot, European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut and ISAE-SUPAERO alumna, as she embarks on a eight-month mission to the ISS. Sophie is the second French woman, 30 years after Claudie Haigneré, to fly on a long-duration mission. On the ISS, she will conduct around 200 scientific experiments, including 10 French experiments, covering fields such as medicine and materials physics. Have a good flight, Sophie. We will be following you throughout this amazing journey!

3 questions to Marie Delaroche, 3ᵉ year student and MDRS 293 crew commander

Since February 18, seven ISAE-SUPAERO engineering students have been living a simulated Martian life and carrying out experiments in collaboration with CNES and several research laboratories at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in UTAH (USA)! For the second time, the mission is led by a woman: Marie Delaroche, a passionate #spaceexplorer, who was already part of crew 275 departing in 2023. We asked her 3 questions to find out more about the challenges of this mission and her feelings as #flightcommander! Alongside her, three young women and three young men in their 2ᵉ year of #engineering studies have taken on the roles of astronomer, scientist, botanist, journalist, health worker and onboard engineer. They are all members of the Mars Club ISAE-SUPAERO, a student association for the popularization of science focused on the Red Planet and the missions dedicated to its exploration and study. They are currently experimenting with AI4U, the artificial intelligence that assists astronauts in their daily tasks (environmental measurements, voice recognition, emergency exercises). They are also conducting a science popularization experiment in collaboration with secondary school pupils. Inspired by the film The Martian, in which an astronaut grows potatoes on the Red Planet, the aim of this experiment is to compare plant growth in Martian soil with growth in terrestrial soil! Arnaud Prost, ESA reserve astronaut and ISAE-SUPAERO alumnus: “I was incredibly lucky to be here”

Fighter pilot and reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), Arnaud Prost returned to his former school on Thursday March 28 to meet 200 secondary school students as part of the ISAE SUPAERO OSE program. It was an opportunity for him to recall the “great memories” of his student experience at ISAE-SUPAERO, his long-standing commitment to the student social outreach program and the “Aquanauts” scheme he set up with OSE l'ISAE-SUPAERO. And in passing, he offers a few words of advice to young people who might dream of following in his footsteps: “Don't let yourself be convinced that one of these paths isn't for you!” A 2017 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Arnaud Prost is among those selected for the ESA Astronaut Class of 2022, alongside Sophie Adenot and Anthea Comellini, both also alumni of the school. They join other illustrious ESA astronauts who have already studied at the school: Thomas Pesquet, Luca Parmitano and Samantha Cristoforetti. Since 1970, ISAE-SUPAERO has contributed to the progress of the space age through its training, research and innovation activities. As the only organization in France to offer degree courses (engineering, master's, specialized master's, doctorate) covering all 22 space-related themes identified by CNES, the Institute offers a royal road to space careers. In a corner of InnovSpace, Ahlem is loading the first-aid drone that she and four of her friends have developed. “We chose to design a rescue drone, capable of providing first aid to an injured person in the mountains”, explains Lilian, who is standing next to her. A drone… that only Ahlem can see, with his augmented reality helmet over his eyes. The object is virtual. It was created by the students on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform

Developed by Dassault Systèmes, this platform can be used to create the digital twin of any product and simulate all the stages in its life cycle. “It’s cutting-edge software, because its portfolio of applications is complete. It includes more than 400 applications used in industry, which makes it possible to virtually carry out an engineering project from A to Z,” explains Thomas Zamolo, head of the module at ISAE-SUPAERO. “Something that would be impossible in real life.”

Deployed in 2023 by the ISAE Group schools as part of an academic partnership with Dassault Systèmes, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is used at ISAE-SUPAERO to train students on the Industrial Engineering apprenticeship, Master’s and Advanced Master’s® courses. It will be extended to the General Engineering course at the start of the new academic year in September.

A public utility drone, 100% digital

For the time being, the module that Thomas Zamolo and Luc Patouillard have created around the platform is aimed at 3rdᵉ year apprenticeship students, “to put into practice the skills they have acquired during the first two years”.

Based on the digital twin of a commercial drone, accessible in the software, they have to imagine and manufacture a payload that meets a customer need. Working in groups of five, the students have 90 hours to devise the specific features of their drone, design their payload, identify the right materials, manufacture the parts and assemble them, test the mechanisms and robustness of their product and finalise it. All in a 100% digital environment. “You can do everything with it,” says Ahlem. You can model your product in 3D or run a dynamic simulation of each component and each element that makes it up.

The final sessions, held at InnovSpace, the Institute’s fablab and incubator, are an opportunity for the students to bring their projects to life. In workshops, they will be able to manipulate their drone using virtual reality, print a 3D model and even draw up a marketing plan for its commercialisation.

“A global vision of the project”

Thanks to this module, future apprentice engineers can strengthen their skills in systems engineering, mechatronics, finite element simulation and manufacturing engineering, while improving their project management skills. “The interface offered by 3DEXPERIENCE brings them closer to what they will use in business. The difference is that in a company, they will never have access to the entire portfolio of applications. Through this project, we are giving them a global vision of the business applications used in industry”, notes Thomas Zamolo.

Each half-day course gives learners the opportunity to acquire a new skill, in line with the skills-based approach gradually being developed at the Institut. And some curious students go even further! This was the case for Ahlem and Lilian’s group: “In the applications catalogue, we came across a sheet metal module that we could use to create an aluminium box. We worked out how to use it ourselves.”

Towards joint projects with the ISAE Group

Another advantage of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is its collaborative and secure nature. Data is stored on the cloud managed and secured by Dassault Systèmes on French soil,” notes Thomas Zamolo. Thanks to this, teachers and students have easy access to secure storage spaces and can share their work with other members of the ISAE Group.

Now that the platform has been deployed in six other member and partner schools of the ISAE Group (ISAE-ENSMA, ISAE-Supméca, ESTACA, ESTIA, EIGSI and ELISA Aerospace), the teachers plan to take the collaboration even further. “We plan to set up a joint project with the ISAE Group. We could, for example, imagine an engineering project carried out by groups of students from each school, who would work in a complementary way, depending on the specialisation of each school”.

From classroom to cockpit: flying activities at ISAE-SUPAERO

Take a video tour of the school's Lasbordes Air Operations Center (COAL). With a fleet of 9 light aircraft, the COAL offers 3 types of activities: - Pilot training to obtain the Private Pilot's License (PPL), which enables students to fly single-engine aircraft. - Practical work directly linked to the school's teaching programs, from flight mechanics to an introduction to flight test techniques for continuing education. - Research into human factors and pilot cognitive mechanisms in real time during flight. At ISAE-SUPAERO, engineering and Master's students are lucky enough to be able to take their pilot's license just a few kilometers from the campus. Several instructors accompany them and train them to fly. All are members of the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Operation Research Department, headed by Valérie Budinger.

ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space organize an international training course on space systems

Twenty engineers from the Peruvian space agency CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) attended a training course in Toulouse designed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space! The aim? To develop their skills in space systems and space missions. The entire program was placed under the academic responsibility of AnnaFederica Urbano, a lecturer and researcher in space systems and launchers at ISAE-SUPAERO. The engineers took part in a preliminary satellite design project. At the end of the five-week course, they all obtained the Certificate of Advanced Studies awarded by ISAE-SUPAERO. For ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space, this experience opens up prospects for future collaborations in training courses of this type for international customers and industrial and institutional partners. The Advanced Master® HADA - Helicopter, Aircraft, and Drone Architecture from ISAE-SUPAERO

The HADA program is accredited by the Conférence des Grandes Écoles and teaches the cutting-edge techniques needed for future aircraft and rotorcraft systems, including the new challenges of urban mobility. 2 learning modes throughout the year: - an academic session from September to March, taught by permanent ISAE-SUPAERO professors and aeronautics industry experts with their up-to-date knowledge and experience (Airbus Helicopters, Airbus Group, Safran/Turbomeca, Thales, etc.). ⇾ including: lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. From classroom to cockpit: flying activities at ISAE-SUPAERO

Take a video tour of the school's Lasbordes Air Operations Center (COAL). With a fleet of 9 light aircraft, the COAL offers 3 types of activities: - Pilot training to obtain the Private Pilot's License (PPL), which enables students to fly single-engine aircraft. - Practical work directly linked to the school's teaching programs, from flight mechanics to an introduction to flight test techniques for continuing education. - Research into human factors and pilot cognitive mechanisms in real time during flight. At ISAE-SUPAERO, engineering and Master's students are lucky enough to be able to take their pilot's license just a few kilometers from the campus. Several instructors accompany them and train them to fly. All are members of the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Operation Research Department, headed by Valérie Budinger.

The HADA program is accredited by the Conférence des Grandes Écoles and teaches the cutting-edge techniques needed for future aircraft and rotorcraft systems, including the new challenges of urban mobility. 2 learning modes throughout the year: - an academic session from September to March, taught by permanent ISAE-SUPAERO professors and aeronautics industry experts with their up-to-date knowledge and experience (Airbus Helicopters, Airbus Group, Safran/Turbomeca, Thales, etc.). ⇾ including: lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space organize an international training course on space systems

Twenty engineers from the Peruvian space agency CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) attended a training course in Toulouse designed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space! The aim? To develop their skills in space systems and space missions. The entire program was placed under the academic responsibility of AnnaFederica Urbano, a lecturer and researcher in space systems and launchers at ISAE-SUPAERO. The engineers took part in a preliminary satellite design project. At the end of the five-week course, they all obtained the Certificate of Advanced Studies awarded by ISAE-SUPAERO. For ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space, this experience opens up prospects for future collaborations in training courses of this type for international customers and industrial and institutional partners. The HADA program is accredited by the Conférence des Grandes Écoles and teaches the cutting-edge techniques needed for future aircraft and rotorcraft systems, including the new challenges of urban mobility. 2 learning modes throughout the year: - an academic session from September to March, taught by permanent ISAE-SUPAERO professors and aeronautics industry experts with their up-to-date knowledge and experience (Airbus Helicopters, Airbus Group, Safran/Turbomeca, Thales, etc.). ⇾ including: lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. A professional thesis or internship of 4 to 6 months : - in an aerospace company or laboratory - in France or abroad ⇾ supervised by a tutor from the host organization and from ISAE-SUPAERO. The thesis concludes with the submission of a report and an oral dissertation before a thesis committee. ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space organize an international training course on space systems

Twenty engineers from the Peruvian space agency CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) attended a training course in Toulouse designed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space! The aim? To develop their skills in space systems and space missions. The entire program was placed under the academic responsibility of AnnaFederica Urbano, a lecturer and researcher in space systems and launchers at ISAE-SUPAERO. The engineers took part in a preliminary satellite design project. At the end of the five-week course, they all obtained the Certificate of Advanced Studies awarded by ISAE-SUPAERO. For ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space, this experience opens up prospects for future collaborations in training courses of this type for international customers and industrial and institutional partners.
