This Space Summit, or # SpaceSummit, was held in Toulouse on Wednesday, February 16 in the presence of President Emmanuel Macron, Minister Bruno Le Maire, Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA) Josef Aschbacher, European Commissioner Thierry Breton, two astronauts from ESA Luca Parmitano (ISAE-SUPAERO MS 2009 alumni) and Alexander Gerst, 27 European ministers from EU member countries, French elected representatives and deputies and many business leaders from the aerospace industrial fabric!

Our ISAE-SUPAERO delegation, accompanied by David Mimoun, Professor & Head of the Department of Electronics, Optronics and Signal and Alexandra Prax-Huart, in charge of institutional relations, consisted of first and third year students from the engineering course in the field of Design & Operations of Space Systems, the Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering and the Advanced Master TAS Astro.

The day was filled with exchanges and important topics, notably addressed in the speech of President Emmanuel Macron (To watch Emmanuel Macron’s speech on the European Space Strategy at ISAE-SUPAERO):

- Europe as a space power: “We are part of a major European space power thanks to industrial groups, intermediate-sized enterprises, start-ups, laboratories and academics, but Europe has missed certain strategic turning points and competition is increasingly fierce. We must take inspiration from the public resources/velocity model of emerging private actors! And especially on the subject of NewSpace. Because we are competing on our own soil: we have not believed in ourselves sufficiently and have not given ourselves enough credit”.

- constellations of satellites: “These are at the heart of the work of our industry and research organizations and will be at the core of our lives tomorrow. Europe must play its part in this revolution. We must mobilize the entire European sector, and France will be part of this revolution! It’s our duty. This is also a geopolitical project for Europe”.

- reusable launchers: “Europe must also take a decisive step towards reusable micro- and mini-launchers, and we must aim for technological breakthroughs.”

- Earth observation and global warming: “Space can help us measure GHGs, emissions and temperature changes. Space can help us deliver on state commitments to reduce GHGs. Beyond climate, space is also in part a dream… What a power projects into space says a little about what it is. Its relationship to the world.”

- space debris and human and robotic exploration of the solar system: “Our vision is not one of space tourism or economic exploitation, but of a common good that is useful to all. We believe in exploration, in knowledge. This is the European vision, and we are at a crossroads for our Europe.”

Our students were also able to exchange with the President, with Luca Parmitano and with Bruno Le Maire, whom we thank very warmly for this invitation! Read more about the Conclusions of the informal meeting of European space ministers and Emmanuel Macron.

The invitation to this summit was a tremendous opportunity for ISAE-SUPAERO, as a world leader in higher education in aerospace engineering, to affirm its commitments to the issues of the future in terms of space: in terms of instrumentation, comparative planetology, manned flights and sustainability (space debris, earth observation, etc.), but also of new emerging issues, including the whole question of NewSpace and its applications.

With its 38 programs at the engineering, master’s, specialized master’s® & doctoral levels, ISAE-SUPAERO trains engineers, scientists, and managers who will be at the heart of the transformations of the aeronautics and space sector and more generally of the progress of our societies!

We are fully mobilized alongside the public authorities and the French academic, scientific and industrial space ecosystem to meet the challenges ahead!
