Imbued with the pioneering spirit of the aerospace sector

ISAE-SUPAERO offers a range of courses designed to meet the major challenges facing our societies. And there’s no shortage of interest, as evidenced by the renewed attractiveness of its courses! With 356 new students this year, including 61 young women, the General Engineering course has confirmed its excellent level of recruitment. ISAE-SUPAERO continues to rank among the top engineering schools chosen by students leaving preparatory classes (No. 5 for all schools combined).

Start of the academic year 2024 ISAE-SUPAERO

As a sign of the excellence of the Institute’s research activities, 85 doctoral students are joining the campus this year. This figure, which is on the rise (there were 70 for the start of the 2023 academic year), brings the total number of doctoral students in ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories to 285.

The campus is also continuing to expand internationally, with 42% of students coming from 48 countries (up 2 points on the start of the 2023 academic year). They account for 91% of recruits to the Master in Aerospace Engineering (MAE), which has 31 nationalities among its recruits. With 168 students, this 100% English-speaking programme is at full capacity and continues to grow, despite very strong international competition. The 14 Advanced Masters® programmes welcomed 190 new students, the same number as last year.

Diversification of recruitment

Finally, the Institute is diversifying its recruitment. Thirteen of this year’s entrants to the General Engineering programme are university graduates. This diversity is also reflected in the attractiveness of the Industrial Engineering speciality apprenticeship programme. Launched in 2020 and deployed in three ISAE Group schools, this course is open to DUT/BUT (68% of recruitment this year) and licence (13% of recruitment) students, in addition to preparatory classes. For the start of the new academic year, 74 new students will be enrolled (20% of them women), including 30 on the ISAE-SUPAERO campus alone.

Figures for 2024

The ISAE-SUPAERO campus welcomes nearly 1,930 students this year:

  • 1,040 in the General Engineering programme (including 356 new students);
  • 96 in the Advanced Engineering apprenticeship programme (30 new students);
  • 315 in the Master in Aerospace Engineering programme, including 168 new students (91% of them international);
  • 190 on all 14 Advanced Masters® programmes;
  • 285 PhD students, including 85 recruited this year.

Graduates: three-quarters of students find a job before completing their studies

ISAE-SUPAERO’s training programmes ensure that young graduates find exceptional employment, in line with their expectations.

According to the Institute’s 2024 “First Job” survey, 74.5% of graduates from all courses found a job even before graduation, and 88% said they were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their first job. The Aeronautics/Space/Defence (ASD) sector, driven by strong growth momentum and engaged in an exceptional period of transformation, attracted 70% of our young 2023 graduates, all courses taken together. This was followed by the ecological transition (6%) and energy (5%).

ISAE-SUPAERO management: Olivier Lesbre hands over the reins to Marie-Hélène Baroux

A historic date for ISAE-SUPAERO

On Tuesday 10 September, after ten years as Director General of the Institute, Olivier Lesbre, an armament engineer, handed over the reins to his successor, Marie-Hélène Baroux. The Institute’s new Director General praised the legacy of her predecessor, who “placed the Institute at the global forefront of aerospace engineering training”. Also a weapons engineer, she will be responsible for continuing the transformation of the Institute in a context of competition and major societal changes.

“The Institute is at a very important point in its history,” said Marwan Lahoud, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ISAE-SUPAERO. “We need to reinvent both aviation in a finite world and the way we learn and teach.”

A change of dimension

These changes were initiated under the leadership of Olivier Lesbre, who was “determined to open up new horizons and develop partnerships”, emphasised Caroline Krykwinski, Director of Human Resources at the French Defence Procurement Agency (Direction Générale de l’Armement). In the space of a decade, ISAE-SUPAERO has changed dimension, “considerably enriching its range of training courses, increasing the density of its research activities and repositioning the school at international level”.

Caroline Krykwinski also paid tribute to Olivier Lesbre’s “high level of professionalism”, as his ten years at the head of ISAE-SUPAERO marked the end of a career “serving the general interest, aeronautics and the world of defence”. The now ex-CEO emphasised two points that are close to his heart: “promoting the French model of educational excellence that the preparatory classes and the Grandes Écoles represent” and “supporting the aeronautical sector by responding to the new challenges it is facing”.

Major challenges

Marie-Hélène Baroux knows all about these challenges, having served as Deputy Director General of ISAE-SUPAERO between 2019 and 2021. Aware of the Institute’s “considerable societal impact”, she also emphasised the new geopolitical issues it will have to address. She, who had a long career with the DGA, stressed “the strengthening of the Institute’s links with defence, in particular with the introduction of new courses”. She also emphasised “the consolidation of alliances with our partners in the aerospace industry”.

“In a context of rapid change, for both aeronautics and space, we have a duty to provide our industrial and technological base with engineers of the highest scientific level, who are passionate about the aerospace sector, master the complexity of systems, possess the keys to innovate and find solutions, and are aware that they are at the service of tomorrow’s society”, she insisted.

Diversification of profiles

The first woman to head ISAE-SUPAERO, she also advocates “increasing the diversity of profiles, which is difficult in the aerospace sector”: “Diversity brings richness, in the sharing of points of view and ideas, it stimulates and strengthens innovation as well as collective intelligence; I can testify to this through my own professional career”.

Our Consultative Bodies

Our Education Council relies on the advice of our development councils for engineering education cycles and associated complementary education, as well as for international Master's and Advanced Master's programmes.

For other programmes (initial, continuing, apprenticeship, etc.) to which our Institute contributes without being solely responsible, our ISAE-SUPAERO Education Council relies as necessary on the opinions of the professional development councils or similar bodies set up by the accrediting institution, or jointly by the partners in the programme concerned.

Our Development Boards are chaired by the Director of Education or their representative.

Each development committee is led by the programme head for the course for which they are responsible.

Our Development Councils are convened by the Chairman as often as required for the smooth running of the Institute and at least once a year.

In addition to the Institute staff responsible for the academic management of the various programmes concerned, their membership includes:

  • qualified persons representing industry, academia, and international circles, appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Dean of Academics; and
  • student delegates representing the various classes and categories of students, appointed by the students themselves.

Our Councils are not elected and do not take formal votes. Their work, the advice they receive, and any recommendations they make are set out in minutes drawn up under the responsibility of the Chair and approved at the following meeting. They are reported to the Education Council.

Each Development Committee, for the programmes within its jurisdiction, gives its opinion on:

  • changes to teaching programmes, the range of programmes offered, and the possibilities for career paths;
  • proposed changes to tuition regulations, where applicable; and
  • academic partnerships and exchange agreements (with or without qualifications) relating to a course of study.

It examines the reports and recommendations resulting from audits and from the processes of authorisation, accreditation, or awarding of labels (CTI, HCERES, CGE, etc.) and is consulted on the proposed follow-up.

Our Innovation Council is a non-statutory consultative body. The Innovation Council is a forum for exchange and forward thinking, partly made up of outside figures in the field of innovation. Its purpose is to inform and guide the Institute's actions in this area.

Our Innovation Council has 21 members.

Marie-Hélène Baroux, new Director General of ISAE-SUPAERO!

"If someone had told me at the start of my career that I would be doing this job, I wouldn't have believed them. But I have the impression that my career path has naturally led me here."

In the right place, at the right time: it is with serenity and “a great deal of pride” that Marie-Hélène Baroux, a general weapons engineer, has taken up her post as Director General of ISAE-SUPAERO on 1ᵉʳ August 2024. She succeeds Olivier Lesbre, who left his mark on the Institute (2014-2024).

A native of Toulouse and the mother of three children, she knows the Institut well and is very fond of it for several reasons. Her father, Jean Pinet, a test pilot on Concorde, came through Supaéro and its student clubs. Marie-Hélène Baroux partly followed in his footsteps, taking advantage of the opportunity during her studies at Télécom Paris to do her third year at the Toulouse school, where she went on to do a Master’s degree (1993).

Her name is also associated with ISAE-SUPAERO, where she was Deputy Director from 2019 to 2021. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, “I was responsible for the crisis unit and for preserving students’ living and studying conditions”, she explains. She was also responsible for implementing the Horizons roadmap, ISAE-SUPAERO’s strategy for sustainable development. It’s a subject close to her heart.

Specialist in aerospace engineering and telecommunications

But let’s go back to 1993. After completing her higher education, Marie-Hélène Baroux joined the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA), where she spent “a long career”. Her dual specialisation in telecommunications and aerospace engineering is a distinctive feature of her career, as she has held alternating positions in these two sectors. This diversity of points of view “has served her well and the projects I’ve worked on”, she says.

At DGA, she was in charge of expertise and tests in the field of electromagnetic compatibility at the Toulouse Aerospace Test Centre (CEAT, now DGA Techniques aérospatiales). As part of DGA’s Operations Division, she also took charge of the CERES programme, a constellation of three electromagnetic intelligence satellites. Four years later, as part of DGA’s strategy department, she steered the ramp-up of European cooperation on weapons programmes.

She also worked at ONERA and OCCAr (Organisation conjointe de coopération en matière d’armement), where she was responsible for setting up the cybersecurity and IT security aspects of the avionics and ground systems for the A400M military aircraft.

Solid management experience

Another special feature of Marie-Hélène Baroux’s career is that “I’ve been through all the stages of management, from small teams to project management to running a test centre”, experiences that have nurtured her thinking on management: “Working on management means working on people. Just before her appointment to the General Management of ISAE-SUPAERO, she worked in the Human Resources Department of the DGA, where her main missions were to consolidate the managerial function, transform working methods towards more collaborative working and deploy hybrid working.”

In her new role, she will be looking to train future engineers for positions of responsibility. “Engineers have an important technical role, but many of them are also involved in management.” Today’s manufacturers are keen to develop soft skills, and with the right method, we can provide a different kind of management that benefits everyone.

Engineers have an important technical role, but many of them are also involved in management. Today’s industrialists are keen on soft skills, and with the right method, we can provide a different kind of management that benefits everyone.

“Maintaining the aerospace industry’s place in the world”

Marie-Hélène Baroux has a major ally in her new role: the 2022-2026 Contract of Objectives and Performance (COP), which sets out the Institute’s strategic objectives. “It’s a very structuring document that is heading in the right direction”, she says, adding that she will be paying close attention to “strengthening certain areas”.

“First of all, there is the consolidation of our relations with defence”, she notes, emphasising the need to strengthen the Institute’s links with its supervisory ministry. “The aerospace skills of the engineers we train can play an important role in a troubled international context.”

She also emphasised ISAE-SUPAERO’s “major role” in supporting Europe’s aerospace industry: “We have a duty to provide it with the talent it needs to maintain its place among the world’s best.” She also wants to work to strengthen the Institute’s links with the space industry, “a highly competitive and rapidly changing sector”.

We have a duty to provide the European aerospace industry with the talent it needs to maintain its place among world leaders.
Marie-Hélène Baroux points to the ISAE Group, which brings together the French aeronautical and space engineering schools under a common banner, as a major asset in meeting the needs of industry for training in aeronautics and space. “The ISAE Group meets a key challenge for the aerospace industry in terms of the diversity of skills and profiles it needs. It already brings this diversity together, and in particular has created an engineering apprenticeship programme, which is very popular today”.

The rapprochement of ISAE-SUPAERO with ENAC, in a context of rapid change in the higher education landscape, will be one of his priority projects: “This rapprochement is important for thinking about the air transport of tomorrow and for developing the skills and research that the sector needs to transform itself.”

Top-level engineers to “transform our society”

In addition to the Institute’s contribution to the air transport, space and defence sectors, she also emphasises ISAE-SUPAERO’s role in training engineers capable of meeting the challenges of tomorrow’s world. Training high-level engineers means preparing for the future by providing the thinking matter and talent that will help “shape the world we live in,” she stresses. The aerospace sector is often the source of cutting-edge technologies that will then permeate the whole of society. Training in aerospace engineering means seizing the opportunity to transform our society with new approaches.

The aerospace sector is often the source of cutting-edge technologies that then permeate society as a whole. Training in aerospace engineering means seizing the opportunity to transform our society with new approaches.
Finally, Marie-Hélène Baroux attaches particular importance to the diversity of profiles: “As a woman in a very male-dominated environment, I can testify to the strength of gender diversity.” As Deputy Director of the Institute, she worked closely with the Institute’s social outreach programme, OSE l’ISAE-SUPAERO. “The name is well chosen. There’s a place for everyone in aerospace engineering, you just have to dare!”

Meeting with Laurent Michel

Laurent Michel graduated from INSA in 1987 with a degree in physical engineering, specialising in materials for electronics (DEA). He then went on to do a PhD on the study of the anelastic behaviour of polymer matrix composite materials by thermo-stimulated creep, funded by DGA-DRET, in the solid state physics laboratory at Paul Sabatier University.

In 1993, he joined ENSICA’s Mechanical Engineering department to teach mechanics and launch the school’s first research activities in the field of organic matrix composites.

A professor of structural mechanics and materials, in 2019 he became head of the Department of Structural Mechanics and Materials (DMSM) at ISAE-SUPAERO. Since 1 July, he has been head of the general engineering training programme at ISAE-SUPAERO.

You have been Head of the ISAE-SUPAERO General Engineer training programme since 1 July. What will your duties involve?

The main tasks of this new post concern the day-to-day running of the general engineering course. But the essential and immediate challenge is to overhaul this curriculum, incorporating a skills-based approach. New technologies (quantum, AI, cybersecurity, etc.), the energy transition and environmental and social issues will also have to find their place in this new formula for the curriculum, without losing its DNA.

How does this new position fit in with your career path?

I’ve been a professor of structural mechanics and materials since 1993, first at ENSICA, then at ISAE-SUPAERO. I have also developed research activities, mainly around the damage tolerance of composite materials and their mechanical behaviour in fatigue or under the effect of the environment.

In terms of training, I have been responsible for a number of tasks in the general engineering curriculum, including setting up a specific 2nd year course in structural design (120 hours) when the ENSICA curriculum was overhauled, recruiting engineering students on the basis of competitive examinations and admissions on the basis of qualifications, and setting up the Validation of Acquired Experience.

Finally, since the merger of the SUPAERO and ENSICA engineering programmes in 2015, I have taken on the role of training coordinator for the Structures and Materials Mechanics Department (DMSM), and then I have been responsible for the common scientific core module on the mechanics of deformable solids in the General Engineering programme, and co-responsibility for the 3rd year ‘Structures and Materials’ course.

How do you see your new responsibilities?

It will be an opportunity for me to get closer to all our students and explore their expectations of the Institute. I’ll be passing on a bit more, and in a different way. Finally, I attach a great deal of importance to the feeling of ownership, particularly among the teaching staff: I think it’s important that the teachers and students are in tune with each other and that they enjoy what they do.

Supplier Speed Meeting: another success for ISAE-SUPAERO’s innovative event on public procurement!

Publication Date

This day, organised by ISAE-SUPAERO’s purchasing department in partnership with ENAC and CNRS Toulouse, is a unique opportunity to develop collaborations with suppliers on targeted purchasing projects.

A reverse sourcing approach

Speed Meeting Suppliers 2024 | ISAE-SUPAERO
For the past three years, ISAE-SUPAERO has been offering an innovative reverse sourcing format, organised by the Institute’s purchasing department. The idea? The idea is to bring potential service providers to the Institute to facilitate contacts between suppliers, specifiers and buyers.

The Supplier Speed Meeting provides an opportunity to find out more about companies’ solutions and their specific technical requirements. By adopting an innovative approach to public procurement, ISAE-SUPAERO is emphasising a targeted definition of requirements that is as close as possible to the economic offer, and that is co-constructed by the stakeholders involved in the purchasing process.

“This event is the best way to achieve quality sourcing between buyers and specifiers,” comments Anne Couderc, Head of Purchasing at ISAE-SUPAERO. “This year, we are particularly interested in purchases related to photovoltaic energy to develop our energy at the Institute, digital tools for human resources development and reused furniture”.

60 companies hosted on campus

Speed Meeting Suppliers 2024 | ISAE-SUPAERO
Sixty companies were welcomed to the ISAE-SUPAERO campus by the purchasing department’s organising team, from fields as varied as re-use furniture, photovoltaic shades, scientific equipment hire, events, co-optation schemes, IT intellectual services, etc. Institutional players, including Toulouse Métropole Emploi and the Réseau des achats durables en Occitanie (Rés’OCC), also took part in the event.

Institutional players, including Toulouse Métropole Emploi and the Réseau des achats durables en Occitanie (Rés’OCC), also took part in the event.

A day that confirms its success year after year!

An award-winning approach

In 2021, ISAE-SUPAERO organised an experimental Supplier Speed Meeting. The Conseil National des Achats and Décision Achat Public awarded the Institute a Supplier Relations Trophy in recognition of this reverse sourcing approach.

Marc Pélegrin, former Director of SupAéro and ONERA-CERT

He has helped to make Toulouse the European capital of aeronautics and space. More specifically, Professor Marc Pélegrin’s innovative vision has kept SupAéro at the forefront of higher education in aeronautics and space. He was responsible for the school’s successful move from Paris to Toulouse and for the creation of the ONERA-CERT centre on the same site. In this way, he revolutionised engineering training by merging training and research activities on the same campus.

As a scientist, Marc Pélegrin has also made a major contribution to research in the aeronautics and space sectors. A former student of Polytechnique and SupAéro (then located in Paris), he first taught at SupAéro, in the field of servo-controls and calculating machines. The research he initiated developed over the decades, opening up a wide range of perspectives.

It was in 1964 that he was asked to lead the transfer of SupAéro to Toulouse, against a backdrop of decentralisation. Although there was little enthusiasm for the project, Marc Pélegrin immediately set himself up as a visionary, seeing in his mission “the possibility of achieving what had struck me so much in the USA”, at MIT, where he had completed his studies: combining training and research. “At that institute, research and teaching were completely intertwined, and students often took part in research work”. As a result, he was able to convince the government to create a study and research centre in symbiosis with the school, under the authority of a joint director.

"I saw in this mission the possibility of realising what had struck me so much in the USA, when in 1945-50 I had the chance to complete my studies at MIT. At that institute, research and teaching were completely intertwined, and students often took part in research work.

Marc Pélegrin Former Director of SupAéro and ONERA-CERT

In terms of training, Marc Pélegrin has also seen things through: while SupAéro’s classes numbered barely 100 students, the school has three 200-seat lecture theatres, student residences, remarkable sports facilities and a Nord 262 aircraft for in-flight practical work. What’s more, the complementary relationship between CERT and SupAéro quickly made the school a pioneer among engineering schools: in 1974, SupAéro was one of the first to be accredited to award doctoral degrees in engineering.

Marc Pélegrin was joint director of the two institutions from 1968 to 1978, and then of ONERA-CERT until 1988. Over the years, SupAéro has trained hundreds of engineers who have gone on to contribute to the extraordinary success of the French aerospace industry. CERT also made a significant contribution, in particular through the pioneering work carried out in Marc Pélegrin’s scientific field of automatic control.

A centenary tribute in 2023, a Marc Pélegrin prize in 2024

On November 28, Marc Pélegrin’s 100th birthday was celebrated on the ISAE-SUPAERO campus in the presence of his family, former students and colleagues. This day, which he was unable to attend due to his state of health, highlighted the richness, importance and variety of the activities that have developed on the basis of his work and which today remain at the forefront of the world, both in the field of training and research, at ISAE-SUPAERO, ONERA and other laboratories.

On this occasion, ISAE-SUPAERO and ONERA announced the creation of a “Marc Pélegrin Prize”, to be awarded from 2024 onwards at international EuroGNC conferences for outstanding scientific contributions in the field of automatic control applied to the aerospace sector.

Meeting with Marwan Lahoud

You graduated from ISAE-SUPAERO in 1989 and have been at the head of the Board since 28 August. Why did you accept this mandate? What are your ambitions for the School?

Getting involved in the School’s governing bodies is a way of giving back a little of what the Institute has given me. I learnt my trade there, and thanks to it I had my first experiences in aeronautics.

Aeronautics and space are undergoing a revolution, and we need to attract talent to these fields more than ever. Our mission is to ensure that young women and men with an appetite for science and technology are enchanted and dream of flying – just like I did when I was their age!

As Chairman of the Board, my role is to steer the governance of the School, to participate in and facilitate the definition of a strategy and to assist the management in its execution. There can be no good strategy without the resources to back it up. We have the unfailing support of the Ministry of the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, but raising private funds is essential, and I will be looking at these aspects as a priority.

Historically, ISAE-SUPAERO has strong links with the French aerospace industry and has provided it with its great pioneers and leaders. The worldwide influence of the School and the French aerospace industry are closely linked, and it is certainly this model of ‘French engineering’ applied to such demanding fields that today positions ISAE-SUPAERO among the few French higher education and research establishments whose recognition extends well beyond our borders. Today, ISAE-SUPAERO’s work and talent continue to influence the aerospace industry and research, not only in France but also in Europe.

The pillars of the Institute are training, research and innovation: what are the School’s major challenges in each of these areas, to keep pace with the changes in the sector?

Our ambition is to be the world’s leading aerospace training institute and to attract the best students from all 5 continents. To achieve this, our training must be world-class. We have a very high quality teaching staff, and we need to give them the resources to maintain the level of excellence for which the School is renowned.

As far as research is concerned, I have seen the high level of scientific production at ISAE-SUPAERO. We need to develop and accentuate this, because we can’t conceive of training at the highest level in the world without research of the same quality. The two are intimately connected.

With regard to the last pillar, I was attracted not only by everything that revolves around entrepreneurship and innovation, but also by the encouragement that students receive from professors and the entire ecosystem of the school to launch innovative projects and start-ups. We must continue to offer them this favourable environment. Our reputation must act as an accelerator and facilitator for these promising young start-ups to find funding, support and markets.

In your opinion, what are the assets of an ISAE-SUPAERO graduate to face the major challenges of tomorrow’s industry and society? Do engineers have a special role to play?

Today, we are witnessing a shift in the challenges facing modern society, which is putting the engineer back at the centre of this evolution. After a period focused on management and administration, when it came to decarbonisation, digitisation and the resumption of space exploration and conquest, science and technological development are back in the limelight. Engineers hold the keys to meeting these challenges.

Take decarbonisation, for example. ISAE-SUPAERO engineers naturally have a major role to play in this revolution. Despite changes in behaviour and the implementation of energy-saving measures, the demand for air travel will continue to grow, particularly in regions outside Europe. ISAE-SUPAERO engineers have a historic responsibility to the planet and to society, because they have the means to design the low-carbon aircraft of tomorrow.

Could you tell us about your career path and the reasons behind your choices?

I started out as a test engineer at the Landes Test Centre within DGA, a position with a strong technical dimension. If I have one piece of advice to give to young graduates and students, it’s not to be in too much of a hurry to get into management. The best years of my professional life were spent on technical matters and watching things fly!

I then took up a position with the French government and later switched to aircraft manufacturing, because I was afraid of becoming a technocrat and I wanted to get back to basics. So I joined AIRBUS (formerly Aérospatiale, Matra and EADS). In 2017, I decided to evolve my profession, and I joined Tikehau Capital to work on financing the aerospace industry. We are now one of the leading investors in this field.

What is your best memory of ISAE-SUPAERO?

I’d say two of them: the friendships I made and the community life. I was an Armament engineer and didn’t live on campus. That didn’t stop me from having a full social life as well as a rich academic life. I spent a lot of time in the halls of residence and in the hostel, and in the very first week I joined the rugby team. We took part in sporting events all over the region, and travelled to England, Ireland and Scotland: I have some unforgettable memories. I wouldn’t be complete without mentioning our third-year studies inspector and rugby coach Joël Daste, with whom I’ve kept in touch to this day. The friends I made then are still the friends I make today. Among them, I would like to mention Valérie Guillemet, HR Director at Dassault Aviation, who also recently joined the School’s Board.
