The CEDAR Chair, a response to environmental issues in the aeronautics sector.
Chair for Eco-Design of AIRcraft
In 2013, ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus created the CEDAR Chair for Eco-Design of AiRcraft, with the aim of defining disruptive concepts for air transport by introducing innovative technologies right from the aircraft design stage.

In 2019, they are renewing their partnership and taking up the major orientations of previous years by integrating a more global approach to environmental engineering. The CEDAR Chair is helping to raise awareness and train future aeronautical engineers in the sustainable development of air transport.
The Chair has four major programmes:
Offered to 3rd year students, the certificate opens up to the issues of sustainable development, offers an approach to aircraft design over the entire product life cycle, and covers eco-mobility and the economics of air transport.
In all, more than 95 students have been introduced to eco-design since the certificate was launched.
The aim of the "International merit-based scholarship" programme is to attract and select foreign students of the highest international calibre to join ISAE-SUPAERO's programmes dedicated to aircraft design. Within the framework of the CEDAR 2 Chair, the scholarships will not only be open to foreign students enrolling in the Aerospace & Engineering Master's programme, but also to those in the engineering cycle.
The programme of interdisciplinary student projects in the 'Future Aircraft Design' field are derived from concrete industrial cases around the theme of the Chair. Each year, around twenty students take part, alone or in groups, in these projects, which last between 2 and 12 months. These projects focus on 3 main areas: design, technologies and operations.
One of the priorities of the Research strand is to propose technological developments that will contribute to the implementation of air transport solutions that will reduce its ecological footprint.
Two major projects are currently underway and are continuing with CEDAR2. The first is a BWB (Blended Wing Body) flying wing, i.e. with an integrated fuselage, and the second is a distributed propeller aircraft. It consists of a wing with eight small engines.
