HERA Hybrid Electric Regional Aircraft IPROP CONCERTO Construction Of Novel CERTificationmethOds and means of compliance for disruptive technologies The IPROP project, part of theHorizon Europe Pathfinder framework, aims to raise the level ofmaturity of atmospheric ion thrusters for aeronautics. Bringing together researchers from Italy, Germany, Belgiumand France, including teams from ISAE-SUPAERO, École Polytechnique and the Toulouse Institute of FluidMechanics, IPROP’s primary ambition is to develop optimized propulsion units and implement themon an ion-powered airship demonstrator. Ultimately, the goal is to design a full-scale stratospheric airship with great autonomy thanks to solar-powered ion thrusters. These latter could serve as alternative stratospheric platforms formany satellite functions, such as telecommunications or remote sensing, withmuch lower costs and the advantage of being recoverable. Ion thrusters, with nomoving parts, guarantee robustness and silent propulsionwith lowCO2 emissions. Moreover, the study of this technology opens up awide scientific field that covers fundamental research on ion production, its couplingwith airflow, electrode optimization and finally aircraft integration. ISAE-SUPAERO is participating in the European project CONCERTOof the Clean Aviation program, led by Dassault and involving 32 partners. Benefiting froma strong collaborationwith the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), it aims to build new certification methods and newmeans of demonstrating compliance for the 3 disruptive aircraft concepts identified by Clean Aviation: the hybrid-electric regional aircraft, the optimized Short-Medium-Range aircraft and the hydrogen-powered aircraft. ISAE-SUPAERO is participating in thework on the hydrogen aircraft coordinated by Airbus. Challenges: to define an architectural concept incorporating hydrogen technologies, formalize the expected safety objectives, analyze existing regulations in order to identify gaps andmajor risks, and prepare the development of the regulatory corpus for certification. 3 European projects ISAE-SUPAEROwill participate in the European project HORIZON-JU-Clean-Aviation HERA, with a budget of €35million, coordinated by the Italianmanufacturer Leonardo. It brings together 40 partners. HERA aims to identify hybrid-electric regional aircraft concepts flying over typical distances of less than 500 kilometers and capable of addressing climate issues. Objective: to evaluate key technologies and architectures in order to propose a range of regional-interurban transport solutions for the 2030s. ISAE-SUPAEROwill be involved in studies of the overall and optimized design of the aircraft, with a particular focus on the integration of high aspect ratiowings and thermal management solutions. This activity will allow the extension of projects already carried out by the Aircraft Design and Flight Dynamics teamof the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Control Department (DCAS), such as the Clean Sky U-HARWARD project. One of themajor challenges for the team is to strengthen the capabilities of the open platform for preliminary aircraft design, FAST-OAD, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO andONERA andwhichwill be implemented in HERA. 26 ISAE-SUPAERO ANNUAL REPORT 2022 Research / Projects & Equipment
