with the MS SPAPS of ISAE-SUPAERO in partnership with AIRBUS

At a time when space applications are seeking to make life on Earth better, safer and more pleasant, the space industry is looking for engineers to define, develop and operate all the services that Earth observation and telecommunications satellites have to offer.

The ADVANCED MASTER® in SPACE APPLICATIONS & SERVICES (SPAPS), created by ISAE-SUPAERO in partnership with AIRBUS DEFENCE & SPACE, is a one-year program that provides the necessary skills for the design, development and integration of various kinds of civilian and defense space applications.

The SPAPS ADVANCED MASTER®, taught in English, is open to new graduates at the Master’s level and to French and foreign professionals involved in implementing space applications.

At the end of this program, which ensures a high level of expertise, the graduates’ profile will meet the needs of the space industry in France and abroad : satellite operators, public institutions, and companies developing or selling new services and applications. These professionals are qualified for positions as Project Leaders, Business Engineers, Business Development Managers, Consulting Managers, Research Engineers and Experts in Space Applications.

Students have carried out their end-of-studies projects at Airbus Defence & Space, CNES, Airbus DS GEO, SODERN Ariane Group and THALES AVIONICS.

Statement from Ville Meskus, class of 2020, Senior Product Manager,

“I’ve always been passionate about human activity in space, but I had not worked in the field before starting this program at ISAE-SUPAERO. After completing my previous master’s degree in industrial engineering and management in Finland, I worked in several countries and different industries as a consultant and in product management. Then, I decided to follow my passion and applied for several different aerospace schools. Ultimately, I chose ISAE-SUPAERO for its positioning as one of the top aerospace schools in the world and a central player in the European aerospace industry.

I chose this Advanced Master’s program as I believe we need to further develop the human footprint in space in order to accelerate our technological progress and safeguard both our species and Earth. To achieve this, we need to push our boundaries further and find more ways to benefit from the space frontier. This is a program that sets out to do exactly that. The close cooperation we had with industry players such as Airbus was key to ensuring that our approach to the domain is up to date with industry demands and the latest knowledge.

My objective when I joined the program was to develop a deep understanding of how we can design and build satellites and use them to extract value from space. The program provided exactly that, giving me all the keys I need to unlock an international career in space industry. The two biggest highlights for me were the extensive cooperation with Airbus, CNES (the French space agency) and other key partners, as well as getting an integral view on the whole value chain of the satellite business. Our learning extended from the basic technical details of designing and building satellites and their payloads to how to use those payloads to create and operate a business. In practical exercises, we used the same tools used by industry professionals.

For the rest of my career and life, I want to play a major part in humanity’s expansion into space. As long as I’m helping us do that, I know I’m doing exactly what I’ve always wanted to do. I believe that attending this program has been a key stepping stone for me on the path to achieving this.”
