What is your background?

After taking my baccalauréat S in the Lyon region, I enrolled at ESTACA (an aeronautical engineering school) as a post-baccalaureate student. After graduating, I continued my studies by enrolling in the Advanced Master® TAS AERO FTE at ISAE-SUPAERO.

Why did you join the Advanced Master® TAS AERO FTE?

I’ve always been attracted to the world of testing, so I decided to apply for the Advanced Master® TAS AERO, Flight Test Engineering (FTE) option, with the aim of discovering the world of testing from a theoretical point of view, but also from a practical point of view, thanks to the number of flights I made during the course.

What do you see as the strengths of this programme?

Being able to take to the skies to apply the theory we’ve learned on the ground is one of the very positive aspects of the Master. In my opinion, there’s nothing better than putting into practice the theoretical concepts covered during the year.

What’s more, thanks to the master’s degree, you get to see the whole chain (V cycle) from design to certification, via flight preparation, then production and finally data processing and writing the test report. One of the great assets of this Master’s programme is the diversity of the contributions made by people from industry in a wide range of fields.

Could you tell us more about the FTE major? How has it helped you in your career and in your current position?

Discovering how to prepare, carry out and analyse test flights, as well as learning certain test techniques, gave me my first taste of the world of flight testing. The global vision of the world of testing that the Master’s provides also helps me to gain credibility at job interviews.

What are your next career objectives?

For the last year and a half, I’ve been working as a LFTE (Lead Flight Test Engineer) at DGA Flight Tests in Cazaux, in the Embedded Weapons Systems department. I’m looking forward to continuing my varied activities, particularly on armed helicopters, because of my recent appointment to this post!

About the Advanced Master® TAS AERO FTE

The Advanced Master® in Aeronautical Engineering, accredited by the Conférence des Grandes Écoles under no. 50, is a course in aeronautics that provides a broad knowledge of aerospace engineering and the aeronautical industry.

This aeronautics course develops an integrated approach to aircraft product design. It prepares participants to work on multidisciplinary aeronautical projects with a practical approach.

The FTE - Fligt Test Engineering option provides an introduction to flight test methods, but does not lead directly to an aircrew qualification. However, after a few years working for a manufacturer or government test centre, some of our graduates may be selected for training as experimental test pilots or flight test engineers.

From classroom to cockpit: flying activities at ISAE-SUPAERO

Take a video tour of the school's Lasbordes Air Operations Center (COAL). With a fleet of 9 light aircraft, the COAL offers 3 types of activities: - Pilot training to obtain the Private Pilot's License (PPL), which enables students to fly single-engine aircraft. - Practical work directly linked to the school's teaching programs, from flight mechanics to an introduction to flight test techniques for continuing education. - Research into human factors and pilot cognitive mechanisms in real time during flight. At ISAE-SUPAERO, engineering and Master's students are lucky enough to be able to take their pilot's license just a few kilometers from the campus. Several instructors accompany them and train them to fly. All are members of the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Operation Research Department, headed by Valérie Budinger.

Arnaud Prost, ESA reserve astronaut and ISAE-SUPAERO alumnus: “I was incredibly lucky to be here”

Fighter pilot and reserve astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), Arnaud Prost returned to his former school on Thursday March 28 to meet 200 secondary school students as part of the ISAE SUPAERO OSE program. It was an opportunity for him to recall the “great memories” of his student experience at ISAE-SUPAERO, his long-standing commitment to the student social outreach program and the “Aquanauts” scheme he set up with OSE l'ISAE-SUPAERO. And in passing, he offers a few words of advice to young people who might dream of following in his footsteps: “Don't let yourself be convinced that one of these paths isn't for you!” A 2017 graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, Arnaud Prost is among those selected for the ESA Astronaut Class of 2022, alongside Sophie Adenot and Anthea Comellini, both also alumni of the school. They join other illustrious ESA astronauts who have already studied at the school: Thomas Pesquet, Luca Parmitano and Samantha Cristoforetti. Since 1970, ISAE-SUPAERO has contributed to the progress of the space age through its training, research and innovation activities. "Défi Aérospatial Étudiant 2025": Dassault Aviation Prize awarded to an ISAE-SUPAERO student team

As part of the integrated team project of the Institute's TAS ASTRO master's program, a team of student engineers developed the OSIRIS space shuttle, taking part in the Student Aerospace Challenge, an international competition. 3 questions to Marie Delaroche, 3ᵉ year student and MDRS 293 crew commander

Since February 18, seven ISAE-SUPAERO engineering students have been living a simulated Martian life and carrying out experiments in collaboration with CNES and several research laboratories at The Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in UTAH (USA)! For the second time, the mission is led by a woman: Marie Delaroche, a passionate #spaceexplorer, who was already part of crew 275 departing in 2023. We asked her 3 questions to find out more about the challenges of this mission and her feelings as #flightcommander! Alongside her, three young women and three young men in their 2ᵉ year of #engineering studies have taken on the roles of astronomer, scientist, botanist, journalist, health worker and onboard engineer. They are all members of the Mars Club ISAE-SUPAERO, a student association for the popularization of science focused on the Red Planet and the missions dedicated to its exploration and study. They are currently experimenting with AI4U, the artificial intelligence that assists astronauts in their daily tasks (environmental measurements, voice recognition, emergency exercises). They are also conducting a science popularization experiment in collaboration with secondary school pupils. Inspired by the film The Martian, in which an astronaut grows potatoes on the Red Planet, the aim of this experiment is to compare plant growth in Martian soil with growth in terrestrial soil! Feedback: a Latecoere engineer in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories

To strengthen the links between industry and research, more than 10 industrial R&D engineers have been made available to ISAE-SUPAERO as part of the France Relance plan! Cyril Geneste, research engineer at Latecoere, is one of them. Together with Miguel Charlotte, Associate Professor at the Institute, he looks back on this fruitful two-year collaboration. Their work, carried out in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories, focused on the behavior of aircraft door seals, which ensure cabin airtightness. Thanks to the Institute's cutting-edge equipment and academic expertise, Cyril Geneste was able in particular to carry out numerical modeling of seals in order to test their behavior. Meeting with Joseph Risson, engineering student and winner of a scholarship for his Viraj H2 project

On Friday, 8 December, the Swiss Jean-Jacques and Felicia Lopez-Loreta Foundation for Academic Excellence awarded a prize to Viraj H2, a project developed at ISAE-SUPAERO. Joseph Risson, a third-year engineering student, is studying a hybridisation between a hydrogen turboprop engine and a fuel cell in order to accelerate the decarbonisation of air transport. The €1 million grant will enable Joseph and his partner Paul de Goÿs to validate the technology behind their innovation.

Interview with Valérie Guillemet (S1988), HR Director at Dassault Aviation, new member of the Board of Directors

Valérie Guillemet, ISAE-SUPAERO alumni (S1988), has just joined the ISAE-SUPAERO Board of Directors. She was also the guest of honour of the graduating class of 2023. She talks about her career at Dassault Aviation up to the position of HR Director, the challenge of recruiting women engineers and her commitment to the school.

Could you tell us about your academic and professional background?

Valérie Guillemet: After a science preparatory course at Versailles, I graduated from Supaéro in 1988. I started my career at Dassault Aviation as an aerodynamic synthesis engineer in Saint-Cloud, where I worked on the HERMES space shuttle project.

I then moved into production at Mérignac, where I worked on the integration of weapons systems for the Mirage 2000 and Rafale. After some fifteen years in the military sector, I took over management of the Rafale production unit, followed by the Falcon. I became Production Manager at the Mérignac plant, and then finally Director of the whole site.

I’ve always been highly motivated by the interest of the job, by the new challenges and what they bring: getting out of your comfort zone, having different fields of action, meeting new people.

In 2019, I was appointed Director of Human Resources. This field has little to do with my initial training. But, as my assignments have progressed, I have acquired a very good knowledge of Dassault Aviation’s businesses and have a very pragmatic vision of them. The heart of the company is the men and women who run it. Skills development is at the heart of the HR mission, all the more so in a company with a strong technological dimension. We need successful recruitment, relevant training and career paths that meet both the needs of the company and the aspirations of our employees. These issues are of particular concern to me.

As HR Director, you have had to deal with recruitment issues for young women engineers and scientists. What steps have you been able to take?

V. G. : First of all, I’m deeply convinced that diversity is an asset. Men and women, we each have our glasses, our emotional intelligence, our differences which, paradoxically, bring us closer together, enabling us to be better and more effective together.

The industry as a whole recognises that scientific studies are still too often neglected by women. We need to work upstream, in secondary schools. That’s why we’re working with associations such as “Elles bougent”, which organise events in schools to explain the exceptional careers that are possible in industry and technology, for both men and women. We take part in round tables and career presentations. We’d really like to welcome more female profiles because I’m convinced of the strong contribution women can make. Dassault Aviation is a company where great careers are offered to motivated and competent men and women.

You were recently appointed to the Board of Directors of ISAE-SUPAERO. You are also involved with "ISAELLES" and "Ose l'ISAE-SUPAERO". What does this commitment to the school mean to you?

V. G.: ISAE-SUPAERO is a very important school for Dassault Aviation, given the very high level of the engineers it trains. My appointment to the Board of Directors is a commitment to take part in the life of the school and in the development of its courses and career paths. I try to bring the vision of Dassault Aviation, a major player in the aerospace and defence industry, and my own vision, which comes from a technical and human resources background. By definition, a school is always evolving, it has to adapt to the expectations and needs of both students and companies.

Dassault Aviation’s support for ISAE-SUPAERO also takes other forms: our alumni engineers teach a number of courses in the engineering curriculum; we sponsor student associations; and we provide sponsorship for the school’s cutting-edge research into cognitive air systems(CASAC chair). So we have very strong links with ISAE-SUPAERO. It’s not a new relationship, since Marcel Dassault graduated from the school in 1913!

You are the guest of honour of this year's graduating class. What messages would you like to pass on to our students and alumni?

We live in a rapidly changing world and we have some fundamental challenges ahead of us. They relate to defence, national sovereignty and the environmental transition. In all three of these areas, the aerospace industry offers solutions. I would therefore like to say to students and future engineers or managers that they have a unique opportunity to play a decisive role in the world of today and tomorrow. Their talents, knowledge and intelligence are their responsibility to contribute to the common good. I believe that technology and science are part of the answer, and we need our engineers more than ever.

I would also like to tell them how important it is to be curious, pragmatic and positive in professional life. The challenge is great, the roadmap is demanding, but with passion anything is possible. Above all, let them enjoy what they do!

Our alumni have their say: Meet Nathanaël Lecompte (S2021)

Nathanaël is a young graduate of ISAE-SUPAERO, an engineer, who, of all the opportunities open to him, chose the renewable energy sector. Here he explains his motivations and his career path!

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I have a fairly classic academic background, scientific baccalaureate, prépa and Mines Ponts competitive exam, I joined ISAE-SUPAERO in 2017. In my second year, I spent a semester at the Politehnica University of Bucharest in Romania in order to discover Eastern Europe.

During my gap year, I did an internship in Strategy and Development at EDF, which is also where I developed my appetite for RE (Renewable Energies). On the strength of this experience, I decided to look for an end-of-studies placement in a company in the sector, so I contacted an alumni who worked in this field and he recommended ELYS. I got a lot out of the placement and decided to start my career there. The SME spirit suited me perfectly: Very agile with enough framework to progress quickly, but which also leaves a certain amount of freedom.

What are your current positions at ELYS?

Elys is a 35-strong SME specialising in project management and project assistance in the field of renewable energy. It is particularly involved in the construction of renewable energy infrastructure: wind farms, photovoltaic farms and private HV (High Voltage)/MV (Medium Voltage) transformer stations. We help our customers to design and build their projects.

I’m attached to the Paris branch, where I’m in charge of HV connections and projects. I’m in charge of designing and building private MV/LV substations to connect renewable energy parks to the RTE electricity transmission network.

How has training at ISAE-SUPAERO helped you in your career?

I think that the core curriculum at the Institute gives us a multidisciplinary perspective on a complex project. The students and alumni have a great capacity to learn quickly about subjects in which they are initially neophytes. This is a real asset that the school has been able to give me. When we leave the school, we’re not specialists in every subject, but we’ve learnt to develop our skills.

When I arrived at the Institute, I wasn’t particularly familiar with environmental issues, but I felt that these problems were very present among the students and in the training, and I’ve been able to witness this evolution throughout my career. As we are a flexible school, it adapts to societal and environmental issues. This is one of our strengths today. This is illustrated in particular by the creation of the ETE (ENERGY, TRANSPORT AND ENVIRONMENT) course in 2015 and the growing number of students who enrol each year.

Do you have any advice for our students?

In my opinion, another of ISAE-SUPAERO’s strengths is that the Institute remains a school with a human dimension and a caring working environment. As a result, I believe that students can realise their dreams by relying on the Department of Studies, the School as a whole and the alumni network. No two students have the same career path, and the School has always succeeded in adapting to each student’s plans and helping them to achieve their goals. So don’t hesitate to ask!

Renewable energy is a market with huge needs; there are plans for several decades, with very significant employment prospects. If any ISAE-SUPAERO students are interested in renewable energies for an internship or a job, please don’t hesitate to contact me on Linkedin or by email.

Finally, I would advise them to work in a field that is in line with their values, it’s important for me to believe in what I do. When you start working at the age of 23, if you don’t believe in what you’re doing, the time may seem long!

Meeting with our alumni Giuseppe Cataldo (S2010 ), NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

Giuseppe Cataldo, who graduated from the engineering programme in 2010, is Head of Back Planetary Protection for the ERO-CCRS mission in the Mars Sample Return programme, and Chief Engineer for NASA’s EXCLAIM mission.
He talks to us about his academic and professional career.

You have a very cosmopolitan background. Could you tell us what motivated your choices?

I was born and raised in southern Italy, in a small town by the sea. I started my studies in aerospace engineering at the Politecnico di Milano before applying for a double-diploma programme in Europe. Although there were several options in terms of destination, I chose France and ISAE-SUPAERO because I had never lived abroad and I wanted to experience a new culture and learn a new language.
Therefore, studying at an English-speaking university was not my first choice, and ISAE-SUPAERO offered all courses in French. In addition, the school was already the best in France and one of the best in Europe for aerospace engineering. It also offered a lot of connections with companies, which was bound to make it easier to enter the world of work. Finally, everything was confirmed when I arrived and stayed there, and I couldn’t have been happier!
The United States, however, was not in my initial plans. I simply seized an opportunity that led me to move to the other side of the Atlantic to fulfil one of my dreams, and I owe this to ISAE-SUPAERO.

You've been working at NASA for 12 years, how did you get this job?

It all started at ISAE-SUPAERO in 2008. I was in my second year when I received an email from the Career Center inviting all European students to apply for the NASA Academy, NASA’s student excellence programme. ESA was offering two positions and CNES one. I had always dreamed of working in space, and in particular for agencies like NASA and ESA. This application was a unique opportunity to at least take the first step towards that goal. I knew the competition was tough, but I had to give it a go. So I sent my application to the ESA, but I didn’t expect that a few weeks later I would be selected for interviews and then definitively as one of the two Europeans who would be leaving for Washington in the summer of 2009. It was a dream come true!
The NASA Academy transformed me.
I did research in the field of infrared astrophysics and thanks to this experience I returned to NASA the following year for my final year project, after which I got a job there. I then went on to do a PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in collaboration with NASA, which enabled me to work on one of the most formidable projects in history, the James Webb telescope.

What are your current missions? Can you tell us about the James Webb Telescope?

I’m currently Head of Back Planetary Protection for the ERO-CCRS mission in the Mars Sample Return programme, which aims to return samples of the Martian soil and atmosphere to Earth. My job is to design and build all the mechanisms and procedures to ensure that the capsule and sample container do not break during atmospheric re-entry and landing, to prevent potentially biological particles from being dispersed and contaminating our planet.

I am also the chief engineer for the EXCLAIM mission, an infrared telescope that will be launched into the stratosphere in 2023, and for the infrared camera for the PRIME telescope, which is being built in South Africa and will be operational by the end of the year. Between 2014 and 2020 I had the honour of working on the James Webb telescope, which was finally launched in December 2021. James Webb is the largest and most powerful space telescope ever built. For this project, I developed an innovative method for validating the mathematical models used to assess the telescope’s performance during the integration and testing phase. I also contributed to the testing of the thermal system, which enabled me to work on the hardware. It was a unique experience that taught me a lot about teamwork in a large-scale project. It also allowed me to develop things for the first time or to solve problems that nobody had ever had before. It took a lot of creativity and initiative!

Traditionally, we ask our alumni if they have any advice to give our students. Do you have a message for them?

My main advice is to be curious and proactive, in other words, always exploring to find the answers to your questions. Be active in shaping your career path by looking for opportunities to grow in your academic and professional training, through internships, courses, extra-curricular activities, etc. The university years are the best time to broaden your knowledge and develop the skills that will help you in the world of work.

FRENCH SUPERCAM INSTRUMENT RECORDING THE SOUND OF INGENUITY'S 4th FLIGHT

Located 80 meters from the rover at the moment of take-off, the small helicopter rose to 5 meters above the ground before covering a distance of 133 meters before returning to land where it had taken off from. SuperCam's scientific microphone, developed by ISAE-SUPAERO, recorded the sound emitted by the rotation of the Martian drone's blades during its flight. This sound has a characteristic frequency of 84 Hz, equivalent to the low “E” of a piano or the bass voice of a human being. “This is a big surprise for the whole scientific team,” says Naomi Murdoch, a researcher at ISAE-SUPAERO who is studying the data from the microphone. "Tests carried out in a Martian atmosphere simulator to design this instrument, and our theories of sound propagation, indicated that the microphone would have great difficulty picking up the sounds of the helicopter. Indeed, Mars' thin atmosphere strongly attenuates sound transmission. We needed a bit of luck to record the helicopter from such a distance. We're very pleased to have succeeded in obtaining this recording, which is proving to be a goldmine for our understanding of the Martian atmosphere". Developed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and a consortium of CNRS laboratories and its partners, coordinated by CNES, SuperCam's microphone is derived from a consumer model adapted to withstand the Martian environment. It pursues 3 substantial scientific and technical objectives of the Mars 2020 mission: Study the sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks, to gain a better understanding of their mechanical properties. Improving our understanding of atmospheric phenomena (wind turbulence, dust eddies, wind interactions with the rover, and now with the helicopter). Understanding the sound signature of the rover's various movements (robotic arm and mast operations, driving on normal or uneven ground, pump monitoring, etc.). The microphone was first switched on a few hours after Perseverance landed. It recorded the first Martian sounds generated by turbulence in the atmosphere. It is used daily in conjunction with laser rock ablation for chemical analysis of Mars. ABOUT THE MARS 2020 MISSION: NASA is relying on Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the development of the Mars 2020 mission. SuperCam was developed jointly by LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA) and a consortium of laboratories attached to the CNRS, French universities and research establishments. Several Spanish universities, led by the University of Valladolid, are also contributing to the instrument. CNES is responsible to NASA for the French contribution to SuperCam. The instrument is operated alternately from LANL and the French Operations Center for Science and Exploration (FOCSE) at CNES in Toulouse.

The sound of a Martian dust devil captured by the SuperCam microphone on Perseverance

This video and audio show the results obtained by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover and its SuperCam microphone when recording the sounds of a Martian dust devil passing overhead on 27 September 2021, the 215th Martian day or sol of the mission. The dust devil was 25 metres wide and at least 118 metres high, moving at a speed of approximately 19 km/h. This is the first time such a recording has been made, as capturing a dust devil requires a bit of luck. Indeed, it flew over the rover at a time when all of Perseverance's sensors measuring wind, pressure, temperature and dust, plus the NavigationXXX (Navcam) camera, were running. This allowed scientists to combine sounds, images and atmospheric data. The unique combination of this data, along with atmospheric modelling, enabled researchers to estimate the dimensions of the dust devil. Scientists cannot accurately predict when these vortices will occur. Rovers such as Perseverance and Curiosity monitor them regularly. ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space organize an international training course on space systems

Twenty engineers from the Peruvian space agency CONIDA (Comisión Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Aeroespacial) attended a training course in Toulouse designed jointly by ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space! The aim? To develop their skills in space systems and space missions. The entire program was placed under the academic responsibility of AnnaFederica Urbano, a lecturer and researcher in space systems and launchers at ISAE-SUPAERO. The engineers took part in a preliminary satellite design project. At the end of the five-week course, they all obtained the Certificate of Advanced Studies awarded by ISAE-SUPAERO. For ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus Defence and Space, this experience opens up prospects for future collaborations in training courses of this type for international customers and industrial and institutional partners. Meteorite impact reveals new insights into Mars

ISAE-SUPAERO est un établissement d'enseignement supérieur axé sur la recherche et l'innovation, qui s'engage à concilier excellence scientifique, visibilité académique et proximité avec les objectifs industriels. Ses activités de recherche ont contribué à faire de l'école un leader international non seulement en termes de programme d'ingénierie aérospatiale, mais aussi de programmes de troisième cycle, notamment ses masters (MSc) et ses programmes de doctorat en sciences de l'ingénierie. C'est pourquoi de nombreux acteurs internationaux clés de la recherche rendent visite à leurs homologues de l'ISAE-SUPAERO. Nous avons rencontré Dan Sheeres, professeur émérite de l'université du Colorado et titulaire de la chaire A. Richard Seebass au département des sciences de l'ingénierie aérospatiale Ann et H.J. Smead de l'université du Colorado à Boulder. Les recherches de Dan Scheeres couvrent des sujets allant de l'astrodynamique et de la navigation spatiale à la science planétaire et à la mécanique céleste, et il a publié de nombreux articles dans ces domaines. L'astéroïde 8887 a été baptisé « Scheeres » en reconnaissance de ses contributions à la compréhension scientifique de l'environnement dynamique des astéroïdes. Pendant son séjour à l'ISAE-SUPAERO, le professeur Scheeres et l'équipe des systèmes spatiaux pour les applications planétaires ont collaboré à l'analyse des données DART et au développement de concepts visant à étudier la structure interne des astéroïdes lors de futures missions spatiales. De plus, Dan Scheeres et l'ISAE-SUPAERO ont publié conjointement plusieurs articles dans « Nature » sur les astéroïdes et la mission DART.

The ‘SUPERCAM - Martian Exploration’ educational kit project was initiated by five partners: ISAE-SUPAERO, the Toulouse Academy, CNRS, CNES and Cité de l'espace. Under the guidance and supervision of astrophysicist Sylvestre Maurice, first-year students at ISAE-SUPAERO developed this educational tool to raise awareness of space exploration in classrooms, from sixth form to final year. This kit is available to middle and high school teachers and can be adapted to offer educational lessons related to this theme.

Interview with Juan-Carlos DOLADO-PEREZ (M2008), Head of Space Surveillance at CNES

Can you tell us about your academic career?

I come from Alicante, a town in the south of Spain. Ever since I was a child, I’d dreamt of working in aeronautics and space, so I naturally turned to the Polytechnic University of Madrid, which at the time was the only Spanish university offering training in aeronautical engineering.

At the end of the course, I had two choices: To enter the world of work or to continue my studies. I chose to deepen my knowledge of aerospace … and enjoy my student life a little longer!

After discussions with colleagues who had done projects in Toulouse, I chose to come to France and Toulouse, the European capital of aeronautics and space. I had the opportunity to join the MAE at ISAE-SUPAERO. I spoke very little French at the time, but that didn’t stop me because the courses were taught in English.

At ISAE-SUPAERO I discovered a new way of teaching and learning these subjects.

I went from a very theoretical approach in Spain to a more practical approach in the Master’s programme, with more projects and applications.

We also benefited from courses given by professional lecturers from the aerospace industry (Airbus, Thalès, CNES, etc.), which gave us an initial insight into the expectations and realities of the world of work.

From a personal point of view, it was also a very valuable experience. The Master students come from all over the world, so you get to know many cultures and learn to adapt to multiculturalism.

I graduated top of my class, and it was a great source of pride for me to have the recognition of the teaching staff, so that I could go back to work full of motivation!

How do you build your career? What motivates you in your choices?

I started my professional life with no idea of a clear-cut career path.

When I discovered orbital mechanics during my studies, the subject fascinated me! I applied to CNES and was extremely lucky to be selected for an internship in the Orbital Manoeuvres department. CNES is an exceptional place to work in space, with fascinating subjects and surrounded by passionate people.

Following my placement, I took up an opportunity to become DATA SCIENTIST on the CoRoT mission to explore the universe and detect exoplanets. This mission opened up my horizons, as I discovered the world of scientific research, working with planetologists and astrophysicists, as well as with the operational teams, all working towards a common goal: To advance science! This reinforced my belief that ” together we are stronger “, and that has become my motto.

I was extremely lucky to work at CNES with teams that allowed me to develop my ideas, always in an extremely constructive spirit. I was able to develop operational tools for analysing the quality of scientific data that were used long after I left the job.

I then took up a new opportunity that brought me closer to my favourite field: orbital mechanics.

I joined the team working on space surveillance and space debris.
Space surveillance is one of CNES’s areas of defence activity. It involves knowing at all times what is over our heads and where these objects (debris, launcher bodies, active or inactive satellites) are going, and whether there is a risk of collision or re-entry into the atmosphere. With the ease of access to space and the proliferation of objects in orbit (new launches, explosions in orbit, anti-satellite tests, etc.), the risk of collision in orbit is only increasing.

For example, during the first decade of the 21st century, the number of satellites launched into orbit each year was around one hundred. By way of comparison, in 2021 alone, more than 1,500 satellites will have been launched into orbit!

Faced with this increase in the number of objects in orbit and the associated risk of collision, CNES monitors a fleet of around 300 satellites 24/7 to protect them from the risk of collision, for example by recommending anti-collision manoeuvres with a non-active object or coordinating space traffic whenever there is a risk of collision with another manoeuvring object.
This activity, which is part of a public service aimed at protecting European space platforms, is provided by CNES as part of the EU-SST European Space Surveillance programme.

It is important to note that CNES was one of the pioneers of space surveillance worldwide, being one of the first to suffer the consequences of space pollution. In 1996, the French military satellite Cerise was the first satellite to be lost due to impact with space debris. Today, CNES’s expertise in this field is known and recognized worldwide.

In this exciting and now indispensable field of space surveillance, I started out as a specialist, then an expert, and now I have the honour and privilege of working with an exceptional team as head of the space surveillance department at CNES.

Do you have a message for our students?

First of all, I’d like to tell them to be daring, to be curious and ambitious in what they do, and always seek to improve and add value. Be non-conformist, in the good sense of the word. Just because you’re used to doing something a certain way doesn’t mean it’s the right way to do it.

We’re stronger together! We need to stay open to new adventures and grow with others.
