The fourth edition of ICCAS (International Conference on Cognitive Aircraft Systems) was held on June 11–12, organized in partnership with the ISAE-SUPAERO Foundation and Dassault Aviation, as part of the Chair in Design and Architecture of Cognitive Aircraft Systems (CASAC).
An edition that confirms the conference’s international standing
This fourth edition brought together 169 participants representing 23 different nationalities, with a balanced split of 45 per cent from industry and 55 per cent from academia. The programme comprised 28 oral presentations, two keynote speeches by Anne-Marie Brouwer and Wendy Mackay, as well as 30 posters and 10 demonstrations. Three companies (HAT.tec, Tobii and Ephyca) also had stands to showcase their solutions.
Organised around the key themes of embedded artificial intelligence,human-system interaction, neuroergonomics and autonomous systems, the conference offers an integrated perspective combining cutting-edge academic research with concrete operational applications.
A strong focus on practical application
This edition of ICCAS stands out for its resolutely application-oriented focus: the work presented centres on proof-of-concept projects that are very close to deployment, with advanced levels of technological maturity. Researchers validate their methods using realistic scenarios (flight simulators, flight tests, collaborative platforms) before considering their integration into future operational systems.
Another new feature this year was the demonstrations session, where researchers and engineers presented their systems in action. Among the standout demonstrations were human-machine interface concepts for fighter aircraft, an estimation of mental state using cameras, a test bed for collaboration between humans and autonomous systems, modular tools for robotic planning and execution, and a gaze-aware reinforcement learning system for human-AI collaboration.
An exemplary collaboration between industry and academia
ICCAS brings together a unique international community of academic, institutional and industrial researchers focused on the design and architecture of cognitive aerial systems. Alongside Dassault Aviation, major partners such as Thales, Airbus, Cap Gemini, DGA Essais en Vol, TNO and the US Air Force Research Laboratory accounted for 40 per cent of the institutional and industrial stakeholders present, alongside researchers from ISAE-SUPAERO, research laboratories at international universities and grandes écoles.
This dynamic illustrates the model championed by Dassault Aviation and ISAE-SUPAERO within the framework of the CASAC Chair: industry articulates its needs to address operational challenges, academic research proposes innovative methods and tools, and the Chair ensures cross-fertilisation between these two worlds: a collaborative effort underpinned by a shared commitment to accelerating the emergence of smart aviation in the interests of safety.
The main theme of this year’s event: AI for operational decision-making
The 2026 edition placed the issue of autonomy in the service of humanity at the heart of its discussions: how can AI tools help a military pilot or a drone operator to make the right decision at the right time, in a constrained environment, without replacing their judgement? This question, which brings together ethics, systems engineering, cognitive psychology and operational performance, lies at the heart of the challenges facing French and European technological sovereignty in the defence sector.
Among the topics discussed were behavioural and neurophysiological monitoring of operators, eco-friendly and augmented human-machine interfaces, cooperative algorithms with mixed initiative, the certification of embedded AI, and single-pilot or extended-crew operations.
As Caroline Chanel, a professor at ISAE-SUPAERO, points out: “AI is already being used in simulators and will soon be on actual aircraft; today we must ensure that this AI is understandable, reliable, certified and accepted by crews – essential conditions for its operational deployment. ICCAS is precisely the place where this convergence takes place.”
This event is co-organised by ISAE-SUPAERO, Dassault Aviation and the ISAE-SUPAERO Foundation, and is supported by the CASAC Chair, ANITI and AFIA. The 2026 conference was chaired by Caroline Chanel, Frédéric Dehais and Patrick Fabiani, general chairs of ICCAS.

AeroMAPS: an ISAE-SUPAERO reference tool for exploring the possible futures of aviationThe AeroMAPS tool, developed by two ISAE-SUPAERO researchers, Scott Delbecq and Thomas Planès, can be used to assess the environmental impacts of air transport and the effectiveness or limitations of levers to decarbonize the sector! Initially designed for research and training purposes, the tool is now a multidisciplinary, open-source platform, accessible to experts as well as institutional, industrial and associative decision-makers. Its development has been integrated into the work of the Institute for Sustainable Aviation (ISA), an interdisciplinary research institute headed by Laurent Joly, whose aim is to address the issue of #aviation's ecological transition in all its complexity. By playing on the sector's transition levers, AeroMAPS users can define the scenarios whose impacts they wish to analyze. For example, the introduction of new aircraft types, the use of new fuels or the rate of growth in air traffic. AeroMAPS is the first air transport scenario exploration platform built on an open-source scientific methodology. It was initially designed and developed to enable researchers to explore air transport transition scenarios in detail. It was then rapidly integrated into training programs: first in the ISAE-SUPAERO engineering curriculum, then in continuing education programs. To facilitate use of the tool, a partnership was formed with Sopra Steria. This major tech player built the platform's new web interface to enhance the user experience and make it accessible to decision-makers. Research work recently took on a socio-economic dimension with a PhD prepared by Antoine Salgas, in partnership with TBS Education. Antoine Salgas has also created a traffic and emissions inventory in collaboration with the Dutch Delft University of Technology. These two aspects of his thesis gave rise to an AeroMAPS “satellite” tool, called AeroSCOPE, which enables analyses to be partitioned and regionalized. Today, the comprehensive, multi-disciplinary aspect of AeroMAPS is a decision-making aid for the entire #aeronautics ecosystem. Through its scientific expertise, ISAE-SUPAERO contributes to the debate and to the future of aviation.

Discover... ISAE-SUPAERO's P68ISAE-SUPAERO - as a center for training through #research, research training and innovation - has a wealth of research equipment used within its 6 research departments. Today, we present the #P68! Since 2018, ISAE-SUPAERO's flight operations center has been equipped with a twin-engine Vulcanair P68 Observer 2 to teach ISAE-SUPAERO students flight mechanics, flight test techniques and how to carry out research projects. The aircraft is equipped with a telemetry system, enabling flight parameters to be monitored in real time from the campus classrooms. A versatile aircraft with a large payload, it can carry a variety of sensors via a hatch under the fuselage. It also features unique instrumentation for research activities and sensors for pilot monitoring (remote eye trackers, scene cameras, etc.) synchronized with flight parameters. It enables us to estimate pilots' attentional and cognitive states (fatigue, distraction, inattention, engagement, etc.) in real time during flight.

From classroom to cockpit: flying activities at ISAE-SUPAEROTake a video tour of the school's Lasbordes Air Operations Center (COAL). With a fleet of 9 light aircraft, the COAL offers 3 types of activities: - Pilot training to obtain the Private Pilot's License (PPL), which enables students to fly single-engine aircraft. - Practical work directly linked to the school's teaching programs, from flight mechanics to an introduction to flight test techniques for continuing education. - Research into human factors and pilot cognitive mechanisms in real time during flight. At ISAE-SUPAERO, engineering and Master's students are lucky enough to be able to take their pilot's license just a few kilometers from the campus. Several instructors accompany them and train them to fly. All are members of the Aerospace Vehicle Design and Operation Research Department, headed by Valérie Budinger.

Feedback: a Latecoere engineer in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratoriesTo strengthen the links between industry and research, more than 10 industrial R&D engineers have been made available to ISAE-SUPAERO as part of the France Relance plan! Cyril Geneste, research engineer at Latecoere, is one of them. Together with Miguel Charlotte, Associate Professor at the Institute, he looks back on this fruitful two-year collaboration. Their work, carried out in the ISAE-SUPAERO laboratories, focused on the behavior of aircraft door seals, which ensure cabin airtightness. Thanks to the Institute's cutting-edge equipment and academic expertise, Cyril Geneste was able in particular to carry out numerical modeling of seals in order to test their behavior. Students in their 3rdᵉ year of engineering studies were also involved in this work.

Discover... the ISAE-SUPAERO radio anechoic chamberISAE-SUPAERO – as a centre for training through research, research training and innovation – has a wide range of research equipment used within its six research departments. Today, we present the radio anechoic chamber! Drones and nanosatellites have many applications in the media, industry, agriculture and telecommunications sectors. These two types of platforms share the common constraint of having to carry complex systems in a small space. One of the key elements of on-board communication systems is the antenna, which must also be compact and lightweight. ISAE-SUPAERO, in collaboration with ENAC and ANYWAVES, is currently developing dielectric antennas made by 3D printing ceramics that meet the demanding criteria for integration on drones and nanosatellites. Thanks to the anechoic chamber available at ISAE-SUPAERO, researchers involved in the development of these original antennas can accurately characterise their radiation properties and thus validate the new technological solutions proposed.
